Diversity and Inclusion Gathering Space Opens at College of Business
Huskers came together to celebrate the grand opening of a space dedicated to furthering diversity and inclusivity in the College of Business at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The college’s Diversity and Inclusion Gathering Space — nicknamed DIGS — serves as a hub for conversation, inclusive programs and gatherings to help all students feel they belong in the Nebraska Business community.

[00:00:00.630]Welcome to the grand opening
[00:00:02.590]of the Diversity and Inclusion Gathering Space
[00:00:04.700]here in Howard L Hawks Hall.
[00:00:06.800]The DIGS as it has become known,
[00:00:09.790]is a space we want to evolve and grow,
[00:00:12.210]as our Nebraska business community
[00:00:14.020]continues to cultivate an inclusive environment.
[00:00:17.380]Often students in minority groups feel ostracized
[00:00:20.490]when attending predominantly white institutions or PWS.
[00:00:25.410]I want to provide these students with a sense of belonging
[00:00:27.940]and show them that any struggles they may have
[00:00:30.430]do not need to be faced alone.
[00:00:32.630]There are resources and people
[00:00:34.030]at the college of business ready to help.
[00:00:37.530]That is why DIGS is important.
[00:00:39.640]It provides a space where you can come as you are
[00:00:42.160]and build your community here on campus.
[00:00:45.320]It is an opportunity for our institutional mission
[00:00:47.520]of inclusive excellence to be realized.
[00:00:50.000]This means that the space will encourage
[00:00:52.160]and facilitate learning, growth, participation,
[00:00:56.020]and success among all students
[00:00:58.660]while ensuring that those who feel marginalized
[00:01:01.400]or represent minoritized identities
[00:01:03.430]know for certain that they matter and that our success,
[00:01:08.190]the universities and the college
[00:01:09.830]is wrapped in their success.
[00:01:12.280]That is inclusive excellence.
[00:01:14.940]Success in our journey requires commitment
[00:01:18.260]and action from all of us.
[00:01:21.040]This is an endeavor where we have been intentional
[00:01:24.420]and commit every day to be better to lead by example,
[00:01:28.840]it's imperative to our mission.
[00:01:31.250]Building a sense of belonging through yourself
[00:01:33.100]and others is an active process.
[00:01:35.400]I encourage all of our fellow students
[00:01:37.100]to introduce themselves to their classmates,
[00:01:39.750]make others feel comfortable and be welcoming to all.
[00:01:43.300]Not all impacts have to be large-scale to be meaningful.
[00:01:46.900]This community commitment
[00:01:48.400]is what makes me excited about DIGS.
[00:01:51.050]It is co-created by our community
[00:01:53.180]and will continue to evolve.
[00:01:55.630]During its soft launch, our students,
[00:01:57.830]especially our inclusion focused student orgs,
[00:02:01.710]began to use the space and make it theirs.
[00:02:05.700]As current leaders,
[00:02:06.670]we need to answer this invitation to be inclusive.
[00:02:09.660]Together, we are responsible for finding our way
[00:02:13.180]and being better.
[00:02:15.090]Together, we drive discovery, create opportunity
[00:02:18.330]and empower individuals to lead the future of business.
[00:02:21.470]And it's reminding us every day why we are here
[00:02:24.200]and we are here together.
