- [00:00:00.170]Welcome back, it's halftime (people chattering)
- [00:00:01.180]of the Huskers matchup today against the
- [00:00:02.880]Minnesota Golden Gophers.
- [00:00:04.150]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:05.180]a chance to catch up with the President
- [00:00:06.460]of University of Nebraska, Ted Carter.
- [00:00:08.870]Boy, what a tough one last Saturday night was.
- [00:00:11.030]What a wonderful evening it was.
- [00:00:13.020]The whole spectacle was amazing.
- [00:00:14.760]Just wish the final score had been a little different.
- [00:00:17.110]Greg, I'm with you, as I am with all the Husker fans.
- [00:00:20.710]But gosh, we are sure one entertaining football program.
- [00:00:24.630]And as we've been talking about all week,
- [00:00:26.870]we are a good football team.
- [00:00:28.090]And I think the W is gonna start to show up.
- [00:00:30.110]Sure hope so, hopefully today,
- [00:00:31.930]with Minnesota here in Minneapolis.
- [00:00:34.360]Let's bring it back to the University.
- [00:00:36.440]What's been happening that we need to know about?
- [00:00:39.200]Well, as many Nebraskans know,
- [00:00:41.100]this is such a pivotal time for our state.
- [00:00:43.530]There's so many big challenges out there,
- [00:00:45.420]and I'm proud to tell you
- [00:00:46.590]that your University of Nebraska is doing everything we can
- [00:00:50.700]to make a difference for Nebraskans
- [00:00:53.102]and do the things that only the University can do.
- [00:00:55.810]You know, the state's about to receive a fairly large sum
- [00:00:58.300]of money from the Federal Government,
- [00:00:59.950]coming off the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:01:02.350]And we have brought a bunch of really powerful ideas
- [00:01:06.940]to the unicameral for things that we can do
- [00:01:09.440]to change Nebraskan's lives.
- [00:01:11.710]Let's talk more about some of those opportunities.
- [00:01:13.960]So I'll just highlight a couple of them.
- [00:01:15.310]The first one is trying to grow a healthcare workforce
- [00:01:18.530]for rural Nebraska.
- [00:01:20.060]Our state faces urgent workforce shortages.
- [00:01:23.360]A recent report from our experts at the Medical Center show
- [00:01:26.630]that Nebraska counties across the entire state,
- [00:01:29.750]so 91 out of 93 counties,
- [00:01:32.440]that is only an exception to Douglas and Lancaster,
- [00:01:34.870]have designated shortages
- [00:01:36.960]in just about every type of primary care,
- [00:01:39.450]especially in mental health.
- [00:01:42.210]So we think this is the time for us to up our game
- [00:01:45.950]and develop that workforce for rural healthcare.
- [00:01:50.640]We're also taking a look at next generation of Ag Leaders,
- [00:01:53.130]who are gonna feed the world.
- [00:01:54.660]We're already one of the leaders in the world on this,
- [00:01:56.650]but with our global population expected
- [00:01:58.920]to reach just about 10 billion by the year 2050,
- [00:02:02.640]we know that we're gonna have to do more with the water
- [00:02:04.960]and the precious resources that we have.
- [00:02:07.200]We want to be the leader in research
- [00:02:09.310]for how we're gonna be more successful
- [00:02:11.570]in developing our land and doing the best
- [00:02:14.130]we can with water to grow our crops.
- [00:02:16.680]We want to take another deeper look
- [00:02:19.040]at research for pancreatic cancer.
- [00:02:21.190]It's the number two leader for killing people with cancer,
- [00:02:25.140]about a 90% mortality rate
- [00:02:26.970]because it shows up so late.
- [00:02:28.360]By the time you find out, it's already gone
- [00:02:30.080]to your other organs.
- [00:02:31.300]So we want our researchers at the Med Center to be able
- [00:02:33.490]to do more on providing answers and solutions
- [00:02:36.510]with pancreatic cancer.
- [00:02:38.040]And finally growing a talented STEM workforce
- [00:02:40.530]who are gonna fill the needs for our state.
- [00:02:43.260]We have 50,000 open jobs in the state.
- [00:02:46.420]Many of them are openings in high skill, high demand,
- [00:02:49.290]high wage jobs that we can only fill
- [00:02:52.000]with graduates coming out of our University.
- [00:02:53.690]So these are just some of the big ticket areas
- [00:02:55.580]that we're working on.
- [00:02:56.640]Mentioned STEM, IT, cybersecurity are areas
- [00:02:59.570]of real growth in the State of Nebraska.
- [00:03:02.040]Can you tell us more
- [00:03:02.900]about the work the University is doing around tech?
- [00:03:05.670]So tech impacts just about everything we do today.
- [00:03:08.320]There's so many technology related problems to solve
- [00:03:11.200]and really not enough people to go around to help them.
- [00:03:13.890]Our computers have permeated more and more
- [00:03:16.190]through our lives.
- [00:03:17.023]Cybersecurity is now one
- [00:03:18.220]of the most important workforce needs that we have,
- [00:03:22.870]that they, these are the weapons and the people
- [00:03:24.930]that we need to help protect our home networks,
- [00:03:27.540]robotics to medicine.
- [00:03:28.930]I mean, everything that we touch now goes
- [00:03:30.780]through our computers.
- [00:03:32.350]Tech security continues to be the national challenge
- [00:03:35.040]with damages related to cyber crime projected
- [00:03:38.220]to hit about $6 trillion annually just this year.
- [00:03:41.670]Protecting these systems is critical,
- [00:03:43.320]and we see growing opportunities
- [00:03:44.920]in areas like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
- [00:03:48.890]So we have incredible computing assets already,
- [00:03:51.680]such as the Holland Computing Center at UNL,
- [00:03:54.480]which boasts the fastest resources in the State of Nebraska.
- [00:03:57.850]So we're looking to expand
- [00:03:59.370]that Holland Computing Center's capacity
- [00:04:01.170]for high-speed computing, research, and company growth.
- [00:04:05.330]And the STEM TRAIL Center, at UNO also serves as a voice
- [00:04:08.190]for STEM needs in the Omaha area.
- [00:04:10.490]Their team works with hundreds of partners
- [00:04:12.770]to identify needs within the local economy
- [00:04:14.940]and facilitate opportunities related to technology.
- [00:04:17.970]So we're looking to expand this capacity
- [00:04:20.020]at the STEM TRAIL Center that would allow us
- [00:04:22.180]to train Nebraskans, pursuing these high skill, high demand
- [00:04:25.470]and high wage jobs.
- [00:04:26.840]Very good information for all of us to know about.
- [00:04:29.520]All right, anything else we need to hear
- [00:04:31.890]from you before we let you get back to the game?
- [00:04:34.490]Keep the faith, the wins are gonna come, keep the faith.
- [00:04:37.730]That's the way (chuckling) to do it.
- [00:04:38.600]It's gonna be...
- [00:04:40.070]We still have a lot to play for, I think, in this season.
- [00:04:42.500]Good to see you as always.
- [00:04:43.490]Always good to see you.
- [00:04:44.460]Ted Carter, with us here at halftime.
- [00:04:46.440]We've got more coming up next.
