- [00:00:04.630]The Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory
- [00:00:06.560]is located in the heart of Nebraska Sandhills
- [00:00:09.420]in Grant Hooker and Cherry Counties.
- [00:00:12.210]In 1978, Pete and Abby Gudmundsen
- [00:00:15.220]gave the former Rafter C Ranch to
- [00:00:17.440]the University of Nebraska Foundation.
- [00:00:20.470]The University of Nebraska Lincoln leased the Gudmundsen
- [00:00:22.517]Sandhills laboratory from the foundation in 1981,
- [00:00:27.820]the laboratory consists of 12,800 acres with
- [00:00:31.040]about 1200 acres of that in sub-irrigated Meadows.
- [00:00:35.510]The upland Sandhills range is covered
- [00:00:38.210]with a diverse number of
- [00:00:39.450]native plant species.
- [00:00:41.680]GSL receives about 18 inches of precipitation
- [00:00:44.940]annually,
- [00:00:46.140]and the Upland Range produces about 1800 pounds per acre.
- [00:00:51.040]The sub-irrigated Meadows,
- [00:00:52.740]which are used for both grazing and hay
- [00:00:55.370]produce about 4,000
- [00:00:56.690]to 4,500 pounds per acre annually.
- [00:01:00.010]The forage resources of the facility support about
- [00:01:03.040]800 head of cattle
- [00:01:05.370]currently, about one half the cow herd
- [00:01:07.440]calves in March
- [00:01:08.500]and the other half in May,
- [00:01:10.900]all cattle are primarily part of the
- [00:01:13.140]Husker Red composite genetics.
- [00:01:16.220]Since the inception of GSL
- [00:01:18.362]research and educational programs
- [00:01:20.720]have become more ecologically diverse,
- [00:01:22.950]and team-oriented.
- [00:01:24.740]Joint projects with animal range, soil,
- [00:01:27.301]veterinary, economics, entomology,
- [00:01:29.919]geology, hydrology,
- [00:01:32.360]forestry,
- [00:01:33.330]and wildlife
- [00:01:34.420]have increased our understanding of the
- [00:01:36.810]Sandhills ecosystem.
- [00:01:39.050]This has resulted in advances in range, livestock,
- [00:01:41.854]nutrition,
- [00:01:42.891]beef calorie production,
- [00:01:44.850]grazing systems, range land ecology,
- [00:01:48.030]low cost cattle management,
- [00:01:49.603]groundwater issues, and wildlife management.
- [00:01:53.770]Some notable research impacts
- [00:01:56.020]from work completed at GSL
- [00:01:58.490]include development of extended grazing systems
- [00:02:01.037]for improved economic returns
- [00:02:04.140]from Sandhills Calcap operations,
- [00:02:07.480]identification of positive or negative outcomes
- [00:02:10.430]from use of different calving seasons,
- [00:02:13.490]heffer development,
- [00:02:14.490]and fetal programming,
- [00:02:16.690]the proper timing and type of supplementation,
- [00:02:19.722]use of distillers grains for
- [00:02:21.886]gestating cows and yearlings
- [00:02:24.800]management of sub-irrigated metals,
- [00:02:27.250]and the importance of
- [00:02:28.350]time of grazing in Upland Range.
- [00:02:31.190]Impact from extension programming at GSL
- [00:02:34.270]has also been significant.
- [00:02:36.191]The Nebraska ranch practicum is a three seasons hands-on
- [00:02:40.190]program that has given over 600 participants,
- [00:02:43.510]valuable knowledge and skills
- [00:02:45.810]needed in today's complex ranching industry.
- [00:02:49.530]The annual GSL open house
- [00:02:51.540]attracts 200 to 250 participants
- [00:02:53.820]and is an opportunity to
- [00:02:56.470]hear about the latest research findings
- [00:02:59.120]and other important beef industry issues.
- [00:03:02.860]The Gudmunsen Sandhills Lab has always been
- [00:03:05.620]and will remain focused
- [00:03:07.330]on answering producer questions.
- [00:03:10.140]with the new advances in technology,
- [00:03:13.130]GSL faculty and staff are studying
- [00:03:15.850]the use of new technologies
- [00:03:17.950]and how these can help producers.
- [00:03:20.840]Understanding the cost-to-benefit ratio
- [00:03:23.550]of using these new technologies is an
- [00:03:26.640]important aspect that can be captured at the laboratory.
