- [00:00:10.430]Hello, Lincoln children. I am Ester Hango,
- [00:00:14.660]And I am a 2021 Mandela, Washington Fellow.
- [00:00:19.280]I work as an environmental educator in Ohangwena region in Namibia.
- [00:00:24.936]Part of my work, I do community education.
- [00:00:29.010]I go out to the community and schools to educate people on
- [00:00:33.420]environmental issues that affect our daily lives.
- [00:00:38.440]Today,
- [00:00:39.479]I am at Usko Nghaamwa Special School.
- [00:00:43.110]Usko Nghaamwa is a special school because
- [00:00:45.670]it accommodates children with
- [00:00:48.320]hearing impaired.
- [00:00:50.410]We have about hundreds residents in this school.
- [00:00:55.100]And with me today is Ms. Tracia.
- [00:00:59.814]Ms. Tracia is a pre-primary teacher.
- [00:01:03.618]She teaches children
- [00:01:04.891]at the pre-primary level.
- [00:01:06.894]And she's also part of the
- [00:01:09.034]school environmental club.
- [00:01:11.290]Ms. Tracia will take you through various activites that we do at this school that
- [00:01:17.230]help supplement the former school curriculum.
- [00:01:22.120]It's very unfortunate that we do not have children around because
- [00:01:27.760]all the schools in the country are closed due to covid.
- [00:01:31.080]They will only open during August.
- [00:01:35.037]So today it's only me and Ms. Tracia.
- [00:01:38.900]that would take you through the school and our activities.
- [00:01:46.087]Here's
- [00:01:46.931]the Usko Nghaamwa Special School Garden.
- [00:01:49.837]Ms. Tracia will take you
- [00:01:51.538]through the garden.
- [00:01:52.591]and tell you
- [00:01:53.814]what does the garden do
- [00:01:55.324]in the children's education?
- [00:02:36.364]Ms. Tracia was simply telling you that
- [00:02:38.767]they grow fruit and vegetables
- [00:02:41.047]in their garden.
- [00:02:45.230]The main purpose of the garden is that
- [00:02:47.580]they produce fruits and vegetables
- [00:02:50.564]to sell to their community
- [00:02:52.103]and generate income.
- [00:02:53.833]And part of the food that they produce
- [00:02:56.258]also supplements the school feeding program.
- [00:02:59.810]Because
- [00:03:00.560]some students stay in the hostels.
- [00:03:03.460]So It is very important that
- [00:03:05.128]they improve their nutrition
- [00:03:06.668]through this garden.
- [00:03:18.300]Part of our awareness program
- [00:03:20.569]is a painting of the school wall.
- [00:03:23.130]Ms. Tracia will take you
- [00:03:24.545]through the messages that
- [00:03:26.393]are painted on this wall.
- [00:03:46.740]She was simply telling you that they have painted the wall with various
- [00:03:50.970]environmental messages.
- [00:03:52.933]The message is mainly to remind
- [00:03:55.470]the students of their responsibility to take care of the environment.
- [00:04:00.160]So our pictures portray:
- [00:04:03.740]How do we take care of available resources to sustain our environment?
- [00:04:41.880]Welcome to another section for our environmental education program
- [00:04:46.710]at the school.
- [00:04:47.766]Ms. Tracia will explain to you what is all
- [00:04:51.788]about our recycling project.
- [00:05:06.040]This is the recycling project part.
- [00:05:09.079]We teach children
- [00:05:10.620]how to keep the environment clean.
- [00:05:13.270]For example, here
- [00:05:14.686]we have a windmill that is made out of recycled material.
- [00:05:19.150]This windmill is used as a tool to help
- [00:05:24.070]children understand
- [00:05:25.350]some of the facts that they're learning.
- [00:05:28.270]For example, subjects like geography,
- [00:05:30.490]where they have to explain about the use of the windmill.
- [00:05:47.960]It's very, very
- [00:05:49.080]enjoyable to work with different learners because they
- [00:05:52.970]adapt to every environment.
- [00:05:56.760]But we are faced
- [00:05:57.902]with a lot of challenges in our learning environment.
- [00:06:00.974]For example,
- [00:06:02.077]here we are standing by the school hostel.
- [00:06:05.570]Ms. Tracia will tell you
- [00:06:07.527]what are the challenges that
- [00:06:09.050]this hostel is having
- [00:06:10.553]on the children's education?
- [00:07:06.160]Okay. She was simply explaining that
- [00:07:08.311]this is also an accommodation
- [00:07:10.290]that has a lot of challenges.
- [00:07:12.000]For example, if you see this dormitory,
- [00:07:14.190]it accommodates about 36 children in one place.
- [00:07:18.183]They sleep in one place,
- [00:07:19.350]36 of them.
- [00:07:21.040]So even though we are enjoying the goodness of the environment,
- [00:07:25.420]we are living with difficulty.
- [00:07:27.650]but thanks to our mentors,
- [00:07:31.063]who make our learning environment
- [00:07:32.879]very enjoyable.
- [00:07:34.336]Thank you.
