- [00:00:00.160]We're back it's halftime of
- [00:00:01.170]the Huskers homecoming match-up
- [00:00:02.580]tonight against Northwestern.
- [00:00:03.830]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:04.870]a chance to catch up with the
- [00:00:05.890]President of the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:07.690]Ted Carter, and my goodness, I thought
- [00:00:10.200]we had one in the bag last week, President.
- [00:00:12.090]I'm sure you were hanging on every
- [00:00:13.480]play at the end of that game.
- [00:00:14.870]Yeah, I was.
- [00:00:15.703]I even tweeted that we would prevail,
- [00:00:17.470]and keep the faith and, you know,
- [00:00:19.230]football's a, an unpredictable sport, momentum, emotion.
- [00:00:23.690]I'm sure all our Nebraska fans felt
- [00:00:26.020]like that was a big kick in the teeth,
- [00:00:27.440]but at the end of the day, they're our team.
- [00:00:30.380]I shared with you before, I mean,
- [00:00:31.530]I was a lifelong Red Sox fan.
- [00:00:32.930]I've lived through a lot of heartache and losses
- [00:00:34.987]and when you win, it's just going to feel so good.
- [00:00:37.500]And we've got all the elements there.
- [00:00:38.830]So I'm confident we're going to bounce back
- [00:00:41.450]and continue to play tough.
- [00:00:42.810]Very good.
- [00:00:43.643]Well, I know you've had an interesting week.
- [00:00:44.580]You had a ribbon cutting during the week
- [00:00:46.500]at UNL for a new biosecurity lab.
- [00:00:49.150]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:00:50.520]And when will the work of start beginning?
- [00:00:52.820]So yeah, we cut the ribbon on
- [00:00:55.180]a new partnership between our friends at
- [00:00:58.270]the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources at
- [00:01:00.590]our main campus at University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:03.269]And our nationally recognized think tank
- [00:01:06.370]the National Strategic Research Institute.
- [00:01:09.680]Those two organizations bring such a great blend of being
- [00:01:14.370]able to help us in national defense.
- [00:01:17.580]Things like cybersecurity, and now this,
- [00:01:19.990]this project here as a collaborative biosecurity laboratory,
- [00:01:25.890]we'll take a look at how we protect
- [00:01:27.600]our food supply, our water supply.
- [00:01:30.570]Really excited about what this potential is.
- [00:01:33.840]And it's set up to work over the next five years.
- [00:01:36.550]To use a football analogy,
- [00:01:38.490]this is us playing offense to not have to go on defense
- [00:01:43.250]for the protection of our food supply chain.
- [00:01:45.690]Very good.
- [00:01:46.840]From our previous conversations it sounds like
- [00:01:48.910]the university is leading a lot of areas in research,
- [00:01:52.640]doing the research that changes
- [00:01:53.940]lives across our entire country.
- [00:01:55.860]Can you tell us more about how the university
- [00:01:57.430]is helping make a difference?
- [00:01:59.300]So as we've done for now 152 years,
- [00:02:01.720]as one of the nation's original land grant universities,
- [00:02:04.680]we are very involved in not only education in agriculture,
- [00:02:09.640]but also in research and agriculture.
- [00:02:13.010]We've got a great global presence with our
- [00:02:15.720]Daugherty Water for Food Institute.
- [00:02:17.880]Our staff and faculty engage in water
- [00:02:19.960]and food security projects across the globe.
- [00:02:22.950]And you know,
- [00:02:23.783]this Daugherty Water for Food Institute
- [00:02:25.830]is really about how we grow more crop per drop
- [00:02:28.690]and how we make sure that we're
- [00:02:29.780]taking care of feeding the hungry for a growing world.
- [00:02:32.380]So there's a lot of work there.
- [00:02:33.940]You know, building on national security,
- [00:02:35.550]we are engaged in the very front lines.
- [00:02:37.450]The work we do for the Department of Defense.
- [00:02:39.910]We're leading not only natural, national security.
- [00:02:42.930]As I mentioned with our, our think tank,
- [00:02:44.930]the National Strategic Research Institute.
- [00:02:47.140]We're also experts in vaccine development,
- [00:02:49.330]detecting nuclear material,
- [00:02:50.750]and the psychology of terrorist
- [00:02:52.780]networks with our Insight Organization.
- [00:02:55.660]That's the National Counter-Terrorism Innovation Technology
- [00:02:58.650]and Education Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
- [00:03:02.160]So many, many defense related areas
- [00:03:04.390]in which we are leading the nation.
- [00:03:06.350]Very good.
- [00:03:07.183]Well I know that you've served,
- [00:03:08.570]protected our country as part of the Navy.
- [00:03:10.510]I've got to imagine that the national defense research being
- [00:03:13.440]done here comes pretty close to home for you.
- [00:03:16.220]Yeah, the great news is all
- [00:03:17.650]these elements here with our fantastic
- [00:03:19.590]university were here when I came here.
- [00:03:22.180]But being a retired flag officer in the Navy
- [00:03:24.500]where I had a very high level security clearance,
- [00:03:26.870]I'm able to still maintain that.
- [00:03:28.210]So I can be engaged with some of this work
- [00:03:30.560]that's being done through some of our institutes
- [00:03:32.830]and Nebraskans should feel very,
- [00:03:35.320]very good about how well we're working
- [00:03:38.150]to protect our nation, our national interest.
- [00:03:40.340]Always great to see ya.
- [00:03:41.173]Another night game next week, you up for that?
- [00:03:43.030]I'm ready.
- [00:03:43.890]Prime time, let's go.
- [00:03:45.190]Prime time.
- [00:03:46.170]There he is President Ted Carter with us here at halftime.
- [00:03:48.490]We've got more coming up next.
