(upbeat music)
[00:00:03.610]
One of the primary functions of storytelling
[00:00:06.230]
is coping and sense making, so when life
[00:00:09.200]
is really messy and chaotic,
[00:00:11.010]
we map narrative features onto that messiness
[00:00:15.700]
in order to help make it coherent and make sense.
[00:00:19.120]
So one of the things that we can do
[00:00:20.640]
when we're in the midst of difficulty,
[00:00:22.030]
like serious illness, is narrate our experience,
[00:00:25.470]
both to connect with other people,
[00:00:26.980]
to cope, to seek social support.
