- [00:10:26.000]Well, Good evening everyone.
- [00:10:29.000]I want to test my microphone testing our live captioning this evening I my camera as well make sure that you can hear me, I see, because to give a nod here from my co hosts, everything is working in form.
- [00:10:44.000]Um, we have a few more people trickling in here from the waiting room so I'm just going to give it a minute, till we get started so that we don't miss anyone, but thanks for being here you're in the right place and we will get started in just a minute.
- [00:12:49.000]Good evening everyone, I think we're ready to get started here. Greetings from a sunny but sweltering Nebraska I think it is 95 degrees today. And I would say the humidity is also very high, so grateful to be indoors this evening and spending the evening
- [00:13:07.000]with you all talking about student life at Nebraska.
- [00:13:12.000]We are going to dive right in here with introductions. I'll start us off my name is Rachel and heart and I'm an orientation coordinator in the Office of New Student Enrollment so we run orientation.
- [00:13:23.000]I primarily plan our extended orientation power of weekend and big red welcome, and the summer I am coordinating our webinar series so I'm happy to be engaging with you all in this capacity this summer.
- [00:13:35.000]And I will toss it over to Joe to introduce himself.
- [00:13:44.000]Joe I don't think we can hear you. Can you all hear Joe.
- [00:13:49.000]Alright, let's try this again.
- [00:14:12.000]Okay, Joe will toss it over to Veronica here and give you a minute to troubleshoot.
- [00:14:17.000]Okay, so can you hear me.
- [00:14:20.000]Awesome.
- [00:14:22.000]Then I'll introduce Joe.
- [00:14:24.000]So Joe and I both represent the student leadership involvement and community engagement office, Joseph program coordinator and I am the director and we're excited to be here tonight.
- [00:14:44.000]All right, I'll take that as it's my turn.
- [00:14:47.000]So my name is Scott Wagner on the assistant director with member engagement with Campus Recreation.
- [00:14:52.000]With that, really, truly means is I'm the individual that kind of gets people in our building, but also engages our membership whether that's our faculty and staff and more importantly our students and kind of what we offer for Campus Recreation and how
- [00:15:06.000]we can benefit them while they're here at ul, so
- [00:15:12.000]that's it thank you both. Joe soundcheck How are we doing over there.
- [00:15:16.000]Can you hear me now. Yes. Hello.
- [00:15:22.000]Thank you I'm gonna work now.
- [00:15:25.000]Do you have anything that you want to add to your intro. Yeah, sure. Um, so my role specifically Veronica did a good job introducing me but I work specifically with new student organizations so if they areas in a club on campus currently that you combined.
- [00:15:39.000]I'm the one that will help you to start a new one, and I'll kind of leave it at that.
- [00:15:45.000]Fantastic. Thank you all. This is a great group of people to now, and a great panel of experts to have with us this evening we're lucky to have them to talk about all things student life at Nebraska outlined from student leadership and involvement and
- [00:16:00.000]community engagement as well as Campus Recreation opportunities and fitness centers.
- [00:16:05.000]So, so each of our hosts will give a bit of an introduction and a more a broader overview of what their offices do and then we really want to preserve.
- [00:16:13.000]Time for a live question and answer so as we move through the evening, let us know what questions you have.
- [00:16:18.000]We're using a zoom we're using the webinar feature in zoom this evening. And so, you will notice that you can't access your microphone and your cameras and that's okay.
- [00:16:29.000]We will funnel all of your questions through our q amp a box so along your screen, along the bottom panel of your screen. You should see a box that says q amp a, you just click that you can type your questions and they'll come straight to us and we'll
- [00:16:41.000]be able to address those at the end. I'm also recording tonight's session so tomorrow I will be sending out a copy of the recording if you want to refer to any of this information in the future as well as a copy of the PowerPoint slide deck so if there
- [00:16:54.000]are links are details in there, you'll have access to that too.
- [00:16:59.000]All right, I'm going to pass it back to Veronica and Joe to talk about student involvement.
- [00:17:06.000]Great. Thanks, Rachel. Um, so a couple of things that we want to highlight. We have recently gone through a name change. So if you hear Joe and I concentrating on how to tell you like about our department that's that's probably why not because we're completely
- [00:17:29.000]In January, and so we are now. Student Leadership involvement and community engagement and we are really excited about that.
- [00:17:38.000]The mission of our office or the focus of our office is to look at those three pieces so we'll do our best tonight, as we as we talk through the importance of getting involved to try to give examples from those those areas but from the area of leadership,
- [00:17:57.000]we want students to know that they're all leaders.
- [00:18:00.000]Some people lead like positionally right there there are president of an organization.
- [00:18:06.000]They're the captain of the sport club team or an intramural team.
- [00:18:12.000]You know those kinds of things but all students show leadership and so one of our areas is to focus on how do we develop that in students, all of our students come to us with different skills and abilities and we want to help them grow throughout their
- [00:18:27.000]time at Nebraska involvement is, is where Joe was talking about that he works with our new recognized student organizations or we call them ourselves, and so you'll hear us talk a lot about getting involved.
- [00:18:43.000]I'm emphasizing that we want you to or your students to find two things at least to get involved in and so if you can tie that to to your major great, but also something that you're fun.
- [00:18:56.000]That's fun for you or you're passionate about. And so we'll talk about involvement in try to give you again as many suggestions or options as possible, and then community engagement and so for us community engagement is we think it's important for our
- [00:19:11.000]students to remember that we are all part of communities.
- [00:19:15.000]Soon they will be part of the Husker community in the University of Nebraska Lincoln, but we're also part of Lincoln, the Lincoln community the Lancaster County community the state of Nebraska and quite honestly the country in the world.
- [00:19:28.000]And so we strive to connect our students with communities, beyond the university and so think of service opportunities, mentoring opportunities and connecting our students with area nonprofits to be most mutually beneficial for both our students, as well
- [00:19:49.000]as those, those nonprofits.
- [00:19:53.000]So, why, why do we get involved. We know that our students are better off quite honestly, when they engage outside of the classroom. And so, that engagement comes in, in various shapes and sizes, so it begins with them, attending events, participating,
- [00:20:12.000]you will you will hear if you haven't already attended new student enrollment, you will hear a lot about Big Red welcome.
- [00:20:19.000]That's how we kick off every academic year. And so the challenge to you and to your students is to participate in, in events. We need you to come to campus we need you to come out of your rooms and participate and sometimes taking risks, go to something
- [00:20:34.000]that you're not, you're not sure about attend an event at at the LEAD Center for the Performing Arts.
- [00:20:41.000]Go to a play protection attend a Husker athletic event so there's, there's lots of ways that that you can get involved by attending, but we want you to join things and Joe will talk about kind of signing up for things, and ultimately we want you to hold
- [00:20:58.000]leadership positions positional leadership positions.
- [00:21:01.000]Throughout throughout your time. We know and all of our research demonstrates that students that are more actively involved and engaged do better academically.
- [00:21:12.000]They're, they're kind of satisfaction their happiness, their viewpoint of their collegiate experience is better when they have connections beyond their classroom and so we use the terminology, showing up signing up, and ultimately leveling up.
- [00:21:31.000]Um, so showing up is what I just described participating and attending events, signing up is, you know, you kind of sign on the dotted line and say no I want to have a longer term commitment with this.
- [00:21:43.000]We you can even look at that from a service perspective of, if you want to play a mentoring role in a local nonprofit that you meet with a young person in the LinkedIn community every week.
- [00:21:55.000]That's, that's signing up you've made a commitment to that, or joining various clubs or organizations and so that's that's the goal you check them out and then sign up.
- [00:22:08.000]You can switch sides.
- [00:22:12.000]All right. So, thanks Veronica, that kind of is a perfect lead, lead way into this next slide that talks a little bit more about the specifics of showing up, and what we always see is probably the biggest barrier to people getting involved is just that
- [00:22:25.000]fear of oh I don't have anybody to go with. And we always encourage, if you're living in a residence hall, grab your roommate, grab your IRA.
- [00:22:35.000]Go find somebody that you met in your classes that week and just go to an activity there's no commitment really with the showing up part of things it's more just expose yourself to new things by new experiences, meet new people and you can do that in
- [00:22:50.000]a couple different ways we listed like the homecoming parade, or there's lots of our SOS net stands for recognized student organizations, they have cultural celebrations.
- [00:22:59.000]We also host something during the first week of classes called club fair where all the different our episodes are going to be having boosts where they'll share information about their group.
- [00:23:08.000]And you can learn if that's the fit for you. There's lots of things besides that that could be something you could just show up to, and the next thing is now that I know okay to get involved in to really gain experience and things I haven't done, How
- [00:23:23.000]do I find these events, there's lots of different ways to do it but we really focus on involve you that's our platform that even now, even if you don't have your login credentials yet for my read or any of those things you can still get on to but you
- [00:23:37.000]can look through all the different events that all the different clubs on campus are already posted, and that's a really great way to already find out what groups are active what groups are maybe not as active and what activities are they doing that trigger
- [00:23:50.000]my interests, what do I want to get involved.
- [00:23:52.000]So that's one of our primary ways because every organization if they're hosting an event has to put their events in there. So, always check those out, along with social media, we have as our slice team Twitter, Instagram and Facebook so we always share
- [00:24:05.000]and retweet and post things that we host as an office but also that other clubs will host, but kind of more on the benefits of the actual showing up. We have found that in those key areas listed communication, leadership, teamwork.
- [00:24:20.000]In a personal and adaptability, you find that we see improvements in all of those areas because of people showing up to campus activities once again there's no commitment there's no, I'm a member of a group or a club.
- [00:24:35.000]You're just simply showing up so you can already see that there are benefits of just that, and so that goes into our next slide if Rachel you want to switch it for us now into more of the, the signing up aspects and now this is two more of our, how do
- [00:24:50.000]I become a member How do I join a group or club, and there's not just groups and clubs, but many things on campus that are related to your academic major like college advisory boards if you want to be a part of that you can be a tutor.
- [00:25:03.000]If you want to be an RA on campus in the future, and Scott will talk a little bit more about sports clubs I won't steal his thunder, but another opportunity to really get into, and join in doing so, you have lots of different options there's over 500
- [00:25:20.000]different clubs and groups on campus. And with that, you can find tons of different focus areas once again whether it's your academic major or just a hobby, you know, encourage you to do to.
- [00:25:32.000]So look in those different categories, political, social justice. Spiritual religious recreational and there's more than just that but those are some examples.
- [00:25:42.000]And then another key area that we like to always mention is being involved in signing up, you then become friends with those people that you're around because you're seeing them, most likely once a week, maybe once every other week, or even more than
- [00:25:56.000]that and those people then become your family away from your family. And that's something that we all need as human beings is to feel like we're cared about we belong and so those clubs and groups and different organizations you belong to really fit that
- [00:26:09.000]need, and it gives you a sense of purpose.
- [00:26:13.000]But lastly kind of the other aspect of it is that the students have always talked about signing up being a part of a group, they find that, you know, being social finding community, developing new skills and engaging a new experiences you can see there's
- [00:26:28.000]that growth and the signing up to the, to, sorry excuse me the showing up to the signing up and how just that difference between showing up to things and becoming a member of things does increase the being social finding community developing.
- [00:26:42.000]So, that's kind of our judge point in our perspective from that we're more than happy to help you to get involved.
- [00:26:49.000]Once you're on campus so if you're not able to do a whole bunch of summer, come and find us in the Nebraska union both east or City Campus we're around all five days of the business work week eight to five, and we'd love to find a way to plug you into
- [00:27:03.000]something, but that is kind of our area of campus and I'll turn it back over to Rachel.
- [00:27:11.000]Great fantastic so I will actually pass it to Scott here, talk a bit about Campus Recreation,
- [00:27:19.000]or all right thank you, Rachel, I think there was first of all a lot of great information from Veronica and Joe, and a lot of it will you'll probably hear a lot of the same phrases and buzzwords that, that we are in the, in the Campus Rec world.
- [00:27:32.000]I would like to see if there was some if anyone would be willing to step outside and and put some, some comments in the question and answer piece kind of what made you decide to show up to this session tonight.
- [00:27:46.000]And what are you hoping that your student will gain from from participating in either with student leadership or with Campus Recreation or just being involved in campus so throw some of those out there as far in a q amp a about what it is that you're
- [00:28:04.000]hoping that your students will gain by participating on campus as we as we talk about this.
- [00:28:10.000]All right, Rachel, go ahead.
- [00:28:15.000]Alright, so I'm going to probably give you a few things here some of the things that are really important to Campus Recreation and, and I'm going to speak for probably most of our student affairs colleagues, a urinal and probably around the world but
- [00:28:28.000]we really want to make a place where your students feel like there's a sense of belonging.
- [00:28:35.000]Our biggest thing is we want them to find a community within the community. There is tons of information out there so much data to sift through that tell us that your students when they get involved one way or the other, whether it's with what Veronica
- [00:28:51.000]and Joe are talking about or what I'm talking about, or anything in between that they are more than likely going to love being on campus, they're going to feel like they're part of something bigger, smaller community within the larger human community
- [00:29:06.000]and Joe talked about family as well. Those are things that we want our students to feel that they have a sense of belonging here for a lot of different reasons, but one of them is retention we want those students to stay.
- [00:29:18.000]We want them to complete their degrees and we want them to move on to something bigger and better when they leave the, the address of Yunel, for sure.
- [00:29:27.000]So, again more studies show that the students that are involved from the beginning, are the ones that are going to have higher grade point averages and things like that but they're also the ones that that don't get homesick and they're the ones that have
- [00:29:39.000]a better retention rate and want to come back year in you're out until they finally get that degree obvious the the low hanging fruit with us is the health and well being aspect, it's it's it's vital time for students to find out who they are as people
- [00:29:56.000]but also what kind of the habits are they going to have when they leave campus. So we really push the health and well being and we don't want to scare people away that it's only the physical health piece that that we are about.
- [00:30:09.000]You don't have to be a super athlete to be part of intervals or sport clubs, and you don't have to be, you know, someone that works out five days a week to use our facilities, that's for sure.
- [00:30:20.000]So we have a little bit of something for everybody.
- [00:30:23.000]We, and we were always looking to expand that for sure but we want people to come in use our facilities in what way they they see best, but we also have a lot of things that are talking about massage and we talked about eating right and eating well on
- [00:30:39.000]a, on a budget which they all will have that situation Arise for them. So, not only the health but the well being, was physical and mental are very important to us.
- [00:30:48.000]And then the last piece that that's kind of kind of what we're hanging our hat on, is we employ a large amount of students, staff or the Campus Recreation and all our programs and services.
- [00:30:59.000]And we really close for them to be better citizens when they leave, leave us we want them to be fully prepared that they can get the job that they want with their degree in hand, and be ready for the real world when that takes place so we do a lot of
- [00:31:13.000]things developmentally wise with our with students in order to make sure that they are fully prepared, no matter if they're going to be a lawyer. If they're going to be, you know, a veterinarian anything whatsoever.
- [00:31:26.000]Even if it doesn't have recreation behind it. We hope that we can get some transferable skills to them that they can take with them.
- [00:31:34.000]So I see that we have some people in here, confidence, that's a good one. And you gain confidence by trying new things and doing some of that stuff.
- [00:31:44.000]My son went to UNL decided just to get re educated good.
- [00:31:50.000]So in our morals and cross country so obviously there's the social dynamic Joe talked about meeting friends and and people that you're probably going to, you know, that'll stand up in your wedding one day and those those happen in our programs, academics
- [00:32:05.000]and social second family so awesome. These are all really good things and I think you're in the right spot.
- [00:32:13.000]archery clubs opportunity to establish friendships, so I think we touched on that. So let's talk about the community piece that we just touched on briefly in a number of your in this session because of that are our data that we've collected over the years
- [00:32:30.000]years shows that around 84% of Yunel students say they like using our facility and services. Again this is self reported data but you can see our campus is very active.
- [00:32:41.000]We also have lots of activity and other avenues as well and I'm sure that that our student leadership and all our involvement stuff, definitely has a high number around that 84% as well.
- [00:32:54.000]So, we also when we talk about nurses, that is our national intramural Recreational Sports Association, and they they average, they looked at over 6700 students and the top five responses and why they participate in recreational services.
- [00:33:08.000]And these are some of the things that you've already talked about in in the in the chat. So a sense of belonging, meeting new people, obviously, relieving stress being physically fit and overall just having having a little bit of fun.
- [00:33:24.000]All right, Rachel. So let's see. So we talked about retention, just again some nerdy data from my point of view for that I think is very interesting, But I'll give you that.
- [00:33:36.000]So retention and academic success these again are numbers that are specific to Campus Recreation but they'll hold true for any student organization, any type of student affairs program that are out there.
- [00:33:50.000]You just have to be involved and that's if you take anything away from what we have to say.
- [00:33:56.000]The involvement is that is the key part. So, what it what the data is showing from the intramural and recreational side of things that those that use our facilities at least 16 times a month or you are getting a GPA of 3.1 or.
- [00:34:10.000]or higher. So you can see there's that balance between academics and, you know, giving the brain arrest and doing some other things and and training the brain muscle, much like you train in general, those that use the facilities at least seven times a
- [00:34:24.000]month so not, you know, you know, a couple less than two times a week out get still get a 3.06 so you can see that those are very high. When we come to our two GPA and that type of situation.
- [00:34:38.000]And then some other number 74% of students at you and l are saying that they came to campus because of the facilities or they have an influence on them and 67% appreciate the programs and services that we provide within Campus Recreation as well.
- [00:35:02.000]again some more. pretty interesting data to me.
- [00:35:07.000]This is talking about the health and well being piece and the importance of why recreational sports are important. So, 83% of students, talked about that they come before the college they had a knowledge of 83% of them said that it was important for them
- [00:35:26.000]to to go use our facilities. During college 75% said that they report that some level that they used our programs and services. But the biggest thing for me is the 90% of students report that Campus Recreation activities and different programs and services
- [00:35:42.000]had a direct benefit on them after they left our programs, after they left school. So things like a I learned a new sport, I learned a new hobby. I learned how to take care of myself.
- [00:35:55.000]You know I learned how to manage stress whatever those cases may be so 90% is a pretty good thing that we like to hang our hat on when it comes to what people are learning and then leaving with when they leave our facilities.
- [00:36:10.000]And then so we talked a little bit about postgraduate employment success. Campus Recreation at any one time during the an academic year does higher around 600 to 650 students.
- [00:36:24.000]So, definitely on campus employment is is very good convenient way for students to learn to earn extra income. We are open 545 in the morning till midnight so lots of opportunity for those students to get, get some hours in and make a little bit of paycheck
- [00:36:43.000]which I'm sure you're all are happy to hear that they won't be bugging you for gas money.
- [00:36:48.000]So, and we are cognizant that they are academically involved and we work around their schedules as best we can. We have lots of opportunities within the recreation facilities, whether that's being a lifeguard and intramural official or just someone that
- [00:37:03.000]is a welcoming face when you walk in the building and helps people find their way.
- [00:37:08.000]We also work very hard with the development piece of them, and we do something called Husker grow which stands for guided reflection on work. And what we do is we ask them questions about how their work relates to their schoolwork and their schoolwork
- [00:37:23.000]relates back to their work at Campus Rec. And what are some things that they're not getting that they think are important when they leave the university, and what are some things that they can kind of we connect the dots for them to tell them, oh yeah
- [00:37:37.000]I didn't realize that I was learning this as I was working here at Campus Rec.
- [00:37:41.000]Most of them you know if you ever been in a real official you learn what conflict resolution is very quickly, and we make sure that they understand that.
- [00:37:49.000]We also look at some of the learning outcomes that are listed here on the screen. And these are these are things that our students at strictly work for Campus Recreation are telling you that they're learning from their experience working with us.
- [00:38:01.000]So, time management spirit skills respect that academic performance is important. The belonging piece multitasking developing friendships, just working in a team setting communication, and some of those things you can see, we score very high on that,
- [00:38:17.000]but those are just some of the things that we like to make sure that our students are well aware of and that they can put those on their resumes when they leave our, our facilities and when they get that degree from you and now
- [00:38:36.000]is Campus Rec so hiring for the fall semester.
- [00:38:40.000]Yes we are. We, we will see a lot more things come up in here probably in the end of mid July, beginning of August as people kind of get an understanding of, of how many people are coming back.
- [00:38:54.000]We've had a lot of changes with our covert stuff so now we're kind of functioning on it on a different trajectory, so to speak. So we're going to need more staff and we were before.
- [00:39:06.000]So definitely keep that involved we are keep an eye on that we do post all our positions on handshake, which is on the UL handshake site, and I would definitely encourage your students to look there, and they'll see, we have some positions open now and
- [00:39:23.000]we'll have more open as we move forward so I I'm sure that Joe, Joe and Veronica you guys are always hiring as well.
- [00:39:36.000]Can I just come on on both things that weren't asked questions but people have said I'm, I'm intrigued in and excited to see that some of you have students coming from out of state, and to let you know that some of what you're sort of expressing are exactly
- [00:39:52.000]what we want them to do we.
- [00:39:55.000]I appreciate the comment of, you know, kind of broadening my horizons and find other things to do. I think the the collegiate experience is right for that for all of us.
- [00:40:07.000]Maybe that's why I've worked in higher ed for so long I get to kind of work with a new group every year.
- [00:40:15.000]But there's, but there's so many things I mean, we're selfishly sort of recruiting for our departments, but there's so many opportunities to engage and it's and it's a bit of a trial and error.
- [00:40:27.000]and so it's.
- [00:40:30.000]Some people kind of find their, we have a, we have a colleague that talks about finding their crew quickly but others, you know it's you just kind of jumped around a little bit and that's sort of the benefit you, you didn't sign up for a three credit
- [00:40:44.000]class that lasts for 16 weeks, you know, you go to club meetings and you find out if oh this is exactly what I thought it was going to be. I love to tell the story of a student I talked to that I said, you know, was there a club that you didn't participate
- [00:40:58.000]in and he said yeah I played baseball in high school and I wanted to try out for the baseball club and I went to try outs and they were pitching like way too fast for me and I learned that that was not going to be it and it was really funny and, you know,
- [00:41:13.000]he's like yeah but I found these other things to do so.
- [00:41:16.000]Definitely. Um, maybe one of the questions about are the schedules. I'm flexible absolutely every group meets at different times, sometimes they change their meeting time from fall semester to spring semester.
- [00:41:31.000]Yeah, I would say afternoon and evening, sometimes on the weekends we have, we have some groups that you know Sunday evening works best for them Sunday afternoons.
- [00:41:41.000]I know a group that they meet on Saturday mornings which I've always thought that was really bizarre but that works for them and, and they've been doing that for a really long time.
- [00:41:54.000]And so, yeah. So, in there's groups that even if you couldn't attend the meeting.
- [00:42:00.000]I'm, you know, let's say you have an internship or you have a night class one semester, it doesn't mean you can't be part of that group. So, another thing to add on to that that I didn't mention during my slides is the best part about being able to try
- [00:42:14.000]out different groups is it's not a commitment for the four years of college that you're in, so if you come to let's say chess club because you really like chest and you realize.
- [00:42:24.000]Yeah, this is not for me that doesn't lock you into have to go to every meeting every activity from that point on in your college experience you can always try something and say, Nope, not for me, and then don't continue on doing it.
- [00:42:35.000]After that, and keep trying stuff.
- [00:42:40.000]Alright, this is a great segue into our live q amp a so I see that we have a handful of questions here we'll work through these, but this is your chance to get your questions answered so send those through the q amp a section will continue to answer those
- [00:42:53.000]as we go along.
- [00:42:54.000]A few questions about intramural sport clubs have a specific question about whether there is intramural or club cross country or running teams.
- [00:43:05.000]Okay, as far as running I know we at the international level they do put on different events like a five K.
- [00:43:14.000]They that was something that they always do. Usually it's like a homecoming Fun Run type situation, if you're wanting to this is a perfect example of finding your, your crew, there is a running club.
- [00:43:28.000]They do not do anything other than run. So, you know, then that is we all show up at the same time two or three times a week and they run as a group, around campus and whatnot is, it's not like they go to any competitions.
- [00:43:42.000]So, within sport clubs there, there are those that are just honing a skill, and there are those that are just social in nature and there are some that travel all over the place so it's kind of what you want to put into it.
- [00:43:52.000]So the running side homecoming type five K's. There is an intramural track me. And then the running club is just a club of avid runners that like to go out and run together.
- [00:44:05.000]And I am not one of those people.
- [00:44:10.000]It takes a special, special characteristic but there's something for everyone, for sure.
- [00:44:17.000]There was a question about finding a list of all the organizations and Veronica pop that into the chat. So, the website is the best place to find that Scott is there also a website that lists the active clubs that are available that might be valuable
- [00:44:32.000]to pop into cuz I see a couple more questions, Rachel they can search that on involve you. Oh, fantastic, you go, if you go to the link, and then you look in the left hand column, you can search by keywords, but you can also search by, I think type is
- [00:44:48.000]the terminology we use but then sport clubs, is one of those, you can also Fraternity and Sorority Life is also in our same system. So you could also, if any, I know this isn't about Fraternity and Sorority Life but if you're interested in that.
- [00:45:03.000]You can also search by that category and you'll be able to see all of our fraternities and sororities on campus as well.
- [00:45:14.000]And I'll throw all throw on top of that, if you if you find a club that you like and I saw this question earlier so I'll kind of talk about that. If you find a club that you like and you want to know more information they're usually contact information
- [00:45:28.000]to their administration. Their presidents and so on and so forth and they're pretty good about getting back to you as far as when they're going to have meetings where they're going and practice, things like that to other events, the club fair which will
- [00:45:41.000]will be right out the gate when we get back in August, will have pretty much all the club all the registered student organizations and I don't want to speak out of turn.
- [00:45:50.000]But that's a good place to come find, find your group, and then also Husker mania is the Friday night of moving week, and we will have all our clubs present at that event so there's an opportunity to meet them directly.
- [00:46:04.000]And then there was a question about archery.
- [00:46:07.000]There, there is currently not an active archery club, but that doesn't mean that there couldn't be. And that's kind of an interesting piece if you come to the Rec Center, and you can speak with one of my colleagues and they will kind of walk you through
- [00:46:20.000]the process of what it takes to start a club, if you if you find enough people that want to do it.
- [00:46:26.000]Then you can go from there which is pretty cool because then you have kind of almost a lasting legacy as you leave you and all that you started club x y z which is pretty cool.
- [00:46:36.000]And there is some interest in that area I know some student approached me sometime throughout this last year about that as well. So, once again, they can do it if they want, and there are students available I don't know who they are but they're out there.
- [00:46:53.000]Alright, Our next question is there a swimming pool on campus.
- [00:46:59.000]Yes, there is. camp at the City Campus Rec Center we have a five lane 25 meter lap pool. Our other pool is no longer here so we have that situation going on so if you're looking for just to come in and swim, that's an option they also do programming in
- [00:47:19.000]there, whether it's, believe it or not we teach you how to, how to kayak and how to use a canoe and there was some of our instructional classes, we have swimming lessons that range from the little bitty ones to I've never swam before now and I want to
- [00:47:33.000]do a triathlon so it's an interesting opportunity within our pool but if you're just there to swim as a means of exercise we have that option for you on City campus but not on East Campus.
- [00:47:59.010]Husker vision is who manages like the scoreboards and everything at athletic events, and the content that goes up on on Husker vision and all those boards so they hire a number of students.
- [00:47:50.509]I have a question here about Husker vision Veronica might direct that to you or Scott, I'm not sure either of you can speak to that.
- [00:48:18.000]I would suggest two things. One, you can go to handshake, which is our job platform through Career Services So Scott was referencing you know positions available on campus direct we have positions open.
- [00:48:32.000]That's where that's where students can go, I suspect athletics post their job there.
- [00:48:38.000]If not, it would be reaching out to, I would probably recommend the marketing department and athletics but students can you know they can wait to do that when they get on campus.
- [00:48:51.000]So that's what I would suggest related to that, um, football tickets, um, for students tickets are sold by section, so students don't have assigned seats, they have assigned sections that they sit in, I know.
- [00:49:11.000]Tickets are available, or at least they were two days ago when I was at New Student Enrollment because athletics was at a table with student ticket packages for basketball, football and volleyball.
- [00:49:28.000]I would have to do some research to find where how you purchase those I suspect you can purchase them online and.
- [00:49:38.000]So Rachel we might have to look for that because I don't know what that is off the top of my head.
- [00:49:43.000]I can include that information in my follow up email especially if you're not attending in person orientation we recognize that there's a handful of students participating through our online platform.
- [00:49:54.000]So I can send that that the those instructions in my follow up email with the webinar, video and link.
- [00:50:03.000]Alright, it looks like Joe just answered our last question about joining a club I'm not sure if you wanted to add anything Scott touched on that. And if you have anything you want to add.
- [00:50:14.000]Yeah, I mean there's not just one way to do it some clubs. They have their officers, they should have their officers listed on the side of their involved the portal so you can reach out directly let's say like Dance Marathon we're a big organization you
- [00:50:30.000]could reach out specifically to our Vice President, or president.
- [00:50:34.000]You could also just click the Join Now button which automatically will send a notification to the officers, letting them know that you're interested, some clubs or groups they may have a more intricate like an interview process or some type of application
- [00:50:53.000]that they'll follow up with but for the most part, clubs, just really want people to join their craving more members so simply clicking Join Now we're reaching out over email is really all you have to do.
- [00:51:09.000]All right. Fantastic, thank you for the great questions. I, we have moved through our question queue. So, I will have a last call here if you have any burning questions that you'd like answered before we before we close up this evening.
- [00:51:23.000]And in the meantime I will invite Joe and Veronica first and then Scott to give a plug on where to find them online.
- [00:51:34.000]Yeah, we like everyone else you know we have a website actually Our website is just gone through a revision and the last few months due to the, to the office change and.
- [00:51:43.000]And so I would, I would say overall, the University works really hard to make sure information is available to students and we try to make it as simple as possible.
- [00:51:55.000]Um, and you will notice in that we talk about involve you or we talk about handshake so even when you're on our website. Sometimes it takes you to other platforms and that's for ease for students so for us involve you is where sport clubs, recognize student
- [00:52:13.000]organizations and fraternities and sororities are all using that same that same platform. So we try to make that as easy as possible I will, I will say, once you have registered for classes, and you're, you're enrolled, you should have access into that
- [00:52:33.000]platform and so you'll be able to log into the platform with the same credentials, you, you gain to get on to my read. And so once, once you have that, then you can go in login, which kind of opens up more information that we do to just kind of some,
- [00:52:53.000]some information is public, but some of it is only available to the UFO community so if you haven't yet registered yet you don't quite have access. Just wait a little bit until you've done that, it takes a couple of days for our systems to cycle through
- [00:53:10.000]and and so we encourage you to explore those platforms and explore our websites. We also encourage you to follow us on social media, I mean you'll hear that over and over again.
- [00:53:22.000]but we love having new followers we really try to share a lot of information on those social media platforms, both at the university level, the departmental level, and the student organization level, and so you can kind of pick and choose, but get a flavor
- [00:53:40.000]of what's happening on campus or what's going to happen. As we get through the summer months and get ready for school to start in August.
- [00:53:53.000]All right. So, really, there's tons of ways to get involved and to get connected with Campus Recreation. Our website is a ton of great information, almost too much information to sift through at times for sure so I always recommend that we look at our
- [00:54:11.000]social media platforms as a means to to get what's happening now and whether our deadlines are for those situations, by Facebook, Instagram, all that good stuff.
- [00:54:22.000]You can find us at ul campus wreck.
- [00:54:26.000]Otherwise, I really encourage you to send your students to the Campus Rec Center or the Rec and Wellness Center on East Campus, and just simply ask the front desk staff, they are students that were in their shoes a few years ago so they're, they're pretty
- [00:54:43.000]understanding is that, that when when students come in with that deer in the headlight look they know that okay I need to probably help them as much as I can, our Member Services staff is is pretty much the lifeblood of the department and they can answer
- [00:54:57.000]most questions, because they are repeat questions but we do a lot of training with them for that reason.
- [00:55:04.000]And I will want to add a note because my daughter is going to be a freshman and she I just text her about season tickets. She said that she got a flyer in the mail.
- [00:55:14.000]That said, where you could go online and buy them if you're an enrolled students. So I don't know if there's an online portal for that or not, but she, that's how she got it and is hounding me about it.
- [00:55:26.000]So, there you go.
- [00:55:32.000]I will locate that link and spread the good word thank you for investigating Scott.
- [00:55:38.000]That's the best way to get the inside scoop.
- [00:55:42.000]All right, well fantastic thank you both for my end I'll give a quick plug here we have a few sessions coming up, will be speaking with housing in Residence Life next week, next Tuesday evening.
- [00:55:52.000]So, all questions about on campus housing, moving process dining meal plans, etc so we'll be hearing from them on Tuesday, and then Fraternity and Sorority Life will be presenting the next Tuesday if you're interested in either of those topics so I hope
- [00:56:09.000]you'll join us again in the future. Thank you again for joining us this evening Veronica, Joe Scott, thank you so much for your time and for sharing your evening with me, and I look forward to seeing you all soon we'll see you back here in August, if
- [00:56:22.000]not sooner. Take care everyone.
