- [00:00:13.910]My name
- [00:00:14.270]is Brooke and I work with Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom.
- [00:00:17.870]How many of you have heard of the word agriculture before? Agriculture is
- [00:00:22.850]the science of growing crops and raising livestock. Crops are plants that farmers
- [00:00:26.900]grow for us to eat or for animals to eat. And livestock are farming animals.
- [00:00:31.850]How many of you think you have used something from agriculture already today?
- [00:00:37.970]How many of you got dressed for the day? Ate breakfast, tied your shoes,
- [00:00:42.680]maybe rode in a car or on a school bus to school today?
- [00:00:46.670]If you've used something to color within your classrooms or around your homes
- [00:00:51.500]today, you have used something from agriculture.
- [00:00:53.990]We use agriculture from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed each and
- [00:00:57.890]every day, multiple times a day.
- [00:01:00.620]What would we do if we didn't have farmers and ranchers to help us grow these
- [00:01:04.730]plants and raise these farm animals?
- [00:01:07.880]We wouldn't have access to the food that we need to survive the food for our
- [00:01:12.530]animals or the byproducts or the fuels that we use in our everyday
- [00:01:17.300]lives. Today.
- [00:01:18.170]I'm going to share some careers that you could potentially have in agriculture.
- [00:01:22.670]How many of you have thought about what you want to be when you grow up?
- [00:01:26.660]Maybe it's a job in math, science, social studies,
- [00:01:30.980]language arts, or something along those lines. All of these careers
- [00:01:35.660]open the doors to potentially working with agriculture and you don't have to
- [00:01:40.340]live or work on a farm to be able to do that.
- [00:01:43.340]So as a career that I chose to do, I decided to go to school to be
- [00:01:48.040]a science teacher and agricultural science teacher.
- [00:01:50.690]So I did get a degree in agricultural science for an agricultural
- [00:01:55.670]science degree.
- [00:01:56.750]And so I get to provide lessons to kids that relate to agriculture,
- [00:02:00.620]sharing new skills and ideas of what farmers and ranchers can do on their farms.
- [00:02:05.810]But we have a lot of other careers that we can do as well.
- [00:02:09.560]So maybe you've heard of a veterinarian. What does a veterinarian do?
- [00:02:14.450]A veterinarian gets to provide health care for our farm animals and other
- [00:02:19.070]animals in our lives.
- [00:02:20.360]They get to diagnose and treat problems and or injuries on the farm to
- [00:02:25.250]help those animals get better.
- [00:02:28.280]Maybe you've thought of a career in science.
- [00:02:31.190]So a crop scientists would be another option.
- [00:02:33.950]Their job is to classify organisms based on their characteristics,
- [00:02:38.030]research crop management methods and analyze biological samples.
- [00:02:42.440]So they help the farmers improve their crops on their farms.
- [00:02:47.600]Maybe you really liked the idea of learning how to operate and drive equipment.
- [00:02:51.530]So you could become an equipment operator.
- [00:02:54.410]You can drive and control farm equipment like tractors, plows,
- [00:02:58.040]combines, and tillers. You have to know how to maintain the equipment
- [00:03:02.050]so it's ready to be used for planting and harvest and inspect the equipment to
- [00:03:06.220]determine if there's a condition or maintenance that needs to happen on that
- [00:03:10.360]type of machine.
- [00:03:14.020]Another career in agriculture is a pesticide applicator.
- [00:03:17.320]Their job is to inspect the crops and determine if treatment needs to
- [00:03:21.940]happen. So they prepare chemicals for applications,
- [00:03:25.420]apply chemicals to farm crops,
- [00:03:27.730]to kill weeds or other insects that could be on the farm harming those crops.
- [00:03:32.650]A crop applicator
- [00:03:33.940]or a pesticide applicator has to have the skills and training to be able to use
- [00:03:38.530]these types of applications on the farm.
- [00:03:41.200]So you could have a variety of different careers that require different levels
- [00:03:45.490]of education.
- [00:03:46.480]So maybe it's a bachelor's of science degree or a doctor's like a
- [00:03:50.890]veterinarian requires a doctoral degree. There's a lot of education
- [00:03:55.680]variations that you could choose from.
- [00:03:59.250]You could also become a livestock hauler.
- [00:04:01.200]So their job is to transport livestock from the farm to the market.
- [00:04:05.070]They have to ensure that those animals are safe along the way and provide any
- [00:04:08.850]care to those animals that they may need.
- [00:04:12.750]Another career would be maybe a feed mill operator.
- [00:04:15.780]Their job is to lead the process of storing,
- [00:04:18.480]mixing and delivering feed for their cattle hogs or other livestock
- [00:04:23.250]animals,
- [00:04:23.910]and ensure that the mill is kept clean and then they can help load the feed into
- [00:04:28.740]trucks or trailers to transport that feed.
- [00:04:33.450]Have you ever thought about what might be on the inside of that tractor for
- [00:04:37.230]technology?
- [00:04:38.730]A lot of farmers today use GPS technology in their tractors.
- [00:04:42.450]So somebody had to design that GPS technology for those farmers to use.
- [00:04:47.550]So maybe you were a software developer helping that farmer design that piece of
- [00:04:52.170]equipment. So they're going to design the equipment,
- [00:04:54.900]but you need somebody who maybe,
- [00:04:56.610]will be a graphic designer to design what the outlook of that program is
- [00:05:01.410]going to look like. So you could have a career in designing.
- [00:05:07.350]Or maybe you're the engineer designing and fixing a problem to help farmers
- [00:05:11.610]solve an issue on their farm.
- [00:05:13.470]So they have to communicate technical information to suppliers,
- [00:05:17.490]contractors, and regulatory agencies to help,
- [00:05:21.780]investigate what's kind of the problem on the farm to fix that.
- [00:05:25.500]So you could become an engineer.
- [00:05:28.230]Maybe you like to work with money and farmers rely on accountants
- [00:05:33.270]and businessmen in the financial industry to help them make decisions on their
- [00:05:37.800]farm.
- [00:05:38.460]So an accountant makes recommendations on spending and saving,
- [00:05:42.990]preparing budgets to help keep track of their spending on their farms and to
- [00:05:47.010]analyze their profits and losses,
- [00:05:48.990]to ensure that the farmer can come back and farm again the next year.
- [00:05:52.530]So an accountant is another career. If you like working with the government,
- [00:05:57.290]maybe you've heard of a lobbyist befor. They get to help make
- [00:06:01.790]government officials hear the voice of agriculture.
- [00:06:05.720]So they help influence policy development and build relationships with elected
- [00:06:10.670]officials. So maybe they're working with your state senators. Or
- [00:06:15.530]on the federal side,
- [00:06:17.090]they're working in Washington DC to help pass rules and regulations that relate
- [00:06:21.230]to the farming NS environment in the farming industry.
- [00:06:26.540]This is my friend Bryce. He is a broadcaster.
- [00:06:29.510]And so he works for KRVN and he gets to gather information and report
- [00:06:34.010]stories about agriculture.
- [00:06:36.590]So he reports on news on the radio, the television.
- [00:06:40.670]He gets to interview people in the studio and on location to share some of
- [00:06:45.470]those stories of those farmers and ranchers. And this is my friend clay,
- [00:06:50.330]he's an auctioneer.
- [00:06:51.800]So he gets to help sell cattle and livestock at
- [00:06:56.660]different public auctions.
- [00:06:59.330]He gets to spot and build or take bids from the audience members and declare
- [00:07:04.070]winners of animals and direct them to the purchase site.
- [00:07:07.370]So if you like that kind of work with people and work with animals and other
- [00:07:11.660]things like that,
- [00:07:12.290]you could be an auctioneer and help those farmers sell their livestock
- [00:07:16.760]animals to the market. And this one, right,
- [00:07:20.550]here's a food scientist.
- [00:07:21.820]So maybe you really enjoy food and kind of what that looks like.
- [00:07:24.910]And you want to do more research and data.
- [00:07:27.250]They get to work to help to make sure that the food we eat is safe for us to do
- [00:07:31.990]so. So they're doing
- [00:07:33.970]research on the farms and ways to help improve the food products that we
- [00:07:38.740]can eat. And they do a lot of research and data to help us do that.
- [00:07:43.150]So they are a food scientist. This one's kind of fun,
- [00:07:46.840]a flavor technologist.
- [00:07:48.520]I like to think of this one is if you like to drink chocolate milk,
- [00:07:51.760]there could be different flavors of chocolate milk.
- [00:07:54.760]Their job is to modify that flavor,
- [00:07:57.280]to get the best product that we can purchase in the grocery store.
- [00:08:01.390]So they get to collect samples and make different,
- [00:08:05.080]flavors for different food products that we enjoy. So overall,
- [00:08:09.280]we looked at several different types of careers today and all of these careers
- [00:08:13.630]fall into the categories of math, social studies, science, language, arts,
- [00:08:18.790]design.
- [00:08:20.620]All of those different careers in those types of education that
- [00:08:25.600]we could have someday.
- [00:08:26.950]And you don't have to live or work on a farm to have a career and help a farmer
- [00:08:31.180]or rancher out each year. And in the United States,
- [00:08:34.930]there are over 57,000 job openings in agriculture alone.
- [00:08:39.520]So you can find your fit to help farmers grow their food,
- [00:08:43.840]raise their livestock, help them grow products,
- [00:08:47.140]to create those byproducts that we use each and every day and help to
- [00:08:52.030]those farmers create and grow those crops for fuel in our vehicles.
