- [00:00:00.420]Welcome back, it's halftime of the Huskers match up with
- [00:00:02.430]the Michigan Wolverines. And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:04.500]a chance to talk to the president of the University of
- [00:00:06.740]Nebraska, Ted Carter.
- [00:00:08.390]And I'm sure, you're smiling a lot.
- [00:00:10.280]I'm sure you're still happy about the way that homecoming
- [00:00:12.740]game went last week.
- [00:00:14.080]What a great week. All the homecoming events,
- [00:00:16.840]the induction of the class of 2021 hall of fame,
- [00:00:20.290]very special.
- [00:00:21.460]And then to see our Huskers come out and play like
- [00:00:24.100]we know they can play and put up that amount of points.
- [00:00:27.060]And still be a very stout defense. It was a great victory.
- [00:00:30.140]Very, very nice night.
- [00:00:31.197]And then the third, I don't-
- [00:00:32.586]Were you still around the third quarter or
- [00:00:33.660]the fourth quarter?
- [00:00:34.493]How about that? I watch every play.
- [00:00:35.450]That, that opening in the fourth quarter
- [00:00:37.300]with the light show.
- [00:00:38.470]I hope we do that every game. That was truly electric.
- [00:00:42.150]I've still got goosebumps thinking about that.
- [00:00:44.490]This week, I understand you testified at the legislature
- [00:00:48.280]on what's going on at the Capitol.
- [00:00:49.820]What should the folks need to know?
- [00:00:51.790]Greg as you know, I work very closely with our
- [00:00:54.510]policymakers and our state legislature.
- [00:00:57.470]I did recently speak at an appropriations committee
- [00:01:00.600]on what is known as LR 178.
- [00:01:02.990]And this is an interim study looking for feedback from
- [00:01:06.510]leaders across Nebraska on the dollars that our state is
- [00:01:09.540]gonna receive from the federal government
- [00:01:12.030]part of the American rescue plan of 2021
- [00:01:14.600]and how they might be best used.
- [00:01:16.130]So we came with our list of where we thought
- [00:01:19.130]we could do the most good.
- [00:01:21.090]And there are a lot of things that the university can only
- [00:01:23.730]do that we think that we're uniquely positioned to help out.
- [00:01:27.620]For example, expanding rural health care,
- [00:01:30.030]a partnership between UNMC and UNK out in Carney.
- [00:01:34.730]We think that's really important.
- [00:01:36.050]I mean, we need more nurses.
- [00:01:37.520]We need more mental health care specialists,
- [00:01:40.210]investments in economic development
- [00:01:42.210]for agriculture at our Nebraska innovation campus,
- [00:01:45.400]expanding our world renowned biomechanics at UNO
- [00:01:49.540]and investing in pancreatic cancer research at UNMC.
- [00:01:52.350]So those are some of the highlights of things that we're
- [00:01:54.130]bringing to the legislature.
- [00:01:55.450]You mentioned cancer.
- [00:01:56.310]October's national breast cancer awareness month,
- [00:01:59.420]and it affects so many families, so many women
- [00:02:02.360]and their families throughout the state of Nebraska.
- [00:02:05.000]Can you talk a little bit about what the university is doing
- [00:02:08.010]to help combat this disease?
- [00:02:10.690]Well, Greg, cancer rates in our state,
- [00:02:12.620]and I think a lot of people know this,
- [00:02:13.940]are significantly higher than the national average.
- [00:02:16.920]Two out of every five Nebraskans will,
- [00:02:19.700]at some point in their lifetime,
- [00:02:21.060]hear the words "you have cancer".
- [00:02:23.250]This is a disease that affects each and every one of us.
- [00:02:26.120]We know people that are affected by this.
- [00:02:28.620]So we need to continue the great work that's done.
- [00:02:30.720]For example, at the buffet cancer center
- [00:02:32.780]and our university of Nebraska Medical Center,
- [00:02:34.530]it's absolutely critical
- [00:02:36.080]in treating and caring for our Nebraskans.
- [00:02:38.440]Now, the research they're conducting has a major impact
- [00:02:40.470]on the health and quality of life experienced by our friends
- [00:02:43.210]and family members and colleagues with cancer.
- [00:02:45.670]We just need to make sure they continue to get the best care
- [00:02:47.990]and we continue to do meaningful research.
- [00:02:50.650]I've also been hearing and reading some about Pen-
- [00:02:53.190]pancreatic cancer.
- [00:02:54.390]And you mentioned it earlier on, talked a little bit
- [00:02:57.780]about that, and the university's involvement as well.
- [00:03:00.720]So pancreatic cancer is one of the nation's
- [00:03:02.890]and Nebraska's, unfortunately, most lethal cancers.
- [00:03:06.570]90% Gregg.
- [00:03:08.400]90% of the people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die
- [00:03:12.100]of that disease.
- [00:03:13.770]And that's what makes pancreatic cancer so deadly.
- [00:03:16.310]It's typically not detected until it's already
- [00:03:18.400]well advanced.
- [00:03:19.600]In most cases it's found after
- [00:03:21.020]it's already spread to other organs.
- [00:03:22.950]So this is really important to us here in Nebraska.
- [00:03:25.390]There'll be 250 people this year in the state
- [00:03:28.410]that will be diagnosed.
- [00:03:30.030]Fewer than 9% of those people will live beyond
- [00:03:32.420]five years. So it's, it's important to us.
- [00:03:36.020]And, you know, by the year 2030,
- [00:03:37.230]pancreatic cancer will be the number two
- [00:03:39.670]form of cancer for cancer related mortality.
- [00:03:44.400]So we're looking for ways to find pancreatic cancer earlier,
- [00:03:47.570]and we're looking for our best and brightest scientists to
- [00:03:50.470]do meaningful research here so that we can get after this
- [00:03:53.690]and solve this very, very tough problem.
- [00:03:56.080]Cancer treatment and the care.
- [00:03:57.780]It's not the only thing that the university is doing to help
- [00:04:00.220]make our state healthier.
- [00:04:02.010]Tell us something about the healthcare related initiatives
- [00:04:04.580]that are going on across the university.
- [00:04:07.440]Well, it won't surprise a lot of folks here,
- [00:04:09.240]when it comes to healthcare professionals,
- [00:04:11.020]UNMC is one of the best in the country.
- [00:04:13.670]They train over half the doctors,
- [00:04:15.450]dentists and nurses in our state.
- [00:04:18.040]UNMC is a great place for students to learn
- [00:04:21.300]so that the doctors, nurses,
- [00:04:22.730]public health professionals, physical therapists,
- [00:04:24.920]and others who go out into our communities across the state
- [00:04:27.700]can have the most current knowledge and skills.
- [00:04:30.640]But we do have a shortage of nurses,
- [00:04:32.130]allied health workers and physicians,
- [00:04:33.840]particularly in the rural areas.
- [00:04:35.650]And that's why UNMC's nursing program,
- [00:04:37.800]which has five divisions across the state is so important.
- [00:04:41.190]And the health science complex in Carney is also playing a
- [00:04:43.650]major role in educating nurses, physical therapists,
- [00:04:46.940]and other healthcare professionals from rural Nebraska.
- [00:04:50.190]I'll tell you, we're laser focused on bringing the best and
- [00:04:52.920]brightest in Nebraska, not just within the state,
- [00:04:54.770]from out of state, to do research and training on tomorrow's
- [00:04:57.880]healthcare professionals and keeping them here in Nebraska.
- [00:05:00.660]Well, I know you and all Nebraskans
- [00:05:02.010]should be very proud of the work going on at UNMC.
- [00:05:04.440]So, all right, halftime,
- [00:05:05.750]Husker nation fired up for football.
- [00:05:08.450]Volleyball's cranking away. I know this is exciting.
- [00:05:10.760]You've got your hockey going on at UNO.
- [00:05:12.410]This is an exciting time to be a sports fan.
- [00:05:14.100]It is, this is the best time of year,
- [00:05:16.580]no matter what sport you're in love with,
- [00:05:18.750]it's happening here on one of our campuses.
- [00:05:20.950]And there isn't anything more exciting than
- [00:05:22.980]Nebraska, Michigan football.
- [00:05:24.760]Good stuff. President Ted Carter with us here at halftime.
- [00:05:27.420]We've got more coming up next.
