- [00:00:00.000]Hello students and welcome to the JOUR200A
- [00:00:03.650]Reporting Class, I'm Barney McCoy.
- [00:00:05.470]Barney McCoy produced videos
- [00:00:07.430]for an online class and invested in equipment
- [00:00:10.530]to help him teach remotely.
- [00:00:12.650]I've got my little light here, and.
- [00:00:14.030]McCoy, like many other professors,
- [00:00:16.100]had to quickly move classes online in March 2020
- [00:00:19.570]because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:00:22.000]This was a tsunami, you know,
- [00:00:24.130]that no one saw coming and suddenly it was looming
- [00:00:27.920]in front of us and washing over us,
- [00:00:29.700]and so we had to learn how to swim.
- [00:00:32.720]Nearly 68% of those surveyed report
- [00:00:35.370]they learned less because of the shift.
- [00:00:37.960]Students struggled with economic uncertainty,
- [00:00:40.970]anxiety, and social isolation.
- [00:00:43.780]Four out of five students found the online environment
- [00:00:46.560]more distracting than the classroom.
- [00:00:48.720]Information from the survey helps inform the future.
- [00:00:52.190]It's important for us to understand not just
- [00:00:53.910]what we're doing, but why are we doing this,
- [00:00:56.200]and what have our experiences been
- [00:00:58.330]and what didn't we like, and what did we like?
- [00:01:01.570]The online experience improved over the year.
- [00:01:04.510]Faculty had more time to prepare and federal dollars helped
- [00:01:07.930]fund technology upgrades.
- [00:01:10.130]Survey participants want to see online options continue,
- [00:01:14.190]even though they're anxious to get back to the classroom.
- [00:01:17.100]They want to have those experiences.
- [00:01:18.650]They value those experiences.
- [00:01:20.250]They miss that during the pandemic,
- [00:01:22.430]but they also said it's really important for us now,
- [00:01:25.350]with the technology that's available,
- [00:01:27.330]for us to have the option, if we need to,
- [00:01:29.910]to have remote and online learning options available to us.
- [00:01:33.870]McCoy is happy to welcome students
- [00:01:35.910]back to class, but he says the pandemic created
- [00:01:38.810]a shift that will help universities improve
- [00:01:41.300]the student experience.
- [00:01:43.180]It began as a fire and it ended as something
- [00:01:47.270]that was much more consistent and understandable
- [00:01:50.930]to everybody who was involved in that process.
- [00:01:52.650]So that is part of the development, I think,
- [00:01:56.840]of online and remote teaching experiences
- [00:01:59.700]that will improve higher education for all.
