- [00:00:00.000]We're back.
- [00:00:00.833]It's halftime of the Huskers matchup tonight
- [00:00:02.560]against the Michigan state Spartans.
- [00:00:04.220]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:06.072]a chance to catch up with the
- [00:00:06.905]President of the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:08.060]and that is President Ted Carter.
- [00:00:09.280]You were down in Norman last week
- [00:00:10.970]for the Oklahoma game,
- [00:00:11.890]the big celebration
- [00:00:12.880]of the 50th anniversary of the 1971 game.
- [00:00:16.500]What was your experience like?
- [00:00:18.410]Well, first of all,
- [00:00:19.243]it was great to be in Norman, Oklahoma.
- [00:00:21.760]I will first say that the Oklahoma fans
- [00:00:23.920]were terrific to all of us.
- [00:00:26.160]It was really special
- [00:00:27.180]to be with the 71 team from both sides,
- [00:00:29.780]the Oklahoma side, and the Nebraska side.
- [00:00:32.350]You know, I had not had a lot of time
- [00:00:34.330]to interact with the,
- [00:00:35.850]that generation of football players.
- [00:00:37.660]It just made me really proud to be,
- [00:00:40.320]you know, the University system President.
- [00:00:42.300]But to be associated with them,
- [00:00:44.230]and how proud they were.
- [00:00:45.390]And of course the game was certainly entertaining.
- [00:00:48.690]We're never going to be happy about a loss,
- [00:00:50.690]but I think all Nebraska fans
- [00:00:53.910]had some real positive takeaways from that game,
- [00:00:56.550]that there's something that you see
- [00:00:58.010]where it's starting to turn a corner.
- [00:00:59.180]Offense looked good, our defense,
- [00:01:01.100]I mean to hold Oklahoma University
- [00:01:03.500]to 23 points or less for the first time since 2016.
- [00:01:06.667]That's a remarkable performance,
- [00:01:08.610]and certainly gave us a chance to win.
- [00:01:10.010]So let's be optimistic
- [00:01:11.590]that we're going to build off that.
- [00:01:13.810]I'm going to tell you for me, from what I observed,
- [00:01:16.240]that was a turning point game for us.
- [00:01:17.770]And most Oklahoma fans felt pretty darn lucky
- [00:01:20.800]to get away with a win on that one.
- [00:01:22.410]Very good. Well, let's, we've, we've been hearing
- [00:01:24.440]that the University is gonna waive
- [00:01:26.590]undergraduate application fees for students.
- [00:01:29.100]Can you tell us more about that initiative,
- [00:01:31.530]and why you're doing it.
- [00:01:32.960]So we've done this before, but you know,
- [00:01:35.070]the basic idea is we want to do everything we can
- [00:01:37.810]to encourage, you know, young men and women
- [00:01:41.690]that are graduating high school this next year,
- [00:01:44.010]maybe even some transfer students,
- [00:01:45.790]to look at our university system.
- [00:01:47.370]There's something for everybody there.
- [00:01:48.810]The $45 that is being offered for free application,
- [00:01:52.260]waving of that application free, that's real money.
- [00:01:54.370]And that's open til October 3rd.
- [00:01:55.950]So there's still time for people to get into that.
- [00:01:58.230]But beyond that, there's more that we're doing.
- [00:02:00.900]You know, we still have Nebraska promise,
- [00:02:02.680]which is free tuition
- [00:02:04.210]for all Nebraskans who are earn $60,000 or less.
- [00:02:08.010]We've frozen tuition for two years,
- [00:02:11.210]and that's a really big deal.
- [00:02:12.740]We've reduced the online tuition rates
- [00:02:15.640]to the same price tag as in person.
- [00:02:17.330]And of course we've added to the grade point average
- [00:02:20.050]as a qualifying factor for admission.
- [00:02:22.020]So, you know, the bottom line is we are looking to create
- [00:02:24.900]as many opportunities as we can
- [00:02:26.640]to be affordable and accessible
- [00:02:28.590]as one of the best value post-secondary institutions,
- [00:02:32.330]not only in Nebraska, but in the nation.
- [00:02:34.811]A few weeks ago, we talked about
- [00:02:36.091]the enrollment numbers for the system.
- [00:02:38.010]What are you working on in those areas
- [00:02:39.860]to kind of keep moving that forward?
- [00:02:42.420]Well, beyond just enrollment at first,
- [00:02:44.270]I'm still very encouraged by first-generation students.
- [00:02:47.000]I mean, big increases there across the board.
- [00:02:49.040]We actually took in more Nebraskans at UNL
- [00:02:51.880]than we had the previous year.
- [00:02:55.090]And of course we have rise in graduate students,
- [00:02:59.550]as well as those that are in engineering and nursing fields,
- [00:03:02.480]those are really important.
- [00:03:04.350]But we do want to see that undergraduate enrollment
- [00:03:07.170]come back to us.
- [00:03:08.480]And some of that
- [00:03:09.313]will be focused on specific programs for Nebraskans,
- [00:03:12.170]as well as some of our out-of-state students.
- [00:03:14.060]As we mentioned previously,
- [00:03:15.470]our new Nebraskan Scholarship Program out at UNK,
- [00:03:18.930]created a significant increase in out-of-state students
- [00:03:22.130]for our friends out at Kearney.
- [00:03:23.870]First time, they've had a rise in enrollment
- [00:03:26.220]in about five years.
- [00:03:27.053]So other programs like the
- [00:03:28.720]Nebraska Career Scholarship program,
- [00:03:30.860]that's, you know, great collaboration
- [00:03:32.430]with the state and the Governor,
- [00:03:34.280]that gives us a chance to support students
- [00:03:36.300]that are going in those high demand areas of study.
- [00:03:40.040]So, and we want to make sure
- [00:03:41.510]that we're still making our programs attractive
- [00:03:43.430]for, you know, the farming community here.
- [00:03:45.410]I mean, it's harvest season,
- [00:03:46.570]and it's a big part of life here in Nebraska.
- [00:03:49.600]Our Ag tech programs certainly a focus on science literacy.
- [00:03:54.520]Those science skills are really important
- [00:03:56.090]to be able to go into that business.
- [00:03:58.227]So as I said,
- [00:03:59.378]there's something out there for everyone.
- [00:04:00.211]We want to make sure we continue to build on that
- [00:04:01.990]for our future.
- [00:04:02.870]Awful lot going on right now with the,
- [00:04:04.879]with the University, across the State.
- [00:04:06.340]And when it comes to University of Nebraska,
- [00:04:08.410]can you share some of the things with us
- [00:04:10.570]that you've been working on.
- [00:04:12.030]So we're working very closely
- [00:04:13.200]with the business community.
- [00:04:14.700]That's something that is a really important part
- [00:04:17.130]of this next year for us,
- [00:04:18.140]to create a better path to internships
- [00:04:21.390]for our students and paid internships.
- [00:04:23.890]You know, a lot of the Fortune 500 companies,
- [00:04:26.860]Union Pacific, Kiewit,
- [00:04:30.240]they do a great job with our internship programs.
- [00:04:32.410]But at some of the other companies,
- [00:04:33.980]and even the, the manufacturing companies
- [00:04:40.160]that are looking to still bring in interns
- [00:04:42.910]that we want to create that path,
- [00:04:45.260]and create a kind of a eharmony approach, if you will,
- [00:04:48.840]for these businesses to connect with our students.
- [00:04:51.200]So that's going to be a big focus for us.
- [00:04:53.350]We're also focusing on a lot
- [00:04:54.640]on our national defense programs.
- [00:04:56.840]The National Strategic Research Institute
- [00:04:58.820]is, is doing great with their relationship
- [00:05:01.150]with the U.S. Strategic Command,
- [00:05:02.690]as well as some other portions that are in Nebraska.
- [00:05:04.840]Defense Research Corporation
- [00:05:06.290]is going to be doing a lot of big work
- [00:05:07.740]to support U.S. Strategic Command,
- [00:05:09.750]and the Nuclear Command and Control Mission set.
- [00:05:12.320]So these are really important issues
- [00:05:13.890]for Nebraskans and Americans.
- [00:05:16.020]And we're all part of that
- [00:05:17.170]here at the University.
- [00:05:18.550]It's always good to see you.
- [00:05:19.963]I don't know about you,
- [00:05:20.796]but I'm ready to be back home
- [00:05:21.664]for some home games.
- [00:05:22.497]Yeah, me too. I'm looking forward
- [00:05:23.560]to homecoming against Northwestern,
- [00:05:25.420]an evening game, it's going to have a different feel.
- [00:05:27.710]And of course, how nice is it to feel like fall is here?
- [00:05:31.420]We're in the seventies right now,
- [00:05:32.710]maybe a little bit of the eighties next week.
- [00:05:34.410]It's great to see
- [00:05:35.270]those forties and fifties in the morning.
- [00:05:36.960]It feels like football weather.
- [00:05:38.290]Good to see you.
- [00:05:39.123]Good to see Greg.
- [00:05:39.956]President Ted Carter with us here at halftime.
- [00:05:41.530]We've got more, coming up next.
