- [00:00:05.580]So welcome to another episode of
- [00:00:07.123]Stretching Your Strengths in CEHS.
- [00:00:08.752]I'm Dr. Paul Springer,
- [00:00:10.346]the Associate Dean for
- [00:00:11.395]Student Success in the college.
- [00:00:13.230]And today we're going to be
- [00:00:14.120]meeting with Sandhya Karki,
- [00:00:15.420]who is an international student
- [00:00:16.872]in our college.
- [00:00:17.784]So thanks for joining us today,
- [00:00:19.140]Sandhya.
- [00:00:19.950]Hi, Dr. Paul, thank you so much for
- [00:00:21.790]having me. I'm really happy to be here.
- [00:00:23.610]Thank you.
- [00:00:24.443]Well, We are really excited
- [00:00:25.732]to have you here.
- [00:00:26.643]And one of the things that you know,
- [00:00:27.960]that we value in the college is the
- [00:00:29.771]diversity that our international students
- [00:00:32.730]bring to our CEHS community.
- [00:00:35.370]But I'm sure your transition to
- [00:00:36.921]UNL was not without its struggles.
- [00:00:38.910]So can you talk about
- [00:00:40.017]some of the challenges
- [00:00:41.525]that international student
- [00:00:42.873]may face?
- [00:00:43.599]So our,
- [00:00:44.340]our American peers
- [00:00:45.179]can understand what
- [00:00:46.518]our international students
- [00:00:48.000]go through.
- [00:00:49.015]Sure,
- [00:00:50.205]so there are like so many
- [00:00:51.106]struggles in the beginning,
- [00:00:52.350]I would say mostly in
- [00:00:53.309]the beginning that a
- [00:00:54.360]an international student might face
- [00:00:55.947]after arriving to the states,
- [00:00:57.698]you know, to their
- [00:00:58.440]particular university.
- [00:00:59.580]I think the first one would be the
- [00:01:00.840]language barriers, you know.
- [00:01:02.670]Most of the international students that
- [00:01:04.454]they come from, like particular country,
- [00:01:05.820]they don't speak English, you know,
- [00:01:07.268]it's not their native language.
- [00:01:09.120]So,
- [00:01:09.638]language barrier might be
- [00:01:11.174]the first struggle, you know,
- [00:01:12.330]that they struggle with.
- [00:01:14.180]The second would be, like, the
- [00:01:15.713]teaching culture back home,
- [00:01:17.646]the way we teach,
- [00:01:18.810]especially in my country, okay.
- [00:01:20.770]It's more like the paper-based, you know,
- [00:01:22.560]you do your assignments
- [00:01:23.413]on the notebook and then
- [00:01:25.240]you do your, you know, work
- [00:01:26.662]with like the whiteboard.
- [00:01:27.926]Here it's all technology, you know,
- [00:01:29.880]like using Canvas and stuff.
- [00:01:31.450]So,
- [00:01:31.950]that might be another one.
- [00:01:33.690]Cause like that's what I faced.
- [00:01:35.670]And then the third would be,
- [00:01:36.711]like, the culture shock as well.
- [00:01:38.160]They're like so many
- [00:01:38.876]things that you get, like,
- [00:01:40.876]you know, can I do it,
- [00:01:41.940]you know, oh my God,
- [00:01:42.694]can I kind of like, speak like that?
- [00:01:44.455]You know?
- [00:01:45.030]So then there is, like,
- [00:01:46.331]culture shock, I would say.
- [00:01:48.180]And then fourth one is,
- [00:01:49.401]like, you know, weather,
- [00:01:50.250]but it also depends on, like,
- [00:01:51.292]where you come from
- [00:01:52.045]at the same time.
- [00:01:53.422]But for me,
- [00:01:54.210]the weather of, like, Nebraska here,
- [00:01:56.711]it was, like, very, very, very harsh.
- [00:01:58.711]And I couldn't survive that.
- [00:01:59.936]So,
- [00:02:00.436]those were the struggles
- [00:02:01.032]for me, sir.
- [00:02:02.040]I think that's really
- [00:02:02.792]helpful for us to kind of
- [00:02:04.129]recognize our students come
- [00:02:05.590]from different climates as well.
- [00:02:07.680]And so what were
- [00:02:08.557]some of the resources
- [00:02:09.472]that helped you be
- [00:02:10.491]successful and
- [00:02:11.700]transition into our community?
- [00:02:13.849]There were so many, to be honest,
- [00:02:15.600]I feel like the
- [00:02:16.323]University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:17.753]provides, like, you know,
- [00:02:18.780]very support for their
- [00:02:20.364]international students, you know.
- [00:02:21.930]I think the main point of contact for
- [00:02:23.502]any international student
- [00:02:24.660]should be ISSO,
- [00:02:25.919]you know, because
- [00:02:26.571]they are the one,
- [00:02:27.499]they're like our mom and dad,
- [00:02:28.710]they help us with the
- [00:02:29.751]visa status.
- [00:02:30.783]They kind of, like,
- [00:02:31.980]plan and implement
- [00:02:32.939]programs for us.
- [00:02:34.196]So, you know,
- [00:02:34.759]when in doubt,
- [00:02:35.422]always reach out to ISSO.
- [00:02:37.069]And other resources,
- [00:02:38.340]I think that's useful
- [00:02:39.270]is, like, resource center
- [00:02:40.506]for your particular subject.
- [00:02:41.700]Like chemistry has their own,
- [00:02:43.459]math has its own, right,
- [00:02:45.210]and then Writing Center,
- [00:02:46.666]and then
- [00:02:47.166]Big Red Resilience and Wellbeing
- [00:02:48.622]to help
- [00:02:49.410]with your mental
- [00:02:50.461]health and wellbeing.
- [00:02:51.510]Our University Health Center
- [00:02:52.608]is another good resource,
- [00:02:53.879]you know, and you know,
- [00:02:54.810]it's covered, it's free,
- [00:02:55.878]you know,
- [00:02:56.684]a lot of international students,
- [00:02:57.672]you know,
- [00:02:58.172]they're like always
- [00:02:58.897]fear about, like,
- [00:03:00.000]oh my God,
- [00:03:00.765]they're going to charge me.
- [00:03:01.510]So it's free.
- [00:03:02.468]So I think those are the ones,
- [00:03:04.243]but at the same time,
- [00:03:05.200]you can always reach out
- [00:03:06.204]to, like,
- [00:03:07.251]you know, faculty.
- [00:03:08.140]I have, like, made awesome faculty that
- [00:03:10.328]has helped me with my academic side.
- [00:03:12.850]So, those people are also someone
- [00:03:16.027]that really help.
- [00:03:17.260]Those are some really great
- [00:03:18.396]resources that you gave.
- [00:03:19.510]And I hope that
- [00:03:20.222]students will go to
- [00:03:21.095]our webpage
- [00:03:22.206]under student services and they
- [00:03:23.800]can see all of the great resources
- [00:03:25.764]that CEHS and the university provides,
- [00:03:28.900]not only for our
- [00:03:29.866]international students,
- [00:03:30.792]but for all of our students.
- [00:03:32.800]So finally,
- [00:03:33.555]what words of advice
- [00:03:34.481]would you give to our
- [00:03:35.433]international students?
- [00:03:37.150]Oh yeah,
- [00:03:38.170]so I would like
- [00:03:39.563]to suggest each and every
- [00:03:40.913]international student
- [00:03:42.086]to get, like, involved,
- [00:03:43.757]you know, on campus, you are
- [00:03:44.894]here to, like, explore your wings.
- [00:03:46.660]You know, you are here
- [00:03:47.160]to like explore more
- [00:03:48.769]just then, like, rather
- [00:03:50.000]just than, like, just the
- [00:03:51.130]academic side.
- [00:03:52.237]So get involved with any clubs
- [00:03:54.000]that interest you, you know,
- [00:03:54.850]get involved in your
- [00:03:55.776]college advisory board,
- [00:03:57.610]get involved with
- [00:03:58.489]some kind of, like, lab
- [00:03:59.720]in some kind of, like, lab
- [00:04:00.951]or research or
- [00:04:02.110]also, and also,
- [00:04:03.487]reach out to, like, you know,
- [00:04:04.496]people, you know,
- [00:04:05.530]if you have any questions
- [00:04:06.751]with academic,
- [00:04:07.622]reach out to professors,
- [00:04:08.720]faculty.
- [00:04:10.229]With job opportunity,
- [00:04:11.505]reach out to the people
- [00:04:12.456]in the Career Center,
- [00:04:13.870]you know.
- [00:04:14.370]So,
- [00:04:14.934]when in doubt always ask,
- [00:04:16.214]but at the same time,
- [00:04:17.080]always make sure that
- [00:04:18.221]the opportunities.
- [00:04:19.505]You are seizing each and every
- [00:04:20.980]opportunity that is coming your way.
- [00:04:23.590]Well, thank you, Sandhya.
- [00:04:24.747]This has been really great.
- [00:04:26.140]I really appreciate
- [00:04:27.399]your insights and the
- [00:04:28.802]suggestions that you're offering
- [00:04:30.211]to our international students.
- [00:04:31.510]I hope all of you have a great semester
- [00:04:33.910]as we're halfway through already.
- [00:04:36.190]And thank you very much, Sandhya.
- [00:04:38.770]Thank you so much, Dr.,
- [00:04:40.285]Dr. Paul and I really wish that
- [00:04:42.711]every international student here
- [00:04:44.207]at Nebraska feels like home.
- [00:04:46.345]Thank you.
- [00:04:47.230]Thank you.
