- [00:00:02.562]Nebraska is the good life
- [00:00:04.070]but like much of the nation,
- [00:00:05.570]the state is grappling with health issues
- [00:00:07.780]related to drug use.
- [00:00:09.440]We are seeing overdoses,
- [00:00:10.640]we're seeing overdose deaths increase locally.
- [00:00:13.660]Ryan Herrschaft and his colleagues
- [00:00:15.310]at the Rural Drug Addition Research Center paint a picture
- [00:00:18.660]of what's happening across the state.
- [00:00:21.270]From 2018 to 2019,
- [00:00:23.580]overdose deaths involving psychostimulants,
- [00:00:26.310]drugs like methamphetamine and cocaine rose almost 60%.
- [00:00:31.170]The state experienced a large increase in admissions
- [00:00:34.090]to publicly funded centered for treatment
- [00:00:36.400]of methamphetamine use disorder up 200%
- [00:00:39.940]over a 10-year period.
- [00:00:41.830]In Nebraska we actually see
- [00:00:43.520]more overdose deaths attributable
- [00:00:45.840]to psychostimulants, such methamphetamine
- [00:00:48.360]than we do attributable to synthetic opioids.
- [00:00:52.440]From 2014 to 2020,
- [00:00:54.440]only 2/3 of the death certificates
- [00:00:56.580]for overdose cases listed a specific drug as the cause.
- [00:01:00.910]So that means we have about 25% of overdose deaths
- [00:01:03.810]in Nebraska where we don't know what specific drug
- [00:01:06.520]is contributing to that overdose or causing that overdose.
- [00:01:10.140]And that means that we are likely under counting some
- [00:01:14.510]of our deaths that would be attributable to methamphetamine
- [00:01:17.250]or synthetic opioids if an investigation was done.
- [00:01:20.490]Researchers say it's important
- [00:01:22.320]to track the numbers
- [00:01:23.460]because rural areas don't get as much attention
- [00:01:26.240]as their urban coutnerparts.
- [00:01:28.360]That can kind of hide the problem
- [00:01:31.500]or just hide what's going on.
- [00:01:33.120]And we want to know what's going on in our environment
- [00:01:36.100]so we can address it in the most appropriate way
- [00:01:38.710]and come up with evidence-based policy
- [00:01:41.050]and evidence-based public health initiatives around it.
- [00:01:44.130]More research is needed to understand drug use
- [00:01:46.760]and related health problems.
- [00:01:48.330]Tracking the numbers is the first step.
