- [00:00:18.160]Hello and welcome.
- [00:00:19.280]My name is Audrey Rider,
- [00:00:20.750]and I work for SDSU Extension in South Dakota,
- [00:00:24.630]and I am an early childhood field specialist.
- [00:00:27.260]And I'm gonna show you how to make
- [00:00:29.360]some gardening craft markers so that you know
- [00:00:32.310]what you're growing in your garden
- [00:00:33.570]for this gardening craft project.
- [00:00:36.290]So, the things you'll need for a garden marker,
- [00:00:38.510]which I have one made here, this is the tomato one,
- [00:00:41.488]is the Popsicle sticks.
- [00:00:45.370]I have the kind of the wider ones,
- [00:00:47.490]but you can use different sizes.
- [00:00:49.200]The wider ones do stay up better in a garden,
- [00:00:51.650]and to go into the dirt.
- [00:00:53.547]You need glue sticks and a hot glue gun.
- [00:00:56.650]And these you'll probably have to help the kids with.
- [00:00:59.130]So just be careful with those.
- [00:01:00.970]A pair of scissors to cut your felt,
- [00:01:03.350]and then different colored pieces of felt.
- [00:01:06.990]And I just got a lot of these at the dollar store,
- [00:01:10.830]so that you can make different types
- [00:01:12.690]of fruits and vegetables depending on
- [00:01:13.960]what you're planning on growing.
- [00:01:16.040]So like I said, I did make this tomato.
- [00:01:18.620]And what I did is I just cut out the red circle,
- [00:01:21.490]I made a little stem on top.
- [00:01:23.160]Kids can be creative and do whatever they want.
- [00:01:25.960]And then you take and you use hot glue for all that
- [00:01:29.080]so it sticks together better.
- [00:01:31.100]I found that the Elmer's glue
- [00:01:32.530]doesn't hold them together well enough,
- [00:01:34.470]especially if you're gonna use these outside.
- [00:01:36.650]And then hot glue it on the back of the Popsicle stick.
- [00:01:39.700]And that way you can use these for markers.
- [00:01:42.110]These are nice markers to use, especially if you're
- [00:01:44.350]starting your gardening inside in maybe Solo cups,
- [00:01:49.600]or in pots, and you're using all of, basically the seeds,
- [00:01:54.470]this will help you to know what's growing
- [00:01:56.510]in your pot or your cup.
- [00:01:58.170]And so you can easily stick your garden marker inside,
- [00:02:00.808]and know that your tomatoes should be coming up
- [00:02:02.490]by this spring and you can transplant it outside.
- [00:02:05.650]These can also be used outside.
- [00:02:07.440]I've seen them used in the garden when they first start up,
- [00:02:09.790]when you're planting in your garden,
- [00:02:12.150]so you know exactly where your different things
- [00:02:13.760]are planted at.
- [00:02:16.530]I also made up here, and I'm gonna glue it together here,
- [00:02:19.288]but, it's hard to see, but it's a little pea.
- [00:02:22.180]So I made the pea and then I have
- [00:02:24.580]the little circle peas inside.
- [00:02:26.310]So I'm gonna glue those on right now,
- [00:02:29.550]to kind of show you those.
- [00:02:37.677]And like I said, with the hot glue gun
- [00:02:39.120]you probably will definitely wanna help the kids
- [00:02:43.860]just so they don't burn themselves
- [00:02:45.240]if they're not used to using these.
- [00:02:47.990]But they do stick a lot better than the school glue
- [00:02:50.870]or stuff like that.
- [00:02:54.300]So once you have that on you can kind of,
- [00:02:56.147]peel off the strings of the hot glue.
- [00:03:00.907]And then you can, this is my pea here.
- [00:03:04.330]So I have the pea all, all glued together.
- [00:03:08.200]And now I can take my Popsicle sticks,
- [00:03:13.950]and I can glue it onto the back of that.
- [00:03:22.304]Just a small line of the glue works really well.
- [00:03:34.877]There we go.
- [00:03:36.860]And so there is your Popsicle stick
- [00:03:40.790]with your garden marker as your pea.
- [00:03:44.530]You could also do many other different kinds
- [00:03:46.790]of, of vegetables, fruits, things that you may be growing.
- [00:03:51.430]I'm, I have the purple here,
- [00:03:53.440]and I got to thinking about doing eggplant.
- [00:03:55.980]And so I'm gonna try to think of an eggplant shape.
- [00:04:00.410]I know it's kind of oblongish.
- [00:04:02.500]I'm not gonna make it perfect, 'cause I know that
- [00:04:05.880]the kids are not gonna make it perfect as well,
- [00:04:08.520]and that's okay.
- [00:04:09.353]They can make it whatever they think an eggplant
- [00:04:11.040]kind of looks like.
- [00:04:21.256]And these are just scissors that I had in my office,
- [00:04:22.960]but you can also use fabric scissors,
- [00:04:24.700]probably work a little bit better.
- [00:04:26.240]So that's my eggplant shape.
- [00:04:27.976]It's, it's kind of a more looking like a pea,
- [00:04:30.680]but it looks, you can think it looks
- [00:04:32.830]like an eggplant.
- [00:04:34.210]And then I'm gonna take some black
- [00:04:38.250]and make a little stem out of it.
- [00:04:43.730]'Cause I do know that they have like, kind of a,
- [00:04:45.720]a longish stem on it.
- [00:04:52.157]And this is where it's fun to do research
- [00:04:54.110]on what they look like when you're planting them.
- [00:04:56.960]Or you may have 'em on the outside of a package
- [00:04:58.890]of your seeds that you can show the kids as well.
- [00:05:02.780]So I'm just gonna do that longer piece there
- [00:05:09.800]to kind of make my eggplant.
- [00:05:12.237]Glue that little piece on.
- [00:05:21.740]Give that a second to dry.
- [00:05:24.180]And then we can put that on a Popsicle stick.
- [00:05:30.090]And again, you don't need very much stuff.
- [00:05:32.720]Like I said, with these two.
- [00:05:34.360]You can also take a marker, if you want,
- [00:05:36.780]and write tomato, peas, eggplant, on it as well.
- [00:05:44.350]But otherwise that's kind of the reasoning with the,
- [00:05:46.330]with the markers is that if the kids make the top part,
- [00:05:48.780]they should know what it is.
- [00:05:50.410]And these are fun to make, and like I said,
- [00:05:52.460]use with a project, if you're going ahead
- [00:05:54.550]and maybe growing some tomatoes inside.
- [00:05:57.320]It's fun to have the kids make them
- [00:05:59.250]and watch them grow.
- [00:06:01.728]So we'll get this one on here.
- [00:06:07.727]And it doesn't take a lot of hot glue,
- [00:06:09.827]so you shouldn't need too much.
- [00:06:15.767]So, this is the project you can make at home,
- [00:06:17.860]using Popsicle sticks, felt, hot glue gun,
- [00:06:20.827]scissors, and glue sticks.
- [00:06:23.200]And you've got, I've got an eggplant, pea, and tomatoes,
- [00:06:26.110]that you can make your own gardening sticks.
- [00:06:28.240]So, enjoy this craft project.
- [00:06:29.830]Thank you.
