- [00:00:02.833]Hi my name is Kinga Aletto, and
- [00:00:04.575]my presentation is
- [00:00:05.610]on Inventive thinking, a cohesive
- [00:00:07.018]body of work,
- [00:00:08.052]and past work
- [00:00:09.026]I have done with Professor Dominguez.
- [00:00:10.717]In Professor Dominguezs studio
- [00:00:13.437]last UCARE summer session,
- [00:00:15.639]the majority of the work done focused on
- [00:00:17.558]the creation of multiple pieces.
- [00:00:20.150]From starting with raw clay, under glazing,
- [00:00:22.237]preparing pieces for the kiln,
- [00:00:25.018]and to the final project.
- [00:00:27.086]As a UCARE student this
- [00:00:29.524]summer with Professor Dominguez,
- [00:00:32.259]we worked on the sale of multiple pieces.
- [00:00:33.325]Meaning picking which
- [00:00:34.600]pieces would be displayed and
- [00:00:36.062]where the boxes were located,
- [00:00:37.070]packing everything properly,
- [00:00:38.417]setting up a show in a professional gallery,
- [00:00:39.403]and any other small details that
- [00:00:41.208]may accompany this.
- [00:00:42.660]To start my project, I had earned an
- [00:00:44.123]opportunity to attend a
- [00:00:45.187]workshop at Anderson Ranch
- [00:00:45.854]in Snowmass Village, Colorado.
- [00:00:49.372]The workshop I earned a spot in
- [00:00:51.017]was Sculptural Papermaking.
- [00:00:54.833]This included learning the techniques
- [00:00:56.447]and methods used to make
- [00:00:58.423]advanced paper
- [00:00:59.197]sculptures. This workshop was only
- [00:01:00.492]5 days but included 2 different projects.
- [00:01:02.771]The first project was to put the new
- [00:01:05.537]methods and techniques that we learned
- [00:01:07.372]into practice.
- [00:01:09.355]We did this by using found objects and
- [00:01:11.736]paper mache the forms.
- [00:01:13.939]This was my first piece. My two
- [00:01:16.335]found objects
- [00:01:17.087]were two rocks I found along the path.
- [00:01:18.404]I used wheat paste instead of the
- [00:01:20.385]wood glue and water mixture
- [00:01:22.322]because wheat paste would dry clear,
- [00:01:23.726]while the wood glue would have
- [00:01:26.507]a slight yellow tint.
- [00:01:28.433]I also decided to experiment a little
- [00:01:30.456]with my pieces and
- [00:01:31.701]tried to create small
- [00:01:32.365]paper flowers on the rocks, testing
- [00:01:32.956]different types of paper to see
- [00:01:35.219]which one worked best.
- [00:01:37.140]For the second project, I decided to
- [00:01:40.157]continue the idea I had,
- [00:01:42.718]and to mold
- [00:01:43.517]more found rocks with
- [00:01:45.570]flowers attached.
- [00:01:47.005]I made some changes to
- [00:01:48.515]the second piece
- [00:01:49.120]after observing what I liked and
- [00:01:50.453]disliked of my first piece.
- [00:01:51.973]Since both pieces would be
- [00:01:53.769]displayed outside, I decided to change
- [00:01:55.640]my choice of white paper
- [00:01:58.068]to tracing paper
- [00:01:59.443]to highlight the transparency
- [00:02:00.641]of the object with the
- [00:02:02.858]sunlight shining
- [00:02:03.555]through the paper.
- [00:02:05.051]To also expand on this idea,
- [00:02:06.619]I only did one layer vs the four
- [00:02:07.871]layers on the first set of rocks to
- [00:02:09.782]get the full effect.
- [00:02:11.039]Once both pieces were done,
- [00:02:13.404]we held a group discussion about
- [00:02:14.973]our pieces and why we made
- [00:02:16.301]what we did.
- [00:02:17.620]I found the multiple discussions
- [00:02:18.857]we had as a group to be
- [00:02:19.939]enlightening, as
- [00:02:20.575]it gave me an opportunity
- [00:02:21.850]to observe the changes made
- [00:02:23.254]between other
- [00:02:24.540]participants works and their reasons
- [00:02:26.373]and influences, and to share mine
- [00:02:27.335]and receive feed back.
- [00:02:29.139]To decide how approach making
- [00:02:32.924]my pieces for this summer, I used past
- [00:02:34.834]work as reference. I had four different
- [00:02:36.191]plates, a tile, and one cups as reference.
- [00:02:38.236]The first and second plates had
- [00:02:40.971]white slip applied over red clay.
- [00:02:44.105]The white clay was then carved away
- [00:02:46.174]to reveal the red clay underneath,
- [00:02:47.889]and each one was carved with varying
- [00:02:49.754]levels of complexity. I decided to
- [00:02:50.954]paint neither of these plates,
- [00:02:53.451]as the focus was on the carving
- [00:02:55.348]marks, not necessarily color.
- [00:02:56.807]The third plate is a combination of
- [00:02:58.998]carving and underglaze painting. For this
- [00:03:00.945]plate I wanted to experiment painting
- [00:03:05.238]the flower, and painting
- [00:03:07.134]over the carving marks.
- [00:03:08.255]The fourth plate is also a combination
- [00:03:10.074]of carving and underglaze painting,
- [00:03:11.891]but more simplistic in the
- [00:03:13.669]painting compared
- [00:03:14.999]to the yellow flower plate, and the carve
- [00:03:16.189]marks were not painted over.
- [00:03:17.351]The cup was made by Professor
- [00:03:18.417]Dominguez, and painted by me
- [00:03:20.885]in the coloration of the
- [00:03:22.083]Javan Kingfisher. The
- [00:03:22.867]under-glaze painting
- [00:03:24.466]in this piece has a combination
- [00:03:26.771]of simplistic and complex
- [00:03:29.020]painting. With some parts
- [00:03:31.757]of the cup painted
- [00:03:32.554]one color and following
- [00:03:33.457]the carved marks,
- [00:03:35.072]while other parts are blended. The tile
- [00:03:36.283]was a completely painted piece done
- [00:03:37.802]by Professor Dominguez and I. Underglazes
- [00:03:41.072]were painted on white clay in the
- [00:03:43.026]image of a garden.
- [00:03:44.340]After looking over all of these
- [00:03:46.531]pieces, and picking the qualities
- [00:03:47.607]that I liked most, I had decided
- [00:03:50.943]to paint all of my pieces without
- [00:03:52.459]carving, and approaching more of a
- [00:03:54.590]painterly look, like in the tile and the
- [00:03:56.852]yellow flower vs the purple flower that
- [00:03:58.007]uses the carved marks to make the image.
- [00:04:01.469]For my pieces I used a more translucent
- [00:04:04.515]underglaze on all of the outside designs,
- [00:04:07.415]and stroke and coat on t
- [00:04:09.023]he inside of the pieces.
- [00:04:11.154]A stoke and coat glaze means that it does
- [00:04:13.966]not require a clear glaze coat like the
- [00:04:15.102]translucent under glazes, and will come
- [00:04:16.215]out shiny and sealed after the first firing.
- [00:04:17.647]With each piece, I decided to increase in
- [00:04:21.033]complexity, starting with
- [00:04:22.468]the mug, the two cups,
- [00:04:35.067]then finally the bowl.
