- [00:00:05.110]Since 1904,
- [00:00:06.310]the University of Nebraska West Central Research Education
- [00:00:09.394]and Extension Center at North Plot has addressed problems
- [00:00:13.730]and concerns specific to west central Nebraska.
- [00:00:18.280]Historically the center was initially established with an
- [00:00:20.900]emphasis on dry land farming and forestry,
- [00:00:23.522]but quickly took on the challenges of livestock production
- [00:00:27.360]and irrigation.
- [00:00:29.210]The land resource at WCREEC consists of 1,842 acres
- [00:00:35.330]with about 1200 acres of that in native range land,
- [00:00:39.229]200 acres irrigated crop land,
- [00:00:42.250]and 224 acres dry land crop land;
- [00:00:45.600]which are used for small plot work and field demonstrations.
- [00:00:50.540]The WP Snyder Building is the primary office
- [00:00:53.520]and classroom facility for WCREEC.
- [00:00:57.920]Other buildings include: residents for several employees
- [00:01:01.020]and graduate students,
- [00:01:02.760]key research facilities include a 600 head capacity feedlot
- [00:01:07.030]with GrowSafe system pans,
- [00:01:09.430]the Pesticide Application Technology Lab,
- [00:01:12.690]the Agro Ecosystems Entomology Lab,
- [00:01:15.530]multiple greenhouses,
- [00:01:17.080]and ample small plot research areas that have center pivot,
- [00:01:21.250]lateral move, and subsurface drip irrigation systems.
- [00:01:25.290]Faculty at the center currently work
- [00:01:27.740]in multiple disciplines,
- [00:01:28.970]including: Agriculture Economics, Beef Nutrition,
- [00:01:32.170]Beef Reproduction, Entomology, Field Crops,
- [00:01:35.137]Irrigation and Water Resources, Range and Forage Management,
- [00:01:39.610]Soil Science, and Weed Science and Application Technology.
- [00:01:43.760]All faculty have both a research and extension appointment.
- [00:01:48.080]WCREEC also provides administrative management for three
- [00:01:52.090]important research and extension facilities that are heavily
- [00:01:55.610]used by numerous faculty.
- [00:01:57.620]These include the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory,
- [00:02:00.380]a 12,800 acre research ranch located near Whitman, Nebraska;
- [00:02:05.380]that was gifted in 1978.
- [00:02:08.140]The Water Resources Laboratory near Brule, Nebraska was
- [00:02:11.580]purchased to support research and extension and cropping
- [00:02:14.650]systems with limited water in 2010.
- [00:02:18.600]In 2012, the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center
- [00:02:22.670]near Grant, was gifted to the university to study wheat
- [00:02:26.490]and cropping rotations with wheat on 640 acres.
- [00:02:31.010]Growing more food and feed
- [00:02:32.500]with greater efficiency of irrigation water,
- [00:02:35.180]and management of rain fed cropping systems continues
- [00:02:38.530]to be the theme for agriculture in the region.
- [00:02:41.760]In both irrigated and non-irrigated cropping systems,
- [00:02:44.750]controlling pests that impact water use and reduce crop
- [00:02:48.040]yields such as weeds, insects,
- [00:02:50.170]and plant pathogens are important to research
- [00:02:53.240]in extension programming,
- [00:02:54.810]particularly those that have evolved resistance to specific
- [00:02:58.018]pesticides.
- [00:02:59.750]The Crops and Water Research Team continues to look at the
- [00:03:02.960]integration of crop and livestock systems, and irrigation
- [00:03:06.670]management strategies to maintain economic vitality
- [00:03:10.760]for Nebraska.
- [00:03:12.110]The Beef Systems faculty in collaboration with Range
- [00:03:14.930]and Forge faculty
- [00:03:16.110]focus on providing research based information,
- [00:03:18.680]experiential learning opportunities, decision support tools,
- [00:03:23.400]and individual consultation to clientele
- [00:03:26.380]with the objective of improving the competitiveness,
- [00:03:29.290]sustainability, and profitability of Nebraska's beef
- [00:03:33.160]producers and the allied industries with a focus on
- [00:03:36.940]responsible use of our resources.
