- [00:00:27.620]started. Thank you.
- [00:00:29.680]Thank you, Marcia.
- [00:00:30.590]And good afternoon, everybody.
- [00:00:31.680]It's so great to be here this afternoon
- [00:00:33.510]and thank you for attending
- [00:00:34.640]the N U Amplify 2021 conference.
- [00:00:38.300]I'm thrilled to see
- [00:00:39.133]that we have over 550 attendees registered this year
- [00:00:42.380]which is absolutely tremendous.
- [00:00:43.810]Considering the remote sessions that were were involved
- [00:00:47.270]in this this week.
- [00:00:48.900]Also want to give thanks
- [00:00:50.100]to Executive Vice President and Provost, Doctor Susan Fritz
- [00:00:53.870]for her leadership and comments this morning.
- [00:00:55.830]And of course, Mary Nemic for her always ongoing support
- [00:00:59.380]and leadership of this conference.
- [00:01:01.170]And Marcia to you and Mike and everybody else on the team.
- [00:01:04.070]Thanks for all, you've done to make this
- [00:01:05.461]a successful event here today.
- [00:01:08.075]As Marcia had mentioned, my name is Brett Blackman.
- [00:01:10.890]I'm the Vice President for IET
- [00:01:12.530]and CIO for the University Nebraska System.
- [00:01:15.210]And I've had the pro the privilege of being part
- [00:01:17.360]of the University Nebraska community for over 20 years
- [00:01:20.810]both as an employee
- [00:01:21.780]and as an alumni of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:24.830]And I'm very glad to say that in NUITS is a partner
- [00:01:27.460]at this great event that brings together so many faculty
- [00:01:29.810]and staff across the University of Nebraska System.
- [00:01:33.340]In ITS, we frequently say are strategic
- [00:01:35.920]in our strategic plan that we want our work to align
- [00:01:38.460]to what matters most to our faculty
- [00:01:40.420]to our staff and to our students.
- [00:01:42.880]And nothing matters more
- [00:01:44.480]than our teaching and learning the core
- [00:01:46.300]of why a student comes to the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:49.150]It's great to be part of a day celebrating innovation
- [00:01:51.387]and technology with teaching.
- [00:01:53.590]And if you would have asked us 15 months ago
- [00:01:56.270]what our spring was going to look like
- [00:01:58.860]none of us would have told you the current...
- [00:02:00.670]we would have told you the current initiatives
- [00:02:02.350]that we were working on in ITS
- [00:02:04.700]we would have mentioned things such
- [00:02:06.020]as our focus on digital accessibility
- [00:02:08.500]through our support of tools like Vidgrid
- [00:02:10.710]for accessible user-friendly video captioning.
- [00:02:13.610]We would have mentioned our commitment
- [00:02:14.850]to student affordability through us, through our support
- [00:02:17.610]of open educational resources and first day access
- [00:02:20.820]to programs, integrating digital course materials
- [00:02:23.230]into the learning management system, a program
- [00:02:25.590]that has now saved University
- [00:02:27.060]of Nebraska students $6 million
- [00:02:29.390]and counting.
- [00:02:31.690]We would have told you
- [00:02:32.523]about Duo our multi-factor authentication system now used
- [00:02:35.610]by all University Nebraska students, faculty, and staff.
- [00:02:39.147]A tool that greatly helps user accounts stay secure
- [00:02:42.210]and helps lower our risk.
- [00:02:44.550]But instead as we all know
- [00:02:46.280]things change dramatically during a due
- [00:02:48.900]to COVID-19 pandemic and, and NUITS has had been
- [00:02:52.215]has had an all hands on deck approach.
- [00:02:55.290]As many of you have as well, by lead,
- [00:02:57.730]what has proven to be an amount of digital transformation
- [00:03:01.350]at the University of Nebraska this past year.
- [00:03:04.033]Our role in service to the University of Nebraska,
- [00:03:06.500]particularly through this past year has been
- [00:03:08.130]an absolute privilege for us.
- [00:03:10.450]Each team in our division
- [00:03:12.260]from our help desk to our instructional technologists
- [00:03:14.460]to our security team and all other teams
- [00:03:16.830]within our division have needed to pivot along with the rest
- [00:03:20.060]of the University of Nebraska in order to serve in new ways.
- [00:03:24.510]Things such as the increase
- [00:03:25.700]in the number of people needing Soft Phones
- [00:03:28.030]for remote work set up up over 271%.
- [00:03:32.110]The number of phishing attempts that we've had to stay
- [00:03:35.150]on top of related to COVID-19
- [00:03:36.940]and some security during the pandemic has been
- [00:03:39.810]over a hundred thousand and just a 10 day period.
- [00:03:42.870]And the almost 2000% increase in Zoom usage
- [00:03:46.840]across the University Nebraska.
- [00:03:48.840]No surprise to us now,
- [00:03:49.930]it's become a daily norm for us
- [00:03:51.500]but that's quite a shift with the amount
- [00:03:53.150]of Zoom that we all experience every day in our lives now.
- [00:03:57.070]And finally close to the 380 million page views
- [00:04:00.300]in Canvas that were part of the year 2020.
- [00:04:05.300]As technologists we find this time to be
- [00:04:06.930]of incredible momentum and progress
- [00:04:09.070]but we also realize that change can be very difficult.
- [00:04:12.860]We will continue to partner closely
- [00:04:14.254]with our faculty, our staff, and our students
- [00:04:17.330]as we consider next steps with you
- [00:04:19.420]across the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:21.950]Whether this be piloting,
- [00:04:23.270]piloting a new tool to help faculty
- [00:04:25.170]to continue to experiment
- [00:04:26.550]with digital elements of their courses
- [00:04:28.650]or support web development across the campuses.
- [00:04:30.880]We want to be the great partners
- [00:04:32.320]in determining what technology comes next
- [00:04:34.660]and how technology can ultimately
- [00:04:36.500]be strategic differentiator for the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:39.972]Very exciting things ahead.
- [00:04:41.930]We are thrilled to be aligned, to align our work
- [00:04:45.108]and to serve President Carter's five-year plan.
- [00:04:48.440]As we leverage technology
- [00:04:49.810]in ways to help enable those priorities to be met.
- [00:04:53.290]We're certainly impressed
- [00:04:55.130]with faculty's desire to really dig
- [00:04:56.660]in and humanize the digital learning environment
- [00:04:59.300]and to increase connection and engagement.
- [00:05:03.360]We are in the middle of and your completion
- [00:05:05.382]of a complete refresh of the University Nebraska network
- [00:05:08.950]for the first time, since the internet came
- [00:05:11.040]to our campuses in 1990, which of course is decades
- [00:05:15.810]and decades ago and the term of IT.
- [00:05:18.500]For the first time ever
- [00:05:19.630]at the university of Nebraska, we have a modern scalable
- [00:05:22.550]and secure network infrastructure across every one
- [00:05:24.730]of our campuses, including 10,000 wireless access points
- [00:05:29.390]up into our ceilings, providing great coverage
- [00:05:31.300]across our campuses and every building
- [00:05:33.690]having upgraded connectivity
- [00:05:35.100]and security added each one of them.
- [00:05:38.410]And we're doubling down
- [00:05:39.299]on open educational resources
- [00:05:41.400]and reduce costs digital course materials
- [00:05:43.800]by partnering with campus registrars and bookstores
- [00:05:46.056]to implement course marking which will allow students
- [00:05:49.070]and their parents to view the courses
- [00:05:51.690]that are using these reduced costs course materials
- [00:05:54.800]at the time they register for courses,
- [00:05:57.080]helping them make more well-informed decisions.
- [00:06:00.870]All of these projects are gaining energy and momentum
- [00:06:03.120]because of our close partnerships and collaborations
- [00:06:05.310]with all of you and so many others across
- [00:06:07.760]the University of Nebraska.
- [00:06:09.730]On behalf of the University
- [00:06:10.940]of Nebraska Information Technology Services division,
- [00:06:13.760]thank you for the opportunity to serve
- [00:06:15.650]and create these possibilities
- [00:06:16.890]through the use of technology across our campuses.
- [00:06:20.260]I hope you've enjoyed this great event today.
