- [00:00:05.350]Hi, I'm Jenny Nixon,
- [00:00:07.840]University of Nebraska extension educator
- [00:00:10.240]in the North Panhandle.
- [00:00:12.370]The Rural Fellows that we had in the North Panhandle area
- [00:00:15.720]this summer really helped to connect a lot
- [00:00:19.430]of different people in the community together,
- [00:00:21.350]especially around the tourism industry.
- [00:00:24.210]They created a data collection tool that is helping
- [00:00:27.810]to further the data available for use
- [00:00:31.330]in tourism promotion strategies.
- [00:00:34.280]This is just a nice beginning step for us
- [00:00:36.720]to be able to grow on for the future.
- [00:00:40.210]I was personally able to connect with several people
- [00:00:43.030]that I don't normally work with
- [00:00:44.870]and have been just excited to work with the students
- [00:00:48.800]and to work with some different people in our community.
- [00:00:54.870]Hi, I'm Terri Haynes with Chadron Public Schools.
- [00:00:58.060]I am a project manager for the AWARE grant,
- [00:01:00.450]which is focusing on mental health and this summer
- [00:01:04.250]our interns helped us so much in the behavioral health.
- [00:01:07.220]We have a new handbook for ESU 13 and some new brochures
- [00:01:12.160]for Chadron Public Schools to help parents
- [00:01:14.850]navigate student services in our school system
- [00:01:18.330]and mental health services in our community.
- [00:01:21.410]Additionally, I was so glad as a team
- [00:01:24.930]that we got to be in the academy together
- [00:01:26.920]and get to know each other a little better
- [00:01:29.490]before starting the summer with all of our projects.
- [00:01:33.990]Additionally, I so appreciated the team coaching,
- [00:01:36.830]and I hope that we get to use that again in the future.
- [00:01:39.850]Regardless of the status of our team,
- [00:01:42.040]it helps the team so much become cohesive
- [00:01:45.740]and inclusive and understand each other.
- [00:01:48.240]So it's a very, very great experience and I appreciate it.
- [00:01:53.710]Hi, I'm Chantelle Schulz and I am a senior
- [00:01:55.970]in the ag leadership at the university.
- [00:01:58.880]This summer we were working in Dawes County
- [00:02:01.510]and we did a couple projects that we really wanted
- [00:02:03.900]to help impact the community growth
- [00:02:05.870]in economic and educational supports.
- [00:02:08.730]So we created two projects in tourism with an app
- [00:02:13.200]and a survey and, with those two projects,
- [00:02:15.670]we were able to see the rates and growth of the tourism
- [00:02:18.630]coming in and out of Dawes County.
- [00:02:20.750]Our overall vision and goal this summer
- [00:02:22.700]was to see how that would impact
- [00:02:24.900]and how we could better further the education
- [00:02:27.220]and the opportunities for tourists.
- [00:02:29.620]Go.
- [00:02:30.453]Hi, I'm Hanna Jemison.
- [00:02:31.950]I am a student from Columbus, Nebraska,
- [00:02:34.300]and this summer I was placed
- [00:02:35.730]in the Chadron/Dawes County community area.
- [00:02:39.180]So regarding how I will use what I've learned
- [00:02:42.810]in this experience in my future, I am a psychology major.
- [00:02:47.220]One of the things that the Chadron/Dawes County area
- [00:02:50.160]has been focusing on a lot this summer
- [00:02:52.560]is spreading mental health awareness
- [00:02:54.510]and awareness of mental health resources
- [00:02:56.770]that are available in this community.
- [00:02:58.890]One of the great opportunities I've gotten working
- [00:03:01.320]with one of my community leaders, Terri Haynes,
- [00:03:03.430]is I've gotten to participate in a lot of trainings
- [00:03:07.920]that help people to deal with somebody
- [00:03:10.790]who may be going through a mental health crisis.
- [00:03:13.780]That's something that I will need to be able to do
- [00:03:16.620]in my future as a psychologist,
- [00:03:19.150]so this was a very valuable experience for me,
- [00:03:21.620]vocationally and personally.
- [00:03:23.670]Ready now? Great.
- [00:03:25.120]Hi, I'm Jacy Hafer.
- [00:03:26.510]I'm a junior agricultural leadership major
- [00:03:28.770]from the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:30.590]and I'm the third student fellow here
- [00:03:32.760]in Chadron/Dawes County this summer.
- [00:03:34.810]So I would just say that how this experience helped me grow
- [00:03:37.630]as an inclusive community leader is ultimately understanding
- [00:03:41.590]that just because you may have diversity in a community
- [00:03:44.700]does not mean that you automatically also have inclusion
- [00:03:48.250]in that space but, if we can create inclusion,
- [00:03:51.650]then it opens up the opportunity
- [00:03:54.280]for more diverse individuals to feel welcome
- [00:03:57.120]and want to take part in that.
- [00:03:58.940]So ultimately this summer we've been trying to spread
- [00:04:02.360]education and awareness to our community,
- [00:04:04.530]through mental health resources and tourism
- [00:04:07.670]so that people understand the resources they have available
- [00:04:11.540]to them and can feel like a greater part of this community.
