- [00:00:05.520]Dear Nebraska students, staff, faculty, alums, friends,
- [00:00:10.440]and our entire United Inclusive Excellence community,
- [00:00:13.820]greetings from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion
- [00:00:16.520]and the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:18.440]where I have the privilege of serving
- [00:00:20.110]as the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion.
- [00:00:23.320]In recognition of the beginning of this academic year,
- [00:00:26.690]let me begin by recognizing that we sit on past,
- [00:00:29.630]present, and future homelands
- [00:00:31.660]of First Nations and Native American tribes.
- [00:00:34.750]I encourage all of us to learn more about the land,
- [00:00:38.510]the native land, where you sit today.
- [00:00:41.520]You may learn more about those nations and tribes
- [00:00:43.770]in Nebraska on our website at diversity.unl.edu.
- [00:00:49.590]As we began this school year,
- [00:00:51.250]I thought I'd share a quote from Chief Si'ahl,
- [00:00:54.340]also known as Chief Seattle of the Duwamish tribe.
- [00:00:57.900]Quote, "when you know who you are,
- [00:01:00.727]"when your mission is clear
- [00:01:02.537]"and you burn within a fire of unbreakable wheel,
- [00:01:05.827]"no code can touch your hearts,
- [00:01:07.937]"no deluge can deepen your purpose.
- [00:01:10.347]"You know that you are alive."
- [00:01:13.180]This quote so eloquently and simply reminds us
- [00:01:15.600]of the importance of having purpose,
- [00:01:17.860]knowing your history and its connection to self,
- [00:01:20.520]and celebrating life.
- [00:01:23.290]In the midst of racism, xenophobia, transphobia,
- [00:01:27.240]ableism, lack of mental health awareness,
- [00:01:30.260]and all actions and attitudes that threaten our ability
- [00:01:33.050]to gain access, participate fully, and thrive,
- [00:01:37.060]our mission is clear.
- [00:01:38.920]It's inclusive excellence.
- [00:01:41.010]We enter into this new academic cycle
- [00:01:43.260]with the clear sense
- [00:01:44.360]of making inclusive excellence a priority.
- [00:01:47.550]This means strengthening our foundation
- [00:01:49.430]to advance diversity, inclusion and equity in all its forms.
- [00:01:54.970]The Office Of Diversity and Inclusion
- [00:01:56.390]has activated our internal strategic planning,
- [00:01:59.450]which will connect
- [00:02:00.440]to the University's end 2025 strategic plan,
- [00:02:03.660]while also identifying the necessary programs,
- [00:02:07.020]operations, and initiatives that position the office
- [00:02:10.060]to lead and support the institution.
- [00:02:13.580]A mission of inclusive excellence means we fully embrace
- [00:02:17.010]and champion UNL's journey on anti-racism and racial equity.
- [00:02:21.650]We formulate resources and structures
- [00:02:23.690]that ensure inclusive excellence,
- [00:02:25.440]reflects a commitment to reduce
- [00:02:27.690]and eliminate barriers to greater racial equity,
- [00:02:30.510]and addresses actions and systems that perpetuate racism.
- [00:02:35.230]It means we continuously challenge what we know,
- [00:02:38.340]always find opportunities to learn, and implement solutions
- [00:02:41.960]that make our communities more inclusive and equitable,
- [00:02:45.550]especially in places
- [00:02:46.620]where we have direct connection or influence.
- [00:02:49.810]So, let's move together with the mission
- [00:02:52.530]towards inclusive excellence, anti-racism, and equity.
- [00:02:57.510]Our United Inclusive Excellence newsletter provides
- [00:02:59.750]and highlights people, research, creative activity,
- [00:03:03.170]and actions that reflect this inclusive excellence mission.
- [00:03:07.770]Enjoy this month's newsletter.
- [00:03:09.530]Be safe, be well, and we look forward to seeing you
- [00:03:13.370]during our central office and Oasis open houses
- [00:03:16.170]on September 8th.
- [00:03:17.610]Go Big Red!
