- [00:00:03.740]Hi, my name is Beth Niehaus
- [00:00:05.317]and I'm a faculty member herein
- [00:00:06.998]Educational Administration.
- [00:00:08.790]I primarily focus on our
- [00:00:10.085]higher education
- [00:00:10.799]and student affairs areas,
- [00:00:11.960]both at the master's
- [00:00:12.879]and the doctoral level.
- [00:00:14.300]My research focuses primarily on the
- [00:00:16.252]ways that students interact with learning
- [00:00:17.900]environments in higher education institutions
- [00:00:20.520]and how faculty and other
- [00:00:21.500]educators on-campus structure
- [00:00:23.240]those learning environments
- [00:00:24.388]to best facilitate student
- [00:00:25.747]learning and development.
- [00:00:27.701]Specifically, I work in the
- [00:00:28.965]area of international education.
- [00:00:30.380]So I'm interested in short-term study
- [00:00:32.215]abroad programs and more recently virtual
- [00:00:34.490]international engagement
- [00:00:35.617]experiences for students.
- [00:00:37.220]And then also another line of my research
- [00:00:39.013]focuses on issues of free speech and
- [00:00:40.700]campus climate in higher education.
- [00:00:43.280]My teaching again is primarily
- [00:00:44.710]in the higher education area,
- [00:00:46.190]and I also teach research methods classes,
- [00:00:48.380]particularly advanced qualitative methods.
- [00:00:50.873]So being an online program,
- [00:00:52.280]student success looks a little bit
- [00:00:54.070]different than it might in face-to-face
- [00:00:55.850]programs.
- [00:00:57.110]Our most successful students are
- [00:00:58.397]the ones who are highly motivated,
- [00:01:00.050]who have a real reason to be here.
- [00:01:01.880]There's something that they
- [00:01:02.696]want to do with this degree.
- [00:01:04.760]And that self-motivation really
- [00:01:07.041]helps them engage in online courses,
- [00:01:09.830]where there might not be as many
- [00:01:11.226]check-in points as you might be used to in
- [00:01:13.226]face-to-face education.
- [00:01:15.008]When I think of our department,
- [00:01:16.610]the top two words that come to mind
- [00:01:18.543]are creative and collaborative.
- [00:01:20.840]We've been doing online education for
- [00:01:23.180]years well before I started
- [00:01:25.180]in the department.
- [00:01:26.720]And so we've really developed just awesome
- [00:01:29.300]strategies for engaging students in
- [00:01:31.300]really creative out-of-the-box ways
- [00:01:33.519]online.
- [00:01:34.880]One of my favorite things about teaching
- [00:01:36.277]online is that ability to be creative.
- [00:01:38.120]You know, when you teach face-to-face,
- [00:01:39.551]you have this box,
- [00:01:40.340]you have a three-hour class session
- [00:01:42.291]once a week in graduate school, usually.
- [00:01:44.360]But online,
- [00:01:45.501]you can go outside of that box.
- [00:01:46.950]You can engage students in video and
- [00:01:49.354]audio discussions.
- [00:01:50.598]You can do writing,
- [00:01:51.920]you can do projects,
- [00:01:53.240]you can do all these things that
- [00:01:54.606]just don't fit into that three
- [00:01:55.970]hour class session.
- [00:01:57.492]And I find that
- [00:01:58.160]every faculty member in our department
- [00:01:59.971]does things a little bit differently,
- [00:02:01.700]which is really great for students because
- [00:02:03.464]you can engage in so many different ways.
- [00:02:05.785]And then at the same time, we're
- [00:02:07.043]really collaborative in our department.
- [00:02:08.630]We all do things a little bit differently.
- [00:02:10.250]And so we're able to learn from each
- [00:02:11.408]other and improve our own practice,
- [00:02:13.040]both in teaching and in research.
