- [00:00:29.410]that we're capping off today

- [00:00:37.480]so we're excited about that.
- [00:00:39.313]Got all of October and November in front of us.

- [00:00:56.833]with the Wildcats visiting us.
- [00:00:59.330]They have great football fundamentals
- [00:01:00.900]and they seem to be getting better
- [00:01:02.580]as their season goes on.
- [00:01:03.800]They always play us tough here.
- [00:01:05.560]And we always play them tough there,

- [00:01:13.704]Love night games in Memorial City.
- [00:01:14.537]We mentioned homecoming.
- [00:01:15.370]What have been some of the highlights
- [00:01:16.460]around the campus this week?
- [00:01:17.940]Well, homecoming's a big tradition for us
- [00:01:19.760]at UNL of course, a week long kind of tradition
- [00:01:23.230]and so there's been a lot of activity
- [00:01:25.080]throughout the week this past week.
- [00:01:27.060]The blood drive is always a big part of that
- [00:01:28.900]for our students and for our faculty and staff.
- [00:01:31.160]It's a great way to get started and give back.
- [00:01:33.930]We did this past week on Monday with Showtime.
- [00:01:36.850]Where used to be called the Jester Competition
- [00:01:39.740]for those of us who are a little older alumni.
- [00:01:43.297]But that was actually moved outdoors this year.
- [00:01:47.090]They did it on the Vine Street fields
- [00:01:48.810]and we had a couple thousand students
- [00:01:50.270]who were there participating on Monday night.
- [00:01:52.000]I was blessed to be a part of that as well
- [00:01:54.690]with a little dance routine with one of the groups.
- [00:01:57.182]We had traditional on Tuesday of a scavenger hunt
- [00:02:01.810]with clues around campus
- [00:02:03.180]about traditions with our Student Alumni Association.
- [00:02:06.530]Corn hole tournament on Wednesday,
- [00:02:08.220]multi-cultural mixer on Thursday
- [00:02:10.540]that our own Dr. Lawrence Chatters,
- [00:02:12.670]our new Diversity Equity and Inclusion leader
- [00:02:15.061]with Husker Athletics, was part of.
- [00:02:17.500]Homecoming concert on Thursday night.
- [00:02:19.690]Big corn stalk festival on the mall yesterday
- [00:02:22.587]with the parade and activities for families after that.
- [00:02:27.120]So it's just been a great week.
- [00:02:28.800]A great part of the tradition, the student experience
- [00:02:32.130]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:02:34.130]It's been great to celebrate.
- [00:02:35.590]I think most people have really fond memories
- [00:02:37.630]of homecoming week as a student,
- [00:02:39.400]as you mentioned there.
- [00:02:40.600]We were in East Lansing last week
- [00:02:42.160]when we heard the news that the state lost a civic
- [00:02:44.580]and philanthropic leader with strong ties
- [00:02:49.290]to the entire system,
- [00:02:51.010]but obviously the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:02:53.520]and Husker Athletics.
- [00:02:54.940]Tell our audience more about this.
- [00:02:56.630]Well as you mentioned, Greg,
- [00:02:58.530]we got the news when we were in East Lansing
- [00:03:00.840]that Walter Scott, Jr.,
- [00:03:03.073]a giant in Nebraska for his lifetime,
- [00:03:07.140]passed away last Saturday morning in Omaha.
- [00:03:10.290]A giant figure in the construction industry in particular,
- [00:03:13.680]but also in the building of the state in many ways.
- [00:03:17.077]Left a big imprint on Omaha certainly,
- [00:03:20.040]but the state as a whole,
- [00:03:21.520]is an influential philanthropist.
- [00:03:23.400]He was 90 at his passing,
- [00:03:25.630]so he had a long life, but a very impactful life.
- [00:03:30.230]Spent his entire career with Peter Kiewit and Sons
- [00:03:33.040]corporation in Omaha.
- [00:03:34.320]He started as an engineer at the very beginning,
- [00:03:36.670]he was an engineering graduate actually from Colorado State.
- [00:03:39.836]He worked his way up to succeed the legendary Peter Kiewit
- [00:03:44.200]as the chairman and chief executive officer
- [00:03:46.510]of Kiewit during his career,
- [00:03:48.070]but he, beyond that,
- [00:03:50.430]and his impact professionally,
- [00:03:53.196]he left an even bigger mark as a civic leader
- [00:03:56.140]in our state.
- [00:03:56.973]The co-founder of the philanthropic fundraising organization
- [00:04:00.000]in Omaha called Heritage Services
- [00:04:02.630]that he led for over 30 years in his life.
- [00:04:07.180]Had an outsize kind of hand in bringing together
- [00:04:10.180]philanthropy with over a billion dollars
- [00:04:12.790]that was invested in various projects in Omaha
- [00:04:16.000]and across the state.
- [00:04:17.630]The Scott Foundation that he and his wife Suzanne
- [00:04:20.920]founded a number of years ago
- [00:04:23.140]helped to secure funds for the Peter Kiewit Institute
- [00:04:26.410]on the UNO campus, that has a partnership with UNL
- [00:04:30.600]and our college of engineering
- [00:04:31.840]and the presence of the college of engineering
- [00:04:33.993]on the Omaha campus.
- [00:04:35.820]The Scott Scholars that they have supported ,
- [00:04:39.141]over 100 students that are full ride scholarships.
- [00:04:41.610]Many UNL students that are studying engineering
- [00:04:44.310]on the Omaha campus,
- [00:04:46.010]has been a whole generation of transformation through that.
- [00:04:51.493]They've been recognized for so many ways,
- [00:04:54.130]so many different things they've done philanthropically.
- [00:04:56.710]Here at UNL, big supporter of athletics,
- [00:05:00.350]was the recipient of the Clarence Swanson
- [00:05:03.310]Meritory Service Award for their generosity
- [00:05:06.290]to Nebraska athletics a number of years ago.
- [00:05:09.130]Long time season ticket holders for
- [00:05:12.400]Husker football, were involved in our student life complex
- [00:05:17.300]and supporting the student life complex in athletics.
- [00:05:20.460]The NAPL, the Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory,
- [00:05:24.230]strong supporter philanthropically there as well.
- [00:05:27.400]And then more recently,
- [00:05:29.771]Mr. Scott and his foundation are part of the philanthropy
- [00:05:34.730]in the Go Big project that we currently have underway
- [00:05:37.670]is a significant gift there,
- [00:05:39.850]as well as in Kiewit Hall,
- [00:05:41.710]the new Kiewit Hall construction
- [00:05:43.930]for our new instructional facility
- [00:05:45.768]in the college of engineering.
- [00:05:48.750]And just one kind of historical note.
- [00:05:51.790]Walter's father worked for the contractor
- [00:05:56.000]that built Memorial Stadium and Moral Hall
- [00:05:59.130]State Museum and Elephant Hall here on campus.
- [00:06:02.570]You couldn't find a more model citizen
- [00:06:05.064]and contributor and builder of Nebraska
- [00:06:07.950]than Mr. Walter Scott, Jr. And we'll miss him,
- [00:06:10.619]but we celebrate his life.
- [00:06:14.100]I know his family is doing currently,
- [00:06:16.533]but lost a giant.
- [00:06:18.970]Thank you for laying all that out.
- [00:06:21.300]What a remarkable man, and contributions
- [00:06:23.530]to the state of Nebraska
- [00:06:24.480]and obviously to the university systems.
- [00:06:26.270]I don't know how you're keeping yourself straight.
- [00:06:27.830]You have so much that has gone on the last couple days.
- [00:06:30.050]We appreciate the time,
- [00:06:31.390]but it's been fun though.
- [00:06:32.223]Yeah it has been fun.
