- [00:00:00.990]Welcome to the Communication Design Courses
- [00:00:03.010]here at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:00:05.990]Over this course sequence,
- [00:00:07.140]you will broaden your knowledge base through a curriculum
- [00:00:09.410]of alternating theory and practice.
- [00:00:11.640]These modules are a multi-disciplinary approach
- [00:00:14.010]that encourages students to use the technology
- [00:00:16.240]in your daily life to solve real-world problems.
- [00:00:20.070]You will gain real-world content development experience
- [00:00:22.730]while working with instructors
- [00:00:24.010]to produce engaging and innovative stories.
- [00:00:26.860]This course establishes a creative and technical foundation
- [00:00:29.824]to prepare you for an ever-changing media environment.
- [00:00:33.450]However, don't just take our word for it.
- [00:00:35.720]Past Communication Design students
- [00:00:37.400]share how these courses helped them
- [00:00:38.910]with their later classes in the college,
- [00:00:40.590]and put them on the road to success
- [00:00:42.180]for their future careers.
- [00:00:43.860]The JOMC 130 classes, which is 130 through 134,
- [00:00:48.450]and you kind of go through them;
- [00:00:50.210]they're short, they're self-ran.
- [00:00:52.270]You do some projects for them.
- [00:00:53.820]And I remember my friends telling me about them
- [00:00:55.187]and they're like, "Oh yeah, yeah, those classes."
- [00:00:57.970]But those classes have taught me so much
- [00:01:01.120]about Adobe software, about how to be a better photographer,
- [00:01:04.170]how to capture the shots through videography,
- [00:01:06.480]how to record in a studio, how to work with audio.
- [00:01:10.990]I could go on and on about those classes.
- [00:01:13.510]I think the 130 classes were very beneficial
- [00:01:16.950]in my learning.
- [00:01:19.450]I know a lot of people
- [00:01:20.283]don't take them as serious as they should,
- [00:01:22.710]but I really took all those projects to heart
- [00:01:25.510]and I went above and beyond on each and every one of them.
- [00:01:28.617]And I definitely grew because of it;
- [00:01:30.400]I wasn't just wasting my time
- [00:01:33.350]trying to get a B on it or something.
- [00:01:37.170]I didn't even care about the grade, to be honest.
- [00:01:39.590]I just wanted to create something new I'd never done.
- [00:01:42.680]The classes that I've taken in the journalism college
- [00:01:46.230]that I would say have impacted advertising
- [00:01:50.650]on more so the creative side as well
- [00:01:52.630]are the 130 JOMC classes,
- [00:01:55.440]such as when we had to make different videos,
- [00:01:59.440]we had to code websites,
- [00:02:02.450]we had to do a lot of stuff
- [00:02:03.530]on Digital Design and Illustrator.
- [00:02:05.370]I feel like that more so helped me
- [00:02:08.130]to become the creative person I am today.
- [00:02:11.660]With the photography lesson in that class,
- [00:02:15.580]learning how to take pictures
- [00:02:16.930]and how to frame them correctly,
- [00:02:19.070]they really helped me figure out
- [00:02:20.290]what photos for social media are supposed to look like,
- [00:02:23.570]and to make sure that they fit my client's image.
- [00:02:26.830]What I've also learned
- [00:02:28.630]from the video assignment of that class,
- [00:02:31.940]I was able to kind of input some ideas
- [00:02:33.990]for how to get to your IGTV when we were filming that.
- [00:02:37.820]You don't really realize that what you're learning in class,
- [00:02:41.030]you were actually going to be
- [00:02:41.900]implementing that into your work,
- [00:02:43.610]and while you are implementing it,
- [00:02:45.250]you don't really think about,
- [00:02:46.083]"Oh yeah, that's what I did in this class.
- [00:02:48.090]I can perfectly remember why I'm doing this."
- [00:02:51.070]Out in the real world,
- [00:02:52.000]you're not going to be told how to do things.
- [00:02:54.480]Our future employers will just expect it to get done
- [00:02:57.400]and we'll need to teach ourselves.
- [00:02:59.470]Independent study is extremely important
- [00:03:01.710]in the content creation world
- [00:03:03.370]because technology and softwares are constantly evolving
- [00:03:06.730]and there's not gonna be an exact tutorial
- [00:03:08.680]for all the innovative ideas we come up with.
- [00:03:12.700]I learned this mainly from the Viscom classes.
- [00:03:16.570]The communication design courses
- [00:03:18.330]are a series of classes
- [00:03:19.520]to expose students to the Adobe Creative Cloud software
- [00:03:22.390]and the technology they will use during their time
- [00:03:24.550]here at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:03:27.730]Each course is designed to help you
- [00:03:29.500]gain the skills you'll need for your future career.
- [00:03:31.850]Let's break down the courses and what we cover in each one.
- [00:03:36.600]Introduction to Design Thinking is an eight-week course
- [00:03:39.290]covering technology, storytelling,
- [00:03:41.110]and design thinking, or problem solving.
- [00:03:43.370]This course covers the big ideas present,
- [00:03:45.190]not just in these classes,
- [00:03:46.510]but throughout the entire college.
- [00:03:50.620]JOMC 131 and 132 are your core modules.
- [00:03:54.610]They cover seven key areas:
- [00:03:56.160]typography, layout, photo, audio, video, mobile, and web
- [00:04:01.240]that the college faculty determined
- [00:04:02.910]are essential skills for the different majors.
- [00:04:05.350]The modules you complete
- [00:04:06.820]will be different based on your major.
- [00:04:09.090]The module assignments are tailored
- [00:04:10.630]to what you need to be successful in the college.
- [00:04:13.410]The JOMC 133 course also includes modules,
- [00:04:16.900]but gives you the opportunity
- [00:04:18.140]to focus on areas of different interests.
- [00:04:20.340]This is a great opportunity
- [00:04:21.470]to explore the Adobe Creative Cloud programs
- [00:04:23.780]and explore areas you might not otherwise be able to.
- [00:04:28.180]The JOMC 134 course wraps up
- [00:04:30.520]this beginning series of skill classes.
- [00:04:32.900]The course focuses on a semester-long project
- [00:04:35.160]where students pitch project ideas,
- [00:04:36.900]work in a team
- [00:04:37.860]to produce an interactive multimedia storytelling project
- [00:04:41.070]and culminates with a project presentation
- [00:04:42.950]at the end of the semester.
