- [00:00:05.864]So welcome to
- [00:00:06.649]Stretching Your Strengths
- [00:00:07.617]in CEHS.
- [00:00:08.527]I'm Paul Springer, the
- [00:00:09.869]Associate Dean for
- [00:00:10.818]Student Success
- [00:00:11.635]in the college.
- [00:00:13.190]Today, we are going to be meeting
- [00:00:14.538]with Claire Kubicek,
- [00:00:15.860]who is a senior in our college,
- [00:00:17.660]and we'll be giving us some tips and
- [00:00:19.401]ideas about how to be successful
- [00:00:21.471]as a freshmen student.
- [00:00:23.699]In courses, such as
- [00:00:25.334]large class classrooms,
- [00:00:27.533]or labs,
- [00:00:28.993]or online virtual classes.
- [00:00:31.121]So thanks for
- [00:00:31.904]joining us today, Claire.
- [00:00:33.470]Yeah, thanks for having me.
- [00:00:34.633]I'm excited to be here.
- [00:00:36.090]So, Claire, you are a senior.
- [00:00:37.520]So, you have successfully navigated
- [00:00:39.943]the last three years at UNL.
- [00:00:41.943]So,
- [00:00:42.778]what are some tips you would
- [00:00:44.344]give to a freshman student who,
- [00:00:47.203]is enrolled in their
- [00:00:48.220]first large class,
- [00:00:49.849]maybe 300 students.
- [00:00:51.860]Yeah, that can be pretty
- [00:00:52.865]overwhelming as a freshman.
- [00:00:54.650]I know it was for me cause I
- [00:00:55.883]grew up in a very small town.
- [00:00:57.170]So,
- [00:00:57.821]my first big lecture was a little bit
- [00:00:59.237]overwhelming that first day of classes.
- [00:01:01.010]But,
- [00:01:01.970]some tips that I would give to some
- [00:01:04.000]freshmen would be, sit towards the front.
- [00:01:05.870]It can get really distracting,
- [00:01:07.049]if you try to sit in the back.
- [00:01:08.150]There's so many students
- [00:01:09.225]doing so many things on their
- [00:01:10.703]laptops and taking notes.
- [00:01:12.260]Those are easy distractions that
- [00:01:13.693]you can easily avoid as well.
- [00:01:16.100]So sitting towards the front is one
- [00:01:17.934]of my best tips that I have.
- [00:01:19.889]As well as,
- [00:01:20.532]finding someone in your class that
- [00:01:21.860]you can study with and then just
- [00:01:23.300]troubleshoot with them if
- [00:01:24.309]you have any questions.
- [00:01:25.124]And
- [00:01:25.624]teaching others is one
- [00:01:26.854]of the best ways to learn
- [00:01:27.860]the material yourself as well.
- [00:01:29.780]I think my last tip would be to really
- [00:01:31.306]utilize the campus resources.
- [00:01:33.005]Such as the Math Center
- [00:01:34.355]the Writing Center.
- [00:01:35.467]I think there's
- [00:01:36.076]a Chemistry Center as well.
- [00:01:37.340]I went to all of those
- [00:01:39.560]when I was an underclassmen and
- [00:01:40.707]still utilize those today as a senior.
- [00:01:42.620]So,
- [00:01:43.603]I think those are really
- [00:01:44.404]helpful resources as well.
- [00:01:46.000]So,
- [00:01:46.662]let's shift gears.
- [00:01:47.625]Like,
- [00:01:48.129]what if it's a virtual
- [00:01:49.120]online class?
- [00:01:50.750]Like, how are you successful
- [00:01:52.129]in that avenue?
- [00:01:53.510]One thing I really like to do
- [00:01:54.750]for virtual classes is
- [00:01:56.456]make sure I have everything
- [00:01:57.440]written out in my planner
- [00:01:58.576]or really utilize that
- [00:02:00.093]calendar feature in Canvas.
- [00:02:01.880]That way I'm staying on top of all
- [00:02:03.578]my assignments and assigned readings,
- [00:02:05.120]all those things.
- [00:02:05.941]So I don't miss anything.
- [00:02:06.840]And then
- [00:02:07.823]you'll be well aware of when you
- [00:02:08.828]have an exam coming up as well.
- [00:02:10.000]So, you know,
- [00:02:10.640]when to start studying for those and just
- [00:02:12.641]make sure you're still reaching out to
- [00:02:14.420]your professors and TAs for all of those,
- [00:02:16.940]they're still holding office
- [00:02:18.191]hours on zoom, which is great.
- [00:02:20.090]And they're still there to help you,
- [00:02:21.570]even if it is a virtual class.
- [00:02:23.660]Yeah. It is kind of intimidating
- [00:02:25.202]to reach out to a professor.
- [00:02:26.570]What have been your experiences
- [00:02:28.069]when you've done that?
- [00:02:29.210]Yeah. Every time I've
- [00:02:30.349]reached out to a professor,
- [00:02:31.340]a TA they've been so welcoming and so
- [00:02:33.361]helpful and it's just been really great
- [00:02:35.510]and beneficial. I haven't had
- [00:02:37.055]a bad experience with anyone.
- [00:02:38.798]Oh, that's really great. So, you know,
- [00:02:41.150]when you transitioned from an online
- [00:02:42.934]and maybe you go in a lab like for
- [00:02:44.630]chemistry or something,
- [00:02:46.373]some other course like that,
- [00:02:47.810]how would you suggest to students,
- [00:02:50.060]what do they need to do
- [00:02:50.956]differently to be successful?
- [00:02:53.000]Yeah, for sure.
- [00:02:53.712]I would really recommend reading your
- [00:02:55.272]lab manuals prior to getting to your lab.
- [00:02:57.830]That will just kind of help, you know
- [00:02:59.620]the material a little bit better
- [00:03:00.920]and prepare you for that lab.
- [00:03:02.080]You have coming up as well as make sure
- [00:03:04.460]you're knowing when those TA hours are.
- [00:03:07.370]If you have questions
- [00:03:07.931]about your lab report,
- [00:03:09.250]they can be so helpful and are happy
- [00:03:11.524]to answer any questions you may have.
- [00:03:13.630]And so those are some of
- [00:03:14.517]my best tips for a lab.
- [00:03:16.410]I like your tips about reaching out
- [00:03:18.000]to your TAs and your faculty as well,
- [00:03:20.970]because really you aren't,
- [00:03:22.994]you shouldn't do this alone.
- [00:03:25.440]You have faculty and TAs who
- [00:03:27.605]want you to be successful.
- [00:03:29.310]And especially for students who
- [00:03:30.560]came from really small towns.
- [00:03:33.204]That may seem a little
- [00:03:34.188]intimidating coming to UNL.
- [00:03:36.795]So thanks a lot, Claire.
- [00:03:37.830]I really appreciate it.
- [00:03:39.026]Yeah, for sure.
