- [00:00:18.110]Hello, everybody.
- [00:00:18.943]I'm Audrey Rider with SDSU Extension here in South Dakota.
- [00:00:22.830]And I am the early childhood field specialist for the state.
- [00:00:26.540]I am gonna show you how to make your own x-ray machine
- [00:00:29.850]so that you can create your own vet office
- [00:00:32.940]and take x-rays of your stuffed animals or animals
- [00:00:36.143]that you might want to be checking on in your vet clinic.
- [00:00:39.670]And so it's pretty easy.
- [00:00:41.390]I'm gonna show you the items
- [00:00:43.220]that I have here in front of me.
- [00:00:45.570]You start out with a basic box.
- [00:00:47.280]It can be any size box.
- [00:00:50.060]I just have a smaller one here that I have gotten.
- [00:00:53.070]And then you'll need a flashlight, as you can see.
- [00:00:57.310]And then this is the x-ray and I have a dog here
- [00:01:01.330]but you'll need a page protector.
- [00:01:04.130]And then I used actually lamination paper
- [00:01:07.290]and printed off a skeleton of a dog
- [00:01:10.500]and then used a permanent marker to put that
- [00:01:13.070]onto the laminating paper
- [00:01:15.020]and put it into the page protector.
- [00:01:16.610]As you can see, the flashlight goes through
- [00:01:21.110]and it does the skeleton of the dog.
- [00:01:24.290]And then I use just black construction paper
- [00:01:27.170]to start covering the box.
- [00:01:29.020]You can put your dog in here
- [00:01:32.740]and then the kids can see what the dog looks like
- [00:01:37.894]through the x-ray machine.
- [00:01:40.590]And so, like I said, it's pretty easy.
- [00:01:43.100]To start out with, you cut a hole
- [00:01:46.750]the size of your flashlight.
- [00:01:48.630]And my flashlight got a rubber end around the end of it
- [00:01:53.590]and I'll show you here.
- [00:01:54.570]Oops, it kind of fell apart here.
- [00:01:58.030]And so my flashlight is like this.
- [00:01:59.890]It's got a heavy-duty rubber end.
- [00:02:02.830]And so I didn't use any tape to hold it in
- [00:02:05.280]'cause I cut my hole just perfect enough
- [00:02:07.560]so it could squeeze in there
- [00:02:11.150]but if you need to, you can take duct tape.
- [00:02:14.930]I did bring along a clear tape or hot glue.
- [00:02:19.910]And once you cut that hole
- [00:02:21.670]out of the side of your box like this,
- [00:02:24.400]you can glue it or tape it in
- [00:02:28.940]so that the flashlight does not move.
- [00:02:32.390]Like I said, mine has the rubber end on the bottom.
- [00:02:34.500]So it actually fits in there very nice and tight
- [00:02:38.150]so that I can shut it on and off.
- [00:02:40.050]So then, like I said, you can use black construction paper
- [00:02:43.910]or black paint if you want to paint it
- [00:02:48.020]so it is so with all this one color or that it's kinda black
- [00:02:52.060]like the x-ray machines are or silver,
- [00:02:56.090]whatever that may be.
- [00:02:58.582]And I just have black construction paper here.
- [00:03:00.500]So I will just do one quick on the other side
- [00:03:03.460]so you can see a completed x-ray machine.
- [00:03:08.390]This is fun for kids to understand
- [00:03:11.570]and learn like the skeletal system of an animal
- [00:03:15.030]and what they do in a vet office
- [00:03:17.960]since especially we're learning about the vet's office
- [00:03:21.250]and that they take x-rays of the animals.
- [00:03:23.700]And so then I'm just gonna put this black sheet down here.
- [00:03:36.715]Okay, so then you can see,
- [00:03:38.090]I've got both of my sides covered.
- [00:03:40.330]That way, if you've got writing in the boxes or something,
- [00:03:42.160]you can cover it up.
- [00:03:44.610]And then to put this on, like I said,
- [00:03:46.720]I used a page protector, as you can see here,
- [00:03:50.610]just a basic any sort of size page protector
- [00:03:53.630]that you would use in a binder or anything like that.
- [00:03:56.280]I use clear duct tape to put it on.
- [00:03:59.880]Just put it on the end basically.
- [00:04:01.870]Before you do that, you do cut out a hole
- [00:04:06.480]that is not as big as the page protector.
- [00:04:12.550]This is actually what I used here
- [00:04:14.380]is I just used this and cut it out and then kept this
- [00:04:19.580]so I could show you what it looks like
- [00:04:20.557]but it's not quite as big as the page projector
- [00:04:22.480]'cause you wanna leave that little whole area in there,
- [00:04:25.940]as you can see.
- [00:04:27.220]And then, like I said, I did use laminating sheets.
- [00:04:33.470]And so what I did is I just took the laminating sheets,
- [00:04:36.980]tore it apart.
- [00:04:38.110]And so there's actually two of them because obviously,
- [00:04:41.050]you put whatever you're gonna laminate in the middle,
- [00:04:44.460]but then I printed off just a dog
- [00:04:46.510]because I have a stuffed animal dog.
- [00:04:48.360]I printed off a dog from the Google pictures of a skeleton
- [00:04:52.530]that you can see.
- [00:04:53.620]And what I did is I just went and traced
- [00:04:57.620]onto the laminating sheets.
- [00:05:00.430]All of these bones, as you can tell.
- [00:05:03.458]I'll turn my light on so you can see it.
- [00:05:06.970]All the bones that you can see in the dog,
- [00:05:09.530]I traced using a Sharpie marker onto the laminating paper.
- [00:05:19.730]And so that way, you can see the dog.
- [00:05:23.850]As you can tell here, you can see the outline of the bones
- [00:05:26.770]and the dog and you can print off many different pictures.
- [00:05:31.620]You can also just put this picture in there
- [00:05:33.790]if you don't have time to trace it.
- [00:05:35.740]And that way, they can see what those look like.
- [00:05:38.820]And you can do different types of animals.
- [00:05:40.560]Maybe they have a stuffed bear.
- [00:05:42.490]You can probably find a bear skeleton
- [00:05:45.460]that you could use as well.
- [00:05:47.330]Like I said, I have my stuffed dog in here.
- [00:05:50.470]So I put the dog in here.
- [00:05:52.370]And what's really fun is you can put the dog in here.
- [00:05:54.520]Just try not to block all of the light of it
- [00:05:58.450]but I just put my dog in the side.
- [00:06:01.610]And then what you can do
- [00:06:03.270]so it's easier to see the skeleton
- [00:06:05.790]is just carefully close up your box like this
- [00:06:09.360]and hold it and say, now we're gonna see.
- [00:06:15.080]Now we're gonna see the skeleton of your dog.
- [00:06:17.430]And you're gonna see the skeleton of the dog in there
- [00:06:20.480]as it's sitting in there in your homemade x-ray machine.
- [00:06:24.640]So it's pretty fun, pretty easy.
- [00:06:27.690]I would suggest that you use an X-Acto knife or a knife
- [00:06:33.780]and cut these out ahead of time for the kids.
- [00:06:36.220]And then they can put 'em together using a flashlight
- [00:06:40.198]and using the page protector
- [00:06:42.250]and the pictures or tracing that you have.
- [00:06:45.790]So this is more probably one with adult help
- [00:06:48.800]but if you have stuff cut out ahead of time,
- [00:06:50.310]they can paint the box how they want it,
- [00:06:52.033]they can cover it and then they can utilize it
- [00:06:55.730]to pretend play and make their own x-ray machine
- [00:06:58.490]for their vet's office.
- [00:06:59.560]So again, hope you enjoy it.
- [00:07:02.580]And if you need further instructions,
- [00:07:06.350]I will send those along as well too.
- [00:07:09.060]So thank you.
- [00:07:10.130]Have a wonderful day.
