- [00:00:00.160]Welcome back, everybody.
- [00:00:01.470]Maples Pavilion, Palo Alto, California,
- [00:00:04.070]the site in Nebraska for the first time since 1990,
- [00:00:07.149]playing Stanford on the road at Stanford.
- [00:00:10.960]But let's visit with a huge Nebraska volleyball fan
- [00:00:13.710]Chancellor, Ronnie Green,
- [00:00:14.780]Chancellor of University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:16.910]Chancellor you have a lot of other duties,
- [00:00:18.520]but you are a huge volleyball fan.
- [00:00:20.040]Nebraska six and one
- [00:00:21.653]after stubbing his toe on Saturday night.
- [00:00:24.621]How do you think this season has gone so far?
- [00:00:26.760]Well, it's been fun to watch already JV, you know,
- [00:00:29.170]there's so much talent on this team and so many talented
- [00:00:32.670]freshmen on top of the talent that we had returning and
- [00:00:36.224]been to see most of the matches so far already this year,
- [00:00:40.380]Jane and I had great seats to watch at Creighton and CHI
- [00:00:43.864]last week and see that that sweep was wonderful.
- [00:00:47.720]And to see the poise that these freshmen are playing with,
- [00:00:50.150]it's just, it's just phenomenal to watch.
- [00:00:52.060]And yeah, last Saturday we had a little bit of, you know,
- [00:00:55.836]let down at Utah or with Utah,
- [00:00:58.560]but great to be playing Stanford again. You know,
- [00:01:00.970]two years ago we had them here and now the return there to
- [00:01:05.762]anytime you play, Stanford is a great match.
- [00:01:08.160]So, so looking forward to a great outcome tonight.
- [00:01:11.770]Chancellor Ronnie Green, we have learned a new acronym
- [00:01:14.980]and so it was fun to learn new acronyms.
- [00:01:16.260]This one is N I L name, image, and likeness.
- [00:01:20.890]The University portrays itself as a real
- [00:01:22.530]leader already in this field. How satisfied,
- [00:01:26.050]how gratified are you with the progress?
- [00:01:27.810]The program the University is making?
- [00:01:30.620]Well, A fair amount of change happening in
- [00:01:32.880]collegiate athletics right now.
- [00:01:34.203]And one of the lead of that is the idea of name, image,
- [00:01:38.840]and likeness, and the ability for student athletes
- [00:01:41.860]to monetize their own personal brand
- [00:01:44.760]associated with being a student athlete new, you know,
- [00:01:48.750]just went into effect and became
- [00:01:50.820]available July one of this year.
- [00:01:53.350]So we're very much in the early stages
- [00:01:55.950]of the rollout of NIL nationally.
- [00:01:59.209]We've been a leader already in that regard,
- [00:02:02.770]the University of Nebraska leading up to
- [00:02:05.466]the launch of NIL this year.
- [00:02:08.800]Our state here passed legislation unicameral a year ago,
- [00:02:13.090]a little over a year ago,
- [00:02:14.300]and this area to make that legal in Nebraska.
- [00:02:18.091]And then we've been working very closely with open doors and
- [00:02:21.650]with our College of Business in preparing our student
- [00:02:25.060]athletes to understand, and to be able to,
- [00:02:28.520]to understand how to take advantage of that.
- [00:02:31.880]So all of our incoming Husker student athletes have had an
- [00:02:35.250]introduction to tools and resources available that's meant
- [00:02:39.675]to maximize their experience within aisle.
- [00:02:43.626]We've covered topics with them,
- [00:02:45.960]including assessing their own personal strengths through the
- [00:02:48.760]Clifton Strengths Institute in our College of Business,
- [00:02:51.870]building their own brand on social media,
- [00:02:54.280]communication and networking that's required,
- [00:02:57.470]campus resources available,
- [00:02:59.350]help them understand all of these things,
- [00:03:01.840]financial literacy associated with running a business like
- [00:03:05.050]this for them athletic life skills has also had programming
- [00:03:09.770]that has integrated in aisle topics for student athletes
- [00:03:13.690]into a four year kind of tiered programming for them.
- [00:03:17.330]And then our,
- [00:03:18.690]our institution specifically the College of Business has
- [00:03:23.590]worked hard to, to provide literacy in this area.
- [00:03:27.250]We have actually a set of pop-up courses that have been
- [00:03:31.150]developed and are being implemented starting in October
- [00:03:34.800]on campus. One in business administration,
- [00:03:37.780]it's around strengths and the understanding of strengths and
- [00:03:40.770]investing in strengths with Dr. Tim Hodges of the cliffs,
- [00:03:44.440]Clifton strengths Institute in management,
- [00:03:47.300]pitching yourself and ideas, you know, with Sam Nelson,
- [00:03:51.410]who's the director of our center for entrepreneurship
- [00:03:53.710]in the College of Business,
- [00:03:54.770]and then over into J school
- [00:03:56.130]in journalism and mass communications, branding,
- [00:03:59.300]and the understanding of branding yourself in today's market
- [00:04:03.450]taught by Dr. Frankie Hawkman,
- [00:04:05.020]who herself was a student athlete,
- [00:04:07.130]a tennis player here at Nebraska.
- [00:04:09.189]And now on our faculty in this school of journalism.
- [00:04:13.840]Our law students have been assisting our student athletes
- [00:04:17.060]with setting up limited liability corporations for them as
- [00:04:20.380]businesses in this area.
- [00:04:21.939]And our College of Business has a set of NIL advisors,
- [00:04:26.160]working with students to help them understand this landscape
- [00:04:29.530]as well. And then open doors here in Lincoln.
- [00:04:32.600]And of course, a
- [00:04:34.130]a outgrowth of Husker athletics itself with like an ADI
- [00:04:39.600]or are working in this area leader in this area nationally,
- [00:04:43.140]we establish a relationship with them early on in this
- [00:04:46.060]process. Well, over a year ago,
- [00:04:48.370]it that are working with our student athletes as well.
- [00:04:51.030]So just a exciting change in the landscape,
- [00:04:55.000]but I'm really happy for our student athletes,
- [00:04:58.510]that they have this opportunity to develop their own
- [00:05:02.170]business skills in this way, with the,
- [00:05:05.370]the rollout of name, image, and likeness.
- [00:05:07.570]All skills and knowledge they can use long after
- [00:05:10.870]their days of playing are finished here at the University.
- [00:05:13.150]That's the chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:05:14.880]we've got the head coach, John Cook.
- [00:05:16.210]We come right back Nebraska getting ready
- [00:05:18.400]to play the Stanford, Cardinal don't go anywhere.
- [00:05:20.350]You're listening to big red volleyball.
