- [00:00:03.600]I'm Nick Pace
- [00:00:04.560]and I serve as Chair of the Department
- [00:00:06.258]of Educational Administration here at
- [00:00:08.041]The University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:10.582]I've been at UNL
- [00:00:12.030]since 2017.
- [00:00:14.064]I am a former
- [00:00:15.643]social worker,
- [00:00:16.680]former middle and
- [00:00:18.350]high school teacher,
- [00:00:19.477]former secondary school principal.
- [00:00:22.330]Prior to my time at UNL,
- [00:00:25.470]I served at the
- [00:00:26.185]University of Northern Iowa
- [00:00:27.539]for 17 years
- [00:00:28.656]in teacher education
- [00:00:30.778]and also educational leadership.
- [00:00:32.940]I'm really interested in how
- [00:00:34.983]principals do their work.
- [00:00:36.293]I think,
- [00:00:37.200]school leadership is
- [00:00:39.119]constantly
- [00:00:40.244]becoming more challenging
- [00:00:42.060]more important.
- [00:00:44.280]And so preparing school
- [00:00:46.192]leaders for that reality,
- [00:00:48.510]so that they are well-prepared
- [00:00:51.336]with background knowledge,
- [00:00:52.770]but also dispositionally
- [00:00:55.078]and interpersonally to
- [00:00:56.803]handle the things that
- [00:00:57.917]are coming at them.
- [00:00:59.152]And
- [00:01:00.150]building those
- [00:01:01.228]future school leaders has been
- [00:01:03.242]a passion for me and something
- [00:01:04.710]that I really enjoy,
- [00:01:06.420]I think good leaders
- [00:01:07.625]take care of a lot of
- [00:01:08.918]things that help other people
- [00:01:10.434]be successful.
- [00:01:12.250]And I take a lot of energy
- [00:01:13.826]in that and
- [00:01:15.331]I'm fortunate to have
- [00:01:17.140]a fabulous group of,
- [00:01:18.783]of scholars and leaders
- [00:01:20.320]to work with here at UNL,
- [00:01:22.260]who are remarkable researchers,
- [00:01:24.679]they're award-winning teachers
- [00:01:26.679]and they're just first-class people.
- [00:01:28.920]And so we've spent a lot of time
- [00:01:30.708]specifically honing in on what
- [00:01:33.240]exactly is going to help those
- [00:01:36.347]scholars and leaders be successful.
- [00:01:38.489]And our, our faculty do
- [00:01:40.661]a remarkable job of
- [00:01:42.180]creating those experiences
- [00:01:43.508]for students.
- [00:01:44.820]We're approaching things from
- [00:01:46.066]a P-20 systems perspective.
- [00:01:48.540]How do we get school leaders
- [00:01:50.130]talking to higher education leaders?
- [00:01:52.650]How do we all work together,
- [00:01:54.000]for the benefit of
- [00:01:56.430]of students and serving
- [00:01:57.914]them as best we can?
- [00:02:00.510]They're very focused on equity
- [00:02:03.330]and opportunity for all.
- [00:02:04.827]They're very focused on excellence
- [00:02:07.170]and supporting people
- [00:02:08.680]to make the kind of impact
- [00:02:10.318]as scholars and leaders
- [00:02:12.390]that they want,
- [00:02:13.094]that they want to have.
- [00:02:14.520]We've made some real
- [00:02:15.640]intentional efforts around
- [00:02:17.700]inclusivity and inclusive excellence,
- [00:02:20.220]going along with
- [00:02:21.052]the university's mission,
- [00:02:22.935]and our journey in that respect.
- [00:02:24.840]Because we know
- [00:02:26.444]that there are some
- [00:02:27.900]underserved populations
- [00:02:31.196]and groups that have not
- [00:02:32.638]been well-represented or
- [00:02:34.063]particularly well-served
- [00:02:35.939]by traditional higher education.
- [00:02:38.610]And if we're going to achieve
- [00:02:40.051]the mission that we have
- [00:02:41.193]as an institution
- [00:02:42.764]and as
- [00:02:43.744]individuals and faculty
- [00:02:45.035]members of a team.
- [00:02:46.860]We know we've got to
- [00:02:47.799]be very attentive
- [00:02:49.392]to those efforts
- [00:02:50.076]and approach things
- [00:02:51.563]in an intentional way.
- [00:02:53.700]The Department of Education Administration
- [00:02:55.549]was an early leader
- [00:02:57.201]in online,
- [00:02:58.841]in the online education.
- [00:03:00.190]We're very proud of that history and
- [00:03:02.317]our faculty have been doing online
- [00:03:04.630]education for many years
- [00:03:06.853]at a very high level.
- [00:03:08.489]We've earned a lot of
- [00:03:10.000]accolades and awards
- [00:03:11.192]for those efforts.
- [00:03:12.928]Whether they are
- [00:03:14.260]in hybrid learning environments,
- [00:03:16.415]or exclusively online,
- [00:03:18.970]online programs.
- [00:03:20.646]Our students have a terrific
- [00:03:22.540]array of resources to
- [00:03:24.099]support their academic,
- [00:03:26.200]to support their academic journeys.
- [00:03:28.387]We have an active
- [00:03:29.620]graduate student alliance
- [00:03:31.006]in the department with,
- [00:03:33.225]with an active
- [00:03:34.510]social media presence
- [00:03:36.049]in a learning community
- [00:03:37.210]and it's really
- [00:03:38.556]exciting to see those
- [00:03:39.589]relationships build
- [00:03:41.120]across Nebraska,
- [00:03:41.980]across the country,
- [00:03:44.039]and, and beyond globally.
- [00:03:46.870]That
- [00:03:47.773]connection between our, our
- [00:03:49.950]Husker scholars is something
- [00:03:51.331]that we're really excited about.
- [00:03:53.239]And
- [00:03:54.460]we take a lot of joy
- [00:03:55.947]when folks
- [00:03:57.375]graduate
- [00:03:58.470]and maintain
- [00:03:59.630]connections and relationships
- [00:04:01.302]with faculty
- [00:04:02.573]and their,
- [00:04:03.120]and their classmates.
- [00:04:04.807]Because at the end of the day, it,
- [00:04:06.220]it really is about relationships.
- [00:04:08.573]One of the things that makes
- [00:04:10.420]our educational administration
- [00:04:12.418]students special is their passion.
- [00:04:15.190]They,
- [00:04:16.090]they recognize
- [00:04:17.503]the challenges and opportunities
- [00:04:19.125]that we have in
- [00:04:20.186]P 12 school leadership,
- [00:04:21.515]and in higher education
- [00:04:23.247]leadership,
- [00:04:24.670]in community college leadership.
- [00:04:27.220]And they're not seeking
- [00:04:29.134]just a degree
- [00:04:30.193]to hang on the wall.
- [00:04:31.307]They want to grow.
- [00:04:32.170]They want to be challenged.
- [00:04:33.790]They want to be supported
- [00:04:35.402]and they bring
- [00:04:36.822]terrific energy
- [00:04:38.410]to their work.
- [00:04:39.201]And I think that's,
- [00:04:41.024]I think that's one of the
- [00:04:42.163]things that attracts them
- [00:04:44.170]to our program and the team
- [00:04:45.726]of faculty that we have.
- [00:04:48.100]I think the university
- [00:04:49.074]works really hard
- [00:04:50.242]and the College of
- [00:04:50.874]Education and Human Sciences
- [00:04:52.501]works really hard
- [00:04:53.914]to ensure that our students
- [00:04:58.097]feel a part of a community
- [00:04:59.960]and they feel supported
- [00:05:01.144]and they experience
- [00:05:03.159]that support through
- [00:05:06.670]counseling resources,
- [00:05:08.304]financial aid counseling,
- [00:05:10.420]other resources
- [00:05:11.871]that are perhaps taken for granted
- [00:05:13.333]in an on-campus environment.
- [00:05:15.283]We work really hard to
- [00:05:17.800]ensure that those are available
- [00:05:19.216]to our online students as well.
