- [00:00:00.240]We're back here on countdown to kickoff Huskers,
- [00:00:01.960]headed to a 2-35 kick today against the Purdue boilermakers.
- [00:00:05.500]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:06.910]chance to catch up with the chancellor
- [00:00:08.370]from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.490]It's always good to be back,
- [00:00:12.530]it was nice having a bi-week too chancellor,
- [00:00:14.430]to kind of get everybody a little wet.
- [00:00:16.150]I saw a lot of wedding pictures being taken on campus
- [00:00:19.060]last Saturday down here,
- [00:00:20.180]but it was nice to have it a bi-week,
- [00:00:21.530]but good to be back home.
- [00:00:23.940]It, it is, you know, a little bit of a breather
- [00:00:26.645]this.. this past couple of weeks,
- [00:00:28.990]and we've got another one coming up here in November as well
- [00:00:31.850]to kind of get some breath under our feet so to speak.
- [00:00:36.390]It's been a long stretch of games going back
- [00:00:38.440]to the very beginning of the season.
- [00:00:39.890]Of course, we started in week zero ahead of most of the,
- [00:00:43.450]the teams in the country with our game against Illinois.
- [00:00:46.197]And, and we got, you know,
- [00:00:48.539]the one coming up between Wisconsin and Iowa as well.
- [00:00:52.030]So we're, we're looking for a strong finish to the season.
- [00:00:54.930]We have a resilient team
- [00:00:56.420]and excited to see them competing again today.
- [00:00:58.910]Well, let's turn our attention to some academics.
- [00:01:01.450]The Nebraska engineering is certainly growing
- [00:01:03.960]with major renovations and a building project.
- [00:01:06.860]As part of that, you recently announced the first class
- [00:01:10.470]in a new scholars program.
- [00:01:12.340]What can you tell our audience
- [00:01:13.500]about the new class of scholars?
- [00:01:16.720]Well, in Nebraska engineering, Greg,
- [00:01:19.040]of course we do have tremendous building going on currently.
- [00:01:22.380]And we talked some previously
- [00:01:24.640]about the two big major building projects,
- [00:01:26.810]one that's in the latter half of it being finished
- [00:01:29.560]with the Scott engineering center rebuild
- [00:01:31.440]and addition that'll open next year.
- [00:01:34.010]And then the Keywood hall, the new instructional facility,
- [00:01:38.130]that's now underway and construction to be finished in 2023
- [00:01:41.930]for Nebraska engineering and right alongside that,
- [00:01:45.810]we're very, very pleased that we just launched
- [00:01:48.590]our first class of key,
- [00:01:50.270]with scholars, student recipients.
- [00:01:53.380]This is a really... view.. uh...
- [00:01:57.190]very impactful.
- [00:01:58.330]We think for long time to come program that was started
- [00:02:01.809]by the Keywood corporations executive team.
- [00:02:05.239]Not only is Keywood been the lead gift,
- [00:02:08.780]for naming the new building that we have under construction,
- [00:02:11.940]but their executive team has pledged a commitment
- [00:02:15.540]to this new Keywood scholars program.
- [00:02:17.660]It's part of developing or complete engineers program,
- [00:02:21.420]in engineering to have graduates that are ready
- [00:02:24.260]and eager to solve problems of global significance.
- [00:02:27.200]And this first cohort and our freshman class this year,
- [00:02:30.670]the inaugural inaugural cohort of the keyword scholars
- [00:02:34.310]was announced last week.
- [00:02:36.000]We had more than 325 applications for this new program
- [00:02:41.390]and we'll select 10 new students each, each a year.
- [00:02:46.820]The program is funded, as I mentioned earlier,
- [00:02:49.320]about P where Keywood and sons executive leadership team
- [00:02:52.520]headquartered in Omaha, of course,
- [00:02:54.520]one of them north America's largest and most respected
- [00:02:57.040]construction and engineering organizations
- [00:02:59.670]in this inaugural cohort of 10 students,
- [00:03:02.220]six of them are from Nebraska,
- [00:03:03.910]four from outside the state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:06.790]And this program of what it will support for them,
- [00:03:10.660]is a full four year tuition,
- [00:03:13.470]full scholarship for tuition with these students.
- [00:03:17.060]It's supporting a book stipend of up to $750 per semester
- [00:03:21.410]for the students as well,
- [00:03:23.380]initial year of room and board in fall,
- [00:03:26.870]and a study abroad stipend of up to $2,500
- [00:03:30.550]during the course of their education.
- [00:03:32.760]And, and they included importantly,
- [00:03:35.750]in this Keywood scholars program are,
- [00:03:39.090]two fully paid immersive learning trips
- [00:03:42.140]for the students during their time as engineering students,
- [00:03:46.900]and then especially crafted an internship program
- [00:03:49.850]directly at Kiewit that they'll experience as well.
- [00:03:53.570]So very, very excited about this new program,
- [00:03:56.940]alongside of that is the addition of an,
- [00:04:00.280]an additional 40 students that will become Keywood scholars,
- [00:04:05.270]as part of a partnership with the Peter Cope
- [00:04:07.740]with Peter Kiewit foundation.
- [00:04:10.110]That we'll be announcing the first class of a year from now
- [00:04:14.300]to, to add to this program.
- [00:04:15.940]So a very exciting program for Nebraska engineering.
- [00:04:18.240]Yeah. No doubt. Again, this is Ronnie Green,
- [00:04:20.020]chancellor for the University of Nebraska, Lincoln
- [00:04:22.240]here on countdown to kickoff.
- [00:04:23.600]Speaking of scholarships, chancellor,
- [00:04:25.540]the university made news recently
- [00:04:27.010]with expanded scholarship opportunities
- [00:04:29.060]for students in the arts.
- [00:04:31.220]A lot of seniors out there,
- [00:04:32.610]a lot of parents of those seniors out there listening
- [00:04:35.260]to thinking about applying to colleges right now,
- [00:04:37.240]what can you tell them
- [00:04:38.100]about these expanded scholarship opportunities?
- [00:04:41.830]Well, you know, Greg,
- [00:04:43.380]one of our most famous all time alumni
- [00:04:46.060]of the University of Nebraska
- [00:04:47.820]was none other than Johnny Carson.
- [00:04:50.220]We remember so well from his,
- [00:04:52.760]his prominence in the entertainment industry,
- [00:04:55.290]a native of Norfolk, Nebraska,
- [00:04:57.440]graduate of the University of Nebraska
- [00:05:00.330]in his own educational experience.
- [00:05:03.260]And, the Johnny Carson foundation
- [00:05:05.820]has been a strong supporter
- [00:05:07.410]of our programs and the Hickson Lee college
- [00:05:09.570]of fine and performing arts for some time, both,
- [00:05:13.380]in terms of supporting the Johnny Carson school
- [00:05:15.890]of theater and film in the college,
- [00:05:19.100]as well as the new newer Johnny Carson center
- [00:05:21.860]for emerging media arts through major gifts.
- [00:05:25.360]And they just recently announced an additional gift program
- [00:05:29.830]from the Johnny Carson foundation,
- [00:05:31.870]enabling a $5 million gift to provide tuition assistance
- [00:05:37.020]to even more of our students across these two schools
- [00:05:41.520]in the, in the Hickson Lee college
- [00:05:44.120]of fine and performing arts.
- [00:05:46.540]So we are excited about that with the increased funding,
- [00:05:50.560]the scholarship funding is expected to provide
- [00:05:53.480]an additional 50 to 60 students scholarships annually
- [00:05:57.840]totaling about $300,000 a year,
- [00:06:01.780]from the current number
- [00:06:03.080]of 15 to 25 students that are already or supported
- [00:06:07.100]from scholarships support from the Carson foundation.
- [00:06:09.630]So Johnny Carson's legacy continuing to inspire the next
- [00:06:13.620]generation of artists and emerging media artists
- [00:06:17.820]and film and theater students in the Hickson Lee college
- [00:06:21.590]of fine and performing arts.
- [00:06:23.170]Wonderful. Well, good news for everybody out there,
- [00:06:25.650]listening and hope that they take advantage of that.
- [00:06:28.030]Chancellor, always good to catch up with you.
- [00:06:29.530]Enjoy the game today and we'll chat next week,
- [00:06:31.470]before the Buckeyes, enter the field here in Lincoln.
- [00:06:35.330]We're looking forward to a great game today
- [00:06:37.380]against the boilermakers.
- [00:06:38.510]Great to have them in town and go big red.
- [00:06:41.810]Here he is. Ronnie Green,
- [00:06:42.660]chancellor for the University of Nebraska ,Lincoln
- [00:06:44.320]with us here on countdown to kickoff.
- [00:06:46.050]Matt Coney is up next with our big 10 blitz. Stick around
