- [00:00:06.208]XtendFlex Soybean is a new Soybean trait,
- [00:00:09.030]came to the market in 2019.
- [00:00:12.580]So what do we mean by XtendFlex Soybean?
- [00:00:14.870]So XtendFlex Soybean is resistant
- [00:00:16.680]to three different herbicides.
- [00:00:18.890]That includes Glyphosate, Glufosinate, and Dicamba.
- [00:00:22.550]Means active ingredient in RoundUp, Liberty,
- [00:00:26.260]and XtendiMax type of herbicides.
- [00:00:28.880]The main idea of this new trait is
- [00:00:31.290]it will provide more opportunity to growers
- [00:00:33.280]to use some additional post-emergent herbicide
- [00:00:35.950]with alternate, more effects,
- [00:00:37.570]and to control Glyphosate-resistant weeds.
- [00:00:41.460]So, for example, we have at least six weeds in Nebraska
- [00:00:44.640]are resistant to Glyphosate,
- [00:00:46.090]including waterhemp,
- [00:00:47.211]and palmer amaranth, and marestail,
- [00:00:49.840]kochia, giant ragweed, common ragweed.
- [00:00:52.240]So, you will not able to control them
- [00:00:55.040]by applying Glyphosate.
- [00:00:56.260]So, if you have XtendFlex Soybean,
- [00:00:58.080]that will give you an opportunity to apply
- [00:01:00.585]Dicamba-based herbicides post-emergence,
- [00:01:03.050]or you can also use Glufosinate-based herbicides,
- [00:01:06.220]such as Liberty or Interline post-emergence
- [00:01:09.010]in XtendFlex Soybean.
- [00:01:10.948]For example, in this plot,
- [00:01:13.320]Metribuzin was applied pre-emergence,
- [00:01:15.400]and then, a follow-up application of XtendiMax,
- [00:01:19.360]which is a Dicamba-based herbicide,
- [00:01:21.170]and then, RoundUp which is Glyphosate.
- [00:01:23.420]So, we are seeing very good control.
- [00:01:26.480]Last year it was corn in this field.
- [00:01:28.339]So, again, we have very good corn residues,
- [00:01:31.070]and soybean was planted no-till.
- [00:01:33.220]And then, pre-emergence herbicide was applied,
- [00:01:35.440]and it was followed by a post-emergence application
- [00:01:38.500]of a mixture of Dicamba and Glyphosate.
- [00:01:42.710]And, majority of the grass weeds are killed here,
- [00:01:45.390]because of the presence of Glyphosate,
- [00:01:47.190]and also, broadleaf weeds were limited
- [00:01:51.170]and they were also killed by Dicamba-based herbicide.
- [00:01:55.640]For example, this Palmer Amaranth
- [00:01:57.650]is showing symptoms of Dicamba.
- [00:01:59.948]These are very typical symptoms of Dicamba,
- [00:02:02.150]twisting of the main stem,
- [00:02:03.660]as well as the leaf-cupping
- [00:02:06.840]and I'm sure this plant will eventually die
- [00:02:09.390]after a week or so,
- [00:02:10.310]because Dicamba is a systemic herbicide,
- [00:02:12.320]and it just takes some time
- [00:02:14.250]to show the complete killing of the weed species.
- [00:02:18.140]For example, in this plot Metribuzin
- [00:02:19.800]was applied pre-emergence,
- [00:02:21.400]within a couple of days after planting soybean.
- [00:02:24.040]And then, post emergence application
- [00:02:25.830]of Glyphosate mixed with Glufosinate.
- [00:02:29.232]So, that's again a good combination.
- [00:02:32.453]These are typical symptoms of
- [00:02:37.450]Glufosinate-based herbicide.
- [00:02:38.720]It's a contact herbicide,
- [00:02:39.890]so it has provided a very good killing
- [00:02:41.940]of this palmer amaranth,
- [00:02:44.100]which was at least five inch tall
- [00:02:46.140]at the time of herbicide application.
- [00:02:48.760]Plus, Glyphosate was also in the mixture,
- [00:02:51.180]so it has provided good control of
- [00:02:53.260]a majority of the grasses,
- [00:02:56.360]as glyphosate is a very good grass killer.
- [00:02:59.330]So, the take home message from XtendFlex Soybean is,
- [00:03:03.170]this is a new trait,
- [00:03:04.270]and it will provide an opportunity
- [00:03:06.150]to apply some additional post-emergence herbicides
- [00:03:08.870]such as Dicamba, or Glufosinate,
- [00:03:11.780]or you can also tank mix them based on your requirement.
- [00:03:16.720]So, overall, it's a good system.
- [00:03:18.640]It has provided excellent crop safety
- [00:03:21.370]when we applied all three herbicides.
- [00:03:25.180]Post-emergence, for example,
- [00:03:27.198]combination of Glyphosate and Liberty
- [00:03:29.960]has provided excellent weed control,
- [00:03:32.610]as well as, we also have a lot of broadleaf weeds,
- [00:03:35.170]such as waterhemp and palmer amaranth in this field,
- [00:03:37.760]and a combination of Glyphosate and Dicamba
- [00:03:40.530]has provided a very good control of the broadleaf
- [00:03:43.654]as well as the grass weeds that we do have in this field.
- [00:03:47.370]Again, do not rely only on post-emergence application,
- [00:03:50.300]although this XtendFlex Soybean is resistant
- [00:03:52.630]to three post-emergence herbicides,
- [00:03:54.380]but we still recommend to start
- [00:03:56.990]with a very good pre-emergence herbicide
- [00:03:59.220]applied at planting,
- [00:04:00.320]or within three days of planting soybean.
- [00:04:02.740]And then, consider applying post-emergence herbicide,
- [00:04:06.720]such as Dicamba or Glufosinate.
- [00:04:09.533]Particularly in XtendFlex Soybean,
- [00:04:11.870]which is resistant to three different
- [00:04:13.670]post-emergence herbicides including Glyphosate.
