- [00:00:03.860]Hello, I'm Crystal Garcia.
- [00:00:05.962]My pronouns are she, her, and hers.
- [00:00:08.000]I'm an Assistant Professor in
- [00:00:09.197]Educational Administration,
- [00:00:10.850]specifically in the higher education side.
- [00:00:12.830]I teach in the masters and
- [00:00:14.236]the doctoral level programs.
- [00:00:16.100]And I'm also on the
- [00:00:17.497]Education Planning Team
- [00:00:18.864]for AFIRE within the
- [00:00:20.070]College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:00:22.520]I've been an assistant professor
- [00:00:23.853]at UNL since 2020.
- [00:00:25.717]Prior to that time,
- [00:00:26.930]I taught at Auburn University
- [00:00:28.726]for three years.
- [00:00:29.706]And previous to my time at Auburn,
- [00:00:32.030]I actually completed my Ph.D. here
- [00:00:34.332]in Educational Administration.
- [00:00:36.000]And so for me,
- [00:00:36.710]it was really like coming back home.
- [00:00:38.720]My research uses critical frameworks
- [00:00:41.046]to examine the experiences of
- [00:00:43.340]minoritized college students in
- [00:00:45.184]relation to their campus environments.
- [00:00:47.180]So a couple of examples of the studies
- [00:00:49.154]that I have engaged in have really kind of
- [00:00:51.212]focused around sorority and fraternity life
- [00:00:53.727]and specifically within the realm
- [00:00:55.396]of culturally based
- [00:00:56.417]sororities and fraternities.
- [00:00:57.650]So I've looked at the experiences of
- [00:00:59.276]queer men and queer women of color in
- [00:01:01.220]culturally based
- [00:01:01.925]sororities and fraternities.
- [00:01:03.470]I've also done some work to examine the
- [00:01:05.932]ways that student affairs professionals
- [00:01:08.000]make meaning of the terms,
- [00:01:09.798]diversity, equity, and inclusion,
- [00:01:11.840]and how they apply these
- [00:01:13.257]in the context of their work.
- [00:01:15.274]In terms of teaching.
- [00:01:16.460]I teach College Students in America,
- [00:01:18.500]as well as
- [00:01:19.146]Higher Education in America
- [00:01:20.752]among other courses.
- [00:01:22.520]And in terms of my
- [00:01:23.629]professional involvement,
- [00:01:25.100]I've been very engaged in ASH,
- [00:01:28.370]particularly within the realm of the
- [00:01:30.828]Council on Ethnic Participation
- [00:01:33.350]as well as NASPA and ACPA.
- [00:01:36.290]And I also am a part of the editorial
- [00:01:38.402]board for several different journals.
- [00:01:41.120]I think one of the major characteristics
- [00:01:43.095]that defines a successful student is
- [00:01:45.770]being willing to challenge yourself.
- [00:01:48.080]So coming into a new grad program,
- [00:01:50.476]it can be very exciting.
- [00:01:51.680]There are many opportunities that you
- [00:01:53.516]can take advantage of such as engaging in
- [00:01:56.060]research, presenting at conferences,
- [00:01:59.420]working alongside faculty and peers.
- [00:02:02.240]And I just encourage you to take
- [00:02:04.332]that moment to challenge yourself,
- [00:02:06.475]to step outside perhaps of
- [00:02:08.094]your comfort zone at times.
- [00:02:09.680]One of the best things about
- [00:02:10.995]Educational Administration
- [00:02:12.383]is that our department
- [00:02:13.550]is extremely community based, and we
- [00:02:15.875]care about folks, and we engage with each
- [00:02:18.230]other as a community.
- [00:02:19.699]So just know that even though it
- [00:02:21.602]might feel like you're
- [00:02:22.506]alone in this sometimes,
- [00:02:23.884]that you have an
- [00:02:24.741]entire community to lean on
- [00:02:26.244]and you should.
