- [00:00:00.210]Each and every week we have a chance to
- [00:00:01.360]sit down with a chancellor from
- [00:00:02.915]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:03.748]Ronnie Green, good to have you up in Minneapolis.
- [00:00:06.250]This is a spot that I know a lot of
- [00:00:08.430]Husker alums congregate.
- [00:00:10.310]They love coming up here and going to these games.
- [00:00:12.090]Yep
- [00:00:13.100]It's an easy trip.
- [00:00:13.933]Yeah. We've got quite a lot of fans here.
- [00:00:14.976]I see a lot of red on the streets.
- [00:00:17.050]I saw a lot of red in downtown Minneapolis last night
- [00:00:20.040]and had a good Alumni Association gathering
- [00:00:22.670]and another one here on campus today.
- [00:00:24.570]And yeah, it's a drivable game for a lot of Nebraskans.
- [00:00:27.550]A lot of Grand Islanders and people
- [00:00:29.690]from out west and Omaha and some Lincoln folks,
- [00:00:33.050]a lot of, Huskers in the twin cities
- [00:00:36.770]always great to be here.
- [00:00:38.400]A little nippy last night, we got here a little cold,
- [00:00:40.893](laughter)
- [00:00:42.330]but it's turning out to be a really nice day.
- [00:00:45.090]It's supposed to be about 65 degrees,
- [00:00:46.640]I think later in the game and sun shining and,
- [00:00:48.542]and looking forward to a great game against Minnesota.
- [00:00:51.350]I saw pictures from early in the week in the panhandle,
- [00:00:53.530]they had a little of that white stuff that hit the ground.
- [00:00:55.180]Yeah, it's that time of year, right?
- [00:00:56.341](laughter)
- [00:00:57.174]The corn's coming out of the field and the beans are out
- [00:00:59.888]and, and weather's turning.
- [00:01:02.340]The leaves are turning it's hard to believe
- [00:01:04.790]we're already in the middle of October.
- [00:01:06.250]Before we jump into some other topics,
- [00:01:08.330]a little bit of a heavy heart here today with the tragic
- [00:01:10.780]news we heard yesterday of Erik Chinander, Husker,
- [00:01:12.720]defensive coordinator's dad,
- [00:01:14.410]tragically died in a car accident.
- [00:01:16.090]Yeah, it was really sad to hear
- [00:01:17.963]Coach Chinander is with the team.
- [00:01:20.150]He traveled yesterday and is here for the game today.
- [00:01:23.868]Just a tragic loss of his dad and in Northeast Iowa.
- [00:01:31.367]And, you know, our hearts are with him
- [00:01:33.600]and with his family as he mourns the loss of his dad.
- [00:01:37.070]And I'm sure that his team feels the same way today,
- [00:01:40.060]but yeah, very sad news about Mr. Chinander.
- [00:01:43.610]Well, the university has recently proposed
- [00:01:46.100]some new projects for funding to the legislature,
- [00:01:48.890]what kind of impacts could be on the horizon for Nebraska
- [00:01:52.008]if these proposals from UNL are accepted?
- [00:01:55.320]Well, one of the outtakes of the pandemic
- [00:01:59.360]that we've been living through
- [00:02:00.600]is the stimulus funding that the federal government
- [00:02:02.950]is providing out to local governments.
- [00:02:05.190]So, state governments, as well as local municipalities.
- [00:02:08.590]And in Nebraska, it's anticipated that the State of Nebraska
- [00:02:12.180]is going to receive something over
- [00:02:14.067]$1.1 billion in federal stimulus money
- [00:02:16.640]to the state that our state legislature will be going
- [00:02:20.410]through the appropriations process,
- [00:02:22.200]this coming January and February
- [00:02:23.990]and the upcoming legislative session.
- [00:02:25.460]Governor Ricketts who's here for the game,
- [00:02:27.000]he actually, was just with us
- [00:02:28.800]at our Alumni Association gathering
- [00:02:30.780]a few minutes ago,
- [00:02:32.020]has directed the legislature to appropriate that funding,
- [00:02:35.198]to support transformative big projects in the state.
- [00:02:39.510]And so, last Tuesday, a little over a week ago,
- [00:02:43.282]President Carter of the University of Nebraska system
- [00:02:46.360]testified to the appropriations committee and the
- [00:02:48.370]legislature around proposals,
- [00:02:50.220]the university is bringing forward to be supported.
- [00:02:53.570]We hope by part of that funding,
- [00:02:55.660]then there are a number of things in that,
- [00:02:57.550]about $195 million in total across the university,
- [00:03:01.085]but two big ones at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:03:03.805]One is the rebuilding and expansion and next generation of
- [00:03:08.649]the Holland computing center, which,
- [00:03:11.540]is our super computing center at the university that
- [00:03:13.940]serves all of the University system located in Lincoln,
- [00:03:16.720]but serves all of the campuses of the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:20.330]and building a new super computing center
- [00:03:23.270]on Innovation Campus,
- [00:03:24.610]on Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln,
- [00:03:26.505]about a $50 million project
- [00:03:28.780]that we know will be transformative.
- [00:03:30.560]It will serve 20 to 30 companies.
- [00:03:32.470]Additionally, outside of the university, when it's built,
- [00:03:36.520]allow infrastructure,
- [00:03:38.300]that's really targeted at artificial intelligence,
- [00:03:40.730]cyber security, big issues,
- [00:03:42.953]really that that we're dealing in now,
- [00:03:46.150]particularly in AG, and bio food security,
- [00:03:48.254]cyber security, in particular.
- [00:03:51.240]We also have a proposal in that package for a $25 million
- [00:03:55.163]investment and a companion facility to
- [00:03:58.190]the new National USDA Research Laboratory,
- [00:04:01.520]that's being planned for Nebraska Innovation Campus,
- [00:04:03.591]a new federal lab that will work in precision agriculture
- [00:04:08.500]that will house 60 federal scientists jointly with the
- [00:04:11.450]University of Nebraska, big area for us,
- [00:04:13.937]very excited about that development
- [00:04:15.911]and alongside that they're building
- [00:04:18.450]for the first time in USDA's history,
- [00:04:20.935]a companion facility that will transfer technology
- [00:04:23.873]that will take what's learned in that research,
- [00:04:26.482]create new technology out of it,
- [00:04:28.900]transfer it directly into the AG sector,
- [00:04:31.250]and that's where we're getting a $25 million,
- [00:04:33.900]we hope, investment from the state here with these funds to
- [00:04:37.235]support the building of that companion facility.
- [00:04:40.306]One to one in private public match,
- [00:04:44.030]raising $25 million philanthropically matched with
- [00:04:46.827]$25 million from the state to build that facility.
- [00:04:50.040]So, very excited about both of those.
- [00:04:52.490]They are transformative projects for the University,
- [00:04:55.420]for our business community, for the AG community, as well.
- [00:04:58.930]We estimate that in both of those cases,
- [00:05:02.040]a 20 to 1 return on investment will be possible
- [00:05:05.132]with both of those projects.
- [00:05:07.050]And we're looking forward to the legislature,
- [00:05:08.810]working their way through this coming coming season to
- [00:05:11.940]determine the uses of that federal funding.
- [00:05:14.160]We'll continue to follow that story
- [00:05:16.060]and visiting with Ronnie Green,
- [00:05:17.070]the chancellor, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:05:19.310]Speaking of infrastructure,
- [00:05:20.510]Nebraska's known for research on making our highways safer.
- [00:05:23.620]What's new with the
- [00:05:24.880]Midwest roadside safety facility at Nebraska?
- [00:05:28.770]Well, we, we actually housed at Nebraska
- [00:05:31.740]and our Department of Civil Engineering and our
- [00:05:33.440]College of Engineering National Transportation Center.
- [00:05:36.748]The Midwest roadside safety center is part of that.
- [00:05:41.053]And we have for a long time,
- [00:05:43.240]had an expertise and the design of steel barriers.
- [00:05:46.640]So, think of interstate systems, and guard rails, and
- [00:05:49.660]the way that we have protections built into those systems,
- [00:05:53.799]and our folks have been experts in that arena.
- [00:05:57.260]And they've just recently created the Delta crash cushion,
- [00:06:01.760]that has been developed
- [00:06:02.720]in collaboration with traffic's devices.
- [00:06:04.562]It's about a company that's manufacturing and selling this
- [00:06:07.910]product where the distinguishing feature of these,
- [00:06:10.791]Delta crash cushion side panels is they can absorb the
- [00:06:13.959]kinetic energy during a crash.
- [00:06:16.090]So, think of a car crashing into the guard rail
- [00:06:19.640]that is much safer than
- [00:06:21.597]a typical standing guard rail system.
- [00:06:24.936]So, the transportation officials out there have praised the
- [00:06:28.010]cushions simplicity and requires minimal maintenance.
- [00:06:30.940]It's easy to install and it's, of course,
- [00:06:33.150]providing greater safety on our roadways and highways.
- [00:06:36.880]The design was a six-year industry partnership between
- [00:06:40.560]Nebraska researchers and
- [00:06:42.055]the traffic device's company engineers,
- [00:06:45.450]and was facilitated by our tech transfer arm
- [00:06:49.200]at the university,
- [00:06:50.033]which is called in UTEC Ventures.
- [00:06:52.430]They're our licenser.
- [00:06:53.820]They do our licensing and patenting for
- [00:06:55.970]University Inventions
- [00:06:57.450]and our U and L Industry Relations teams.
- [00:06:59.630]So, a real success story from the
- [00:07:01.310]Midwest Roadside Safety Facility team
- [00:07:03.270]led by Ron Faller, the director, there
- [00:07:06.260]and we hope that it will lead to many lives saved through
- [00:07:09.280]improved highway safety.
- [00:07:10.490]Fantastic, great stuff as always.
- [00:07:12.680]Chancellor Ronnie Green with us here
- [00:07:13.668]on Canada and the kickoff.
- [00:07:15.120]Matt Conney is up next with our Big 10 Blitz.
