This session will discuss how students can find a sense of belonging at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, through OASIS, and diverse student organizations.

- [00:00:05.030]and Intercultural Services, also known as OASIS.
- [00:00:10.740]I will not read the entire statement
- [00:00:13.310]due to the sake of time,
- [00:00:14.470]but what a land grant acknowledgement does
- [00:00:16.490]is pay respect to indigenous people
- [00:00:19.090]by recognizing where they came from
- [00:00:21.810]and affirming who they are today
- [00:00:23.410]so please pause and read through this acknowledgements.
- [00:00:30.360]In OASIS, we want students to understand
- [00:00:32.630]that your success is important to us.
- [00:00:34.940]Our office is dedicated around
- [00:00:36.750]helping students be successful.
- [00:00:38.840]The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center
- [00:00:40.360]is a home away from home where students can be themselves,
- [00:00:43.490]no matter what your identity is.
- [00:00:45.650]Although we emphasize certain populations,
- [00:00:48.130]all students are welcome at OASIS.
- [00:00:52.140]Our first pillar is academic excellence
- [00:00:54.660]and study skills play a large role in your success.
- [00:00:57.510]So OASIS creates spaces and provides resources
- [00:01:00.630]to make sure students don't fall behind academically.
- [00:01:04.020]Students can utilize tutoring services at Study Studio,
- [00:01:08.100]virtually and in person during the week,
- [00:01:11.270]peer mentors are also available to assist students,
- [00:01:14.400]helping with homework, knowing what professor's
- [00:01:16.850]expectations are or reading and understanding a syllabus.
- [00:01:21.160]In collaboration with our campus partners
- [00:01:23.300]we honor students in our program at the academic excellence
- [00:01:26.340]and graduation reception, to acknowledge the hard work
- [00:01:29.320]and dedication put into your academics.
- [00:01:34.400]Our second pillar is social engagement,
- [00:01:37.280]and whether it's at the OASIS Kickoff,
- [00:01:39.370]which is a welcome back celebration
- [00:01:40.900]for students to engage in cultural celebrations,
- [00:01:43.850]hearing about leadership opportunities at Lunch and Learn
- [00:01:47.240]or Stop, Serve and Mingle, where students can meet
- [00:01:50.080]new people while working on arts and crafts
- [00:01:52.450]for local nonprofits.
- [00:01:54.100]There are numerous ways to be socially engaged.
- [00:01:57.590]Students become aware of opportunities
- [00:01:59.400]for growth across campus and how to join communities
- [00:02:02.730]with people you can relate to.
- [00:02:04.620]No matter what your background or identity,
- [00:02:07.100]there's something for everyone at UNL
- [00:02:12.430]OASIS scholars enrolled in the Student Success Seminar
- [00:02:15.210]are invited to the Oasis Welcome,
- [00:02:17.350]where they meet staff, mentors, other first year students,
- [00:02:20.900]and learn more about program requirements.
- [00:02:23.680]For students who are not already connected
- [00:02:25.470]to the Student Success program,
- [00:02:27.610]you can submit an interest form
- [00:02:29.660]or be referred to our program via our website,
- [00:02:33.310]letting us know that you'd be interested in participating.
- [00:02:38.330]Our third and final pillar is diversity awareness
- [00:02:40.930]and studies show that students were better
- [00:02:43.000]in a diverse environment.
- [00:02:44.760]OASIS is a brave space where every voice can be heard
- [00:02:47.550]specifically Dish it Up,
- [00:02:49.340]which is an interactive weekly conversation
- [00:02:52.260]where individuals can share their personal views,
- [00:02:55.190]learn from others and engage in civil discussions
- [00:02:58.050]concerning current events, topics affecting students at UNL
- [00:03:02.850]and national and international happenings.
- [00:03:05.920]Husker Dialogues is a mandatory event
- [00:03:08.240]for first year students about promoting,
- [00:03:10.090]respecting and understanding different perspectives.
- [00:03:14.140]Oasis and JGMC Week celebrates the anniversary
- [00:03:17.050]of our building with various events
- [00:03:19.620]and our Cultural Heritage Month celebrations
- [00:03:22.360]are the (indistinct) Heritage, Black History Month,
- [00:03:26.070]Hispanic Heritage and Native American Heritage.
- [00:03:28.930]It's where we collaborate with campus and community partners
- [00:03:32.220]to host events significant to each culture.
- [00:03:36.310]One of our larger events is the Stroller
- [00:03:39.800]where fraternities and sororities
- [00:03:41.700]compete against one another.
