- [00:00:00.250]Welcome back, one and all.
- [00:00:01.160]Bob Devaney Sports Center,
- [00:00:02.500]beautiful Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:00:05.160]Huskers hosting the Purdue Boilermakers.
- [00:00:07.630]Let's talk to a huge Husker fan,
- [00:00:08.870]also happens to be on the side, the Chancellor
- [00:00:10.760]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:13.558]Huskers, midway through the journey,
- [00:00:15.990]at least in the Big 10 season,
- [00:00:17.750]and here we have Purdue for another big match.
- [00:00:20.130]Yeah JB.
- [00:00:20.963]You know, there's a lot of great volleyball being played
- [00:00:22.694]all over the country this year
- [00:00:24.150]and of course we're right in the middle of that,
- [00:00:25.598]as you know, and Big 10, as always, so strong.
- [00:00:28.930]It's the Premier Conference in women's volleyball,
- [00:00:31.710]as we know.
- [00:00:32.543]Purdue's been really strong this season.
- [00:00:35.399]We have Wisconsin coming up next,
- [00:00:37.411]and then we'll be returning back
- [00:00:39.603]to meet up with Wisconsin and Purdue,
- [00:00:41.830]both later in the season, as well.
- [00:00:44.730]We always like our chances here at Devaney,
- [00:00:47.006]so we were in front of the best fans in college volleyball.
- [00:00:50.394]So, tonight's match should be a great one.
- [00:00:53.426]Something else that could be great for Nebraska's children
- [00:00:56.916]is an improvement of the food they get to eat
- [00:01:00.062]while at school.
- [00:01:01.480]How can the University of Nebraska help?
- [00:01:03.344]Well, you know, JB,
- [00:01:04.442]the University as a Land-grant university
- [00:01:08.240]has a tripartite mission.
- [00:01:09.553]So we educate and certainly as our primary mission,
- [00:01:13.423]education of our students and creation of knowledge
- [00:01:17.860]in the societal base, we do important research
- [00:01:22.127]and discovery and then we extend our outreach in the state
- [00:01:26.610]as well through statewide Nebraska extension.
- [00:01:29.984]And there's a great alignment there,
- [00:01:32.394]between particularly our state lawmakers,
- [00:01:35.181]our Nebraska farmers, our K-12 school system.
- [00:01:40.170]And recently, we know that last year and the Legislature and
- [00:01:44.647]the Unicameral here in Nebraska Legislative Bill 396
- [00:01:48.280]was passed unanimously last Monday,
- [00:01:51.440]sponsored by Senator Tom Brandt from the Southeast Nebraska,
- [00:01:56.170]here locally, that will assist providing school children
- [00:02:00.386]with fresh non-porous processed meals and introduce them
- [00:02:03.644]to healthy eating habits and increase opportunities
- [00:02:08.237]for Nebraska farmers by linking local food
- [00:02:11.682]into K-12 school systems.
- [00:02:14.406]There's some funding that's been provided through LB396 on
- [00:02:18.165]a statewide scale to help facilitate that.
- [00:02:21.360]And that's requiring some extensive coordination across the
- [00:02:25.950]state and our Nebraska extension that I mentioned earlier,
- [00:02:30.338]Ben McShane-Jewell is an assistant extension educator with
- [00:02:34.560]rural prosperity, Nebraska, Nebraska extension.
- [00:02:36.761]And he's playing a very key and important role in this
- [00:02:39.860]linking together farmers with the K-12 system.
- [00:02:44.373]In this coming year, they're going
- [00:02:47.440]to be holding training workshops for producers
- [00:02:49.236]across the state and how to connect with schools,
- [00:02:52.231]how to plan to produce what schools need or needed.
- [00:02:56.984]Models out there set targets for 10% to 15% local being put
- [00:03:01.128]into the school system here and extension is helping
- [00:03:04.054]to coordinate that across our state.
- [00:03:06.829]One immediate step is the Mountain Plains Crunch Off.
- [00:03:10.622]That is an eight state competition.
- [00:03:13.240]It celebrates October as National Farm to School month,
- [00:03:18.160]where the encouragement is who can have
- [00:03:20.970]the most residents to crunch into a piece of fresh produce.
- [00:03:23.914]So that's kind of the little goal-setter
- [00:03:26.214]that's out there in Nebraska, actually
- [00:03:28.140]is the reigning champion in this competition two years
- [00:03:31.214]running and this month we're up at it again.
- [00:03:34.135]So hopefully we'll be the state champion again
- [00:03:39.270]in this eight-state competition.
- [00:03:40.505]So, great opportunity for Nebraska farmers,
- [00:03:43.873]for our schools and Nebraska extension to help coordinate in
- [00:03:47.865]this effort.
- [00:03:48.928]Farm to School, a collaboration where everybody wins.
- [00:03:52.050]That's the chancellor, Ronnie green.
- [00:03:53.380]Huge volleyball fans stay there,
- [00:03:54.295]we got more volleyball shortly,
- [00:03:55.784]but the head coach, John Cook, and we continue.
