[00:00:08.340]Boy, you can call them the "Husker Heartbreakers",
[00:00:10.680]cause that's what has been
[00:00:12.010]president over the last month at all these close games.
[00:00:15.670]Your thoughts about the way this season has gone through

[00:01:22.880]Amy Williams, is a radio start off in exciting season.
[00:01:26.600]Coach Fred Hoiberg,
[00:01:27.760]has a top 20 recruiting class coming in.

[00:01:48.750]So there's an awful lot to be excited about.

[00:01:51.800]Well, and here at UNL,
[00:01:53.710]the athletic department has been making some special things
[00:01:55.960]happen off the field,
[00:01:57.170]as well as some of the things that you just outlined there,
[00:01:59.620]especially for Husker fans.
[00:02:01.410]Can you talk about the red carpet experience,
[00:02:03.772]you helped create this year,
[00:02:05.550]and the expansion that was just announced
[00:02:07.280]this week?
[00:02:08.250]Well, everybody knows Nebraska fans
[00:02:10.760]are the best in the country,
[00:02:12.330]best in the world, actually.
[00:02:14.010]And what a chance for us to give back a small piece of what
[00:02:16.903]they have all given to us as a university.
[00:02:19.782]So between our athletic director, Trev Alberts,
[00:02:23.230]and some others,
[00:02:24.300]we've created this red carpet experience,
[00:02:26.470]this year, to allow underserved youth in Nebraska,
[00:02:29.360]a chance to witness a Husker football games.
[00:02:32.331]And I just can't say how special this is for the young
[00:02:35.110]people in our state.
[00:02:35.943]Who might not ever get to see a game.
[00:02:38.570]And it's really special to see those faces light up when
[00:02:41.040]they get to be in Memorial stadium.
[00:02:43.140]But we're also having a chance to expand this now to some
[00:02:46.400]other sports.
[00:02:47.233]So we're going to bring the red carpet experience to
[00:02:50.101]volleyball and both men's and women's basketball.
[00:02:52.450]So I ask our Husker fans,

[00:03:10.354]I think it's one of the great new traditions that has just
[00:03:11.550]been dawned here this year at the university.
[00:03:14.750]Well, tell us about some of the things
[00:03:16.280]that are happening in your world of the university.
[00:03:18.860]Well, I love being able to let people
[00:03:21.130]know about some of the amazing research capabilities
[00:03:23.910]that we have at our university system.
[00:03:26.251]We just recently got a $25 million contract from the
[00:03:29.370]National Nuclear Security Administration to support nuclear
[00:03:33.480]threat reduction efforts.
[00:03:34.640]Now, this is big news for our
[00:03:35.870]National Strategic Research Institute,
[00:03:38.220]and really the entire university system.
[00:03:40.673]NSRI,
[00:03:41.840]as I remind people all the time,
[00:03:43.170]it's only 1 of 14 university affiliated research centers,
[00:03:47.070]and the only one in the nation that directly supports a U.S.
[00:03:50.390]combatant command, our U.S. strategic command.
[00:03:52.890]So we're excited about the work that they're doing
[00:03:55.130]and continue to do.
[00:03:57.100]Well,

[00:04:04.550]we just had the fall break a week or so ago.

[00:04:15.100]even though we're still in the midst of this pandemic.
[00:04:17.550]I'd say we just need to keep our eye on the ball.
[00:04:20.230]We've done very well with COVID-19 on campus.
[00:04:23.180]We've kept the infection rate down lower than any other
[00:04:25.590]place in the state.

[00:04:28.893]as we came back from fall break,
[00:04:29.750]we did have a couple of outbreaks there,
[00:04:31.920]but relatively small.
[00:04:33.580]Obviously we're able to keep all in person education and
[00:04:36.800]we're continuing to do that.
[00:04:38.240]So we just want to make sure that we get through the rest of
[00:04:40.410]the semester.
[00:04:41.243]We've kept our students,
[00:04:42.520]our faculty and staff safe,
[00:04:44.404]and we'll continue to do so.
