- [00:00:00.100]So.
- [00:00:08.480]Hello, my name is Ted Hibbeler
- [00:00:09.990]and I'm the tribal extension educator
- [00:00:11.950]for the University of Nebraska extension division.
- [00:00:15.580]I work primarily with the tribal communities
- [00:00:17.840]here in Nebraska.
- [00:00:19.199]My work is to establish relationships and partnerships
- [00:00:23.090]with the tribal communities,
- [00:00:24.400]and to help bring the university resources
- [00:00:28.850]and services to their communities.
- [00:00:33.500]And this summer I had the, the,
- [00:00:38.020]I was very fortunate in working with Joy and Devon,
- [00:00:44.380]in doing some research projects
- [00:00:47.040]for Native American communities here in Nebraska.
- [00:00:52.950]One of the projects we were working on,
- [00:00:57.410]it was try to establish a baseline of information
- [00:01:03.130]on Native American enrollment and retention
- [00:01:08.390]and graduation rates in Nebraska K through 12 schools,
- [00:01:12.620]and also in the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:16.110]Devon and Joy researched a lot of different websites
- [00:01:24.710]and telephoned a lot of people
- [00:01:26.480]to get that particular data or information.
- [00:01:31.550]And I was very happy to work with both Joy and Devon,
- [00:01:38.210]in both quantitative and qualitative research.
- [00:01:43.355]And so, in mentoring them with the quantitative research
- [00:01:47.080]is gathering a lot of statistics and numbers
- [00:01:49.840]regarding Native American enrollment,
- [00:01:57.230]graduation and retention information.
- [00:02:04.200]And the other side of that was qualitative research,
- [00:02:08.500]and that was helping Devon and Joy create a, a survey
- [00:02:18.260]to ask particular key faculty
- [00:02:20.910]and administrative members here at UNL,
- [00:02:25.650]and also Native American students here at UNL,
- [00:02:30.060]questions that might help my office
- [00:02:34.930]in gathering information regarding
- [00:02:39.060]the best possible programs and services that we can create
- [00:02:44.780]to help enroll more Native American students,
- [00:02:49.370]retain more Native American students
- [00:02:52.080]and graduate more Native American students
- [00:02:54.410]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:57.130]So I was very happy to work with Joy and Devon,
- [00:03:02.127]and mentoring them in these types of projects.
- [00:03:06.930]And they did a great job in both the quantitative
- [00:03:10.820]and qualitative research,
- [00:03:13.100]and they're still going strong and, and conducting surveys.
- [00:03:17.900]So I'll stop there.
- [00:03:23.610]Hello, my name is Joy
- [00:03:24.820]and I've been interning with Messi tribe.
- [00:03:29.600]And Mr. Tate was my supervisor.
- [00:03:33.590]And I would say this experience helped me grow a lot
- [00:03:36.790]as an inclusive community leader.
- [00:03:40.220]Working with Native American,
- [00:03:41.830]it was an eye opening experience for me.
- [00:03:44.410]I learned a lot of about their history, their background,
- [00:03:48.250]and their culture.
- [00:03:49.083]I got an opportunity to interact with some,
- [00:03:51.510]and fortunately I found their culture and my culture,
- [00:03:55.030]having a lot of things in common.
- [00:03:57.730]I went into this experience with an eye,
- [00:04:00.500]with an open eye,
- [00:04:01.610]and without any doubt I can say I was able to learn
- [00:04:05.089]from this particular group.
- [00:04:07.200]As an inclusive community leader,
- [00:04:09.470]I gained connections and skills
- [00:04:12.150]related to conducting research.
- [00:04:13.900]As Mr. Tate has said.
- [00:04:15.920]We learned about quantitative and qualitative research,
- [00:04:20.030]which I think was really helpful for me
- [00:04:23.510]as an inclusive community leader.
- [00:04:25.590]Thank you.
- [00:04:29.689]Hello, my name is Devon.
- [00:04:31.610]And one of the biggest questions
- [00:04:34.860]that I've been asking myself is,
- [00:04:36.670]yes, this is a great experience,
- [00:04:38.420]but how can I use what I've learned from this experience
- [00:04:42.360]in my future?
- [00:04:43.193]And the answer is that this experience
- [00:04:46.130]has been a very big growth opportunity for me,
- [00:04:50.150]because thanks to it
- [00:04:51.060]I have seen myself grow into communicator,
- [00:04:53.817]inclusive leader and community oriented team player.
- [00:04:59.900]And these are skills,
- [00:05:01.210]these among other skills are things
- [00:05:03.670]that I envision myself using in the future
- [00:05:05.928]in the various team that I'll get to use to work with,
- [00:05:10.480]to cooperate with individuals different from myself
- [00:05:12.960]and take on responsibilities that can help benefit the team.
- [00:05:18.050]So I find myself using these skills in the future
- [00:05:20.530]to benefit whatever team I'll be working with
- [00:05:22.730]because throughout this experience,
- [00:05:25.403]I have learned more than I would have imagined myself
- [00:05:28.380]learning at the start of it.
- [00:05:29.600]And I'm very grateful to have been part of this amazing
- [00:05:33.520]Messi team.
- [00:05:34.353]Thank you.
