- [00:00:00.160]We're back Canada kickoff. Huskers headed to a 2:40 kick
- [00:00:02.720]today against the Bulls of Buffalo.
- [00:00:04.560]And as we do each and every week, a chance to sit down
- [00:00:06.280]with the chancellor of the University
- [00:00:07.390]of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:09.400]Here we are. Game three of the football season already.
- [00:00:12.260]We've already had lots of volleyball matches at the
- [00:00:14.320]Devaney center. Soccer is underway, fall sports,
- [00:00:16.860]getting going, isn't it?
- [00:00:18.000]It sure is, Greg. Hard to believe we're already in the
- [00:00:20.300]third week of football season.
- [00:00:22.370]We had volleyball now finishing up early part of their
- [00:00:26.100]season, of course, had a great match and a great win
- [00:00:28.390]at Creighton earlier this week.
- [00:00:30.570]And soccer, you know, already has seven games
- [00:00:32.902]under their belt, kind of hard to believe
- [00:00:34.550]that that's that far into the season.
- [00:00:36.550]Certainly Husker fans love this time of year and especially
- [00:00:39.550]this year to be able to be engaged back as a nation in
- [00:00:42.159]Husker athletics. It's true that we,
- [00:00:45.873]we have the best fans in all of college sports.
- [00:00:48.771]We appreciate their sports, so much of our student athletes
- [00:00:52.154]and our programs across the board.
- [00:00:54.500]And, and here we are ready for our third football game
- [00:00:58.190]and second home game of the season.
- [00:00:59.710]Volleyball in action tonight at the Devaney Center
- [00:01:01.283]against a nationally ranked Utah squad.
- [00:01:03.729]Today is September 11th, the 20th anniversary
- [00:01:06.191]of a real fateful day for our entire company.
- [00:01:08.880]I know we've got some really interesting in,
- [00:01:10.609]in emotional things planned for the, for this today.
- [00:01:13.101]The university certainly has a great involvement with
- [00:01:16.702]research on behalf of those who serve our nation
- [00:01:19.780]and in the interest of national security,
- [00:01:22.640]what is some of the latest work on campus?
- [00:01:24.512]Well, Greg, I think we all been pausing
- [00:01:27.570]really all week and a lot of reflection about 20 years ago.
- [00:01:32.580]And what happened in our country on September 11th, 2001.
- [00:01:37.433]The Twin Towers and Pennsylvania and the Pentagon.
- [00:01:42.690]So many of us remember it really well. It's one of those.
- [00:01:45.520]Where were you that morning? When we saw what played out
- [00:01:50.530]happened. So hard to believe that's 20 years ago today,
- [00:01:55.460]The football game today will honor a lot of first responders
- [00:01:59.680]and military who serve our country and who have,
- [00:02:03.053]in some cases paid the ultimate price for that service.
- [00:02:08.140]So just a really time of reflection around 9/11
- [00:02:13.100]and what it's meant.
- [00:02:14.370]But I did mean it's meant for our country.
- [00:02:17.210]This is only the third time since 2001 that we have a home
- [00:02:21.650]football game that is on 9/11 on the
- [00:02:24.700]actual anniversary date. We hosted Southern Miss.
- [00:02:27.210]here in 2004 and Idaho in 2010. And of course,
- [00:02:31.875]even some media this week has relived and remembered the
- [00:02:36.220]game against Rice that was the first football game
- [00:02:39.680]after 9/11 happened and the tremendous emotional feelings
- [00:02:44.520]that were present that day and how Husker nation
- [00:02:48.190]did such a job recognizing the heroes around 9/11 then.
- [00:02:54.200]We are engaged in a lot of very important work
- [00:02:57.680]around national defense and security work that improves
- [00:03:01.710]the lives of all of us, but especially some of this area
- [00:03:04.919]of national defense. We are one of 14 university affiliated
- [00:03:11.590]research centers associated with the Department of Defense,
- [00:03:14.850]ours affiliated with STRATCOM here in Nebraska,
- [00:03:18.670]it's called the National Strategic Research
- [00:03:20.750]Institute of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:22.970]And we have some very important work currently ongoing
- [00:03:27.180]in NSRI, including collaborative work and bio security,
- [00:03:32.850]and our Institute of Ag natural resources around Ag and
- [00:03:35.293]natural resources, security defense, and countermeasures,
- [00:03:39.230]biological defense, bio surveillance, bio detection,
- [00:03:43.060]and diagnostic tools to protect our food supply.
- [00:03:45.890]If you want to think of it that way,
- [00:03:48.220]we have really compelling work being done between the
- [00:03:52.430]University of Nebraska Medical Center and our department of
- [00:03:55.050]chemistry here at UNL in Nebraska,
- [00:03:58.130]drug discovery and development pipeline,
- [00:04:00.660]particularly oriented at discovery of drugs for radiation
- [00:04:04.913]exposure, where the pharmaceutical industry
- [00:04:09.010]really is not that involved in that kind of work.
- [00:04:12.080]So important work that are being done at the university.
- [00:04:16.380]And then we have three UNL led projects that are in
- [00:04:19.650]independent research and development around wearable sensors
- [00:04:23.240]for our war fighters and the neurology that's behind
- [00:04:27.200]security decision making as well.
- [00:04:29.560]So a tremendous work that is part of the NSRI,
- [00:04:35.180]and a work that's protecting our country and working to
- [00:04:38.460]protect, you know, our military as well.
- [00:04:41.520]I should also mention that we just,
- [00:04:44.050]in this past year launched a series of NSRI fellows
- [00:04:49.210]across the University of Nebraska system,
- [00:04:51.620]31 of those fellows, the inaugural fellows,
- [00:04:55.010]or here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:04:58.000]with most of the others being at the University of Nebraska
- [00:05:00.400]Medical Center in UNO, so important military and security
- [00:05:05.330]work through the National Strategic Research Institute.
- [00:05:08.330]Well, thank you for updating us.
- [00:05:09.650]I think that might surprise a lot of people that are
- [00:05:11.630]supporters of university that we're that involved in that
- [00:05:13.859]area of things and visiting with the chancellor from the
- [00:05:16.630]University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green here on
- [00:05:18.770]Canada Kickoff. Enrollment numbers came out this past week.
- [00:05:22.820]What do you make of those? What are some of the
- [00:05:24.770]highlights as you dig into those numbers?
- [00:05:28.234]Well, Greg, I think we talked about maybe
- [00:05:29.960]even earlier in the season already,
- [00:05:31.640]that one of the things that we experienced this past year at
- [00:05:35.669]UNL was a record graduating class.
- [00:05:38.140]Last year during the pandemic,
- [00:05:39.910]we graduated more students than we ever have in our 152 year
- [00:05:43.780]history in our May and August commencement ceremonies about
- [00:05:47.880]600 more than we expected to graduate. They were able to
- [00:05:52.422]accelerate their coursework through additional offerings
- [00:05:55.660]that we had in 2020-2021. And very proud of that.
- [00:06:00.552]That our graduates, had that record class.
- [00:06:03.040]As a consequence that means we had about
- [00:06:04.940]600 fewer students than we than we anticipated
- [00:06:07.830]having this fall that would have graduated in December.
- [00:06:11.550]So a good result there, we've welcomed
- [00:06:15.840]just under 24,500 students back to UNL for
- [00:06:20.480]this current academic year. This past week,
- [00:06:22.660]we released our enrollment data.
- [00:06:25.090]Saw increases in resident, Nebraska students,
- [00:06:29.080]some a continued decline in international students,
- [00:06:32.510]heavily associated with the pandemic that we've been
- [00:06:35.680]experienced in the last couple of years,
- [00:06:38.410]but increases in our architecture programs, increases in our
- [00:06:41.690]engineering programs, increases in our law programs
- [00:06:45.340]in enrollment. We're very, very pleased about.
- [00:06:48.110]So great new class of freshmen.
- [00:06:51.530]It's the third year in a row we've had equal enrollment and
- [00:06:54.640]our freshmen class that we're very excited about.
- [00:06:57.354]And we're, looking forward to a great academic year
- [00:07:00.790]with this great group of student scholars
- [00:07:02.610]from all over the world at the University of
- [00:07:04.670]Nebraska Lincoln. - Well, fantastic.
- [00:07:06.460]Thank you for sharing some of that information with us
- [00:07:08.890]today. I'll let you go.
- [00:07:10.330]So you can go get your seat in and enjoy some,
- [00:07:12.307]some pregame festivities, which I think will
- [00:07:14.365]leave a lot of people with some chills today.
- [00:07:16.550]Yeah, it's going to be a, it's going to be a great game,
- [00:07:18.860]a great day to be in the stadium. A warm day.
- [00:07:21.080]So everybody needs to take their water and be cool and,
- [00:07:25.160]take care of themselves and hydrate as they cheer on the
- [00:07:28.310]Huskers today. But certainly a day we're also reflecting on
- [00:07:31.640]the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
- [00:07:34.010]There he is. Comments from the chancellor
- [00:07:35.230]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:07:36.960]Join me again next week down in Norman,
- [00:07:38.330]Oklahoma for that game, with the Sooners.
- [00:07:40.240]Matt Kokanee will be back with our Big 10 Blitz.
- [00:07:42.920]That's coming up next.
