- [00:00:18.730]Hey everybody.
- [00:00:19.563]I'm Audrey Rider with SDSU Extension here in South Dakota.
- [00:00:23.860]I am the early childhood field specialist
- [00:00:26.030]and I'm gonna show you some fun activities we can do.
- [00:00:29.860]The fun activity we're gonna do today is
- [00:00:31.870]creating a police car out of a water bottle.
- [00:00:35.150]So this is a fun activity you can do
- [00:00:36.760]at home or in your centers.
- [00:00:39.380]So the things you'll need is an empty water bottle,
- [00:00:42.220]which I have in here,
- [00:00:43.120]and also just a water bottle I'm drinking.
- [00:00:46.740]Construction paper (paper rustles).
- [00:00:48.260]You'll need these basic colors of blue.
- [00:00:52.370]If you don't have white (paper rustles),
- [00:00:53.440]like a cream (paper rustles), I have the cream.
- [00:00:55.510]Yellow, red (paper rustles), and a black.
- [00:00:59.560]So, you'll need those basic colors.
- [00:01:01.530]Just a sheet of regular construction paper will work.
- [00:01:04.982]Pencil, glue or glue sticks work great.
- [00:01:08.630]I'm using glue sticks.
- [00:01:10.230]And a scissors for (scissors clatter),
- [00:01:12.250]and they can be kid size scissors
- [00:01:13.730]if you're working on having the kids cut these out.
- [00:01:16.010]And then an Exacto knife or a utility knife.
- [00:01:19.720]And these only let adults use.
- [00:01:21.600]And I would suggest probably having them,
- [00:01:23.678]have the adults cut out the seat and we'll show you that
- [00:01:26.450]in a second, so (knife clatters).
- [00:01:28.920]So, what do you do is you start
- [00:01:30.010]out with your empty water bottle, which I have here.
- [00:01:32.466]You will trace a circle on the bottom,
- [00:01:36.380]which will be your front part of your car.
- [00:01:39.560]And so you'll go ahead and you'll trace
- [00:01:40.980]that circle onto your blue construction paper.
- [00:01:43.896](paper rustles)
- [00:01:46.280]And I would say do it in the corner
- [00:01:48.490]of your construction paper, 'cause it's easier to trace.
- [00:01:53.110](pencil drags)
- [00:01:54.540]And then you can use the rest of the paper
- [00:01:56.450]for the outside of your bottle.
- [00:02:00.528](pencil drags)
- [00:02:02.390]Okay?
- [00:02:03.223]So then you have your circle traced and
- [00:02:06.310]for time's sake, I'm not gonna cut that out.
- [00:02:07.780]But you would cut that out and then you take
- [00:02:10.100]and you go ahead and glue that to the bottom (finger taps)
- [00:02:13.340]of one of the ends, not the one (finger taps)
- [00:02:15.200]with the cap on it, but the just the basic end.
- [00:02:18.830]Put glue all over the bottom
- [00:02:20.180]with your glue stick or your glue.
- [00:02:21.840]And just stick that on the bottom.
- [00:02:23.170]That'll be the front part of your car.
- [00:02:25.320]Then for the rest of the (paper rustles)
- [00:02:29.840]blue paper to wrap it around.
- [00:02:32.170]This actually is about the whole sheet
- [00:02:34.180]of construction paper.
- [00:02:35.620]And so what you do is you just take,
- [00:02:37.720]and take the length of your bottle and kind of make a mark.
- [00:02:41.230]So it gives you the correct length.
- [00:02:44.304](pencil clatters)
- [00:02:45.140]And make your mark and then cut that off.
- [00:02:47.720](paper rustles)
- [00:02:49.178](scissors sliding)
- [00:02:50.011]So for instance, it was right about there.
- [00:02:51.215](scissors cutting)
- [00:02:52.090]I'm just gonna cut it off quick,
- [00:02:52.930]so you can see what I'm doing.
- [00:02:55.234](quiet upbeat music)
- [00:02:56.067](paper rustling) (scissors clattering)
- [00:02:58.640]And then, you will take and just wrap it
- [00:03:01.310]around your water bottle and then whatever over,
- [00:03:04.920]when it overlaps, go ahead and glue that.
- [00:03:07.130]And I also glue the bottom side
- [00:03:08.760]just to kind of keep it all together.
- [00:03:11.350]Okay?
- [00:03:15.600]Lost the wheel.
- [00:03:17.429]There we go.
- [00:03:18.767]All right.
- [00:03:20.162](quiet upbeat music)
- [00:03:24.690]So once you have your bottom end glued
- [00:03:28.230]with the circle, the blue circle,
- [00:03:30.360]and then you also have your blue paper glued on
- [00:03:33.270]to make the outside body part of your police car.
- [00:03:36.190]Then what you'll do is have the kids cut strips of the white
- [00:03:42.400]or cream, like mine is the cream, and yellow strips
- [00:03:46.840]that will be going down the race,
- [00:03:48.540]or the police car like this.
- [00:03:51.290]And they can cut those strips from the construction paper
- [00:03:54.300]and then they can also cut out the wheels.
- [00:03:57.890]And the wheels are just circles.
- [00:03:59.580]They can be any, I just made 'em any size, a smaller size.
- [00:04:02.900]I just drew a circle and then used that as my stencil,
- [00:04:07.430]and drew three more,
- [00:04:08.790]and made 'em all the same size that we'll glue on.
- [00:04:11.810]So they can be making those as you take the Exacto knife
- [00:04:16.183]or your utility knife (plastic bending), whichever you have,
- [00:04:20.410]and you will take and cut out a hole.
- [00:04:23.580]Basically what I did is I just did three sides.
- [00:04:27.050]I started here (knife cutting),
- [00:04:28.450]cut through the water bottle,
- [00:04:32.753]and cut over here and on this side,
- [00:04:35.320]so I could cut through the water bottle.
- [00:04:36.850]Do not cut the fourth side.
- [00:04:38.965](knife clatters) Otherwise we won't have a seat.
- [00:04:40.600]And then when I got cut through,
- [00:04:42.290]this pops up for the seat and the plastic part pops down
- [00:04:47.000]inside and that way you've got a seat.
- [00:04:50.010]You could add like a LEGO person or something
- [00:04:52.320]if they fit in there.
- [00:04:53.750]But it is kind of neat just to have that seat in your car.
- [00:04:57.240]Okay?
- [00:04:58.073]So I would suggest having an adult use the knife
- [00:05:00.156](knife clatters) and doing that part to cut it.
- [00:05:02.270]But once you have that done and they have the strips done,
- [00:05:05.090]they can make the strips wide,
- [00:05:07.130]whatever way they wanna make 'em.
- [00:05:10.080]And like I said, the wheels don't have to be perfect.
- [00:05:12.240]They can be big wheels, small wheels,
- [00:05:14.133]let them kind of create what they wanna do.
- [00:05:17.300]And so I'm gonna decorate the other side just to show you.
- [00:05:20.640]Like, I already put the wheels and that stuff
- [00:05:22.700]on this side.
- [00:05:24.300]I'm gonna go ahead and do these.
- [00:05:25.470]Basically, it's just putting them on
- [00:05:27.665]kind of about where you think the wheels should be
- [00:05:29.660]using some glue,
- [00:05:33.316](glue thumps)
- [00:05:34.149]and putting those on.
- [00:05:36.820]And you might have to kind of look
- [00:05:38.880]make sure it kind of looks like it'll work.
- [00:05:45.607]There we go.
- [00:05:47.057]Okay.
- [00:05:48.074](light upbeat music)
- [00:05:49.905](paper rustling)
- [00:05:56.767]And put the other wheel.
- [00:06:00.295]Here.
- [00:06:02.917](glue swooshing)
- [00:06:05.097](glue stick clatters)
- [00:06:06.657](paper rustling)
- [00:06:08.017]And glue or glue sticks work well.
- [00:06:12.342]Whatever you might have in your center, at home,
- [00:06:16.450]whatever works best for the kids.
- [00:06:18.170]Okay, so we got my, our wheels on, so there's our wheels.
- [00:06:22.570]And now we can put the other strip
- [00:06:25.920]up here to kind of look like the racing stripes
- [00:06:31.070]or the stripes on like a vehicle,
- [00:06:35.630]like a sheriff's vehicle or a police vehicle.
- [00:06:41.207](glue stick clatters)
- [00:06:42.673](light upbeat music)
- [00:06:49.490]And again, they can create these
- [00:06:52.350]however they wanna create 'em.
- [00:06:54.500]I'm gonna put a yellow one on 'cause usually
- [00:06:56.040]there's a yellow strip in those cop cars.
- [00:07:00.282](glue stick clatters)
- [00:07:02.220]I put the yellow one more in between my tires.
- [00:07:04.789](paper rustling)
- [00:07:08.550]Okay?
- [00:07:09.690]So I have the wheels and my striping on there.
- [00:07:15.208]And we have our seat.
- [00:07:17.240]On the back I've put a red kind of a headlight.
- [00:07:24.220]You can put one or you can like take a little strip
- [00:07:28.580]of red (scissors slide) and do two small little lights.
- [00:07:31.610]It's however you wanna do it. (scissors clatter)
- [00:07:33.490]You could put two in the back.
- [00:07:34.590]I put one light, but it's however,
- [00:07:36.840]kind of the siren light is what it's going to be.
- [00:07:40.690]Or the siren lights, or the lights on the top,
- [00:07:42.690]the flashing lights is kind of what you're going
- [00:07:45.050]for with that part.
- [00:07:45.910]So I put it on the top like that, towards the back.
- [00:07:50.010]Also you can put a star on the front.
- [00:07:52.960]'Cause usually they have a star for a sheriff
- [00:07:54.680]or anything like that.
- [00:07:56.040]I just drew out a star, cut it out.
- [00:07:59.237]Not a perfect star 'cause I don't draw stars real great.
- [00:08:02.870]But we're gonna glue that on the front.
- [00:08:07.389](glue stick clatters)
- [00:08:10.722](paper clicking)
- [00:08:12.855]Okay?
- [00:08:13.688]So there's your star in the front of your car.
- [00:08:17.580]And then you also can make a bumper using black paper.
- [00:08:22.310]Just kind of measure out your front part
- [00:08:26.210]of the bottle.
- [00:08:27.170]So you get kind of a similar about
- [00:08:31.118]for a close length.
- [00:08:33.576](glue stick clatters) And then go ahead
- [00:08:34.409]and glue the bumper on,
- [00:08:36.900]the front part, like that.
- [00:08:42.640](XX sniffs) And then you can also do lights on the front.
- [00:08:45.200]So I have little tiny, very hard to see in this video,
- [00:08:48.390]but little yellow headlights that I cut out.
- [00:08:53.220]Just out of the yellow construction paper.
- [00:08:54.683](glue stick tapping)
- [00:08:55.516]Again, they can be,
- [00:09:00.920]they can be round (glue stick clatters).
- [00:09:01.820]They can be whatever size.
- [00:09:06.099](glue stick lid clacks) There we go.
- [00:09:10.830]So there's my headlights.
- [00:09:13.440]And there's my bumper.
- [00:09:15.300]And if I notice, okay (scissors clatter)
- [00:09:16.300]this is a little long,
- [00:09:17.280]I can trim it down a little bit.
- [00:09:20.986](scissors snipping)
- [00:09:24.307](scissors clattering)
- [00:09:26.170]So pull my seat up, 'cause this is the seat.
- [00:09:31.530]That can kind of bend over a little bit.
- [00:09:33.979](upbeat music)
- [00:09:35.099]There we go.
- [00:09:36.159]All right.
- [00:09:37.000]So, we have my police car that is made.
- [00:09:43.800]And it is pretty simple to make.
- [00:09:46.390]Again, we just need the basic, kind of the basic colors
- [00:09:49.110]of construction paper, your blue (paper rustles)
- [00:09:51.409]red, black, yellow, (paper rustles)
- [00:09:55.510]and like a cream or white
- [00:09:56.930]or whatever color you might have on hand.
- [00:09:58.396](paper rustles)
- [00:09:59.229]A pencil (pencil clatters),
- [00:10:00.820]the glue, glue or glue sticks (glue thumps),
- [00:10:03.460]an empty water bottle,
- [00:10:05.800]scissors and they can be kid size
- [00:10:07.390]or adult (scissors clatter),
- [00:10:08.420]and then parents or teachers have kind of an Exacto knife
- [00:10:13.940]or a utility knife to kind of cut open that water bottle
- [00:10:17.530]in the seat in there.
- [00:10:19.390]And then if you do have like,
- [00:10:20.990]I don't have a LEGO friend or anything,
- [00:10:22.820]or a LEGO person right now,
- [00:10:24.410]but you could try putting that person in there.
- [00:10:26.230]Or even a small, small little doll
- [00:10:28.440]from any sort of building thing could go in there
- [00:10:31.440]for a police officer as well.
- [00:10:34.140]But these are fun to pretend to race,
- [00:10:36.650]to pretend to do sirens.
- [00:10:39.580]They can make up their own sirens and (imitates siren)
- [00:10:42.290]and drive the car around as they play with it.
- [00:10:44.940]So, have fun making these
- [00:10:47.730]and thank you for watching this video.
- [00:10:49.603](upbeat bright music)
- [00:10:56.814](music ends with a piano flourish)
