- [00:00:17.974]Hi, my name is Audrey Rider
- [00:00:19.470]and I am with SDSU extension in South Dakota.
- [00:00:23.030]I am the early childhood field specialist.
- [00:00:24.980]And today I'm gonna show you
- [00:00:26.360]how to make your own stethoscope.
- [00:00:28.910]How many of you know what a stethoscope is?
- [00:00:33.150]A stethoscope is what the doctor uses
- [00:00:36.720]to check your heart and to check your heartbeat.
- [00:00:39.440]Today we're gonna make our own using a funnel.
- [00:00:44.110]I used a paper towel roll and cut it in half.
- [00:00:47.190]But you can use a paper towel roll
- [00:00:49.010]or a toilet paper tube.
- [00:00:51.860]And masking tape is all you need.
- [00:00:55.550]What you're gonna do is you're gonna put
- [00:00:57.760]the funnel down, this is a big funnel.
- [00:00:59.870]I also will have an example to show you
- [00:01:02.100]that has a smaller funnel that works a lot easier
- [00:01:04.190]to hold over your heart.
- [00:01:06.490]But any size funnel will work, whatever you have.
- [00:01:09.340]And then go ahead and put the paper towel
- [00:01:11.710]or toilet paper tube around
- [00:01:14.830]the funnel
- [00:01:16.690]and then take masking tape and the big thing is this,
- [00:01:19.850]you have to seal off the air on the bottom.
- [00:01:23.200]So you need to make sure and get it nice and tight.
- [00:01:25.380]So as many times around to seal off that air
- [00:01:29.450]coming through so you can hear the heartbeat, is good.
- [00:01:33.139](cheerful music)
- [00:01:48.350]So, you just keep going around,
- [00:01:50.640]get it nice and sealed tight.
- [00:01:52.777](cheerful music)
- [00:01:56.420]How many of you remember
- [00:01:57.812]your doctors using this to check your heartbeat?
- [00:02:02.470]Have they ever let you use this?
- [00:02:05.118](cheerful music)
- [00:02:09.460]We're gonna go around a little bit more
- [00:02:11.280]just to make sure that's sealed up nice and tight.
- [00:02:14.202](cheerful music)
- [00:02:18.750]You shouldn't be able to see any air,
- [00:02:20.760]any light coming through that,
- [00:02:22.200]when you go around it in the inside,
- [00:02:26.608]cause that way it'll seal up nice and tight,
- [00:02:29.840]and you should be able to hear the thumping
- [00:02:31.390]of the heartbeat.
- [00:02:33.830]And when you think you got it nice and tight,
- [00:02:35.500]go ahead and just push that on there.
- [00:02:39.900]It all sealed up.
- [00:02:42.030]And then I have a couple helpers
- [00:02:43.700]that are gonna come show me theirs.
- [00:02:47.140]These are my kids.
- [00:02:49.660]This is the one that we made
- [00:02:50.870]that has a smaller funnel on it.
- [00:02:54.420]And it's all sealed up and all really tight.
- [00:02:56.750]They're going to, they're going to go ahead
- [00:03:00.480]and show you how it works.
- [00:03:02.967](cheerful music)
- [00:03:16.690]How many heartbeats did you get Ada?
- [00:03:18.957]15.
- [00:03:20.130]Okay, so you take 15 times 4
- [00:03:23.820]and that is the resting heartbeat of Annie for today.
- [00:03:28.340]So that's how you use it.
- [00:03:30.010]You have to put it up nice and tight
- [00:03:32.100]to their heart so you can hear the heartbeat.
- [00:03:35.750]Enjoy you're Stethoscope.
- [00:03:37.100]Thanks.
- [00:03:38.210](cheerful music)
