- [00:00:18.860]Hi, is there something I could help you with?
- [00:00:20.560]Hey, Katie.
- [00:00:21.470]Yeah, I am here today.
- [00:00:23.400]I'm trying to pick out some tomato plants for my garden.
- [00:00:26.432]Sure.
- [00:00:27.265]I wanna get a couple different.
- [00:00:28.440]I wanna get some cherry tomatoes and some bigger tomatoes
- [00:00:32.790]that we can chop up and use for salsa.
- [00:00:35.450]So this one.
- [00:00:36.980]I can help you find.
- [00:00:37.830]Yep, that's a chocolate sprinkles
- [00:00:39.340]and that's gonna be a dark colored cherry-sized tomato.
- [00:00:43.560]They're delicious.
- [00:00:44.393]Very sweet and just yummy.
- [00:00:47.180]Thinking about this, Katie,
- [00:00:48.210]I'm wondering do you guys grow all of these
- [00:00:51.120]here in your greenhouse?
- [00:00:52.310]Or how do they there's so many different kinds?
- [00:00:55.300]So tomatoes, we do start from seed here at the nursery.
- [00:00:58.890]Do you wanna go see how that happens?
- [00:01:00.700]Do you have time? That would be amazing.
- [00:01:02.790]Let's go talk about it.
- [00:01:03.840]Sounds great.
- [00:01:05.445](playful music)
- [00:01:10.010]So you were talking about planting those tomato plants.
- [00:01:13.480]So what's your first step, Katie.
- [00:01:15.210]So we make a special soil for our plants to grow in
- [00:01:19.240]and we mix that soil in our big soil mixer
- [00:01:22.410]and the soil mix contains pre-made professional
- [00:01:26.030]growing mix, some special fertilizer
- [00:01:29.760]or plant food for the plants and PitMoss,
- [00:01:33.670]and then some other foam type product
- [00:01:36.500]that helps keep the soil light.
- [00:01:39.030]So the soil mixes up in this big soil mixer
- [00:01:42.420]and we run our different size pots and trays
- [00:01:46.090]right through here and they can fill 'em
- [00:01:47.630]right on this conveyor belt.
- [00:01:49.350]I can show you how the conveyor belt runs.
- [00:01:50.770](machine roaring)
- [00:01:52.320]Oh yeah.
- [00:01:54.960]So it just goes through there.
- [00:01:57.100]And the soil comes right out here and I can push that.
- [00:02:01.600]It comes right out here like that and runs right through.
- [00:02:06.480]So if I run the conveyor belt
- [00:02:08.000]that soil will fall into our soil box at the end.
- [00:02:12.000]So some big pots if we're making hanging baskets
- [00:02:14.980]get filled by hand out of the soil box.
- [00:02:17.980]That's pretty cool.
- [00:02:18.813]And all of that is just mixed in this big
- [00:02:21.360]this big machine in here.
- [00:02:22.560]Yeah. Big machine that has a big spinning turbine thing
- [00:02:26.690]in there that just mixes it all up together
- [00:02:28.840]and we have to add some water.
- [00:02:30.090]So it's the right moisture content as well.
- [00:02:32.500]Oh, that's so fun.
- [00:02:33.333]So you get to play in the dirt when you work here.
- [00:02:35.570]Absolutely.
- [00:02:36.403]That's wonderful.
- [00:02:37.236]Yes. How exciting.
- [00:02:39.350]So what's next.
- [00:02:40.280]After they get the dirt into the pots, what do we do next?
- [00:02:43.890]So we have different things that we've done.
- [00:02:45.720]Either we have baby plants
- [00:02:47.210]that we need to put into these bigger pots.
- [00:02:49.450]That's usually what comes out of this conveyor belt
- [00:02:52.390]or the bigger pots.
- [00:02:53.860]And those baby plants can come to us in many different ways.
- [00:02:57.140]Some of the things like the tomatoes we talked about
- [00:02:59.930]we grow from seed here at the nursery.
- [00:03:03.380]Some things like things that are harder to grow
- [00:03:05.840]or different come to us in different ways.
- [00:03:07.890]They may come to us already as baby plants
- [00:03:10.570]that we put into the bigger pots that we want.
- [00:03:12.940]That's so neat.
- [00:03:13.790]Yes.
- [00:03:14.682]And some things we grow from a big plant
- [00:03:16.890]we can take a piece of a big plant
- [00:03:19.150]and make it into another baby plant
- [00:03:21.690]and I can show you how that works.
- [00:03:23.190]I would love that.
- [00:03:24.023]That'd be great.
- [00:03:25.062](playful music)
- [00:03:31.730]Okay, Katie.
- [00:03:32.563]So now you showed us how the soil is made
- [00:03:35.320]and how it comes outta that big machine.
- [00:03:37.640]And then let's talk about how, how do you plant them?
- [00:03:41.540]What's the next step?
- [00:03:42.490]Sure, sure.
- [00:03:43.390]So the soil fills the different size pots,
- [00:03:46.060]but we start with baby plants.
- [00:03:47.970]And we can get a baby plant in various ways.
- [00:03:51.220]Like we talked in the greenhouse about the tomatoes.
- [00:03:56.260]We grow our tomatoes here from seed.
- [00:03:59.550]So we have the seeds and they look like this.
- [00:04:03.160]They're really small.
- [00:04:04.520]They're tiny.
- [00:04:05.590]So we have to put those
- [00:04:07.140]grow those seeds up into baby plants.
- [00:04:10.420]And we do that in this tray that's called a plug tray.
- [00:04:14.700]Each of these holes
- [00:04:16.000]this will be filled with special soil
- [00:04:17.550]and each of these holes will get a seed
- [00:04:20.080]to make a tiny baby tomato plant.
- [00:04:23.010]They'll grow in here in a special area
- [00:04:26.530]and then those tomato plants will be transplanted
- [00:04:29.130]into bigger pots.
- [00:04:30.620]that have run through the soil machine.
- [00:04:33.290]And there's different seeds that we do this with.
- [00:04:35.270]Tomatoes are one and some seeds are very big.
- [00:04:39.540]This is a butternut squash seed
- [00:04:41.890]and it is much larger and is planted in a different way.
- [00:04:46.220]This seed does not go into one of these tiny plug trays.
- [00:04:50.130]We grow this directly into the bigger pot.
- [00:04:53.600]Okay. Yeah.
- [00:04:55.860]I think we have some of those 'cause those grow...
- [00:04:57.910]They're like vines.
- [00:04:58.870]They're vines. And so they're hard to transplant.
- [00:05:01.140]So we grow 'em directly.
- [00:05:02.480]Most of the time directly into the pot
- [00:05:04.660]that you would purchase at the nursery.
- [00:05:07.350]And another way we can get tiny baby plants
- [00:05:09.980]is we order them and they're shipped to us in plug trays
- [00:05:13.070]somewhat larger than this in many cases.
- [00:05:15.740]And then we transplant those baby plants
- [00:05:17.900]into the pot sizes that we need.
- [00:05:20.940]And one more way that we get baby plants
- [00:05:23.920]is to start with a big plant
- [00:05:26.500]and we take a portion of the big plant
- [00:05:28.410]a special piece off the big plant.
- [00:05:31.880]We can clean off some of these leaves
- [00:05:33.820]so that there's a fresh node there.
- [00:05:37.710]And we place it directly into the soil
- [00:05:41.250]and it grows in this tray.
- [00:05:42.133]Wow.
- [00:05:43.400]This tray then gets put on our missed bed
- [00:05:46.660]which is heated with hot water underneath
- [00:05:49.830]to keep it the right temperature
- [00:05:51.500]and then automatically misted periodically
- [00:05:55.590]throughout the day to keep it the right moisture.
- [00:05:59.040]And lets it get going and get growing
- [00:06:01.190]and it starts growing the roots.
- [00:06:04.344]Oh yeah, look at those.
- [00:06:06.640]And so we take these baby plants
- [00:06:08.580]with lots of nice roots and put it into a bigger pot.
- [00:06:12.840]And this pot is what someone could buy at the nursery.
- [00:06:17.200]Every plant that you buy has a tag in it.
- [00:06:19.990]Oh yeah. This one says Rosemary.
- [00:06:21.950]Yep. It tells you what it is.
- [00:06:23.860]It tells you how to grow it.
- [00:06:25.800]and sometimes what it can be used for
- [00:06:27.980]or how to space it in your garden.
- [00:06:30.850]And that gives all the information you need
- [00:06:32.390]to have a special plant.
- [00:06:35.080]That's amazing.
- [00:06:35.913]And Rosemary this is something that you can use
- [00:06:38.730]to cook with.
- [00:06:39.563]Right? Right
- [00:06:40.840]Yeah. Makes things taste delicious.
- [00:06:42.630]Oh it smells...
- [00:06:43.463]You guys this smell so good.
- [00:06:45.060]Oh, I love that smell.
- [00:06:46.540]That's very neat.
- [00:06:47.600]So in this greenhouse, so you're providing these plants
- [00:06:51.610]because they really plants need three things to grow.
- [00:06:54.020]They need sun, they need rain and then they need soil.
- [00:06:57.160]So you're giving them the soil and then your sprinklers
- [00:07:00.690]are like the rain and the mist.
- [00:07:02.920]And then the heat underneath is the sun
- [00:07:05.040]and the warmth.
- [00:07:05.873]Right.
- [00:07:06.706]And so once they get planted into the bigger pots
- [00:07:09.090]we take trays of these bigger pots or whatever size
- [00:07:12.140]to the various greenhouses
- [00:07:14.050]where some are just for vegetables.
- [00:07:16.290]Some are for certain flowers
- [00:07:18.310]and they again get exactly what they need
- [00:07:20.530]in that greenhouse in kind of a controlled environment
- [00:07:23.270]to grow healthy and strong.
- [00:07:24.720]So you can plant them in your garden.
- [00:07:26.280]Wow. That's so neat.
- [00:07:28.020]And there are so many little tiny plug holes on here.
- [00:07:32.220]That's a lot of plants that you guys can grow
- [00:07:34.352]and be in charge of to create plants for me.
- [00:07:37.750]Like I came today to come and get the tomato plants.
- [00:07:39.700]Yes. So yeah.
- [00:07:40.925](playful music)
- [00:07:47.840]Katie, thank you so much for your time today.
- [00:07:49.700]I am so excited to be able to go home
- [00:07:51.570]and plant my tomato plants
- [00:07:53.240]and my Rosemary that you showed me how you guys grow here.
- [00:07:55.417]You're very welcome.
- [00:07:57.140]It was a wonderful morning.
- [00:07:58.460]Yes. Thank you so much.
- [00:07:59.810]You're welcome.
- [00:08:00.709](upbeat playful music)
