- [00:12:31.470]Kerra Russell: Thank you alright, so thank you all again for for joining us this evening, as Rachel mentioned this webinar will focus a little bit on how you can become involved.
- [00:12:44.040]Kerra Russell: Through oasis through the multicultural Center or some of our recognized student organizations on campus, so I will be telling you a little bit about that tonight.
- [00:12:54.810]Kerra Russell: awesome so first.
- [00:12:58.350]Kerra Russell: As I mentioned, our office is located on the first floor of the Jackie gone multicultural Center our building is connected to the student Union it's if you can see my my screen in the background that's the multicultural Center.
- [00:13:12.750]Kerra Russell: Our mission is to enhance student success by promoting academic excellence diversity awareness and social engagement.
- [00:13:20.970]Kerra Russell: We try to provide retention services as well, so our services are available to all students on campus, but we do place an emphasis.
- [00:13:29.880]Kerra Russell: On students that identifies underrepresented meaning they are students of color students who identify as low income or first generation, so if you fall within any of those categories, you would probably benefit from being in our Program.
- [00:13:46.230]Kerra Russell: And then, lastly, providing students with the resources to be successful and ensure that you have a smooth transition from high school to college.
- [00:13:54.480]Kerra Russell: Everyone on our staff wants to see students be successful we kind of pride ourselves on that, and it also.
- [00:14:03.840]Kerra Russell: It just makes us feel good about ourselves to see our students doing well in academically socially and learning about diversity awareness, as I mentioned earlier, so.
- [00:14:14.250]Kerra Russell: Our staff are a lot like high school counselors in the sense that we are kind of like a one stop shop So if you do have questions about anything.
- [00:14:22.590]Kerra Russell: You can always come to our office if there's a question that we may not know the answer to we can always direct you.
- [00:14:29.940]Kerra Russell: to someone who can because of the campus partnerships and relationships that we have so next slide please, thank you, with our program students are paired with a staff member, as well as an upper class student that serves as your peer mentor.
- [00:14:47.790]Kerra Russell: For your entire first year, you will meet with your peer mentor as well as your staff mentor twice a semester.
- [00:14:55.080]Kerra Russell: We also offer a seminar class that is an 11 week zero credit pass no pass course so it's no additional cost to you to take the class.
- [00:15:04.860]Kerra Russell: We cover some basic things like time management studies skills mental health and well being financial literacy, we talked about campus resources so as a new student some of those things that.
- [00:15:18.810]Kerra Russell: may help you in the long run, we try to give you those resources early on, just in case you need to utilize them later.
- [00:15:26.880]Kerra Russell: We do have mid semester great checks throughout the fall and spring semester, just to kind of check in and see where students are academically if you are meeting some additional assistance with a course we can step in and provide free Tutoring.
- [00:15:42.780]Kerra Russell: Or if you're just wanting to know how to walk through a conversation with your Professor during office hours, we can also help you with that.
- [00:15:52.200]Kerra Russell: Study hours are required, we only require students to do a minimum of six hours, I always say that you should definitely be doing more than six hours, but that is just kind of to help students stay accountable at first year.
- [00:16:07.260]Kerra Russell: And then gaining personal, professional skills for college and beyond, there are tons of different leadership opportunities within our program as well as outside of our program I will say that a lot of our oasis scholars have gone on to do different things on campus whether it's.
- [00:16:25.170]Kerra Russell: Research with UK or or mcnair or becoming a new student enrollment orientation leader so.
- [00:16:33.270]Kerra Russell: Diversity and social events are also a requirement.
- [00:16:37.320]Kerra Russell: A lot of times students within their first year tend to stay in their residence halls or not really ventured off onto campus so that is one of the things that we do require students attended at least three events per semester.
- [00:16:51.330]Kerra Russell: So students can kind of get out of their comfort comfort zone and just learn about different cultures and opportunities that they can take advantage of on campus so.
- [00:17:02.940]Kerra Russell: Next slide.
- [00:17:05.040]Kerra Russell: And then so academic excellence, one of our pillars, as I mentioned earlier, we do provide free Tutoring as studies studio.
- [00:17:13.650]Kerra Russell: mainly in math and science courses, because those are typically the courses that students struggle with the most um we do offer other subjects, but mainly math and science.
- [00:17:26.190]Kerra Russell: Our peer mentor program again students that apply to be peer mentors are always top of the class their student leaders so they're great students to have.
- [00:17:38.100]Kerra Russell: connections with on campus sometimes our first year students may not feel comfortable sharing certain information with us as staff and they may feel more comfortable sharing that information with appear.
- [00:17:49.980]Kerra Russell: And sometimes there are things that that students know because they are out on campus that we staff don't know so that's always a plus.
- [00:18:00.600]Kerra Russell: Our academic excellence and graduation receptions as well as our first year 4.0 reception.
- [00:18:06.450]Kerra Russell: So students that are in our program who are sophomore standing or above.
- [00:18:11.130]Kerra Russell: That receive a 3.5 GPA are honored in the fall in the spring semester, as well as when you graduate so we kind of follow you, through your first year until you graduate.
- [00:18:22.980]Kerra Russell: And we just want to honor the hard work and dedication that students have put into college, we understand the academics, is a lot and to be successful, not only academically you do need those other pillars to kind of help you along the way, so next slide please and then social engagement.
- [00:18:45.270]Kerra Russell: We do an oasis kickoff every year at the beginning of the fall semester, you can kind of see the picture on the bottom right corner, this was taken.
- [00:18:57.480]Kerra Russell: I want to say two years ago.
- [00:19:00.240]Kerra Russell: We host an event on the on the Plaza outside of the Union and we bring in different vendors, as well as some of the student organizations that we invite to host a booth so if there are organizations or clubs that you're wanting to be involved in.
- [00:19:18.810]Kerra Russell: Some of those multicultural organizations are invited to the oasis kickoff to share information about how you can get involved, or if you're just interested in attending a meeting to see what they're all about you can do that as well.
- [00:19:34.200]Kerra Russell: Our lunch and learn events happen once a month, and these are opportunities for students, like I mentioned, with the leadership opportunities, where we invite different campus partners, as well as people in the Community to come and talk to students about.
- [00:19:51.780]Kerra Russell: job opportunities internships.
- [00:19:56.190]Kerra Russell: fellowships that you can work over the summer, if you're just needing volunteer hours or community service, we invite people.
- [00:20:05.250]Kerra Russell: To come and talk to you about those things, who are specifically looking for college students like yourself so i'm.
- [00:20:12.390]Kerra Russell: brother to brother is a program that we recently started or about two or three years ago, specifically to help keep men of color retained in college just because statistically, they do not graduate at as high as a high high rates as their counterparts so.
- [00:20:33.150]Kerra Russell: That program was set up specifically for men of color and people who identify as male.
- [00:20:40.230]Kerra Russell: And then, lastly, our stop serving mingle event is a social event that we host once once a month as well um.
- [00:20:48.270]Kerra Russell: Students like this one, because it kind of gives them an opportunity to just take your mind off of academics for a little bit we work on arts and crafts for different nonprofit agencies in the Lincoln Community so if you're familiar with meals on wheels we decorate those bags.
- [00:21:08.250]Kerra Russell: We have a partnership with the military and veteran successor on campus so students are able to send cards to veterans that have some type of ties to nebraska just kind of thanking them for their services and.
- [00:21:21.840]Kerra Russell: The friendship home is a shelter here in town, that is for abused and battered women and children, so as those families are checking into the shelter they receive a nice greeting card or motivational inspirational message from our students so.
- [00:21:39.600]Kerra Russell: The top right picture is a picture of the students working on those arts and crafts.
- [00:21:46.980]Kerra Russell: And then it's a two hour event, so we do the arts and crafts, for the first hour and then the second hour we open the floor up for karaoke so lots of fun and students enjoy just having an opportunity to give back to the Community so.
- [00:22:05.370]Kerra Russell: And lastly, diversity awareness dish it up, is one of our more popular events it's fun that happens, once a week every Tuesday from 12 to one in our student lounge and.
- [00:22:20.940]Kerra Russell: faculty staff students are invited to talk about different topics and have a friendly debate, if you will, we can talk about topics that range from race, religion, politics, things that are trending in social media.
- [00:22:39.990]Kerra Russell: It it really varies, but it is, I will say a brave space where people aren't judged for their own personal perspective, so it also helps you in the classroom when you starting to have those open dialogues.
- [00:22:55.440]Kerra Russell: I will say a couple years ago there was a very big discussion on who was a better performer out of Michael Jackson and beyonce so that that conversation get pretty pretty heated at the moment but.
- [00:23:10.110]Kerra Russell: I think everyone like I said learn how to have a open debate without judging others so i'm husker dialogues is one of our events that we do in fall and this one is mandatory for all first year students to attend.
- [00:23:28.560]Kerra Russell: We have conversation groups and it's really for students to kind of be comfortable having conversations around diversity equity equity and inclusion issues and learning from other people's opinions perspectives and experiences.
- [00:23:48.420]Kerra Russell: The multicultural Greek stroll off is also one that we do in the fall so we're very busy in the fall semester.
- [00:23:56.220]Kerra Russell: Where the multicultural Greeks from the national pan Hellenic Greek Council come together and compete against one another.
- [00:24:06.450]Kerra Russell: And then, in the in one of the fraternities and sororities are crowned the winner, so they really just get bragging rights and a certificate from our office, and then we have tons of different cultural heritage month celebrations throughout the year.
- [00:24:25.020]Kerra Russell: We do things for black history month the photo on the far left was a fiesta on the grain during Hispanic heritage month.
- [00:24:36.420]Kerra Russell: We do things for a pita native American heritage month we aren't able to celebrate all the cultures on campus, but we do try to focus on those for.
- [00:24:48.660]Kerra Russell: You do not necessarily have to identify with any of those.
- [00:24:53.190]Kerra Russell: races to attend our events but it's a great opportunity to learn something new, about a different culture, so we do invite everyone to attend our events, whether you identify that way or not.
- [00:25:10.440]Kerra Russell: And this is actually a video from the stroll off to the old 2018 so yeah that was three years ago, so you can kind of get an idea of what our events look like pre co bid.
- [00:25:24.420]Kerra Russell: We originally started doing this in the centennial room, which is located in the student union, and since then we have outgrown that space, and we are now in the lead singer and performing arts so.
- [00:25:41.010]Kerra Russell: Let you take a look at that video.
- [00:25:43.770]Rachel Lindhart: i'm going to re share my screen here so that it shares the sound as well okay.
- [00:27:54.240]Kerra Russell: Alright, so frequently asked questions.
- [00:28:02.100]Kerra Russell: Okay, so the first line what oops.
- [00:28:12.420]Kerra Russell: Okay, there we go what multicultural opportunities are available at ul, so there are over 500 recognized student organizations that cover a wide range of topics.
- [00:28:24.630]Kerra Russell: masa is the Mexican American student association ap you is the African peoples union as a as an African student association, as you is the Asian student Union.
- [00:28:38.550]Kerra Russell: unite is a native group bs use the black student Union I could go on and on, but there are tons of different organizations on campus that.
- [00:28:48.390]Kerra Russell: That you can join whether it's something related to your major your identity, even if if there isn't a club that exists, that is something that you would be interested in, you can always create your own as long as you have, I believe, three Members of President.
- [00:29:08.550]Kerra Russell: treasurer and Vice President or primary programmer you could pretty much start any organization that you want so joining groups like these, is a great opportunity to meet new people.
- [00:29:21.000]Kerra Russell: who may have similar backgrounds to you and face similar challenges so.
- [00:29:26.370]Kerra Russell: definitely look into joining organizations, it may be a lot your first year, but you can at least the research, some of the organizations that are out there.
- [00:29:35.250]Kerra Russell: I know there's a soap carving club I think there's a squirrel washing clothes so anything that you can think of a probably already exist, and if it doesn't, then you can create your own.
- [00:29:51.660]Kerra Russell: And how can allies find ways to be more tolerant and informed of cultures that are different from their own so like I mentioned.
- [00:30:00.930]Kerra Russell: attending meetings or events held by some of the student organizations mentioned in the previous slide their meetings are open to anyone, so you don't necessarily have to be a member.
- [00:30:13.290]Kerra Russell: Most of the student organizations meet about once a month or once a week, so you can go to the involve you two point O website to see how they how often they meet.
- [00:30:25.410]Kerra Russell: Where they meet and what time it just popping in on a meeting I know a lot of the student organizations have also transition to like a hybrid model so they're half in person and half via zoom if you want to watch virtually so you have that option.
- [00:30:43.530]Kerra Russell: And then coming to oasis events so like I mentioned, we host several hair to demand celebrations throughout the year.
- [00:30:51.630]Kerra Russell: That are open to faculty students and staff, as well as your families if you are local in town, so you can always come out and learn more about different cultures at our events as well.
- [00:31:12.000]Kerra Russell: How can I get involved with oasis so students that are receiving specific diversity enhancement scholarships are required to participate in our program, however, if you're not you can always.
- [00:31:27.090]Kerra Russell: Let us know that you're interested by completing our interest form on the website, if you want to take a screenshot or a picture of the link, you can go to the website i'm.
- [00:31:40.170]Kerra Russell: mentoring and Tutoring services are available to students leadership opportunities so.
- [00:31:46.860]Kerra Russell: Our peer mentor program, as I mentioned, if you would like to if you would like to be a mentor to incoming students it's a paying job you do have to be sophomore standing and above the same with our learning consultants, so it studies studio if you are amazing at math or science or English.
- [00:32:08.790]Kerra Russell: You can apply apply to be a learning assault consultants and and basically get paid for, knowing what you already know so um we have the oasis student advisory board as well, where students are putting on events for students so as for students by students.
- [00:32:27.720]Kerra Russell: The Advisory Board is not a paying position, but it is a great experience to add to your resume and then our front desk workers are amazing So if you ever enter our building you'll see them at the front desk.
- [00:32:43.980]Kerra Russell: pyramid tours I didn't mention also are required to work, some of the diversity and social events that I had shown you earlier, so in the video any of the people that you saw with the straight out of oasis T shirts on where our peer mentors so they are getting paid to have so.
- [00:33:06.930]Kerra Russell: And I think that's.
- [00:33:08.700]Rachel Lindhart: That that's a great note to end.
- [00:33:10.380]On.
- [00:33:12.720]Rachel Lindhart: awesome Thank you Kara so that's the conclusion of the the formal presentation, but we want to pass it over to y'all to.
- [00:33:19.800]Rachel Lindhart: ask any questions that you might have an answer any questions or concerns that you have as you're preparing to come next month already.
- [00:33:28.680]Rachel Lindhart: So I will open that I will open the floor up to y'all to send any questions through that Q amp a box, I see that we do you have a question here Kara and.
- [00:33:38.940]Rachel Lindhart: Do first year students include transfer students for joining So could you talk a bit about transfer student programming and how they get involved as well.
- [00:33:47.610]Kerra Russell: Yes, yes, so um as a transfer student, depending on how many credits, you have coming in, you may not qualify for like the scholarship to take the seminar.
- [00:34:03.090]Kerra Russell: But again, you can always be involved or receive our services without taking that seminar so.
- [00:34:09.930]Kerra Russell: Basically, having a peer mentor being assigned to an oasis staff mentor as upper class students, we do not require study hours if that's something that you as an upper class students would like.
- [00:34:25.200]Kerra Russell: Just to kind of be accountable, or have an accountability accountability coach we can always work that into like your success plan or set some goals for you, but um.
- [00:34:37.170]Kerra Russell: yeah as long as there are seats available if you would be interested in taking the 11 week seminar that's totally fine, but as a transfer student it's not required so you could definitely just receive our services without taking the class good question.
- [00:34:57.750]Rachel Lindhart: That was a great question and I think you mentioned was that the learning consultants, you have to be a sophomore standing Is that correct.
- [00:35:05.700]Rachel Lindhart: Yes, so applying to transfer students.
- [00:35:09.000]Kerra Russell: yeah for.
- [00:35:11.100]Kerra Russell: Learning consultants and peer mentors.
- [00:35:14.100]Kerra Russell: As long as you and I can't think of the number of credits off the top of my head that would make you a sophomore but you do have to be sophomore standing or above to apply to be a peer mentor or learning consultant so.
- [00:35:31.290]Rachel Lindhart: And what exactly does being a peer mentor consist of.
- [00:35:35.400]Kerra Russell: Good question so with our 11 weeks seminar peer mentors are required to post.
- [00:35:43.620]Kerra Russell: four to five office hours per week so just based on your what your schedule looks like you can make your office hours outside of when you're busy or when you're in class or, if you have other jobs that you're working.
- [00:36:00.420]Kerra Russell: One of those hours is also dedicated to a seminar, so we have 10 different seminar sections and in each section, there are about two mentors assigned to the class to.
- [00:36:13.980]Kerra Russell: act as like a teaching assistant so you're also getting experience in the classroom um.
- [00:36:20.250]Kerra Russell: Some peer mentors are are like education majors so they want to get in front of the class and teach others are not so they might just be helping with grading papers, or just posting messages on canvases to the rest of the class.
- [00:36:37.560]Kerra Russell: And then each semester, you are required to work at least two or three events so again based on your availability, you can sign up for the events that you are able to work.
- [00:36:51.510]Kerra Russell: And then, sometimes things pop up throughout the Semester, where we do have.
- [00:36:57.630]Kerra Russell: Additional events come up so peer mentors have an opportunity to get a little bit more than 10 hours a week than what they usually do.
- [00:37:06.810]Kerra Russell: um but yeah grading papers hosting office hours and attend attending the seminar class are pretty much the main requirements for peer mentors there's also a professional development, once a month that we host.
- [00:37:27.900]Kerra Russell: specifically for the peer mentors so you can.
- [00:37:31.470]Kerra Russell: Just gain some additional skills outside of coaching and being a peer mentor.
- [00:37:40.800]Rachel Lindhart: carry this might be a bit of an unfair question but i'm curious which of oasis's events events do you most look forward to each year.
- [00:37:49.980]Oh.
- [00:37:53.460]Kerra Russell: Oh man, so I am a big foodie and before coven oasis was very much known for having food at our events if you're familiar with the freshman 15 I would.
- [00:38:08.430]Kerra Russell: always tell students that they could probably gain 14 of those 15 pounds at our events alone so i'm probably stopped serving mingle would be the one that I look forward to the most.
- [00:38:22.110]Kerra Russell: Even and I had said that we do carry yogi you don't have to necessarily know how to sing to do karaoke it's just a fun time like I said to get your mind off of academics and just kind of de stress a little bit from the school work, but you have to do, but yeah the arts and crafts.
- [00:38:43.740]Kerra Russell: I think, is probably my favorite event.
- [00:38:48.330]Rachel Lindhart: awesome nothing brings people together like arts and crafts karaoke and food over the lunch.
- [00:38:57.330]Rachel Lindhart: And the next question here is the oasis kickoff on the first day of the fall semester when is it scheduled for.
- [00:39:04.380]Kerra Russell: The oasis kickoff is actually on a Sunday, and I want to say it is the.
- [00:39:12.690]Kerra Russell: First Sunday within that first week of the Semester i'm either that first or second Sunday, so we have our oasis welcome orientation, the Sunday before classes start, and then the kickoff is a week or two after that so.
- [00:39:34.590]Rachel Lindhart: i'm trying to pull it up here right now on our calendar, it looks like it's scheduled for Sunday August 29 from one to 3pm.
- [00:39:42.900]Rachel Lindhart: Yes, and I can type the I can I was just looking at the bigger welcome schedule, so I can type the link in there, so you can see the and get more access to that information.
- [00:39:53.730]Kerra Russell: Thank you.
- [00:39:56.760]Rachel Lindhart: I can send this.
- [00:39:59.760]Rachel Lindhart: In my follow up email as well.
- [00:40:01.980]Kerra Russell: Okay.
- [00:40:02.430]Rachel Lindhart: Question it's always a fantastic event.
- [00:40:06.450]Rachel Lindhart: i'm going to send out we've moved through all the questions that we've gotten this far so i'm going to toss out last call for questions here, and while we do that, I will invite Kara to give a final plug for how you can find oasis and get connected with them in person or online yeah.
- [00:40:25.200]Kerra Russell: yeah so you can go to our website, we have I didn't include all of our social media platforms on here, but we do have a Twitter page.

- [00:41:23.040]Rachel Lindhart: Thank you so much Kara and we did have another question here for those that are required to be involved with that basis, do we have to do we attend every meeting.
- [00:41:34.110]Kerra Russell: Every.
- [00:41:35.340]Kerra Russell: Like the the check in meetings with your peer mentor and staff mentor.
- [00:41:42.150]Rachel Lindhart: I would say, I guess what are the requirements for students who are involved in the oasis seminar.
- [00:41:46.950]Rachel Lindhart: We can make you walk in us.
- [00:41:48.690]Kerra Russell: Yes, so requirements for first year students within the first year are.
- [00:41:56.730]Kerra Russell: attending the 11 week seminar i'm meeting with the peer mentor and your staff mentor twice a semester mid semester grade check.
- [00:42:08.880]Kerra Russell: Study hours are required, the first year first year for the fall and spring after that they're optional and attending three events per semester.
- [00:42:23.490]Kerra Russell: As an upper class student you're only required to attend to events and meet with your peer mentor and oasis staff mentor once a semester, unless you want to meet more than that.
- [00:42:36.240]Kerra Russell: As upper class students, we we kind of cut down our requirements, because we know students are involved with other things so i'm not as many meetings or as many events to attain as an upper class to you.
- [00:42:52.080]Rachel Lindhart: I promise it won't even feel like requirements are hard work, because it's just a fantastic way to like naturally connect you with campus i'm with resources and with events so you will be you will be flying for those requirements.
- [00:43:09.420]Rachel Lindhart: With no problem.
- [00:43:10.710]Rachel Lindhart: yeah Okay, so we, we do have a couple sessions next week we'll be meeting with.
- [00:43:16.710]Rachel Lindhart: The offices study abroad and you undergraduate research, as well as internships to talk about some out of classroom experience opportunities if you're interested in that.
- [00:43:27.390]Rachel Lindhart: As well as supporting your students, while being so will be hosting.
- [00:43:31.230]Rachel Lindhart: counseling and psychological services, the help Center and our big red resilience and well being program on Wednesday of next week, so I hope that you'll join us for those.
