- [00:00:05.970]So welcome to another episode of
- [00:00:07.512]Stretching Your Strengths in CEHS.
- [00:00:09.298]I'm Dr. Paul Springer,
- [00:00:10.322]the Associate Dean
- [00:00:11.540]for Student Success.
- [00:00:12.630]And today we're going to be
- [00:00:13.729]meeting with Melissa Wilkerson,
- [00:00:15.729]one of the CARE advocates
- [00:00:17.135]for the Center for Advocacy,
- [00:00:18.706]Response, and Education.
- [00:00:20.490]Thanks for joining us today, Melissa.
- [00:00:22.651]Thank you so much for this opportunity.
- [00:00:23.935]We're excited,
- [00:00:24.568]I'm excited to be here.
- [00:00:25.830]Well, we're really excited
- [00:00:26.967]to have you here.
- [00:00:27.825]You know, helping
- [00:00:28.571]our students and faculty
- [00:00:29.714]understand the resources
- [00:00:31.059]that exist on campus,
- [00:00:32.700]I think is one
- [00:00:33.377]of the biggest challenges,
- [00:00:35.127]I face in my role.
- [00:00:37.500]And especially for people
- [00:00:39.239]who've experienced any form
- [00:00:40.763]of interpersonal violence
- [00:00:42.240]or sexual assault.
- [00:00:43.890]So can you tell us
- [00:00:44.830]a little bit more about what
- [00:00:46.473]the Center for Advocacy,
- [00:00:47.831]Response and Education is?
- [00:00:49.830]Absolutely. We are a
- [00:00:51.178]free confidential resource
- [00:00:52.750]located right here on campus.
- [00:00:54.854]And we provide again that
- [00:00:56.782]free confidential resource for
- [00:00:58.079]students, faculty, and staff.
- [00:00:59.460]So anyone in the UNL community
- [00:01:01.231]who may have experienced
- [00:01:02.719]sexual violence,
- [00:01:03.960]dating/domestic violence,
- [00:01:05.598]stalking or sexual harassment,
- [00:01:07.320]or
- [00:01:08.000]maybe someone who is supporting
- [00:01:10.028]someone who has experienced that.
- [00:01:11.550]So both
- [00:01:12.147]the primary as well as
- [00:01:13.314]the secondary
- [00:01:14.302]victims, if you will,
- [00:01:15.630]we support
- [00:01:16.546]all people who support people
- [00:01:18.213]who have experienced these things.
- [00:01:19.620]Oh, that's awesome.
- [00:01:20.460]So what kind of resources in
- [00:01:22.240]particular do you provide to
- [00:01:24.000]students, staff or faculty who are
- [00:01:25.657]supporting or experienced it?
- [00:01:27.902]What we provide is
- [00:01:28.905]a safe place
- [00:01:30.658]to process what's happened.
- [00:01:32.686]While we're not counselors,
- [00:01:34.000]we give out a ton of
- [00:01:35.111]referrals to counselors,
- [00:01:36.113]both on campus,
- [00:01:37.363]as well as in our community.
- [00:01:39.418]But what we really do is help
- [00:01:40.300]people understand their options,
- [00:01:42.072]everything, there's no checklist,
- [00:01:43.549]there's no one size fits all
- [00:01:44.839]approach at all.
- [00:01:45.890]We really are here first and foremost
- [00:01:47.550]to listen and to believe and to support.
- [00:01:50.370]So we take a listen
- [00:01:51.228]to what's happened,
- [00:01:51.794]what someone's willing
- [00:01:52.563]to share with us.
- [00:01:53.650]And then we talk with them
- [00:01:55.178]about what their options are,
- [00:01:56.471]would they like to report,
- [00:01:58.055]explain to them what that is.
- [00:01:59.655]Maybe they need to
- [00:02:00.233]seek medical attention.
- [00:02:01.464]We can certainly explain to them
- [00:02:02.711]what their options are with that,
- [00:02:04.000]but we can also support people
- [00:02:05.480]through those processes.
- [00:02:06.580]If they'd like us to go with
- [00:02:07.722]them to appointments,
- [00:02:08.660]we are happy to do that.
- [00:02:10.113]We also have a great relationship
- [00:02:11.328]with our housing and dining.
- [00:02:12.922]We're able to very quickly
- [00:02:14.477]put people in emergency housing
- [00:02:15.911]located right here on campus.
- [00:02:17.955]So that's something that
- [00:02:18.676]we're really proud of.
- [00:02:19.657]We worked hard with them.
- [00:02:20.537]We've got an amazing
- [00:02:21.345]partnership.
- [00:02:22.333]Oh, that's awesome.
- [00:02:23.304]So,
- [00:02:24.000]what advice would you
- [00:02:25.337]give someone who has
- [00:02:26.910]experienced sexual assault
- [00:02:28.625]or violence or someone who
- [00:02:30.220]knows of someone
- [00:02:31.388]who's experienced sexual
- [00:02:32.764]assault or interpersonal violence?
- [00:02:35.072]You know, first of all,
- [00:02:35.822]what we would want anyone to
- [00:02:36.885]know who's experienced
- [00:02:38.276]any of these things is that
- [00:02:39.913]we believe them,
- [00:02:40.696]and that it's not their fault,
- [00:02:42.206]and that we're here to support them.
- [00:02:43.830]And honestly,
- [00:02:44.337]we would want anyone
- [00:02:45.590]who is supporting someone
- [00:02:47.142]to feel that same way
- [00:02:48.229]and to let
- [00:02:49.221]their friend or colleague know,
- [00:02:50.955]listen, I believe you,
- [00:02:52.351]this is not your fault
- [00:02:53.664]And I'm here to support you.
- [00:02:55.757]Starting with a confidential resource,
- [00:02:57.470]like CARE is a great place to get started
- [00:02:59.514]because talking with us being that
- [00:03:01.514]confidential piece
- [00:03:02.414]does not start a report to
- [00:03:04.270]law enforcement
- [00:03:05.193]or to IAC,
- [00:03:06.538]Institutional, Equity, and Compliance
- [00:03:08.109]also often referred to as Title Nine.
- [00:03:10.677]So it's a great place for us to
- [00:03:12.049]start right here in our office.
- [00:03:14.000]Oh, that's fantastic.
- [00:03:15.067]So how can people reach
- [00:03:16.276]out if they need help?
- [00:03:17.321]How can they get ahold of you?
- [00:03:18.865]You know, the best thing for anyone
- [00:03:20.530]to do is to always call first.
- [00:03:22.471]Our phone number is (402) 472-3553.
- [00:03:26.641]That's our on-call number.
- [00:03:28.196]It's the best way,
- [00:03:29.120]I would hate for someone to get
- [00:03:30.275]here to our office and find
- [00:03:31.751]my door shut,
- [00:03:33.025]because I'm inside
- [00:03:33.890]with somebody else.
- [00:03:35.235]So it's always best to call first,
- [00:03:36.765]make an appointment
- [00:03:37.677]or even email
- [00:03:38.764]victimadvocate@unl.edu.
- [00:03:41.223]Well, thank you.
- [00:03:41.782]I really appreciate
- [00:03:42.798]your time, Melissa.
- [00:03:43.574]This is such helpful information.
- [00:03:45.693]So thank you.
- [00:03:46.504]Thank you so much for the opportunity.
- [00:03:47.944]We are definitely here for
- [00:03:49.111]anyone who needs us.
- [00:03:50.545]Thank you.
