- [00:00:14.080]Hello, Class 2025, I'm Tamayo Zhou.
- [00:00:17.250]I would like to share my student leadership journey at UNL
- [00:00:20.630]for the past seven years.
- [00:00:22.350]Before pursuing my master degree
- [00:00:24.780]in educational administration, I started my journey at UNL
- [00:00:29.180]as an undergraduate student in the College of Business.
- [00:00:32.870]I was never given any racial literacy education
- [00:00:36.760]or understood what inclusive excellence is,
- [00:00:40.490]until I came to UNL.
- [00:00:42.720]Being an international student from China,
- [00:00:45.200]college was very challenging for me.
- [00:00:47.550]I had to navigate a different education system language
- [00:00:51.840]and the culture and had to experiencing the transition
- [00:00:55.630]from being a member of the majority,
- [00:00:57.950]to being a part of the marginalized groups in the society.
- [00:01:03.180]As a part of the international student community,
- [00:01:05.960]I knew many marginalized student have faced
- [00:01:09.620]microaggressions, stereotypes, and hateful acts.
- [00:01:14.290]I'm grateful for the support system
- [00:01:16.420]I was able to fund while being involved on campus.
- [00:01:19.760]I made friends from various backgrounds
- [00:01:22.100]through student organizations and being a member
- [00:01:24.860]of the New Student Enrollment Welcome Team.
- [00:01:27.800]We shared experience and stories with each other.
- [00:01:32.060]My friends encouraged me to pursue leadership roles
- [00:01:35.270]in student organizations.
- [00:01:36.970]So I could pass on the information and the motivation
- [00:01:40.221]with the close support I have.
- [00:01:42.270]I also decided to meet the challenge straight forward.
- [00:01:46.490]I practice my leadership skills to foster an engaging
- [00:01:49.970]and inclusive space so people could hear me out
- [00:01:53.200]and change their assumptions and bias.
- [00:01:56.250]I begin by actively engaging in class group discussions,
- [00:02:01.140]then landing campus jobs,
- [00:02:02.620]such as resident assistant and peer mentor.
- [00:02:06.440]I serve as the President of the International Business Club
- [00:02:10.010]and then become the chair
- [00:02:12.030]of ASUN Student Government Committee
- [00:02:14.870]of Diversity and Inclusion.
- [00:02:17.880]I'm now working as the vice president of student affairs
- [00:02:21.560]at the Graduate Student Assembly.
- [00:02:23.960]During my leadership experience,
- [00:02:25.860]I always have inclusive excellence in my heart to support
- [00:02:30.040]every single person in the community.
- [00:02:32.620]So they do not have to experience what I have faced.
- [00:02:36.270]Although I'm shy and introverted,
- [00:02:38.810]I'm determined to make a change.
- [00:02:41.070]I hope my journey can motivate you
- [00:02:43.300]to continuously pursue inclusive excellence.
