- [00:00:00.390]We are back Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:00:01.470]Huskers in Michigan tonight at 6:45 for the kick.
- [00:00:04.330]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:05.410]a chance before the game starts to get updated with the
- [00:00:08.580]chancellor from the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:10.190]Lincoln Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.370]And uh, this is a big game.
- [00:00:13.080]This is going to be so fun.
- [00:00:14.440]Here's Michigan night game Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:16.410]I bet you are so excited and can't wait.
- [00:00:18.810]Uh, I sure am Greg, you know, I,
- [00:00:21.090]as fate would have it I've actually been up in Michigan this
- [00:00:24.370]past week. You know, I was up there for
- [00:00:25.820]the MSU game a couple of weeks ago.
- [00:00:27.940]And I was back up into Lansing last weekend,
- [00:00:30.790]not this past weekend.
- [00:00:31.920]I was giving my friends up there a hard time because one
- [00:00:34.520]of the people I work with as a Michigan grad
- [00:00:36.990]and I said, so we got you coming into 'our' house tonight.
- [00:00:40.010]You know, so it was so great to have Michigan here
- [00:00:42.410]looking forward to a great game,
- [00:00:43.610]after a great game last week for homecoming.
- [00:00:46.010]You know I think the whole state just went on a high
- [00:00:49.120]for, you know, not only that night,
- [00:00:51.040]but has been on a high all week.
- [00:00:52.780]So I'm really looking forward to a great game tonight
- [00:00:54.876]against the Michigan Wolverines.
- [00:00:56.430]Chancellor the whole week was fantastic, wasn't it?
- [00:00:58.330]The homecoming, all the festivities that were going on.
- [00:01:00.590]It was, just was a wonderful week to be on campus.
- [00:01:02.753]Yeah, it, it was, it was just all the
- [00:01:04.490]tradition-rich things that we do around homecoming.
- [00:01:06.988]And we've actually added some to that.
- [00:01:09.100]We talked a little bit about that last week, uh, with our
- [00:01:11.690]students to see the student body so energized and excited,
- [00:01:15.030]and then to have a great game to cap it off like that.
- [00:01:17.840]Um, and the weather even held for us, right?
- [00:01:20.434]Cause it was a, it was a beautiful evening.
- [00:01:22.180]And, and so looking forward to a great game here tonight.
- [00:01:25.320]Well, the university has certainly been strong
- [00:01:27.440]in research in a number of areas, agriculture,
- [00:01:29.291]and national defense.
- [00:01:30.550]You made some news recent with a new facility that is
- [00:01:32.880]combining those strengths in the name of a better security
- [00:01:36.370]for the food supply. What can you tell us about that?
- [00:01:38.830]Yeah, Greg, well, you know, as a,
- [00:01:40.440]as a public research University,
- [00:01:42.210]as the Land Grant University for the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:45.320]UNL considers ourselves to be unparalleled in a lot of ways.
- [00:01:49.690]In particular, in our research areas that are important to
- [00:01:53.300]to Nebraska and to the world.
- [00:01:55.860]We have a long history of solving complex problems here
- [00:01:59.780]uh, at the university.
- [00:02:01.190]And um, this recently we announced a new partnership,
- [00:02:06.240]a new collaborative Biosecurity laboratory jointly
- [00:02:09.960]between our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources and the
- [00:02:13.180]National Strategic Research Institute here at the across
- [00:02:16.350]the university of Nebraska that is designed around the whole
- [00:02:20.980]area of food and Ag Biosecurity.
- [00:02:23.320]So an increasingly important problem for us in the
- [00:02:26.950]interconnected world that we live in.
- [00:02:29.320]Um, this was an exciting five-year partnership that was
- [00:02:32.540]announced, uh, this new laboratory is actually located on
- [00:02:36.110]East Campus in the Ken Morrison Life Sciences Research
- [00:02:40.100]Center there on East Campus.
- [00:02:42.042]It will allow us to increase research and development and Ag
- [00:02:46.140]and Natural Resources, Security, Defense,
- [00:02:49.410]and Countermeasures.
- [00:02:50.910]Um, Biological Defense, Biosurveillance,
- [00:02:53.483]Biodetection, and diagnostic tools
- [00:02:56.050]and, and uh strangely enough pandemic preparedness.
- [00:03:00.060]Uh, related to food systems in particular,
- [00:03:03.150]even as we saw in the early stages of the COVID pandemic,
- [00:03:06.300]everybody remembers trying to get, you know,
- [00:03:08.380]their food in place,
- [00:03:09.570]and their meat in place in particular.
- [00:03:11.800]Um, this will also be tied
- [00:03:14.010]to our Nebraska Center for Virology.
- [00:03:16.040]That's also housed in the Ken Morrison
- [00:03:17.798]Life Sciences Research Center.
- [00:03:20.730]That'll be led by Joshua Santarpia,
- [00:03:23.640]who is with the Nebraska Strategic Research Institute.
- [00:03:27.120]He's actually a professor in Microbiology and Pathology at
- [00:03:30.520]the University of Nebraska Medical Center and adjunct
- [00:03:32.890]faculty with us here at UNL.
- [00:03:35.990]I'm so excited about this.
- [00:03:38.350]It's tied to NSRI,
- [00:03:40.500]then , the - the National Strategic Research Institute,
- [00:03:44.060]that is one of 14 University affiliated research centers
- [00:03:48.130]with the Department of Defense.
- [00:03:49.810]Um, you know, working in our case
- [00:03:52.600]directly under the command and work with
- [00:03:54.780]STRATCOM with a combatant command.
- [00:03:57.170]So, uh, excited about it.
- [00:03:58.578]This new collaborative Biosecurity laboratory between INR
- [00:04:02.200]in Nebraska at National Strategic Research Institute.
- [00:04:05.670]Oh, that is, it's really exciting.
- [00:04:07.110]You also have recently announced a new academic major for
- [00:04:10.470]undergraduates.
- [00:04:11.470]That's a unique combination of Business and Law.
- [00:04:14.360]What's that going to mean for students in our state?
- [00:04:16.560]We were really pleased to get approval here
- [00:04:19.270]recently from the Board of Regions and the,
- [00:04:21.393]and the State Coordinating Commission of Higher Education to
- [00:04:24.530]establish a new Business and Law major for students.
- [00:04:28.900]We actually had a Business and Law minor,
- [00:04:31.540]but we did not have a full major in place that will address
- [00:04:35.500]a critical talent shortage and put,
- [00:04:37.600]puts us as one of the few Universities in the country to
- [00:04:40.810]help step forward in this area that bridges,
- [00:04:44.050]Business and Law in an interdisciplinary way that will help
- [00:04:48.700]them to not only, uh
- [00:04:50.943]you know, uh, not be a JD,
- [00:04:53.300]not be a lawyer,
- [00:04:54.850]but be able to bring law into the business professions.
- [00:04:58.580]Courses in this program are developed and taught jointly by
- [00:05:03.120]faculty in the College of Law,
- [00:05:05.320]in the College of Business
- [00:05:07.040]and in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:05:09.333]And as I said earlier,
- [00:05:11.100]kind of building off the success that we saw in the business
- [00:05:14.390]in Law Minor that we started in, in Fall of 2018.
- [00:05:18.620]So you can envision this as a program that will expand
- [00:05:22.190]students' employment possibilities in growing fields like:
- [00:05:25.930]Regulatory Compliance, Financial Services,
- [00:05:28.590]Securities Regulation, Human Resources, Real Estate,
- [00:05:32.550]and Corporate Social Responsibility.
- [00:05:34.750]Which is becoming an increasing part of Corporate Governance
- [00:05:38.290]um, in the business world.
- [00:05:40.060]So, excited about this.
- [00:05:41.410]We're the only Big Ten school
- [00:05:43.940]to offer this Business and Law major.
- [00:05:46.980]Um, can start right away.
- [00:05:48.390]Students can be signing up for that to go directly into this
- [00:05:51.660]major in this next school year.
- [00:05:53.450]And just another example, um, Greg, of how
- [00:05:57.180]Nebraska's Flagship University
- [00:05:58.950]is responding to the needs of our state,
- [00:06:00.970]responding to the needs of the students that we have to
- [00:06:03.990]create opportunities for them in the future.
- [00:06:06.690]Well, that is really neat.
- [00:06:07.680]I'm sure that is going to pique some interest in some of our
- [00:06:10.240]parents out there listening for their students who may be
- [00:06:13.290]thinking about coming to the University.
- [00:06:14.610]Wonderful news there.
- [00:06:15.770]Great to see you. Next week we go back on the road.
- [00:06:17.800]We're going to go to Minneapolis.
- [00:06:18.730]We get to go up to the Twin Cities
- [00:06:20.570]and looking forward to that trip as well.
- [00:06:22.590]I've been telling everybody I started,
- [00:06:24.437]I started the week before homecoming, going into homecoming,
- [00:06:27.860]I started saying, you know, um,
- [00:06:30.620]pretty sure we can beat Northwestern, beat Michigan,
- [00:06:33.510]beat Minnesota, and beat Purdue.
- [00:06:35.090]And it'll be a clean October.
- [00:06:36.350]So looking forward to seeing that happen.
- [00:06:37.960]One mark down, let's go the next one.
- [00:06:39.730]Good to see you.
- [00:06:40.563]Chancellor Ronnie Green with us here
- [00:06:41.780]on a Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:06:43.070]Matt Coatney is coming up next with our Big Ten Blitz.
