- [00:00:00.000]Good morning, everyone.
- [00:00:01.651]And welcome to this year's Community Partner Update.
- [00:00:05.200]Before we get started wanting to begin today,
- [00:00:07.970]by acknowledging that the past present and future homelands
- [00:00:12.700]are the Pawnee, Ponca, Oto-Missouri, Omaha, Dakota, Lakota,
- [00:00:18.800]Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Kaw People.
- [00:00:21.460]As well as the relocated Ho-Chunk, Iowa SAC and Fox people.
- [00:00:26.740]Please take a moment to consider the legacies
- [00:00:28.590]of more than 150 years of displacement, violence, settlement
- [00:00:33.640]and the survival that brings us together
- [00:00:35.750]while virtually here today.
- [00:00:37.650]We respect and seek out inclusion of differences,
- [00:00:40.860]realizing that we can learn from each other.
- [00:00:42.810]And we look forward to building long lasting relationships
- [00:00:45.430]with indigenous people of Nebraska.
- [00:00:48.740]Thank you.
- [00:00:50.060]My name is Kayla Tupper
- [00:00:51.330]and I'm Associate Director in the office of admission.
- [00:00:54.020]You're so grateful that you are all here with us today.
- [00:00:57.110]Although also virtually planning,
- [00:01:00.250]weren't sure if we'd do it in-person or virtually,
- [00:01:02.000]but I do feel like the state right now of the state,
- [00:01:05.130]probably wasn't our best effort to dismiss virtually still.
- [00:01:07.730]So we are all save and the compliance of our offices,
- [00:01:11.390]but thank you so much for being here today.
- [00:01:14.850]Your attendance shows us that each one of you
- [00:01:16.960]care for your students and families that you serve.
- [00:01:20.110]And this last year it has been hard on everyone.
- [00:01:23.060]I can imagine that your level of commitment, dedication,
- [00:01:26.040]and care has increased, and that's not easy on anyone.
- [00:01:30.550]I want to take this time to thank each and every one of you
- [00:01:33.110]for your work and your energy
- [00:01:35.100]do know that it does have impact.
- [00:01:37.080]And we're hearing that impact all the time
- [00:01:38.950]and the students that would recruit
- [00:01:40.110]and enroll here at Nebraska.
- [00:01:43.650]Today we want to have,
- [00:01:45.630]we have various canvas partners here to share with you all
- [00:01:49.090]on how they and their staff are committing
- [00:01:51.420]to all State University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:54.763]The transition from high school to college
- [00:01:57.320]is not an easy one.
- [00:01:59.540]And each student brings their own barriers and challenges
- [00:02:02.550]as well.
- [00:02:03.750]As community stakeholders
- [00:02:06.891]you want what's best for your students and their families.
- [00:02:10.130]And I hope that today we can demonstrate the way Nebraska
- [00:02:13.240]is creating a home away from home for all of our students.
- [00:02:17.990]I do want to point out that recently
- [00:02:19.850]the conversation of safety and accountability
- [00:02:21.860]has been brought up on our own campus.
- [00:02:25.240]The goal of the university is always to provide
- [00:02:28.320]safe and comfortable and productive learning environment.
- [00:02:31.540]And when that goal is threatened
- [00:02:32.780]the university takes a situation very seriously.
- [00:02:36.130]In 2019, the university's chancellor, Dr. Ronnie Green
- [00:02:38.850]launched the campus wide collaborative on sexual misconduct.
- [00:02:44.850]A group of leaders to help create procedures
- [00:02:48.960]that were able to create strengthened sexual misconduct
- [00:02:52.940]related policies and procedures.
- [00:02:56.166]This last year, they created 35 recommendation
- [00:02:59.490]and the report.
- [00:03:01.180]To date 15 of these recommendations have been met,
- [00:03:04.350]17 are still in progress,
- [00:03:06.230]and three are still under consideration.
- [00:03:08.970]Last week, chancellor Green met with ASUN,
- [00:03:12.400]the University Student Government,
- [00:03:14.150]and committed to seven additional measures
- [00:03:16.540]to expand victim resources,
- [00:03:18.650]strengthened mandatory sexual misconduct
- [00:03:20.350]training for entire campus community,
- [00:03:22.370]and staff, faculty engagement on the issue.
- [00:03:24.950]So I just wanna let you know that while we are not perfect,
- [00:03:27.440]the university is trying every single effort
- [00:03:29.950]to make sure that every student on our campus
- [00:03:31.760]has a voice and that voice being heard.
- [00:03:34.170]And there we're all safe on our campus too.
- [00:03:37.270]At this time,
- [00:03:38.440]I want to welcome our campus partners to our program today.
- [00:03:41.550]Each person is here today,
- [00:03:43.120]work effortlessly to improve the lives
- [00:03:45.190]in a futurist of Huskers.
- [00:03:47.070]They're excited to share with you the work of their team
- [00:03:50.120]and their offices and their program.
- [00:03:52.280]And I hope that they invited the opportunity
- [00:03:54.130]to connect with you further
- [00:03:56.170]as we can better the lives of our Huskers.
- [00:03:59.190]Our first speaker today is Ms. Charlie Foster,
- [00:04:02.390]assistant, vice chancellor for inclusion,
- [00:04:04.640]student excellence,
- [00:04:05.800]and the director of our office of academic success,
- [00:04:08.510]intercultural services.
- [00:04:10.120]I'm gonna turn it over to Ms. Foster.
- [00:04:12.330]Thank you.
- [00:04:17.900]All right, I'm unmuted,
- [00:04:19.040]so I hope I show up well for you.
- [00:04:23.600]Good morning, I am so pleased to be with you this morning.
- [00:04:26.500]I have that really long title,
- [00:04:28.460]and that suggests to you that I do a whole bunch of things.
- [00:04:31.280]And I do my job with the office of diversity and inclusion
- [00:04:36.170]is to help students, faculty, and staff across campus
- [00:04:38.750]with issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
- [00:04:42.300]So I go to bed at night,
- [00:04:43.720]thinking about diversity and inclusion,
- [00:04:45.410]I wake up in the morning,
- [00:04:47.050]literally thinking about diversity and inclusion.
- [00:04:50.570]We have a bunch of folks on our team
- [00:04:52.990]who do some very specific things to help campus.
- [00:04:56.640]We have a focus on inclusive student excellence
- [00:05:00.370]as per my title and our office.
- [00:05:03.140]We focus on making sure that students feel welcomed,
- [00:05:05.960]that they come to a campus where they find their place.
- [00:05:10.710]And they're able to find the educational experience
- [00:05:14.370]that they're looking for.
- [00:05:16.130]We know that sometimes it's a challenge for first generation
- [00:05:20.510]or underrepresented or low income students
- [00:05:23.210]to find their place.
- [00:05:24.390]And we work very specifically with our students
- [00:05:26.880]to provide programming and opportunities
- [00:05:30.524]so that our students can be successful.
- [00:05:34.590]With that, we provide cultural heritage events.
- [00:05:37.840]We take care of a couple of different scholarships.
- [00:05:42.270]We do a bunch of things that transform the lives of students
- [00:05:46.630]through our efforts, but it's not just students.
- [00:05:50.020]We're also working with our faculty
- [00:05:53.620]because we know that faculty involvement
- [00:05:55.900]is important to students.
- [00:05:57.380]Students want to know that they're gonna be able to
- [00:06:01.230]have relationships with faculty who will strengthen us
- [00:06:04.600]and our office of diversity and inclusion.
- [00:06:07.400]Dr. Gwen Combs works specifically
- [00:06:09.560]with working on those issues.
- [00:06:12.060]We also do some very specific training
- [00:06:15.360]for faculty and staff on campus.
- [00:06:17.520]And we're currently in search for a new ABC
- [00:06:20.530]with the focus on that kind of education.
- [00:06:23.460]And we also have doctrine in Kinnser Friday,
- [00:06:25.870]who her work is on strategic initiatives,
- [00:06:30.010]words this morning, sorry,
- [00:06:31.410]strategic initiatives to help us
- [00:06:34.720]be able to think of really cool new things that we can do
- [00:06:37.390]to help our students feel some success in our campus.
- [00:06:40.950]Back to OASIS.
- [00:06:42.160]I have this wonderful team of folks who are working
- [00:06:45.170]to give students the support that they need on campus,
- [00:06:48.500]and that means one-on-one experiences.
- [00:06:50.900]So during the lifetime of our students,
- [00:06:52.323]and that's our scholarship students,
- [00:06:54.770]plus any students who are referred to us,
- [00:06:57.620]those students can go to our webpage
- [00:06:59.560]and sign up to be a part of OASIS
- [00:07:01.920]if they're not already included with us,
- [00:07:05.720]but we have a team of folks
- [00:07:07.640]who are providing through seminar opportunities
- [00:07:11.300]through one-on-one opportunities
- [00:07:14.320]and through peer mentorship,
- [00:07:15.590]we have a really great peer mentoring program
- [00:07:18.570]that supports our students through our office.
- [00:07:22.780]Katie Kodad is the program coordinator
- [00:07:26.190]who works with that effort,
- [00:07:27.600]and she works really tirelessly to make sure
- [00:07:29.990]that our peer mentors
- [00:07:31.680]have great connections with our students.
- [00:07:33.480]So we're very excited about this year.
- [00:07:37.160]We know that we have a bunch of students both first year
- [00:07:40.380]and second year students whose lives were really affected
- [00:07:43.840]by the pandemic.
- [00:07:44.680]And we're working really hard to make sure
- [00:07:46.700]that all those students have the types of engagements
- [00:07:49.740]and supports that they need to be successful.
- [00:07:53.293]I don't know if I want over my time,
- [00:07:54.126]but I tried really hard.
- [00:07:55.460]How was that?
- [00:07:56.293]Thank you so much Ms. Foster,
- [00:07:57.990]for all of your work and for your information,
- [00:08:00.220]say, we do appreciate it.
- [00:08:02.480]A part of you know a transition to college
- [00:08:04.170]it's being a part of living on campus.
- [00:08:06.240]And so our next speaker is an individual
- [00:08:09.110]who has very close ties to one of our scholar communities,
- [00:08:12.300]the Melvin Jones College Scholars.
- [00:08:14.350]I'd like to invite Dr. Colleen Jones
- [00:08:16.550]Associate Professor of Practice Emeritus
- [00:08:18.560]and the president of the Melvin Jones Foundation
- [00:08:20.990]to talk about this amazing resource
- [00:08:23.120]for our first-year students.
- [00:08:26.740]Thank you very much and good morning to everybody.
- [00:08:29.950]It's my privilege and my honor to be here
- [00:08:31.910]to talk to the community partners
- [00:08:33.530]because the community partners are extremely important
- [00:08:36.900]to the kinds of things that we do
- [00:08:38.410]with Melvin Jones Scholars.
- [00:08:40.310]The Melvin Jones Scholar community was created in 2004
- [00:08:44.870]to help with the retention of students of color
- [00:08:48.860]and to also help to enhance the experiences
- [00:08:52.080]of students of color on the university of Nebraska campus.
- [00:08:56.350]Be one of the oldest or older scholar communities on campus.
- [00:09:00.610]We have a wonderful track record of retention
- [00:09:04.430]and academic excellence for the students
- [00:09:07.200]who participate in the Jones scholars.
- [00:09:09.820]We have a program that works on leadership development,
- [00:09:13.210]on cultural adjustment and enhancement,
- [00:09:16.010]and also on civic engagement and working with the students
- [00:09:20.260]to broaden their perspective beyond the campus.
- [00:09:24.500]And so we are very much engaged in helping the students
- [00:09:28.070]to reach their full potential here,
- [00:09:31.140]and to really feel as if the university
- [00:09:34.260]is a place where they belong
- [00:09:36.080]and where they can feel comfortable
- [00:09:37.340]and where they can thrive.
- [00:09:38.780]We are very much concerned with the fact
- [00:09:40.970]that students may also feel a little lost
- [00:09:46.240]on the university of Nebraska campus,
- [00:09:47.810]particularly when they come from different areas
- [00:09:52.330]of either the state or even around the country.
- [00:09:55.150]And so we try to create a Melvin Jones Scholar community
- [00:09:58.260]one, which is an enhancement of their cultural wellbeing,
- [00:10:04.680]and also one that makes them feel as if their home
- [00:10:07.440]or in a family of students that are supportive with them
- [00:10:11.797]and the kinds of experiences that they've come from.
- [00:10:14.340]And also the kinds of challenges that they may meet.
- [00:10:18.870]The Melvin Jones scholar community
- [00:10:20.410]is actually named after my late husband, Melvin Jones,
- [00:10:23.200]who was the vice chancellor for business and finance
- [00:10:27.050]here at the university of Nebraska
- [00:10:28.900]and who died rather tragically in 1999.
- [00:10:32.920]And Melvin's legacy was one of mentoring.
- [00:10:35.940]And one of really enhancing
- [00:10:38.920]the development of people who may be in underrepresented
- [00:10:45.320]or minoritized positions to reach their full potential
- [00:10:48.310]and to achieve excellence in environments
- [00:10:51.150]in which they may not see themselves
- [00:10:52.960]or may not have historically seen themselves.
- [00:10:55.670]So that's the living legacy of Melvin Jones scholars.
- [00:10:59.180]And we welcome anyone of any race or creed.
- [00:11:04.850]We have really a stellar group of students
- [00:11:09.640]that we're looking for to be in the program.
- [00:11:13.750]We're a little bit unique also in that
- [00:11:16.580]we go beyond the freshman year with our students
- [00:11:20.470]and we maintain relationships and connections
- [00:11:22.830]and programming.
- [00:11:24.310]The Melvin Jones foundation does with the students
- [00:11:26.570]through graduation.
- [00:11:28.020]So it's not for us just the first year experience.
- [00:11:31.120]The first year experience is residential,
- [00:11:33.220]but the full-time the other experiences almost lifetime.
- [00:11:38.420]So we really encourage you to identify students
- [00:11:43.170]and encourage them to participate
- [00:11:44.720]in the Melvin Jones Scholar community.
- [00:11:46.530]And I welcome any questions you might have later on
- [00:11:48.930]during the Q&A, thank you very much and have a good morning.
- [00:11:52.710]Thank you so much, Dr. Jones,
- [00:11:54.520]we will go into some information later on
- [00:11:56.740]about how students can be,
- [00:11:58.680]can show interest in the Melvin Jones scholars.
- [00:12:01.420]It's a great community.
- [00:12:03.677]When I was a resident assistant in college,
- [00:12:05.210]I lived in the residence hall
- [00:12:06.500]that had Melvin Jones scholars,
- [00:12:07.940]and talk about community engagement.
- [00:12:10.610]It is overwhelming,
- [00:12:12.220]but a good amount of overwhelming for our students.
- [00:12:15.870]Next, I want to turn it over to two individuals.
- [00:12:18.620]We have two speakers, one will speak first and then next,
- [00:12:21.030]but university Nebraska has the opportunity
- [00:12:23.320]to have a really unique program here.
- [00:12:25.380]A preparatory academy,
- [00:12:26.970]the Nebraska college preparatory academy, and CPA for short,
- [00:12:30.300]because the long phrase to say,
- [00:12:32.750]but we have two individuals here to talk a little bit more
- [00:12:34.710]about how this preparatory academy,
- [00:12:37.310]how since can get involved.
- [00:12:38.740]It is a early involvement.
- [00:12:40.600]So we're talking like middle school involvement
- [00:12:42.590]after high school and college,
- [00:12:44.570]but boy Moi Padilla the director of NCPA
- [00:12:47.360]and then Abel Covarrubias,
- [00:12:49.340]the associate director will speak next.
- [00:12:53.670]Thank you, Kayla.
- [00:12:54.670]And good morning, everyone.
- [00:12:56.550]My name is Moi Padilla and I am the director of NCPA,
- [00:13:01.730]and it's nice to see a lot of familiar faces,
- [00:13:04.020]so I won't go too much into it,
- [00:13:05.860]but I'll tell you a little bit about what we do
- [00:13:08.500]and why we exist.
- [00:13:10.740]So essentially the program exists
- [00:13:14.150]to address many of those fundamental inequalities
- [00:13:17.900]in our education system,
- [00:13:19.860]by preparing our first gen low-income students,
- [00:13:24.130]majority of whom are students of color
- [00:13:25.640]for success in college and beyond.
- [00:13:28.740]We started in grand island,
- [00:13:30.950]Nebraska in 2006 because of community support,
- [00:13:37.982]we expanded to Omaha North Magnet High School in 2008.
- [00:13:41.450]And in 2017, we expanded to Winnebago and Omaha,
- [00:13:45.630]South Magnet High School.
- [00:13:47.010]So all of our students we've referred to them
- [00:13:51.200]as NCPA scholars.
- [00:13:53.280]They receive academic, social counseling,
- [00:13:55.950]leadership building, the whole shebang
- [00:13:58.810]throughout the eight to nine years
- [00:14:00.210]that they participate in our program.
- [00:14:02.700]And furthermore,
- [00:14:03.620]each scholar receives about $23,000 per year
- [00:14:06.560]for up to five years,
- [00:14:08.930]as long as they meet all of our expectations
- [00:14:12.720]and high standards that we have for each one of them,
- [00:14:15.540]because we know they can meet them.
- [00:14:18.030]So to this end,
- [00:14:19.030]we're looking for academically talented students
- [00:14:21.510]that you may know, we restart recruiting in middle school.
- [00:14:26.440]And so Abel Covarrubias who's our associate director
- [00:14:31.180]and is also a proud alum of the university and NCPA
- [00:14:36.070]and grand island is here to tell you a little bit more
- [00:14:39.040]about what that means and what that looks like.
- [00:14:44.370]Thank you, Moi, and good morning everyone,
- [00:14:46.040]glad that you can make it out here with us this morning.
- [00:14:49.170]As Moi mentioned, I have the opportunity of serving
- [00:14:52.020]the high school portion of our program.
- [00:14:54.750]Our program does serve our students
- [00:14:56.530]as soon as ninth grade entering ninth grade in high school.
- [00:15:00.147]And that specifically out in the Omaha area,
- [00:15:02.440]being Omaha, north and Omaha, South High Magnet Schools,
- [00:15:06.000]and then continuing that support
- [00:15:08.470]from all the way up through graduation,
- [00:15:11.120]and then providing those students
- [00:15:13.040]who meet expectations requirements within the NCPA program,
- [00:15:17.970]and are admissible to the university,
- [00:15:20.680]will then receive a financial promise,
- [00:15:22.320]what will cover their direct cost of attendance
- [00:15:24.400]here at the university of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:15:26.610]And that direct cost of attendance was estimated
- [00:15:28.620]close to about 23,000 in this past year.
- [00:15:31.830]And so that again is a huge benefit relief
- [00:15:34.810]that we provide to our students
- [00:15:36.840]prior to those students even reaching the university though,
- [00:15:39.660]as was mentioned, we do provide a number of resources,
- [00:15:42.850]those being academic resources,
- [00:15:45.050]helping our students with preparing for the ACT
- [00:15:48.300]college access, making sure that those students
- [00:15:50.510]are developing those critical thinking writing skills,
- [00:15:53.780]but then also preparing them for public speaking.
- [00:15:56.220]Additionally, we provide some wellness support
- [00:15:58.750]at each individual high school and have the opportunity
- [00:16:02.020]to pair those individuals up with peer mentors
- [00:16:04.910]that are actual college students here
- [00:16:06.600]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:16:08.860]and frequently get to make visits
- [00:16:10.380]whether they work virtually or in-person this past year.
- [00:16:13.410]But as we mentioned,
- [00:16:14.730]we are currently recruiting our eighth grade students.
- [00:16:17.830]One of the major changes that you will see here
- [00:16:20.180]in front of you within regards to our application process
- [00:16:23.610]is our deadline.
- [00:16:24.820]We have now changed our application deadline
- [00:16:27.530]from our spring to now November 1st.
- [00:16:30.270]So again our deadline has changed to November 1st.
- [00:16:33.880]Big reason of that is because OPS is shifting
- [00:16:37.160]how they are offering and placing students
- [00:16:39.940]in regards to their high school selection.
- [00:16:43.290]And so making sure that we are updating
- [00:16:46.180]or providing some names sooner than later
- [00:16:49.070]is gonna ensure that those students
- [00:16:50.430]who are selected as finalists in our program
- [00:16:53.030]are being placed at the high school that was selected
- [00:16:56.210]for them or that they had selected for themselves
- [00:16:58.420]and as a family.
- [00:16:59.253]So again, November 1st is now our deadline
- [00:17:02.490]and we will be working towards notifying those students
- [00:17:05.260]as soon as possible.
- [00:17:06.530]To be eligible for the Nebraska college prep program.
- [00:17:09.770]We expect the student
- [00:17:10.990]again to be in that current eighth grade year,
- [00:17:13.560]being low income.
- [00:17:14.610]So good indicator of being low income free or reduced lunch,
- [00:17:18.060]always encourage any student to apply.
- [00:17:20.230]If you are unaware or unsure of what their income status is,
- [00:17:23.760]our application process will evaluate those
- [00:17:26.020]and we will review those and make
- [00:17:27.710]and provide a decision to that family.
- [00:17:29.450]So always encourage that student family,
- [00:17:31.400]regardless of if you are unsure or know exactly
- [00:17:34.360]what their situation is,
- [00:17:35.850]first-generation that being one or both parents
- [00:17:38.660]have not attended a four year institution.
- [00:17:41.720]Current eighth grader must be college are,
- [00:17:44.540]excuse me, must be algebra ready.
- [00:17:47.260]So that being they're currently in algebra now,
- [00:17:50.270]pre-algebra even geometry to that extent
- [00:17:53.150]as an eighth grader, academically talented.
- [00:17:56.330]And so any of those students who are,
- [00:17:58.250]again going above and beyond challenging themselves
- [00:18:00.650]in those classrooms,
- [00:18:02.020]challenging themselves
- [00:18:02.990]to some of those leadership opportunities
- [00:18:05.000]within their middle school, our application,
- [00:18:07.490]it will include four different components.
- [00:18:10.610]And that being our general application, student essay,
- [00:18:14.730]parent/guardian letter of support,
- [00:18:16.790]and then each letter of recommendation,
- [00:18:18.760]all of these application documents, materials,
- [00:18:22.440]questions for those specific essays,
- [00:18:24.490]whether that be the student essay parent letter,
- [00:18:26.630]or even the letter of support, you can find those documents,
- [00:18:30.430]land the questions on our website at ncpa.unl.edu,
- [00:18:35.000]or feel free to contact myself at ncpa.unl.edu,
- [00:18:39.470]just like we are opening up our application.
- [00:18:42.370]We are also opening up our information sessions,
- [00:18:45.470]application, workshops.
- [00:18:47.310]We also are made a space out on our website
- [00:18:50.350]where if you would like to request any individual
- [00:18:52.290]one-on-ones or group presentations,
- [00:18:54.500]we can definitely review those,
- [00:18:55.810]whether those be virtually, in-person
- [00:18:57.900]and definitely accommodate for any style of presentation,
- [00:19:00.720]time of day, that you might need
- [00:19:02.360]that will suit the need of your family and your students.
- [00:19:05.480]But again, any questions that you might have,
- [00:19:08.220]please feel free to get in contact with Moi Padilla
- [00:19:11.140]has emailed listed there, myself,
- [00:19:13.240]especially when you are needing any sort of questions,
- [00:19:15.790]contact, help with our application,
- [00:19:18.550]but just want to send a huge thank you for an appreciation
- [00:19:22.360]for the help that you'll be providing to our program
- [00:19:24.997]and that you've already provided to our students
- [00:19:26.950]and families in the past.
- [00:19:30.200]Thank you Moi and Abel, a very unique program.
- [00:19:33.590]We're so thankful to have such a great program in Nebraska,
- [00:19:36.950]who knows if they expand a little further.
- [00:19:39.960]Moi and Abel have a lot of work ahead of them,
- [00:19:42.070]but thank you all for your information.
- [00:19:44.870]I mentioned earlier that the transition to college
- [00:19:46.990]can definitely be a rough one for any student
- [00:19:49.230]regardless of their background.
- [00:19:50.800]So we take transitioning here very seriously
- [00:19:52.930]at the university and making sure that our students
- [00:19:54.760]have all the different opportunities for success
- [00:19:57.950]as a make transition and graduate on time
- [00:20:01.700]and also graduate with a huge smile on their face
- [00:20:04.890]and a huge partner, and making sure that our students
- [00:20:07.700]do graduate successfully on time is Lori Romano,
- [00:20:11.860]director of our center for academic success and transition.
- [00:20:15.140]They're gonna talk a little bit more about
- [00:20:16.350]what this area does and how we're making sure
- [00:20:18.490]our students are finishing college on time
- [00:20:21.100]and transitioning well.
- [00:20:25.747]Okay, great.
- [00:20:26.580]Thank you, Kayla.
- [00:20:27.413]Can you hear me okay?
- [00:20:28.330]Okay, perfect.
- [00:20:29.163]So thanks so much for inviting me to speak about
- [00:20:33.450]the CAST office or the Center for Academic Success
- [00:20:35.640]and Transition.
- [00:20:37.230]As our name says, and as Kayla introduced our offices here
- [00:20:40.570]to help students transition, not just to the university,
- [00:20:45.350]we know that that high school to college
- [00:20:47.320]or you know students have taken a gap year,
- [00:20:49.230]or if they've maybe started at another institution
- [00:20:51.900]and are coming to Nebraska, that's a big transition.
- [00:20:55.290]And so we do a lot of focus on that first year,
- [00:20:58.320]especially first semester with students,
- [00:21:01.530]but the CAST office is open to all students at Nebraska.
- [00:21:04.870]And the really, really important part of this is that
- [00:21:07.640]we want to help students be successful
- [00:21:10.360]and success means different things to different people.
- [00:21:13.770]Some students come in and they've really got
- [00:21:16.830]the academics on lock.
- [00:21:18.950]They're really interested in the subjects.
- [00:21:20.910]They have some really good academic success skills
- [00:21:24.130]that they've sort of built over time.
- [00:21:26.950]But what we see is a lot of students come in
- [00:21:29.420]and they struggle
- [00:21:30.253]with that high school to college transition
- [00:21:31.510]because college is nothing like high school.
- [00:21:35.240]So our office is sort of unique
- [00:21:37.330]where we are open to all of the students at the university.
- [00:21:40.440]It is not just a first year programming.
- [00:21:44.350]We want to see students kind of progress
- [00:21:46.670]throughout their time at the university.
- [00:21:48.160]And it's not just a one and done appointment.
- [00:21:50.020]They can come to our workshops,
- [00:21:53.080]they can set up appointments
- [00:21:54.670]with our academic success coaches,
- [00:21:57.780]throughout their time at Nebraska.
- [00:21:59.150]We have a lot of students that maybe
- [00:22:01.010]want to have some pretty regular check-ins
- [00:22:04.420]like maybe once a month or once every couple of weeks
- [00:22:06.440]check in with an academic success coach
- [00:22:08.110]and more constant skills.
- [00:22:09.590]So I'm gonna talk really briefly
- [00:22:11.930]about the different ways that we help students.
- [00:22:14.340]So, first of all, I mentioned our workshops.
- [00:22:16.560]We have academic success workshops on topics like
- [00:22:19.150]time management, which is a huge one, basic study skills.
- [00:22:22.940]Like how do I actually study in college?
- [00:22:25.040]What does it mean to study?
- [00:22:27.120]We work on in particular note-taking
- [00:22:29.540]and reading with students, test prep and test preparation.
- [00:22:33.520]We even have some workshops designed around,
- [00:22:36.240]just kind of overall critical thinking,
- [00:22:38.280]how do they connect their different classes
- [00:22:40.380]to the extracurriculars that they're signing up for,
- [00:22:42.620]or the clubs that they're joining
- [00:22:44.520]or the careers they're interested in.
- [00:22:46.340]And then one of our popular workshops is called
- [00:22:48.730]Procrastinators Unite Tomorrow.
- [00:22:50.760]And it's all about procrastination
- [00:22:53.040]and motivation, like how do I kind of dig myself
- [00:22:55.180]out of this funk that I find myself in
- [00:22:57.260]about halfway through the semester?
- [00:22:59.610]So our workshops are, they're held weekly,
- [00:23:02.610]it's a different topic every week.
- [00:23:04.290]Students can just show up.
- [00:23:05.530]They don't really need to sign up for anything are all free.
- [00:23:09.500]Probably my favorite part of my job or our job
- [00:23:12.330]is our one-on-one academic success coaching.
- [00:23:14.880]And this is where, instead of a workshop
- [00:23:17.220]or kind of a classroom setting,
- [00:23:18.890]students actually get to set appointments
- [00:23:20.750]with our team of academic success coaches.
- [00:23:23.450]And typically the appointments are 30 minutes to start
- [00:23:27.080]and students get to come in and sit down with this coach.
- [00:23:30.520]We get to know about them.
- [00:23:31.840]We get to know who they are,
- [00:23:33.320]where they're from, what are they majoring in?
- [00:23:36.090]Do they have a major yet?
- [00:23:37.260]Or are they starting to rethink it
- [00:23:38.640]or is college kind of not what they were expecting?
- [00:23:41.950]And then we want to find out from students,
- [00:23:44.070]okay, what's going well, what's working?
- [00:23:47.030]What have you seen so far?
- [00:23:48.230]And then what are some of the challenges that you're facing?
- [00:23:50.850]And we really want to help students
- [00:23:52.030]work through those challenges.
- [00:23:54.130]We tend to kind of advertise ourselves.
- [00:23:57.690]We work closely with admissions,
- [00:23:58.870]but then also with the new student enrollment team,
- [00:24:01.130]because we really want students to be familiar
- [00:24:05.010]with the CAST office and have us be the office
- [00:24:07.470]where if they have questions
- [00:24:08.980]and they don't know where to go,
- [00:24:10.510]we want to help be that connector for them.
- [00:24:12.600]So we tell them, come to CAST,
- [00:24:14.370]it might end up being a question
- [00:24:16.070]that's really related to your financial aid and billing.
- [00:24:18.670]And then we're gonna get you connected to the Husker hub
- [00:24:21.640]or a financial aid specialist.
- [00:24:23.240]If you come in and talk to us
- [00:24:24.640]and you're really, really struggling,
- [00:24:27.300]you know finding a job,
- [00:24:29.510]we can get you connected to like career services
- [00:24:31.580]and help get you kind of hooked up in that way.
- [00:24:35.850]So it's, on top of the one-on-one coaching
- [00:24:39.660]and the workshops that we offer,
- [00:24:40.860]we really want to be an office that is directly
- [00:24:43.990]connecting students to other resources on campus.
- [00:24:46.120]We spend a lot of time talking about that.
- [00:24:48.560]And then the other thing that I want to highlight
- [00:24:50.660]is that we also have several special programs
- [00:24:53.150]for different groups or populations of students.
- [00:24:56.140]So if a student happens
- [00:24:59.060]to get an emerging leader scholarship,
- [00:25:01.550]they are automatically in a program with us
- [00:25:03.850]where they're gonna be connected to a coach,
- [00:25:05.330]some peer mentors, they will be in a 12 week seminar course
- [00:25:09.500]to kind of help with the college transition.
- [00:25:11.920]If students have received a Nebraska promise scholarship
- [00:25:14.680]and they are not connected to any other retention program
- [00:25:17.380]on campus, we highly encourage them to enroll
- [00:25:20.960]in a first-year seminar course with our staff.
- [00:25:23.630]Again, that helps with that transition
- [00:25:25.310]and helps familiarize them with the university
- [00:25:27.120]and kind of connect them to resources.
- [00:25:29.350]And then we have the first Husker program,
- [00:25:31.210]which is for first-generation students.
- [00:25:33.560]So if students happen to be first-generation
- [00:25:35.900]and they're not connected to some of the other programs
- [00:25:37.700]on campus, we want to welcome them in,
- [00:25:39.800]invite them to move to campus early,
- [00:25:41.730]get really familiar and get connected.
- [00:25:44.780]We also have some particular programming
- [00:25:47.660]for international students,
- [00:25:49.730]just we have some workshops that are specifically
- [00:25:51.950]designed for them because coming to the United States
- [00:25:55.560]and being immersed in the American academic system,
- [00:25:58.770]is way different than a lot of what they've experienced
- [00:26:01.640]in their home countries.
- [00:26:02.473]So we help in that way.
- [00:26:03.940]And then we also have transfer programming.
- [00:26:06.960]So students who are transferring to the university,
- [00:26:09.290]we do a lot of kind of bonding experiences,
- [00:26:13.870]and get them connected to a team of peer mentors
- [00:26:18.190]where they can ask some really specific transfer
- [00:26:20.470]related questions and help them get connected
- [00:26:22.924]to the university at large.
- [00:26:24.990]So, as I said, the Center for Academic Success
- [00:26:27.980]and Transition, we really are kind of the supporting cast.
- [00:26:31.730]That's kind of our little tagline that we joke about,
- [00:26:34.500]but we really want to be the supporting cast
- [00:26:36.370]for the students as they are, coming to campus
- [00:26:39.620]and being immersed and involved here.
- [00:26:41.620]So you can find a lot more information on our website.
- [00:26:44.700]It is success.unl.edu.
- [00:26:47.490]And if you want to fire through any questions
- [00:26:49.533]that you have about our specific programs
- [00:26:52.230]to success@unl.edu,
- [00:26:54.500]we'd be happy to answer any of your questions.
- [00:26:58.234]Thank you so much, Lori,
- [00:26:59.870]what are the chances of staff being involved
- [00:27:02.120]in that procrastinators unite tomorrow group?
- [00:27:04.250]Because I myself would benefit greatly on that group.
- [00:27:08.490]I think so.
- [00:27:09.580]All are welcome.
- [00:27:10.413]You can come and sit in.
- [00:27:11.770]Thank you so much.
- [00:27:12.956]And you're welcome.
- [00:27:13.789]I think that this group definitely shows that
- [00:27:15.850]it's not what you know, but it's who you know,
- [00:27:17.520]so as long as you know who CAST is,
- [00:27:19.860]they're going to help get you connected all across campus.
- [00:27:22.050]So as you talk to your students about transitioning,
- [00:27:24.490]talk about this amazing center, this resource,
- [00:27:26.910]because they will truly connect you through all campus.
- [00:27:30.720]Like I mentioned earlier, too,
- [00:27:31.750]it's been hard this last year,
- [00:27:33.530]but two years who knows the future's gonna bring.
- [00:27:36.160]So the way of deciding where to go to college,
- [00:27:38.690]moving away from home,
- [00:27:40.080]it's hard academically, but also hard mentally too.
- [00:27:43.920]So we have an amazing resource here on campus.
- [00:27:47.000]They're helping our students become resilient.
- [00:27:49.940]So Constance Boehm Connie is here to talk about
- [00:27:53.120]student resilience and their services
- [00:27:55.830]through Big Red Resilience & Well Being services.
- [00:28:01.210]So, hello, everyone.
- [00:28:02.360]It's great to be here this morning.
- [00:28:04.127]And I love being able to talk about
- [00:28:06.830]Big Red Resilience & Well Being with new people,
- [00:28:09.560]because it can really help us connect to even more students
- [00:28:13.370]that need our services or that want to get involved
- [00:28:16.370]with what we do.
- [00:28:17.730]So we were created in 2018 by the office of student affairs
- [00:28:23.200]to really enhance what was being done around mental health
- [00:28:26.500]promotion and do suicide prevention.
- [00:28:29.780]We quickly determined that we had three key values
- [00:28:34.390]that led our efforts.
- [00:28:37.100]The first one was being innovative
- [00:28:39.580]and we're always trying new ideas and some fail,
- [00:28:43.940]a lot succeed.
- [00:28:46.110]So we're very innovative in our approaches
- [00:28:48.417]and we're always reaching out for new ideas
- [00:28:51.090]from other institutions to share what's working
- [00:28:54.310]in mental health promotion.
- [00:28:56.000]We're also inclusive and really try to provide services
- [00:29:00.820]and involvement opportunities
- [00:29:03.240]for our diverse student population.
- [00:29:06.000]And we are student focused.
- [00:29:07.860]We have over a hundred student volunteers
- [00:29:10.480]that work with us and help us do what we do,
- [00:29:14.130]which we couldn't reach the a hundred thousand students
- [00:29:17.270]that we reached last year
- [00:29:18.830]without these amazing student volunteers.
- [00:29:22.400]So wanted to share some of our key services and activities.
- [00:29:27.620]We do a suicide prevention gatekeeper training called REACH.
- [00:29:33.361]And this is a training where we have trained 4,000
- [00:29:35.570]faculty staff and students to be able to identify students,
- [00:29:40.630]faculty, or staff who may be struggling
- [00:29:42.810]and thinking about suicide.
- [00:29:45.430]So gatekeepers are trained in signs and symptoms to look for
- [00:29:50.300]as well as resources to connect individuals with.
- [00:29:54.590]And we hope we've been doing this since 2018,
- [00:29:58.340]but this year we have a high goal of
- [00:30:00.500]adding 2000 more gatekeepers to our 4,000.
- [00:30:05.000]So by the end of this year,
- [00:30:06.440]we want 6,000 gatekeepers trained on our campus
- [00:30:09.740]to help prevent suicide.
- [00:30:12.730]We also provide wellbeing, coaching,
- [00:30:15.030]and wellbeing coaching was established
- [00:30:17.030]because we felt like students
- [00:30:18.191]just needed another peer to talk to.
- [00:30:22.160]So we have 30 trained wellbeing coaches.
- [00:30:24.890]They focus on positive techniques of positive psychology.
- [00:30:30.030]They address such topics as stress management,
- [00:30:34.040]self-care, connecting with one another,
- [00:30:38.010]relationship building
- [00:30:39.920]and they will meet with students one-on-one,
- [00:30:42.760]they will meet face to face with NASA on this year.
- [00:30:46.410]You can walk with a wellbeing coach outside,
- [00:30:49.660]and we are also are continuing doing Zoom wellbeing,
- [00:30:53.500]coaching meetings.
- [00:30:55.030]And as I mentioned, we have 30 trained,
- [00:30:57.310]amazing student volunteers
- [00:30:59.910]who help us do wellbeing coaching.
- [00:31:03.310]So we also have Husker Pantry,
- [00:31:07.000]which is part of Big Red Resilience & Well Being.
- [00:31:10.160]The Husker Pantry on city campus
- [00:31:12.650]has been in existence since 2015,
- [00:31:16.090]serves over 200 students a week.
- [00:31:20.720]And we just added last week, in fact,
- [00:31:24.020]a pantry on east campus.
- [00:31:26.240]And we have amazing partnerships across the community
- [00:31:30.300]to help our food insecure students.
- [00:31:33.680]In fact, last week we had 150 pounds of produce
- [00:31:38.730]come into the pantries.
- [00:31:40.850]So it's been quite amazing to see the support
- [00:31:44.520]we get from the community, for Husker pantries.
- [00:31:47.820]We also do outreach presentations and outreach events.
- [00:31:53.180]We have a, how the hell are you series
- [00:31:55.820]that we're taking off this year,
- [00:31:57.860]which our outreach events done every other week
- [00:32:00.670]to really engage students and more than anything,
- [00:32:04.060]help inform students about the amazing resources
- [00:32:07.870]we have on our campus to help support their mental health.
- [00:32:12.200]We are also developing a collegiate recovery community,
- [00:32:16.930]a community where students in recovery from alcohol
- [00:32:19.730]and other drug use can join together,
- [00:32:22.750]can feel a part of campus activities.
- [00:32:25.740]They have recovery meetings weekly,
- [00:32:28.020]as well as various social events.
- [00:32:30.880]So those are some highlights
- [00:32:32.300]about what we do in Big Red Resilience & Well Being.
- [00:32:35.130]We're always looking for volunteers
- [00:32:38.170]to get their help in the pantry, to be wellbeing coaches,
- [00:32:41.870]to help us in a variety of other ways.
- [00:32:44.720]We depend on our student interns and practicum students
- [00:32:49.160]as well.
- [00:32:49.993]So thank you for the opportunity to share a little bit
- [00:32:52.680]about Big Red Resilience & Well Being.
- [00:32:54.530]Always welcome any questions you may have
- [00:32:56.930]or ideas of how we can improve or enhance what we're doing.
- [00:33:02.092]Thank you so much for this update
- [00:33:03.450]and for really supporting our students
- [00:33:05.790]in every aspect on campus, really appreciated.
- [00:33:08.850]So we just went through a lot of different resources
- [00:33:10.650]that we currently have on campus
- [00:33:12.510]that support our current students.
- [00:33:13.920]So if you're thinking about cash,
- [00:33:15.690]I send students to university Nebraska,
- [00:33:17.300]how they be supported, how I know they'll be successful,
- [00:33:20.210]will be taken care of.
- [00:33:21.260]I hope that we have done a good job of kind of giving
- [00:33:24.340]you a good update and a summary
- [00:33:26.550]of what the university is doing
- [00:33:27.890]and how we're making changes every single day.
- [00:33:30.910]But right now you have current high school students
- [00:33:33.440]who are just trying to get through high school right now.
- [00:33:35.730]So I'm gonna turn it over to my colleague
- [00:33:38.010]and let them introduce themselves.
- [00:33:39.380]But they're gonna talk about what you can do right now
- [00:33:42.040]for your current high school students
- [00:33:43.180]to help them prepare for admissions and enrollment
- [00:33:46.920]and talk about those different steps and deadlines.
- [00:33:48.660]So I'm gonna turn over to them.
- [00:33:54.200]Hi there.
- [00:33:55.033]So my name is CJ Kracl and I serve as
- [00:33:57.540]the Assistant Director for Access, Inclusion and Diversity.
- [00:34:01.360]So thank you once again,
- [00:34:02.970]as Kayla mentioned for attending our virtual update,
- [00:34:06.210]while we would love to be able to welcome you all in-person,
- [00:34:09.500]I'm glad that we're able to provide you information
- [00:34:11.340]in this virtual format.
- [00:34:13.440]Also, we've had wonderful presenters
- [00:34:16.260]talking about all of the different services
- [00:34:18.360]that are really important for students
- [00:34:20.030]figuring out their college selection,
- [00:34:22.160]and maybe what's gonna be the best fit for them,
- [00:34:24.740]but we now need to think about
- [00:34:26.480]some of our admission requirements,
- [00:34:28.160]and we want to make sure we're preparing you
- [00:34:29.530]with the most up-to-date information
- [00:34:31.370]so that you can help your students
- [00:34:33.370]with that college selection
- [00:34:34.660]and that college admissions process.
- [00:34:36.860]So for some of you,
- [00:34:38.820]these are probably very similar
- [00:34:40.740]to what you've seen in the past.
- [00:34:42.770]These are admission requirements
- [00:34:44.120]and we have our performance requirements,
- [00:34:46.750]but then we also have our core course requirements.
- [00:34:49.780]When it comes to our performance requirements,
- [00:34:51.920]students don't need to meet every single one of those.
- [00:34:54.690]They only have to meet
- [00:34:55.930]one of those performance requirements.
- [00:34:58.400]In addition to all of our core course requirements
- [00:35:00.990]in order to meet our assured emission requirements.
- [00:35:04.070]So our performance requirements include
- [00:35:06.380]having a 3.0 cumulative GPA
- [00:35:09.460]or scoring a 20 or higher on the ACT,
- [00:35:13.160]or scoring a 1040 or higher on the SAT
- [00:35:17.320]and then, or ranking in the top half of their high school,
- [00:35:19.870]graduating class.
- [00:35:20.970]Again, they only need to meet one of those.
- [00:35:23.590]When it comes to our core course requirements.
- [00:35:25.820]That includes English, which is four units,
- [00:35:28.880]math, which is four units in that fourth year math
- [00:35:31.470]is typically what trips up a lot of our students.
- [00:35:34.260]And that fourth year math requirement
- [00:35:35.780]is going to build on algebra two
- [00:35:37.560]or advanced algebra knowledge.
- [00:35:40.250]Then we have social sciences
- [00:35:41.830]and that's going to be three units and natural sciences
- [00:35:45.080]that are three units.
- [00:35:45.913]And one of those has to be lab based.
- [00:35:48.230]And then we have world language,
- [00:35:49.900]which is two units,
- [00:35:50.950]and it has to be the same world language.
- [00:35:54.910]I also, we've gotten lots of questions about test optional,
- [00:35:58.840]test blind.
- [00:36:00.720]What does that all mean?
- [00:36:02.200]Well, the university of Nebraska is test optional.
- [00:36:06.530]What that means is that we can,
- [00:36:08.870]we've always been able to admit students
- [00:36:10.730]not without a test score,
- [00:36:12.500]but now we're able to actually award them scholarships
- [00:36:15.810]purely based off of their GPA alone.
- [00:36:19.140]So this is really exciting for a lot of our students,
- [00:36:21.820]especially because we know that sometimes
- [00:36:23.970]students just aren't as, don't perform as well on tests,
- [00:36:27.210]but are really great high achieving students
- [00:36:30.010]when it comes to their high school GPA.
- [00:36:32.560]So test optional means that's whatever student
- [00:36:36.160]does report their ACT or SAT score,
- [00:36:39.240]we'll still do a holistic review when we award them
- [00:36:42.560]academic scholarships.
- [00:36:44.350]But if they do not report an ACT,
- [00:36:46.900]then we will base it off of their GPA alone
- [00:36:49.350]in awarding those scholarships.
- [00:36:51.180]Do you have any questions about what test optional is?
- [00:36:53.110]Don't worry.
- [00:36:53.943]We got a question and answer section
- [00:36:55.043]and we'll be sure to make sure
- [00:36:56.400]we provide some additional clarity.
- [00:36:58.900]So in addition to our academic scholarships,
- [00:37:02.590]we also have some additional scholarship opportunities
- [00:37:05.270]and these are based off of students' stories
- [00:37:07.100]and their experiences and perspectives
- [00:37:08.750]because we really want to award money for students
- [00:37:12.130]that have, are able to reflect on their experiences
- [00:37:15.110]and that they want to share their story with us.
- [00:37:17.900]So these include our scholarship statement scholarships.
- [00:37:21.580]This is going to be a 500 word essay
- [00:37:24.090]where students are going to talk about their leadership
- [00:37:26.860]or diversity or any adversity that they faced.
- [00:37:30.170]And this is a very reflective essay.
- [00:37:32.320]And since it's 500 words,
- [00:37:34.070]make sure that they don't try to encompass
- [00:37:35.600]all of those different tiers.
- [00:37:37.800]They can really focus on one in particular.
- [00:37:40.520]Then we also have our leadership service
- [00:37:42.740]and diversity enhancement scholarships.
- [00:37:45.040]Students can apply for these different scholarship
- [00:37:47.500]opportunities, including the Davis Chambers,
- [00:37:50.180]the Native American Heritage Scholarship,
- [00:37:52.670]and also our multicultural engineering,
- [00:37:54.810]women in engineering.
- [00:37:56.620]And what they'll have to do is submit
- [00:37:58.280]the scholarship application,
- [00:37:59.620]the diversity enhancement scholarship application
- [00:38:01.820]through their my read.
- [00:38:03.410]The deadline for both of these scholarship opportunities
- [00:38:05.860]is February 1st.
- [00:38:07.350]It's also important to note that students
- [00:38:09.600]would also have to complete their FAFSA
- [00:38:11.868]time of February 1st to be considered for some of these
- [00:38:16.070]diversity enhancement scholarships.
- [00:38:18.910]When students are completing
- [00:38:20.740]the diversity enhancement scholarship application,
- [00:38:23.140]they'll answer a variety of essay prompts,
- [00:38:25.800]and they're also going to be 500 words per essay prompt.
- [00:38:29.410]And again,
- [00:38:30.243]it's talking about their experiences and their perspectives
- [00:38:32.750]and the ways that their community has shaped them
- [00:38:35.300]and also has impacted them.
- [00:38:38.760]All right, let's talk about some other aid opportunities,
- [00:38:42.180]Nebraska Promise.
- [00:38:44.020]So the Nebraska promise is a tuition commitment
- [00:38:47.350]here to Nebraska for students that have a family income
- [00:38:52.040]of $60,000 or less or apell grant eligible.
- [00:38:56.690]One thing that always trips up our students is
- [00:38:59.820]you're not going to be awarded the Nebraska Promise.
- [00:39:02.500]They're gonna be awarded a variety
- [00:39:04.160]of different aid opportunities
- [00:39:05.810]that add up to our tuition cost.
- [00:39:08.930]In order to be considered for the Nebraska Promise,
- [00:39:11.360]students simply just need to complete their FAFSA
- [00:39:14.540]and apply to the university by April 1st,
- [00:39:17.310]which is our priority deadline for our FAFSA.
- [00:39:22.240]Students also have to be a Nebraska residents
- [00:39:25.230]and they have to be a full-time student here at Nebraska
- [00:39:28.720]when they are enrolled.
- [00:39:30.220]And it has to be like that,
- [00:39:31.053]so it's 12 credit hours per semester.
- [00:39:33.130]And while they're a student here,
- [00:39:34.240]they have to maintain a 2.5 GPA.
- [00:39:37.840]This is an awesome opportunity on an awesome program
- [00:39:40.440]for a lot of our students
- [00:39:41.890]prior you might've heard of College Bound Nebraska,
- [00:39:45.130]but this is replacing that.
- [00:39:46.400]And we're making sure that we're able to widen those
- [00:39:48.920]different requirements to that family income of $60,000
- [00:39:52.060]or less so that we can impact more students
- [00:39:54.570]and provide more opportunities for students.
- [00:39:59.930]Another scholarship opportunity.
- [00:40:01.820]But also this is something I'm very passionate about.
- [00:40:04.720]It's also a college preparedness initiative.
- [00:40:07.460]So this is our RaiseMe program.
- [00:40:09.780]Our RaiseMe program is where students can start inputting
- [00:40:12.570]all of their academic achievements.
- [00:40:14.980]Also their personal achievements that we know
- [00:40:17.950]are going to be helpful for college going behaviors,
- [00:40:21.670]and they can earn micro scholarships
- [00:40:23.440]for each of these individual achievements.
- [00:40:26.790]So for in-state students,
- [00:40:29.330]they can earn up to $12,000,
- [00:40:31.740]for our out-of-state students,
- [00:40:33.020]they can earn up to $13,000.
- [00:40:36.600]For our eligibility requirements,
- [00:40:38.480]they would either have to be a part of one
- [00:40:39.940]of our partner schools, and we have about 17 of those
- [00:40:43.879]and they would also have out of a 3.25
- [00:40:46.950]GPA if they're an in-state students
- [00:40:49.650]or if their out of state student is a 3.4.
- [00:40:53.530]The other thing that I should mention
- [00:40:54.980]is for in-state students,
- [00:40:56.290]if they're not a member of a partner school,
- [00:40:58.280]then they would also have to demonstrate financial need.
- [00:41:01.310]So that means qualifying for free reduced lunch typically.
- [00:41:04.480]Again, all of these micro scholarship opportunities
- [00:41:07.720]are ranging from maybe having an A and of course,
- [00:41:11.030]or having a B, or taking an AP course,
- [00:41:14.370]even visiting campus students can get a $500 scholarship
- [00:41:17.920]for just visiting campus.
- [00:41:19.730]And then also if they do,
- [00:41:21.670]if they have a part-time job
- [00:41:23.180]in helping support their family,
- [00:41:25.270]they can also receive a micro scholarship
- [00:41:27.270]for that opportunity.
- [00:41:29.460]All, as I said, this starts from their ninth grade year.
- [00:41:32.620]And then it goes all the way up until December 1st
- [00:41:34.810]of their senior year.
- [00:41:36.210]So they can't input any of their achievements
- [00:41:38.050]after December 1st of their senior year.
- [00:41:40.300]But if you have seniors right now
- [00:41:42.870]that might be eligible for this program,
- [00:41:44.760]tell them to backlog all of their different achievements
- [00:41:47.380]starting from freshman year,
- [00:41:48.680]and they can get a lot of those micro scholarships
- [00:41:50.530]out of that.
- [00:41:51.530]Again, if you have any questions about this,
- [00:41:53.890]just reach out to me.
- [00:41:54.780]I'm always happy to help with RaiseMe.
- [00:41:57.710]All right so after talking about
- [00:41:59.870]all of those awesome different aid opportunities,
- [00:42:01.840]let's talk about some of our additional engagement
- [00:42:03.750]opportunities for your scholars this upcoming year.
- [00:42:06.390]So our mostly, our one that's coming up very shortly
- [00:42:09.990]is actually Spanish Visit Day.
- [00:42:11.580]So this will be on campus and students are able
- [00:42:14.710]to come on Saturday, September 18th,
- [00:42:17.010]and the whole entire visit is going to be conducted
- [00:42:20.080]in Spanish.
- [00:42:21.280]So if you have some Spanish speaking students
- [00:42:22.937]and Spanish speaking families
- [00:42:24.830]and their parents want to be an active participant
- [00:42:27.110]in their college selection process,
- [00:42:29.230]this is a great opportunity for them.
- [00:42:31.730]Registration is still open and we are actually
- [00:42:33.900]providing transportation from Omaha South High School.
- [00:42:38.150]So if you have, if you're in Omaha area,
- [00:42:41.310]this would be a great opportunity to tell them
- [00:42:42.790]that we'll even transport them here to the university.
- [00:42:46.040]We also do have our college success showcase coming up,
- [00:42:51.100]and it is on campus.
- [00:42:53.120]It is for our high school seniors,
- [00:42:54.750]because we know that our high schools,
- [00:42:56.770]our current high school seniors,
- [00:42:57.960]they didn't have a lot of opportunities to visit campuses.
- [00:43:01.490]College success showcase is going to be very similar
- [00:43:04.100]programming to our diversity symposium
- [00:43:06.300]if you're familiar with those,
- [00:43:08.620]but we aren't able to offer diversity symposium
- [00:43:11.790]in the same format that we typically do
- [00:43:13.610]just because of COVID-19 capacity restrictions.
- [00:43:17.030]So we wanted to still be able to provide a opportunity
- [00:43:20.550]for students to come and to increase access to the college,
- [00:43:25.750]to college admissions process.
- [00:43:28.300]So the dates for our college success showcase
- [00:43:31.140]are October 6th and October 12th,
- [00:43:33.430]and we will have transportation for these dates in Omaha
- [00:43:37.210]and Grand Islands.
- [00:43:38.270]And we do also for one of the dates have transportation
- [00:43:40.810]in Lincoln.
- [00:43:42.320]So this is another great opportunity.
- [00:43:44.220]The last one that I really want to talk about
- [00:43:46.670]is our virtual staff appointments,
- [00:43:49.150]meaning we offer one-to-one virtual sessions
- [00:43:52.920]with your students.
- [00:43:53.960]So students can log onto our website
- [00:43:56.050]and they can request to have a one-to-one session
- [00:43:59.290]with their recruitment specialist for their high school,
- [00:44:02.020]and they can get that individualized attention
- [00:44:04.050]and get all of their questions answered.
- [00:44:06.080]I know when I did these last year,
- [00:44:08.180]I had so many students ask me questions
- [00:44:09.800]about how to complete their application
- [00:44:11.760]and they would share their screen with me
- [00:44:13.290]and we'd be able to work on their application together.
- [00:44:15.900]We could work on their scholarship statement as well.
- [00:44:18.870]It's again, really great
- [00:44:20.160]to have the individualized attention
- [00:44:21.650]and also a representative from the university
- [00:44:24.320]that is familiar with the student's high school,
- [00:44:26.540]but then also about the whole entire admissions
- [00:44:29.160]process to help them through that.
- [00:44:32.300]All right.
- [00:44:33.133]So since I'm talking about those virtual appointments,
- [00:44:35.450]we have to talk about some of our amazing staff members
- [00:44:37.830]and our team members here in the office of admissions.
- [00:44:40.220]So we, as I mentioned,
- [00:44:41.570]we have a lot of recruitment specialists
- [00:44:43.080]that are based on specific areas.
- [00:44:44.700]So here you're able to see our two Omaha reps
- [00:44:47.420]and also our Lincoln rep.
- [00:44:49.080]So please feel free to go ahead and take a screenshot
- [00:44:51.510]so that you can have their contact information
- [00:44:54.660]in case you're in one of those areas.
- [00:44:56.910]But beyond that, we also have representation
- [00:44:59.280]in our Northeast, Southeast and Tri-Cities areas,
- [00:45:05.350]Nebraska transports.
- [00:45:07.460]So I don't really know all the county names,
- [00:45:10.590]but if I had a map, I can show you exactly what those are
- [00:45:14.186](laughs)
- [00:45:15.130]beyond that we also have reps in our panhandle
- [00:45:19.330]and west-central areas,
- [00:45:20.900]and then I am actually the contact
- [00:45:22.680]for community-based organizations.
- [00:45:25.000]So if you need any help,
- [00:45:26.120]and if you're one of our
- [00:45:26.953]community based organizations partners,
- [00:45:28.950]please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
- [00:45:30.550]I'm always happy to help.
- [00:45:32.700]All right, with that, thank you for joining us.
- [00:45:37.290]Thank you, CJ so much for all that information.
- [00:45:40.290]We understand that the lot of information
- [00:45:42.640]and a short amount of time or getting about 40 minutes,
- [00:45:46.040]45 minutes.
- [00:45:46.873]So at this point in time, if you have any questions,
- [00:45:50.370]feel free if you want to unmute yourself,
- [00:45:52.340]you can definitely ask those questions verbally.
- [00:45:55.060]We would love for you to just hear your voice,
- [00:45:58.000]but if you also want to ask them to chat,
- [00:45:59.700]we do have staff members who are managing our staff,
- [00:46:02.000]our chat as well.
- [00:46:04.210]If you want to chat individuals who spoke today
- [00:46:06.880]to you have questions about just one thing,
- [00:46:09.030]feel free to ask those questions as well.
- [00:46:11.930]If you feel like you're good,
- [00:46:13.150]you're like, yep this filled my bucket today.
- [00:46:14.960]Thank you so much.
- [00:46:16.530]We will send out a follow-up email.
- [00:46:18.220]We are recording this session.
- [00:46:19.640]So we will also send the recording.
- [00:46:21.110]So if you got in late, or if you miss something,
- [00:46:24.590]it's like, I misheard them,
- [00:46:25.830]but I don't have time to ask questions.
- [00:46:27.350]I got to go to my next appointment meeting.
- [00:46:29.510]We'll send out a recording for everyone who's in attendance,
- [00:46:32.560]as well as anyone who didn't show up today
- [00:46:34.800]for your convenience as well,
- [00:46:36.160]but I'm going to leave it open to the room.
- [00:46:38.730]If you all have any questions regarding anything
- [00:46:41.410]that we spoke about or anything that we didn't get
- [00:46:42.930]talk about that you'd like to have an answer to today.
- [00:47:00.690]Alrighty,
- [00:47:12.950]Kayla, we can hear.
- [00:47:20.300]We might have a connection issue, but anyways,
- [00:47:23.150]so we won't technically turn away our junior students.
- [00:47:28.380]We obviously want to be able to provide
- [00:47:30.490]as many opportunities as possible.
- [00:47:45.170]Seniors can come on campus and get a lot of individualized
- [00:47:48.410]attention with a campus host that has a current students,
- [00:47:51.980]and then also even have an academic appointment
- [00:47:54.120]with their intended academic program.
- [00:47:56.750]But if you do have some juniors
- [00:47:58.600]and they're really, really, really wanting to come,
- [00:48:00.380]or if they're like graduating early
- [00:48:01.830]and considering graduating early,
- [00:48:04.030]we of course would love to invite them.
- [00:48:19.880]We can't hear what she was saying.
- [00:48:21.340]I know what you really have created the program for seniors,
- [00:48:22.550]but if you do have any juniors
- [00:48:24.270]who really just want to come to campus,
- [00:48:25.950]we are hosting experiences for the whole entire semester
- [00:48:29.520]for our junior students,
- [00:48:30.370]sophomore, first year students as well too.
- [00:48:32.820]So check out our webpage admissions.unl.edu/visit
- [00:48:38.140]has all of his opportunities right there.
