- [00:00:00.360]Rural America is often overlooked by architecture and design
- [00:00:03.690]professions. Students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln
- [00:00:07.260]are hoping to change that trend by building creative
- [00:00:10.320]partnerships with small communities. UNL professor of
- [00:00:14.100]architecture, Jeffrey Day joins us now with the very latest.
- [00:00:17.400]Jeffrey, so good to have you with us give us an update on
- [00:00:20.100]this initiative and what exactly your students are hoping to
- [00:00:23.250]do.
- [00:00:25.460]Thank you very much for having me on. I run a program at the
- [00:00:29.060]University of Nebraska College of Architecture called FACT
- [00:00:32.120]or Fabrication and Construction Team. And this gives
- [00:00:34.760]students an opportunity to work on real projects with real
- [00:00:37.610]clients and sometimes even build them. And we've been
- [00:00:40.610]working in rural communities around the state and also in
- [00:00:43.370]Kansas for a number of years, in order to help those
- [00:00:47.780]communities develop certain specific projects, but also to
- [00:00:51.260]think about how we can reconsider the rural as a creative
- [00:00:56.810]environment that is not secondary to the urban. In
- [00:01:00.560]Rushville, Nebraska out in the sand hills, we're working
- [00:01:03.230]with artists Mel Ziegler of the Sandhills Institute to
- [00:01:06.800]develop a cultural focal center in the town of Rushville.
- [00:01:11.000]This is a ranching community. And this will be a place where
- [00:01:13.880]artists and community members come together to re-envision
- [00:01:17.240]their their space in the in the landscape.
- [00:01:20.150]Just seems like a great partnership, especially with rural
- [00:01:23.300]Nebraskans. And so talk a little more specifics about what
- [00:01:26.900]both sides get out of this project.
- [00:01:30.410]Well, we really think of it as a win-win. The the students
- [00:01:33.350]of course get an incredible educational opportunity working
- [00:01:37.550]with within this case with the artist, Mel Ziegler, but also
- [00:01:40.910]with members of the community to help re-envision how they
- [00:01:44.300]can use their downtown space. We're converting an old
- [00:01:48.560]grocery store into a cultural center, so repurposing an
- [00:01:51.680]underused building within the town. And for the
- [00:01:56.690]neighborhood, of course in the town, they get this this
- [00:01:59.180]incredible opportunity to work with students, but also to
- [00:02:02.090]have a tremendous sort of revisioning of their downtown
- [00:02:06.080]environment.
- [00:02:07.400]That is great. And I love the idea of taking that grocery
- [00:02:10.970]store event space project, it seems perfect for a small
- [00:02:13.850]community. So what other projects have your students worked
- [00:02:16.700]on?
- [00:02:18.530]Well, we've worked with Art Farm in Marquette, Nebraska to
- [00:02:21.740]develop a master plan for a 40 acre farm that is also
- [00:02:25.670]serving as an artist's residency. They have a number of
- [00:02:28.610]public events for the community there as well. We've worked
- [00:02:32.510]with an art institution in Salina, Kansas, and currently
- [00:02:37.340]we're working with the Sheridan County 4H Foundation to
- [00:02:41.120]develop a new fairgrounds in Gordon, Nebraska which is very
- [00:02:44.990]close to Rushville. And that project is extremely exciting
- [00:02:48.440]for it'll be the biggest project we've done to date and it
- [00:02:50.930]incorporates all the students and community members from the
- [00:02:55.700]entire county.
- [00:02:57.570]Just a great partnership. That's the University of Nebra
- [00:03:00.450]ka–Lincoln professor of architecture Jeffrey Day. Thank
- [00:03:04.020]ou so much for your time and what you guys are doing there
- [00:03:06.450]or our small rural towns.
