- [00:00:01.374]Hello, everyone. Welcome to Gastler county.
- [00:00:02.930]This is Osama.
- [00:00:03.920]During this summer, I got the opportunity
- [00:00:06.900]to work as an RPN at Gastler county.
- [00:00:09.910]Since my internship was fully remotely,
- [00:00:12.967]our project at Gastler county was create a connection
- [00:00:18.076]between each single community in Nebraska in one site.
- [00:00:23.303]Hi. I am Sean Caskey, and I am the,
- [00:00:25.820]rural prosperity, Nebraska extension educator,
- [00:00:29.521]serving central Nebraska. I have
- [00:00:32.900]eight counties in central Nebraska
- [00:00:34.500]that I help rural community development, needs,
- [00:00:37.777]and the communities and businesses within them.
- [00:00:40.218]Being a former local economic development director,
- [00:00:44.021]and UNK entrepreneurship tenant director,
- [00:00:47.500]I have a lot of great relationships
- [00:00:50.069]and know about a lot of the great resources
- [00:00:52.220]available to the communities in central Nebraska.
- [00:00:55.620]The project was about creating
- [00:00:57.450]a color-coded map that will show
- [00:00:59.289]the number of contacts for the zip code,
- [00:01:00.122]the population of the zip code,
- [00:01:08.982]the layers of different regions,
- [00:01:09.815]such as RPN regions, engagment zones,
- [00:01:10.648]regions, and community college regions.
- [00:01:14.370]Our project is important because it will help
- [00:01:16.625]the people-(inaudible). At the
- [00:01:18.723]University of Nebraska, extension educators
- [00:01:21.960]to make a touch with the communities.
- [00:01:24.028]They are responsible to gather the needed information for
- [00:01:28.109]these community.
- [00:01:30.540]Osama's mapping and socioeconomic statistical work
- [00:01:34.417]is very important for the future of community
- [00:01:37.130]development outreach in Nebraska's small towns.
- [00:01:39.660]Because when, not if, when those
- [00:01:41.662]small towns apply for grant funding,
- [00:01:43.800]they will need to communicate their goals and assets to
- [00:01:47.200]program sponsors, renters, their own residents and other
- [00:01:50.470]stakeholders in an easily understood format.
- [00:01:52.646]Mapping is an easy way to understand the community,
- [00:01:55.928]community development needs and show
- [00:01:57.995]external resource providers and
- [00:01:59.922]partners such as those that provide business plans to local
- [00:02:04.788]towns and infrastructure expansion projects,
- [00:02:08.099]such as our engineering partners.
- [00:02:10.480]which communities have not been contacted
- [00:02:12.645]and the assistance available. The
- [00:02:15.270]pandemic has made it clear that we need a good
- [00:02:17.900]plan for finding out which communities have not been
- [00:02:20.720]contacted, and how best to reach out to those.
- [00:02:22.824]Osama's work has been vital in mapping out where the
- [00:02:25.757]communities are that have not been,
- [00:02:28.080]contacted and what, what their needs really are.
- [00:02:33.840]Indeed my position wasn't liked,
- [00:02:36.238]but they have learned a lot of new experiences about my book
- [00:02:39.030]that will help me in the future.
- [00:02:42.389]Also it will help me in my future career. Also, I was,
- [00:02:46.693]since I was working with this project with my own,
- [00:02:50.170]I have improved my inclusive leadership in different.
- [00:02:55.590]I am very thankful to host Osama this summer.
- [00:02:57.892]I really enjoyed learning how community development
- [00:03:01.269]works in his home country of Oman.
- [00:03:03.610]We really benefited from his background and knowledge,
- [00:03:06.970]as a UNL engineering major. Since many Nebraska
- [00:03:09.489]small towns have infrastructure needs,
- [00:03:11.602]and they need a plan to address them.
