- [00:00:02.180]I'd like to introduce to you a new initiative
- [00:00:04.960]we hope will both raise the profile of teaching and learning
- [00:00:07.590]at UNL and provide overdue recognition for instructors.
- [00:00:12.640]The Reflective Practitioner Program or RPP is designed
- [00:00:16.520]to create a formal process of recognition
- [00:00:18.720]for teaching and learning at UNL.
- [00:00:21.600]The RPP allows instructors a way to formally
- [00:00:24.300]and informally demonstrate their engagement
- [00:00:26.680]with teaching and learning.
- [00:00:29.230]The RPP incorporates attendance at workshops and institutes,
- [00:00:32.730]peer observation, personal reflection,
- [00:00:35.060]and participation in mentoring programs.
- [00:00:37.710]Fostering high-caliber teaching continues
- [00:00:39.860]to be a priority for the university.
- [00:00:42.520]Many instructors across our institution are already
- [00:00:45.450]deeply committed to advancing their teaching practice.
- [00:00:48.630]But because this work is unique and personal,
- [00:00:50.920]it's been difficult for deans and department chairs
- [00:00:53.330]to recognize and celebrate it in a formal way.
- [00:00:56.940]The Center for Transformative Teaching
- [00:00:58.500]would like to help change this.
- [00:01:00.710]The Reflective Practitioner Program seeks to encourage,
- [00:01:03.440]recognize, and reward professional development
- [00:01:06.120]and community building in teaching and learning at UNL.
- [00:01:10.010]The program supports ambition in teaching and learning
- [00:01:12.530]by providing a comprehensive program of activity
- [00:01:15.360]and institutional recognition.
- [00:01:17.850]For those who earn or maintain gold or silver status
- [00:01:20.730]in the RPP, there is access to reserved grant funding
- [00:01:24.410]of up to $3,000, which may be used for conference travel.
- [00:01:28.360]Further incentives for instructors include recognition
- [00:01:31.000]from the executive vice chancellor's office.
- [00:01:33.450]And each level also carries with it a title
- [00:01:36.080]that can be included on email signatures, webpages,
- [00:01:39.130]and elsewhere to indicate commitment to teaching
- [00:01:41.570]and learning and the development of the associated skills.
- [00:01:45.870]Perhaps most importantly, we intend that the program
- [00:01:48.610]should provide formal recognition of teaching
- [00:01:50.730]and learning skills and competencies that can be utilized
- [00:01:54.270]in tenure, promotion, and at annual review processes
- [00:01:57.190]at college and department levels.
- [00:02:00.290]By participating in the RPP, instructors become part
- [00:02:03.500]of a community dedicated to advancing the practice
- [00:02:06.460]of scholarship of teaching and learning
- [00:02:07.970]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:02:10.730]The RPP is designed for UNL instructors
- [00:02:13.220]who wish to maintain a record of growth and development
- [00:02:16.110]in their professional teaching and learning activity.
- [00:02:18.890]This includes tenured faculty, untenured faculty,
- [00:02:22.180]professors of practice, lecturers,
- [00:02:24.120]graduate teaching assistants, and anyone else
- [00:02:26.700]contracted to teach at the university.
- [00:02:29.470]The program also has a high degree of flexibility
- [00:02:32.070]in its requirements, which allows you to select
- [00:02:34.600]specific programming that speaks
- [00:02:36.270]to your own areas of interest.
- [00:02:38.500]This means whether you teach creative writing or physics,
- [00:02:41.310]in a classroom or online, to classes of five students
- [00:02:44.630]or 500 students, your teaching mentors
- [00:02:47.640]and instructional designers can help you
- [00:02:49.430]select programming that helps you develop the skills
- [00:02:52.390]that are most relevant for you.
- [00:02:54.900]The Reflective Practitioner Program also allows instructors
- [00:02:57.950]to incorporate activities from beyond the sense
- [00:03:00.360]of transformative teaching to include in the program.
- [00:03:03.760]Examples might be participation in departmental
- [00:03:06.470]or college-level teaching and learning activities
- [00:03:09.210]or programming from beyond UNL.
- [00:03:12.800]In conclusion, I warmly welcome you
- [00:03:14.860]to the Reflective Practitioner Program.
- [00:03:17.140]And don't forget, the Center for Transformative Teaching
- [00:03:19.550]is here to support you in all your teaching endeavors.
- [00:03:22.650]Please contact me, your college instructional designers,
- [00:03:26.130]or any of our team whenever you might need us.
