- [00:00:00.480]UNL's College of Architecture is working to revitalize rural
- [00:00:04.470]areas.
- [00:00:05.520]Kimball County has lost more than half of its population
- [00:00:08.893]since its heyday, and students are now envisioning ways to
- [00:00:12.384]improve the community's health and hopefully give tourism a boost.
- [00:00:16.290]Professor of architecture Lloyd Shenefelt joins us now at
- [00:00:19.817]the very latest. So good to have you with us, Lloyd.
- [00:00:22.980]So what are your students hoping to accomplish this year?
- [00:00:27.420]Yes, so thank you for having me here this morning.
- [00:00:29.940]So Kimball County is struggling with tourism and growth.
- [00:00:34.260]With many main street downtown storefronts vacant and in
- [00:00:38.214]need of renovation and community is struggling to revitalize
- [00:00:42.445]itself as part of their coursework in the in the healthcare
- [00:00:46.607]seminar class that I'm teaching, they will be looking at
- [00:00:50.562]things such as geography, geology, demographics, history,
- [00:00:54.585]farming, and how some of the some of the those issues play
- [00:00:58.678]into the health of that particular community.
- [00:01:01.800]Students will also be meeting with and interviewing various
- [00:01:05.617]Kimball, community stakeholders in that process as well.
- [00:01:10.200]Sounds like it's gonna be a very positive project.
- [00:01:13.512]Talk a little more specifically about how this will benefit
- [00:01:16.323]the community.
- [00:01:18.450]Yes, so the community is on the cusp of a really kind of
- [00:01:21.810]economic growth, which means that they really need to bring
- [00:01:24.750]in a new young, vibrant workforce, which is not unique just
- [00:01:29.880]to Kimball County, it's actually pretty typical of a lot of
- [00:01:32.940]rural communities.
- [00:01:34.110]And so the way to do that is to have amenities that will
- [00:01:37.683]attract that young workforce to that place.
- [00:01:40.380]So that includes things like, like community gardens, bike
- [00:01:45.058]paths, places for kids to play, parks, things like that,
- [00:01:49.579]that will bring in, bring in that kind of young population,
- [00:01:54.337]workforce, and as well as keep them in that community.
- [00:01:58.620]That's really the goal of getting them out there. And then
- [00:02:02.132]the community is also looking at relocating their existing hospital.
- [00:02:06.180]So I have my seminar classes looking into working with them
- [00:02:10.564]for new solutions on where that may occur, and how that
- [00:02:14.657]might come about.
- [00:02:16.710]This seems like a great partnership with rural Nebraskans,
- [00:02:20.340]and being able to improve that community and both sides get
- [00:02:24.120]something out of the project.
- [00:02:25.200]And as you mentioned, getting young people to stay in a
- [00:02:28.153]small rural communities. That's very important, isn't it?
- [00:02:32.350]It is absolutely and I think that the kind of really impact
- [00:02:37.030]for the students is that they get this partnership and an
- [00:02:41.110]understanding of kind of real world experiences getting them
- [00:02:44.080]out of the classroom, which I think is hugely advantageous
- [00:02:47.560]for students in academia and those kind of real life
- [00:02:51.550]experiences and to make a difference.
- [00:02:54.100]And it is gonna definitely make a difference in their lives
- [00:02:56.560]and in that community, the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:02:59.920]Assistant Professor of Architecture Lloyd Shenefelt,
- [00:03:02.770]appreciate you joining us today and keep us updated on that
- [00:03:05.530]project.
