- [00:00:03.530]Hi, my name is Taeyeon Kim.
- [00:00:05.630]I am an Assistant Professor of
- [00:00:07.946]P-12 Education Administration.
- [00:00:11.480]This is technically my first year,
- [00:00:14.050]I joined UNL
- [00:00:15.980]summer 2020,
- [00:00:18.710]right after earning my Ph.D. degree
- [00:00:21.305]at Michigan State University.
- [00:00:24.320]Prior to that,
- [00:00:25.640]I spent seven and a half a years
- [00:00:28.000]in K to 12 education in South Korea.
- [00:00:31.220]I worked as an elementary school teacher
- [00:00:33.668]for five and a half years,
- [00:00:35.540]and then I also had
- [00:00:36.976]opportunities to lead and support
- [00:00:40.220]professional development programs for
- [00:00:42.809]teachers and leaders across the country.
- [00:00:45.740]Broadly speaking, my research examines,
- [00:00:48.920]how school leadership intersect
- [00:00:51.516]with accountability in
- [00:00:53.516]multiple contexts,
- [00:00:55.880]I use a sociocultural
- [00:00:58.032]understanding of policy.
- [00:01:00.500]Learning theories and comparative
- [00:01:02.876]perspectives to revisit
- [00:01:04.876]policy by centering the
- [00:01:07.750]voices of school leaders,
- [00:01:09.620]particularly those who
- [00:01:11.300]advocate for equity issues.
- [00:01:14.090]Instead of looking at
- [00:01:15.403]policy from the viewpoints,
- [00:01:17.540]of policymakers at the upper level,
- [00:01:20.300]I'm more interested in
- [00:01:22.263]individual leaders on the ground,
- [00:01:24.890]how they interpret policy and
- [00:01:27.518]develop leadership skills to
- [00:01:29.540]navigate challenges and multiple
- [00:01:32.179]layers of policies in school settings.
- [00:01:35.571]So in my research,
- [00:01:37.310]I really value school leaders emotions,
- [00:01:41.330]their lived experiences as
- [00:01:43.577]core components in knowledge creation.
- [00:01:48.606]In addition to my research,
- [00:01:50.810]I teach courses
- [00:01:53.090]focusing on P to12 Educational Leadership,
- [00:01:56.990]and I also teach
- [00:01:58.421]Qualitative Research Methods
- [00:02:00.566]for doctoral students across the department.
- [00:02:04.550]I really enjoy teaching.
- [00:02:06.561]A lot of the students in my department,
- [00:02:09.110]they are lifelong learners,
- [00:02:11.167]working professionals,
- [00:02:12.950]and they are the ones who make
- [00:02:14.966]changes in their schools
- [00:02:17.198]and communities.
- [00:02:19.070]It's an honor to be able to
- [00:02:21.163]support them to become
- [00:02:23.105]scholarly practitioners.
- [00:02:24.710]We talk a lot about
- [00:02:26.256]student success
- [00:02:27.861]and I think
- [00:02:29.720]being successful can be
- [00:02:31.423]understood in multiple ways.
- [00:02:34.070]Looking back, my
- [00:02:35.470]experience as a student,
- [00:02:37.530]what I most loved
- [00:02:39.630]about being students was
- [00:02:42.530]being able to imagine
- [00:02:45.371]different ways of thinking,
- [00:02:47.900]and living,
- [00:02:48.949]or being
- [00:02:50.173]beyond what I knew.
- [00:02:52.340]So I would try to advise
- [00:02:54.427]my students to be open,
- [00:02:58.460]to be surrounded by communities
- [00:03:01.404]that support you and love you.
- [00:03:04.690]And don't be afraid of being
- [00:03:07.031]challenged and being lost.
- [00:03:10.210]You will eventually achieve what
- [00:03:12.570]you want and you will be able to be
- [00:03:15.220]where you want to be.
