- [00:09:46.320]Rachel Lindhart: They were able to sign up for it and that's how they got the link.
- [00:09:50.010]Rachel Lindhart: or not Rachel it and tell me how many were expecting so i'm not sure what.
- [00:09:55.560]Dan Hutt: Is it students or parents.
- [00:09:58.050]Dan Hutt: Either either one.
- [00:10:00.120]mm hmm.
- [00:10:02.700]Dan Hutt: In state out of state or who knows.
- [00:10:05.640]Rachel Lindhart: Just anybody we gave it to is we promote it really heavily in the online orientation, but I think Rachel also emails out to everybody so.
- [00:10:14.280]Dan Hutt: Go ahead sure.
- [00:16:37.440]Rachel Lindhart: Hello everyone we're going to go ahead and get started uh welcome to our webinar on first Generation Students support or just going to go ahead and jump right in.
- [00:16:48.900]Rachel Lindhart: we're going to introduce ourselves, my name is Emily klezmer I am the ordination coordinator in new student enrollment and i'll let the other 200 just themselves here.
- [00:17:00.060]Dan Hutt: hi i'm Dan hut and I, since this slide was made my behavior has improved and as a result, so as my job title i'm now senior program coordinator, with the Center for academic success and transition, otherwise known as cast.
- [00:17:21.540]Kerra Russell: And, good evening everyone, my name is Karen Russell i'm the associate director at the Jackie gun multicultural Center and the office of academic success and intercultural services, also known as oasis.
- [00:17:38.970]Rachel Lindhart: Wonderful before we get started here just a little overview of today's agenda will be talking over some first gen support and experience will do some frequently asked questions and then we will have a live question and answer at the end.
- [00:17:52.230]Rachel Lindhart: Just as you may have noticed, we are in the webinar format of zoom so you won't have your camera or your microphone available, but we do have the chat feature you're welcome to use, you can introduce yourself.
- [00:18:03.750]Rachel Lindhart: But we also have the Q amp a feature where you can ask questions directly to Karen Dan if you would like to ask them anything about what we're going through, and then we are recording this and that will be available for you later on, so right in Dana care take it away.
- [00:18:27.690]Dan Hutt: All right.
- [00:18:31.080]Dan Hutt: let's see i'm not sure if I okay there we go yeah Dan hot here with you and I think we'll start off our discussion with.
- [00:18:39.780]Dan Hutt: Some terminology and right to the point, what does it mean to be first generation, while the technical definition of that phrase is that neither parent or guardian of the student.
- [00:18:54.240]Dan Hutt: holds a four year degree that's the bare bones definition, but even there.
- [00:19:00.900]Dan Hutt: Is there are a lot of variations right, perhaps the parent or guardian holds a two year degree or has some college experience or maybe there's a sibling that has a college degree or.
- [00:19:13.080]Dan Hutt: has some experience or maybe as even in college now so people come with a lot of different experiences and from a lot of different backgrounds.
- [00:19:22.740]Dan Hutt: Even though they're all perhaps under the umbrella term first gen now.
- [00:19:28.170]Dan Hutt: This is important to know, because you can't make a lot of assumptions necessarily with the first gen college student who may or may not come with a playbook.
- [00:19:38.820]Dan Hutt: about what college is in all of the nuances and the terminology so it's important to know, and I think the central point that we want to.
- [00:19:48.810]Dan Hutt: drive home today is that there is a lot of support and a huge apparatus of support and resources for your first gen college student here at the University of nebraska and some of that support looks like this oh.
- [00:20:05.700]Dan Hutt: Here we go yeah some of the the the support is student driven and i'll start with that.
- [00:20:13.020]Dan Hutt: there's a first gen rsl recognized student organization otherwise just known as a club at ul that it's completely student driven.
- [00:20:24.810]Dan Hutt: And they do lots of fun events, many of those students live in a first gen learning community, which is a floor section of the Florida.
- [00:20:35.160]Dan Hutt: Residence hall with all first gen students and all of those students would be part of the first husker program part of cast programming i'll talk more about that in just a moment.
- [00:20:47.910]Dan Hutt: And there's another group yet called the first gen nebraska initiative, and this is a faculty staff and students organization and they do lots of fun activities they have.
- [00:21:02.310]Dan Hutt: An event called welcome back waffles that everybody gets together to launch the Semester off and has waffles together for breakfast they do a share a meal program which pairs of first gen.
- [00:21:16.140]Dan Hutt: faculty Member with a student or a table of students to have lunch for conversation.
- [00:21:22.830]Dan Hutt: And they they have book club events, sometimes they go to East campus to the dairy store for ice cream and you see the the symbol on the top right of the screen there that says first gen with that.
- [00:21:36.780]Dan Hutt: The end that symbol is ubiquitous on campus and that signifies that that person in that office.
- [00:21:44.370]Dan Hutt: Is first gen and a friendly face accordingly, so you get the sense of the huge APP Arad, I have support and resources for your first gen college student available at ul and one of those resources as well.
- [00:22:00.840]Dan Hutt: Is the office of academic success and intercultural services oasis and with that i'll turn it over to Kara.
- [00:22:12.420]Dan Hutt: hmm it doesn't seem to be advancing a week, can you do it on your end.
- [00:22:19.350]Dan Hutt: There we go.
- [00:22:20.460]Kerra Russell: Oh, thank you all right, yes, again, my name is Kara Russell a little bit about our office we do pride ourselves on our mission, which is to enhance student success.
- [00:22:32.340]Kerra Russell: By promoting academic excellence diversity awareness and social engagement.
- [00:22:37.950]Kerra Russell: We know that it's difficult for students coming to college, so are the main goal and objective of our office is to make sure that students have a smooth transition.
- [00:22:48.510]Kerra Russell: from high school to college and that we are providing you with all of the necessary resources, you need without overwhelming you at the same time.
- [00:22:58.290]Kerra Russell: We do serve all students, but we do have an emphasis on students of color students who identify as low income and students that are first generation.
- [00:23:08.730]Kerra Russell: saw earlier Dan mentioned the first gen sticker the majority of our staff are actually virgins so.
- [00:23:17.130]Kerra Russell: We can relate to students and we know the type of struggles and obstacles that you'll deal with coming to the university and we want to be a support system for you to make sure that you're successful while you're here.
- [00:23:32.220]Kerra Russell: Another part about our program is required for students, that are receiving certain diversity enhancement scholarships, but again it's open to all students, so if you are not a student that's receiving any of this scholarships that are affiliated with our office.
- [00:23:49.860]Kerra Russell: You can either contact our staff or we also have a website or a form on our website for interested students to reach out to us and get connected to our office as well.
- [00:24:04.590]Kerra Russell: Next slide please.
- [00:24:08.340]Dan Hutt: Can you do whatever we there we go okay great.
- [00:24:12.750]Kerra Russell: Oh no that's okay there we go Thank you.
- [00:24:16.830]Kerra Russell: We also have a student success program that comes with a seminar class, it is an 11 week zero credit pass no pass course so it's no additional cost to you.
- [00:24:29.790]Kerra Russell: We cover a lot of things that typically first year, our first Generation Students may not know necessarily we discuss things on time management study skills mental health and well being financial literacy.
- [00:24:45.870]Kerra Russell: Social engagement and other things that will help you along your journey at ul.
- [00:24:53.070]Kerra Russell: Students are paired with an oasis staff mentor as well as a peer mentor that you meet with throughout the Semester.
- [00:25:01.050]Kerra Russell: Twice this the first year program so you meet twice during the first year and then as an upper class student, those are narrowed down to once a semester, unless you choose to meet with us more than that.
- [00:25:15.480]Kerra Russell: We do mid semester great checks, just to kind of check in with students academically to see where they are, if you are needing any assistance, whether it's.
- [00:25:25.620]Kerra Russell: approaching a professor during office hours or if you're struggling and, of course, if you're needing additional assistance we can point you in the right direction, or we also have study studio where we provide free Tutoring to students, so that is also an option to you.
- [00:25:45.390]Kerra Russell: Gaining personal and professional skills for college and beyond beyond.
- [00:25:50.550]Kerra Russell: There are tons of different leadership opportunities within our office I mentioned our peer mentors that is a pain job, as well as our learning consultants at studies studio.
- [00:26:01.800]Kerra Russell: Both of bills are paying jobs, so if you're just wanting experience and getting paid for the things that you already know, definitely stop by our office, if you are interested in being involved so.
- [00:26:13.680]Kerra Russell: And then, lastly, diversity and social events These are a few pictures pre pandemic of events that we posted in the past.
- [00:26:24.660]Kerra Russell: Can we do a lot of different cultural heritage month celebrations the photo in the middle is.
- [00:26:31.830]Kerra Russell: On the Plaza at you went out during Hispanic heritage month, this is an event that we call fiesta on the green the photo on the Left was actually.
- [00:26:42.480]Kerra Russell: The oasis stroll off, which is an event where fraternities and sororities compete against one another.
- [00:26:50.970]Kerra Russell: we've now outgrown this space in the in the Union, so we are hoping to be at the lead Center this fall and then the picture to the far left is a few of our peer mentors so.
- [00:27:04.290]Kerra Russell: Great group of students, that also go on to take on different leadership opportunities on campus whether it is with oasis or cast.
- [00:27:15.300]Kerra Russell: I think oasis is a great place to start if you're looking to get involved, so please stop by and see yes, thank you, if you're interested.
- [00:27:25.470]Dan Hutt: Right, I think the next slide then great and I will testify CARA and crew over in oasis are terrific just top flight people, so I recommend their programs for sure, and a little bit about cast, and we do a lot of the same things in fact.
- [00:27:45.210]Dan Hutt: That Karen mentioned as well.
- [00:27:48.090]Dan Hutt: We meet one on one with students or in a workshop format to discuss all manner of academic skills and support.
- [00:27:57.150]Dan Hutt: Time management is a biggie in our office for sure also things like note taking strategies reading strategies critical thinking.
- [00:28:07.380]Dan Hutt: And we're kind of a catch all office sometimes as well, everybody on staff is very savvy as far as campus.
- [00:28:15.930]Dan Hutt: resources available, so we always say if we don't know the answer to your question, we probably know where to refer to you refer you accordingly that way.
- [00:28:26.550]Dan Hutt: Now, and the next slide I wanted to talk a little bit about a program that we have.
- [00:28:33.120]Dan Hutt: In particular that's called first husker and it's one of our central programs it's a program for first gen students and it works like this.
- [00:28:43.470]Dan Hutt: We bring your student onto campus four days earlier than the rest of the student population and acclimate them plug them into campus life and university life before.
- [00:28:56.730]Dan Hutt: 20,000 other students had campus on the first day of class and we really acclimate them we give them several peer mentors they have an instructor and really plugged them into.
- [00:29:09.060]Dan Hutt: What the expectations are and how to navigate this big university we walk them through their class schedule so.
- [00:29:17.190]Dan Hutt: When classes come that first week they know exactly where they're going and they could be calm cool cucumber that way I know nerves accordingly.
- [00:29:27.810]Dan Hutt: The program also includes a 12 week ongoing seminar course that continues that acclimation to college and we do a lot of fun events and activities and a speaker series.
- [00:29:43.020]Dan Hutt: As well throughout the year best part of first tusker is it's free 90 free.
- [00:29:49.860]Dan Hutt: But there are only 200 spots available, so if this seems like something that could be a good fit for you, I encourage you to enroll.
- [00:30:00.030]Dan Hutt: soon as possible, our website, you see there at the top, is really easy to remember it's success.eu and l.edu but I urge you to consider first husker if.
- [00:30:12.810]Dan Hutt: you're a first gen student, this is a fantastic program that would really plug into campus and be a great way to meet a lot of friends and replace that network from back home that made you such such a successful student in high school.
- [00:30:30.240]Dan Hutt: And I think that's my last piece.
- [00:30:34.530]Dan Hutt: Emily if there are any questions.
- [00:30:41.310]Rachel Lindhart: yeah it looks like we have a few i'm frequently asked questions if you are Kara want to cover any of those.
- [00:30:50.490]Kerra Russell: yeah sure I can take this first one, Dan.
- [00:30:53.250]Dan Hutt: yeah.
- [00:30:54.420]Kerra Russell: yeah So the first question, I have an older sibling in college, right now, does that mean i'm not first gen.
- [00:31:02.010]Kerra Russell: And at you until our first gen student is a student whose parents and guardians have not earned a four year degree as Dan mentioned so even if you do have a sibling or a cousin even if you have a parent that has earned their associates degree, you are still a first generation student.
- [00:31:29.040]Dan Hutt: Oh, I have an idea about this one my family doesn't understand why i'm so busy now how do I explain it to them.
- [00:31:38.460]Dan Hutt: Well, a good way to maybe begin that conversation what we always say is if you're doing it right, colleges and full time job there's something that exists on campus that's called the tutor one study ratio and.
- [00:31:57.600]Dan Hutt: It goes like this for every credit hour that you're registered for the expectation from the University, is that you'll study.
- [00:32:07.470]Dan Hutt: Two hours outside of class per week so let's say if you're taking 15 credit hours, which is a pretty standard course load for a lot of students.
- [00:32:18.150]Dan Hutt: That would then be 30 hours per week outside of class studying the minimum right now, you start doing the math on that you're already at 45 hours that's already passed a full time job so.
- [00:32:32.520]Dan Hutt: If you're doing it right that's what colleges and you're going to be busy Accordingly, we haven't even talked about many students have.
- [00:32:41.400]Dan Hutt: A part time job or they're involved with clubs or organizations that make demands on their time so that that makes one even busier right, so I think if you if you mentioned some of those perspectives on your new schedule, it probably will become much more understandable.
- [00:33:02.940]Kerra Russell: And to add to that the in class to add a class ratio is also flipped around.
- [00:33:08.670]Kerra Russell: yeah in high school, you were doing 80% of the work in class and 20% outside of class, whereas when you get to college it's about 20% in class and 80% of that is on your own so that will definitely take up a lot of your time.
- [00:33:26.220]Dan Hutt: Excellent point right what your parents remember being the situation study wise and homework wise in high school.
- [00:33:36.030]Dan Hutt: Is flipped on its head in college.
- [00:33:38.280]Excellent point.
- [00:33:44.040]Kerra Russell: Alright, so my students seems really overwhelmed and stressed out how can I help them so first just reminding them that they belong here and they worked really hard to get to you in a while so.
- [00:33:56.700]Kerra Russell: If if they weren't supposed to be here they wouldn't get accepted.
- [00:34:01.080]Kerra Russell: Just encouraging them and motivating them the best that you can Secondly, fighting the urge to tell them just come home and instead of saying, have you connected with cast or oasis staff.
- [00:34:14.550]Kerra Russell: There are tons of resources outside of cast in all cases, depending on what they're stressed out about that can help them, and I think we do a great job at ul.
- [00:34:26.820]Kerra Russell: of making sure that those resources are in place, I will say that it is very much up to the student to speak up whether it's to cast or oasis staff but.
- [00:34:38.130]Kerra Russell: We don't know what we don't know so if the student doesn't express that to us, then we won't be able to help them, but um yes please let them fight through it sometimes you have to you have to fall before you can get back up again so.
- [00:34:52.980]Dan Hutt: Well, said.
- [00:34:55.290]Dan Hutt: I like that I like that middle point as well for exactly dimensions, the reasons that you mentioned, your student has a lot of important mistakes to make.
- [00:35:07.830]Dan Hutt: Before he or she can figure it out, right in the university safe laboratory to do that kind of legwork so do resist that temptation to say just come home accordingly, and I hope that.
- [00:35:23.100]Dan Hutt: you've learned a little bit about the really amazing and growing apparatus at the University of first gen support if Kara and my voices sound friendly our faces are just as friendly so we would be glad to meet with your students at any time i'm sure of it.
- [00:35:43.710]Kerra Russell: And I like to refer to our staff similar to high school counselors.
- [00:35:49.590]Kerra Russell: Even though the parents aren't around to maybe do this build bills frequent check ins, those are what are checking in meetings or four so.
- [00:35:57.570]Kerra Russell: we're not just discussing how classes are going we're asking about their mental health if there's anything that they need in general.
- [00:36:05.100]Kerra Russell: And again, like Dan said, if there is something that we can't provide we can always point your student in the right direction.
- [00:36:13.500]Kerra Russell: And then, lastly, just listening and keeping the lines of communication open, whether you know the answers to all the questions or concerns that you may have just being a listening ear, I think, is is just as good so.
- [00:36:30.660]Kerra Russell: yep the next slide.
- [00:36:35.760]Rachel Lindhart: So that was all the frequently asked questions that we had if anyone has any questions you're welcome to put them in the chat or the Q amp a bubble, we did have to pop through the chat if Dan and CARA we each share where your offices are located that odd campus.
- [00:36:51.300]yeah.
- [00:36:53.580]Kerra Russell: oasis is located in the Jackie gun multicultural Center which is connected to the student Union our actual office is on the first floor.
- [00:37:03.510]Kerra Russell: So right there when you walk in you'll see our front desk workers, and we have a nice student lounge area where students like to hang out or just study and and meet new people so yeah they love to they call it a home away from home so it's a very.
- [00:37:22.110]Kerra Russell: Nice place to just hang out.
- [00:37:24.300]Dan Hutt: that's true, it is a comfy place over there.
- [00:37:27.420]Dan Hutt: we're in the library.
- [00:37:28.860]Dan Hutt: right in the middle of campus love library south.
- [00:37:33.870]Dan Hutt: So pretty easy to find that way, and I saw the other question from amy about your son enrolling and first husker.
- [00:37:43.260]Dan Hutt: that's a great decision.
- [00:37:46.080]Dan Hutt: i'm not sure if there's an.
- [00:37:48.900]Dan Hutt: automated email that is sent out but i'll do some checking on what is your son's name, if I might ask.
- [00:38:05.490]Dan Hutt: Daniel all right, our director is out of the Office, this week, but i'm going to do some digging in at least I will leave her a note and we'll we'll just make sure that Daniels signed up.
- [00:38:28.920]Rachel Lindhart: If anyone else has any questions feel free to pop them in the chat or the Q amp a bottle Now I will be here for a few more minutes if anyone has anything.
- [00:38:52.560]Rachel Lindhart: Why wait to see if anybody types anything in just so you know, we do have this is just the access emails and addresses and everything for cast and oasis.
