- [00:26:41.370]Emily Wilber (she/her): oops.
- [00:26:43.800]Emily Wilber (she/her): So this is one page a snapshot of one campus job search, we ran and there really are more jobs and just with campus right this just happened to be what came up when we ran this search.
- [00:26:57.180]Emily Wilber (she/her): On the left there more jobs appear under lifeguard you just scroll through those and the one you select will appear fully to the right so you'll see the job description which includes qualifications.
- [00:27:10.620]Emily Wilber (she/her): any particular scheduling needs and the duties of the of the role.
- [00:27:16.920]Emily Wilber (she/her): There are a wide variety of jobs on campus from intramural sports, of course, as you see here sales staff office assistant barista lab assistant food server landscape worker and many others.
- [00:27:35.400]Emily Wilber (she/her): Another question that's related to that is how do I find a work, study job.
- [00:27:40.440]Emily Wilber (she/her): Work study is a form of financial aid awarded to some students, as part of their financial aid package, the award is earned through a job, funded by the work, study Program.
- [00:27:51.720]Emily Wilber (she/her): If you have any questions on qualifying for work, study, including, if you have been awarded work, study for the coming academic year.
- [00:27:59.220]Emily Wilber (she/her): Contact husker hub here at husker hub ul.edu or four to 4722030 husker hub is like the customer service branch of the office of scholarships and financial aid and can answer your questions in that regard.
- [00:28:16.530]Emily Wilber (she/her): If you know you have work, study and are looking for such a job, like the others we've mentioned, you can find those in handshake.
- [00:28:28.710]Emily Wilber (she/her): works day jobs can be specifically searched for and handshake through the filters, just like campus jobs not connected to work, study, so you simply add one more filter and the work save jobs will be shown.
- [00:28:43.740]Emily Wilber (she/her): This is just the top of the list of work say jobs available when we when we ran this search as an example works two jobs include the same types of positions as other campus jobs.
- [00:28:54.660]Emily Wilber (she/her): Such as office assistant library aid in front desk positions it just depends on how the employer how the department has chosen to set it up.
- [00:29:04.050]Emily Wilber (she/her): Some are cross listed, so you might see some on the on campus list and in the work city of job listing and feel free if you have a work, study award.
- [00:29:13.080]Emily Wilber (she/her): To look at the campus jobs, and if you see a position of interest you can approach that employer to see if their job, can also be set up as a work, study job.
- [00:29:23.730]Emily Wilber (she/her): By being in the word study listings it just means that they are restricted to work, study, students, whereas the campus jobs may be open to either students with work, study or without.
- [00:29:40.680]Emily Wilber (she/her): As mentioned the application processes competitive for any job on campus work steady or not here are a few tips to help you succeed in the application process.
- [00:29:52.980]Emily Wilber (she/her): update your resume that was one of the takeaways and a survey of campus employers 50% required a resume.
- [00:30:00.180]Emily Wilber (she/her): handshake allows you to submit a resume directly to the system and to employers, additionally, when asked what advice, they would give to students seeking a campus job.
- [00:30:11.040]Emily Wilber (she/her): Most campus employers indicated students should prepare a professional resume the type of resume they are looking for is different than what your high school resume might look like.
- [00:30:24.960]Emily Wilber (she/her): This is an example of what we think of as a transitional resume one that includes experiences from high school but highlights what you did specifically.
- [00:30:33.570]Emily Wilber (she/her): To complete an activity or what and how you achieve something rather than just a list of all your activities.
- [00:30:40.260]Emily Wilber (she/her): For example, on her bs resume he describes what his role on the marching band required in his case he earned first Chair position out of 20 other students based on leadership skills as well as performance ability.
- [00:30:53.250]Emily Wilber (she/her): He also describes his volunteer work and is part time job duties and the skills needed to complete them.
- [00:30:59.730]Emily Wilber (she/her): This is the type of resume campus employers are looking for resources on careers you and l.edu and career coaches can help you develop your resume in this way.
- [00:31:10.680]Emily Wilber (she/her): And you can connect with a career coach even before the start of the school year just by going to our website or contacting university career services to get connected to your team.
- [00:31:23.760]Emily Wilber (she/her): You don't often need experience directly in the job you're applying for they are looking for they're often looking for transferable skills transferable skills are skills you use in many situations.
- [00:31:35.520]Emily Wilber (she/her): These are the skills campus employers reporting looking looking for high on their list are adaptability teamwork attention to detail and communication skills.
- [00:31:46.590]Emily Wilber (she/her): These are skills, you have demonstrated in many roles from part time jobs or summer jobs leadership positions class projects or any number of activities, you can with work with a career coach to effectively communicate your skills in a resume.
- [00:32:03.180]Emily Wilber (she/her): Here are a few more tips.
- [00:32:05.640]Emily Wilber (she/her): follow the instructions in the job description.
- [00:32:08.490]Emily Wilber (she/her): Every Department on campus and off campus has their own hiring process which may include an online application or sending a resume through handshake or both.
- [00:32:18.360]Emily Wilber (she/her): Following application instructions, such as including your schedule or a cover letter shows that you can follow directions and pay attention to details qualities all employers look for.
- [00:32:29.850]Emily Wilber (she/her): Resources on careers@ul.edu and career coaches can help you develop a cover letter that is necessary.
- [00:32:36.840]Emily Wilber (she/her): apply for several and keep applying is another important tip you do not have to wait to hear from one employer before applying for the next.
- [00:32:45.390]Emily Wilber (she/her): If you accepted position, however, it is polite to notify the other employers you've applied to to withdraw your application.
- [00:32:53.940]Emily Wilber (she/her): Be sure also to watch for and respond to emails from employer reaching out to you, which is the primary way they'll reach out and connect with you about the second step in the application process.
- [00:33:06.570]Emily Wilber (she/her): Also, you can reach out to employer, if an employer, if you do not hear from them within a week of submitting your application, it will demonstrate your initiative communication skills and sincere interest in the position and may move your application to the next step in the process.
- [00:33:23.700]Emily Wilber (she/her): You may also reach out to departments of interest, even if you don't see them advertising and handshake.
- [00:33:29.700]Emily Wilber (she/her): If you are interested in working at the lead Center, for example, send them an email or consider inquiring with your academic department.
- [00:33:37.830]Emily Wilber (she/her): They may know of a professor in your major who needs students staff or maybe they need help in the main office Either way, it is a great way to get to know people in the department.
- [00:33:53.250]Emily Wilber (she/her): Your campus job shirt search should start in July, which I afraid stays now it's gone really fast as summer is going really fast.
- [00:34:01.410]Emily Wilber (she/her): But based on trends we see in campus employer postings july's the time they start to appear and they don't all appear, you know, right at the start of the of the month they'll continue to grow.
- [00:34:12.930]Emily Wilber (she/her): So that's why you want to check regularly for new positions and apply early to be one of the first applicants.
- [00:34:23.070]Emily Wilber (she/her): So before we move on to other questions, let me remind you of your action items to activate your handshake account as soon as you're enrolled for credit hours find your career coach and update your resume.
- [00:34:38.340]Emily Wilber (she/her): and
- [00:34:40.320]Emily Wilber (she/her): follow us on social media to keep up to date on career news events resources and other programs.
- [00:34:49.980]Emily Wilber (she/her): So now i'm going to turn it over to you, and whatever questions you might have.
- [00:34:56.100]Rachel Lindhart: In testing Emily Thank you so much, and as you can tell, we have a resident expert with us this evening on all things job search and career support at ul so please send those questions through.
- [00:35:08.730]Rachel Lindhart: As I mentioned at the beginning, we have that Q amp a box, the question and answer box on your control panel, so you can click that send your your questions into Emily while we wrap up here so.
- [00:35:20.640]Rachel Lindhart: Please bring those in and Emily I do have a couple questions for you as well, first more to come through from our participants um My first question is how often can students meet with a career coach in the university career Center with university career services.
- [00:35:37.590]Emily Wilber (she/her): Oh um there's no limit, they can connect with a career coach as often as they.
- [00:35:43.410]Emily Wilber (she/her): are in an interest in doing so I think it's a good idea to connect with your career coach at least once a semester, just to see that you're on track.
- [00:35:52.380]Emily Wilber (she/her): to know what might be up next for you, for example, we think sophomores should start looking for internships about their second semester.
- [00:36:02.190]Emily Wilber (she/her): But that's, not to say that only some sophomores can get internships, you know if you're a freshman who's had some experience there are employers who would be happy to receive your application to so.
- [00:36:14.370]Emily Wilber (she/her): In some some students work with a career coach several times made me on a personal statement for Grad school because that's a long document it takes a little bit more thought and.
- [00:36:25.020]Emily Wilber (she/her): You know intent, and so it just depends on the purpose and the time for the student, but we also i'll say work with alumni so even once you're outside of the university, we can help you with those job searches for your ears second or third and so forth kind of job.
- [00:36:43.440]Rachel Lindhart: wow what a fantastic source of longitudinal support for a student throughout their career and beyond that's wonderful yeah Okay, the next question where do students find the handshake account or maybe, could you talk about what login or how they log into handshake as well.
- [00:37:00.180]Emily Wilber (she/her): yeah i'm from our site so from careers that you l.edu there's there's a button up at the right hand corner.
- [00:37:09.810]Emily Wilber (she/her): That just says handshake and if you just click on that you'll be prompted to login and you'll use the same login you you've used to log into my read.
- [00:37:19.530]Emily Wilber (she/her): To my plan to the libraries to really any system that the University has has set up it's a universal login, so to speak, so you should be able to just find it on our website up in the right hand corner and then use your new ID and password for that.
- [00:37:39.810]Rachel Lindhart: include a clickable link to that too, and my email that I send out my follow up email tomorrow.
- [00:37:44.100]Emily Wilber (she/her): Oh yes.
- [00:37:44.910]Rachel Lindhart: i'm The next question i'm still unclear as to the difference between work, study and a regular campus job, could you please clarify those two and how they might know if their work, study.
- [00:37:54.960]Emily Wilber (she/her): Yes, it can be complicated so you're not alone.
- [00:37:59.610]Emily Wilber (she/her): So it's really just a matter of where the funds come from, so a campus job that's not designated somehow as work, study that department is not relying on a work, study funding program to pay that student, so a work, study job, on the other hand, is paid.
- [00:38:19.350]Emily Wilber (she/her): In a large part by the Federal financial aid that student has received so some departments set up their jobs as worst day jobs.
- [00:38:29.970]Emily Wilber (she/her): As part of their budget saving efforts other other departments don't rely on work, study.
- [00:38:37.950]Emily Wilber (she/her): So their campus jobs may be open to any student, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't welcome work, study student and be able to set it up.
- [00:38:47.940]Emily Wilber (she/her): As a work, study job I mean it's really kind of invisible once you get the job it's it's just like any other hourly job you get paid every other week in an hourly position.
- [00:38:58.920]Emily Wilber (she/her): And as far as work city goes you get to use that financial aid any way you want it's it's discretionary in that sense, you don't it doesn't have to go to tuition or anything like that.
- [00:39:11.490]Emily Wilber (she/her): And, of course, the same with the camps job you'd Those are just you know dollars you earn, and they are deposited to your account.
- [00:39:20.520]Emily Wilber (she/her): On every other week, and if you have questions about how you qualify, and like what the eligibility requirements are i'll have to defer to husker hub.
- [00:39:30.660]Emily Wilber (she/her): They are the office that that manages the financial aid, and I know you know you receive a lot of information and, once you enroll are once you say i'm in so don't hesitate to reach out to them, and they can help you kind of clarify what you're eligible for.
- [00:39:53.430]Rachel Lindhart: Thank you Emily The next question, we can assume have more than one on campus job.
- [00:39:58.950]Emily Wilber (she/her): Yes, they can, as a matter of fact um.
- [00:40:03.330]Emily Wilber (she/her): There are some limits if you're an international student, you can only work so many hours per week.
- [00:40:12.360]Emily Wilber (she/her): And if you are a work, study student, you may you may earn your financial aid award a little quicker if you're working in a couple of jobs, but I know students who are working certainly more than one job on campus.
- [00:40:28.950]Rachel Lindhart: Are the on campus jobs for the entire school for the entire school year or they just for the Semester.
- [00:40:35.100]Emily Wilber (she/her): Most of that's a great question most jobs are really for the academic year and.
- [00:40:39.990]Emily Wilber (she/her): Another question that has come up in our live in se is do students have to reapply for them, the next year, so you have that job from fall to spring, but then you have to reapply.
- [00:40:51.210]Emily Wilber (she/her): Well, most employers, that is not the case, most employers would love for you to come back and continue your work with them, and maybe you take on even more responsibility, the second year.
- [00:41:02.700]Emily Wilber (she/her): So it's it's typical that you would have the opportunity to just stay in that position, there are a few jobs where you might have to reapply like mentor positions or some specialized programs, but most important on campus love students who stayed from you know one year to the next.
- [00:41:23.100]Rachel Lindhart: We hire dozens of students each year selfish plug to consider applying for a new student enrollment.
- [00:41:30.180]Rachel Lindhart: We would not be able to do it without student student employees and I think that a lot of a lot of campus organizations could echo that sentiment Emily.
- [00:41:38.250]Rachel Lindhart: what's your yeah what's your number one piece of advice as as a professional as a career coach what's your number one piece of advice for new students and regards to the employment realm.
- [00:41:52.260]Emily Wilber (she/her): um if I had to narrow it down to one, I would say.
- [00:41:57.780]Emily Wilber (she/her): Keep career on your mind you'll get really busy, and your academics will get to start feeling sometimes super overwhelming and career.
- [00:42:08.250]Emily Wilber (she/her): is something that's kind of easy to put off like Oh, I have to think about getting an internship or I should join us your organization, so I can get some leadership skills.
- [00:42:17.070]Emily Wilber (she/her): or I should go to that event, so I can meet some professionals in my field, but I have a test tomorrow.
- [00:42:24.750]Emily Wilber (she/her): So it's now that you have to go to everything or do everything but make it a part of every semester, and then you'll be moving forward and some semesters you may do more things than others.
- [00:42:38.490]Emily Wilber (she/her): But don't let it be something that you just kind of keep putting aside keep it in your mind and keep moving forward.
- [00:42:48.240]Rachel Lindhart: awesome thanks Emily both four plus years called by in a blink of an eye don't they.
- [00:42:54.180]Emily Wilber (she/her): They do, and it doesn't feel like it when you're in it, but then you know it's it's time to look for that after graduation job.
- [00:43:03.240]Rachel Lindhart: yeah yeah so true all right, well, I think those are all the questions Oh, I see another one here.
- [00:43:10.560]Rachel Lindhart: Let me process this question quick, so I will send out what kind of final call for last questions for you to move through that list, but we do have another question here.
- [00:43:24.060]Rachel Lindhart: So Emily this is in regards to covert implications on work, study position so.
- [00:43:30.060]Rachel Lindhart: The question is my impression is some federal work, study paid jobs, last year, like many jobs on campus were affected by Kobe our student would like to fulfill his work, study, a word what jobs are essential or we're not affected as much by potential return of Kobe concerns.
- [00:43:45.780]Emily Wilber (she/her): um well you're right there were a number of jobs affected by coven because we just didn't have the in person activity that we would have otherwise, but the University has taken a strong position that we are an in person campus and that.
- [00:44:01.170]Emily Wilber (she/her): Any service that we possibly can, will be will be offering in person, of course, of courses will be online, just as you know, some were always.
- [00:44:11.370]Emily Wilber (she/her): But so to that I expect that hiring will be up so like the libraries will have to maintain their staff and they are open, I mean I think 24 seven almost and Campus recreation is open on long days, as is the Union.
- [00:44:30.390]Emily Wilber (she/her): And so, those are still functions that those aren't those organizations, still have to stay open, they still have to serve students, just as the residence halls do residence life is an area where they have to provide.
- [00:44:42.870]Emily Wilber (she/her): Services, I mean again almost 24 seven so there's desk assistance there's dining services.
- [00:44:50.340]Emily Wilber (she/her): So there are some jobs, I think that are are just have to be in person and have to serve students.
- [00:44:59.580]Emily Wilber (she/her): face to face, and I think those are some of them, but I think.
- [00:45:04.080]Emily Wilber (she/her): Most this year really will be kind of back in play, unless.
- [00:45:10.560]Emily Wilber (she/her): You know the department has really changed our operation, but that would be the exception, I think.
- [00:45:20.100]Rachel Lindhart: there's another good question here which types of work, study jobs or student employee jobs actually increase in hours before or during finals are there some jobs that have more hours earlier on in the Semester.
- [00:45:36.510]Emily Wilber (she/her): I would, I don't know of a specific one i'm trying to think of an example where like their cycle of activity just slows down towards the end of the Semester i'm sure there are organizations like that, but what I can say is.
- [00:45:52.080]Emily Wilber (she/her): One of the great things about working on campuses we are about students, we want you to succeed academically so we're going to.
- [00:46:01.980]Emily Wilber (she/her): In almost any case be flexible with you around finals week and around other times, if you, for example, give your employer a heads up like in two to three weeks I know i'm going to have a week where I have to test a paper.
- [00:46:16.260]Emily Wilber (she/her): And you know, a couple of quizzes you know you could probably give that employer a heads up and say, could I back off some hours that week.
- [00:46:24.780]Emily Wilber (she/her): And that would be true to have finals week in most cases, now kind of going back to the last question dining services is still going to have to provide dining services for their students.
- [00:46:37.620]Emily Wilber (she/her): So there are going to be some jobs where you'll still be working, but maybe the hours are fewer that week.
- [00:46:44.940]Emily Wilber (she/her): But I would say what's most important is stay in communication with your employer, you know talk to your supervisor tell them what you'll be needing for finals week or for fizzy weeks during the year and that's going to go a long way to helping you kind of FLEX those hours.
- [00:47:05.430]Rachel Lindhart: awesome fantastic questions, thank you for now i'm seeing no further I will invite me to give a final plug here on how to get in touch with the university career services on campus or before Aaron can.
- [00:47:19.980]Emily Wilber (she/her): yeah well um well.
- [00:47:21.960]Emily Wilber (she/her): We are easy to reach we're career services@ul.edu sometimes an email is.
- [00:47:29.910]Emily Wilber (she/her): as easy as anything of course you can give us a call, but if you email us, you can kind of give what question you have, and then we can get you either directed to the career coaching team that most.
- [00:47:41.490]Emily Wilber (she/her): might be most appropriate or we can just give you the answer right there get you connected handshake or whatever kind of question you have so email or phone is probably the easiest.
- [00:47:52.800]Emily Wilber (she/her): And you know we are on social media mostly as a way to communicate our events and our new resources and success stories and things like that, so if you follow us on social you'll learn a lot about what's out there.
